Amy and her friend Camisha discuss Black body image

Amy and her friend Camisha discuss Black body image

Sometimes God puts just the right person in your life at just the right time. I have several friends who fit into this category, including my friend Camisha Broussard. We have spent hours on the sidewalks of our neighborhood. The first time out we discussed politics, capitalism, health, body image...you know, we kept it light. Camisha is a mother to four great boys, a wife to a great Ironman, a professor for the greatest community college in Houston, and she’s working on being a great writer and amateur pizza maker. Camisha is also Black, and has played an integral part in my own awareness and education of the experience of Black America.

Because cross-cultural body image is something I’ve been exploring for a while, I asked Camisha how she’d feel about coming on the show and having a conversation with me. Not all of my community is white, but I know a lot of you are, and I thought you might find her experience as a Black woman in America as interesting as I did.

We discuss:

  • The general “ideal” body for Black women
  • The disconnect between health and body
  • How receiving and giving love through food can run counter to healthy living
  • The impact of formal education with regard to her food choices
  • The aha moment I had relating to Camisha’s experience of learning more
  • The other attributes that are important to Black women
  • “Big Mama” and what she represents
  • And some bonus wisdom about marriage that applies to everyone
