"How do I talk to my child about their weight?" with Michelle Nietert, LPC

I don’t know if you got the memo on this, but parenting is tricky. And hard. And particularly difficult as it relates to our children and their body size. If you’ve been with me for any amount of time you know I’m a big believer in taking care of our body so we can do what we are called to do, not so it will look a certain way. But there are times we witness our children’s body size changing and are not sure what to do about it.

Because I don’t feel I’m qualified to answer this, I brought in licensed professional counselor Michelle Nietert to discuss this.

We discuss:

  • The impact of flippant words and phrases
  • Helpful vs. (unintentionally) hurtful words
  • The importance of using medical professionals to help with weight
  • When it’s time to weave mental health intervention with body health
  • Why involving another party outside of the family can be helpful
  • Why we shouldn’t “do this together”
