DJ Muggs recalls saving up for an E-mu Systems SP-1200, making “wack beats for about a year,” and finally stumbling onto the magic that became Cypress Hill’s “Real Estate.” The legendary producer and DJ details the lo-fi demo process: running the drum machine into a big boombox, recording one-take vocals onto the same cassette, and mailing the tapes to RuffHouse Records co-founder Joe “The Butcher” Nicolo. That homemade demo ultimately helped set the stage for Cypress Hill’s 1991 debut.
