#55 When Enough Is Enough
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask a simple question: how do you know when enough is enough? Catherine says most of the time we already know, whether it is time to leave a party, end a relationship, take a break from work or stop recording. She explains how we override that sense with alcohol, tiredness, too much sugar or too much coffee, and why it is worth protecting and rebuilding if you have lost touch with it. Roy shares how he and Catherine settled on recording in batches of seven, with a backlog so the show always goes out, even when someone is away or ill. He talks about cooking only what he and his son will eat so nobody has to leave food on the plate, and about why people drink past the point of enough, which he sees as escapism and a way of covering pain. They close by asking listeners what comes to mind when enough is enough.

Welcome to episode number 55 of Diff'rent Points. I'm John Michaels, Catherine Llewellyn, and I'm Roy Collin, and the question today is, when enough is enough? Catherine, when enough is enough?
[Speaker 1] (0:17 - 3:15)
Well, do you know what? I think most of the time we all know when enough is enough. It's that feeling of being at a party and knowing I've had enough, it's time to go.
Or you're in a relationship, I've had enough, enough's enough. Or I'm working, I've been working, okay, that's enough now, time to take a break. Or I'm reading a book, I get to a point, that's enough, I can take that in.
Or I'm recording episodes for a podcast, you know, because often, you know, on my other podcast, I do solo episodes, as well as guest episodes. And sometimes I'll sit down and I'll record several solo episodes. But then I have to watch it and go, right, is that enough?
Okay, that's enough. If I do another one, it's going to be a strain. So I think often we do know in ourselves when enough is enough.
But I also think that we can override it. And we can override it by kind of squashing our intuition, our self judgment. And we can do that with obviously alcohol or other substances.
We can also do that by getting overtired. Or we can do it by toxifying our system, you know, like with too much sugar. Sugar actually is, you know, you may disagree with me about this, but I've done a bit of a study of sugar does to us.
And one thing it does is it disconnects us from our intuitive sense of balance and of what fits and what doesn't fit, what's right and what's not right, because it disrupts our energy rhythm. So if we have had too much sugar, or if we're overtired, or even too much coffee, there are all kinds of things that we can do to our body that actually override that sense of when is enough enough. And then we just keep going too long.
And then it and then it doesn't work. And then we erode ourselves. So I think this sense of what is enough, and when is enough enough is a really valuable, important sense.
And I think we need to protect it for ourselves. You know, if we're not in touch with that, I think it's a really good idea to then pause and say, how do I get that back? You know, if you've gone through a whole day, and then I don't know when when enough is enough.
That means it may mean you're disconnected from what you actually know inside you. So how do you get that back? You know, I think you get that back by doing what you need to do, you get yourself back in balance, and we're listening to it.
So I think this is quite an important one, actually.
[Speaker 2] (3:18 - 5:17)
I mean, there's a few things on this, like even, you know, some people now might be, if they're watching this on YouTube or Rumble, they might say, hey, they're getting high mileage out of their clothes. And we do batches of seven. And we've tried a bit more.
And we kind of realised this is the sweet spot, we have our full energy at this thing. And it was like, no, seven is enough. And the reason that we do it is one each day, which is the five, but also then we've got a backlog so that, you know, if we're going on holidays, or if some of us, one of us is ill or something like that, we're always, the show will always go out.
So that was a case of when is enough enough. And I also think of, like food, that if I'm making food, I try to make it unlike my mother that would just pile the plate, you know, especially Christmas and everything. And you tend to just keep eating.
And then that's enough is so the way I do it is I make it that I'm going to eat everything. And my son's going to eat everything. And it's enough.
And I'm not going to have it that there's too much there that we have to kind of tell ourselves, you know, I've had enough and I leave the rest because I don't think that's good for you. It's like we kind of, I don't know, is it something out of courtesy or something that we were made when we were younger, eat your food and we kind of do it that way. So that's enough.
And regarding drink, I've always known when enough is enough. I've been around male and females and even dated people and they don't know when enough is enough. And it's a disgusting thing to see because you're like, why can't you stop?
If there's three bottles of wine, they have to have the three bottles. And you're like, it's not enough. So I think we have to have discipline ourself for knowing when enough is enough instead of somebody telling us.
And you have to ask yourself why, if we're looking at the drinking thing, why do I have to get drunk? What is wrong? Is it covering some pain, which I believe is what the reason is.
And that's why it's an escapism. So you should know when enough is enough.
[Speaker 1] (5:20 - 5:21)
Absolutely agree.
[Speaker 2] (5:22 - 5:41)
So I'm wondering what comes to mind with our beautiful listeners. When enough is enough, what do you think of? Write in the comments, we'd love to see it.
Maybe share with three friends, really helps. And the reviews as well, very, you know, five star little comments. We read them all.
We appreciate it. And until the next episode, take care.
