Why your tight hip flexors may be a function of your nervous system...and other fascinating correlations with Elisabeth Kristof

Why your tight hip flexors may be a function of your nervous system...and other fascinating correlations with Elisabeth Kristof

I’ve shared before that when I began this podcast, I intended to have a faith-filled, grace-based focus on our eating and movement. That was it. Honestly that’s all I knew. But as the saying goes, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. As this show has progressed and I’ve had extended conversations with counselors, faith leaders, and more, I realized our mind and emotions are so intricately connected to the rest of our body and these impact our eating and movement.

My conversation with Elisabeth Kristof takes this to an elevated understanding that is simply fascinating. If you are a 1.5 speed listener you may want to take that down because Elisabeth brings so much knowledge about the nervous system, our stress response, and our body’s signals.

We discuss

  • There is only so much you can do in your workouts without looking at the operating system and the areas of the brain
  • Why tight hip flexors may not be just soreness or tightness, rather it’s a function of your brain not feeling safe
  • The plasticity of our nervous system by intentionally training our nervous system
  • The integration of cognitive therapy and understanding how our nervous system and body respond to it
  • The power of using new tools to move emotions through our body
  • “Old brain” and “new brain”
  • What dysregulation is
  • Ways our body may be protecting us from dysregulation that we may not expect
  • The vagus nerve and how it’s the pathway to the brain of what is going on inside our body
  • The :30 way to reconnect with the signals of your body
  • How and why belly breathing is so impactful in regulating yourself
