This week marks the anniversary of the death of Maurice Barbanell, who passed away on 17 July 1981. More than four decades later, his influence on modern Spiritualism continues to be felt, even if his name is not as widely recognised as those of the mediums and spirit guides he helped bring to public attention.
In this episode of Haunted History Chronicles, we explore the remarkable life and legacy of one of the twentieth century's most influential figures in the Spiritualist movement. As the founder and long-serving editor of Psychic News, Maurice Barbanell dedicated more than sixty years to promoting Spiritualism, investigating psychic phenomena and encouraging discussion about the survival of consciousness after death. Through his work, he helped shape public perceptions of mediumship and the possibility of life beyond the grave.
Joining me is Dr Nick Richbell, whose doctoral research has helped restore Maurice Barbanell to his rightful place in the history of Spiritualism. Having recently completed his PhD in History at the University of Waterloo, Dr Richbell specialises in the history of the Spiritualist movement. His doctoral dissertation explores the extraordinary relationship between Maurice Barbanell and his spirit guide, Silver Birch, whose teachings continue to be shared in Spiritualist churches around the world.
