#50 What Does a Good Life Mean
In this episode, Roy and Catherine reach their 50th episode and ask what a good life means. Roy thanks listeners for coming back and says the show is doing well in the charts and downloads. For him, a good life is about being present, not about owning a beautiful house or a fancy car that never breaks down, a point he makes after his own car broke down at the weekend. It is the people you surround yourself with, being close to family and loved ones, and enjoying and nourishing yourself with good food, not junk and energy drinks. Catherine says there isn’t one good life for everybody. Some of her friends define it as skiing every year, homes in London, the country and abroad, several cars, private schools and staff, and for them that is a good life, until they realise it has become a burden to manage and no longer fits. She shares a recent epiphany: she had been working very hard towards something, realised she didn’t actually want it, let it go, and her whole life changed from a drudge to something beautiful, because her life was already good in the way she wanted it. Roy adds that he loves cooking and putting love into food for the people he feeds, while a friend who eats out or has food made for him is missing something that is part of Roy’s good life. Catherine agrees, saying she would often rather eat her own cooking at home than go out for a meal. She closes by asking what a good life is for you, whether you are living it, and if not, what adjustments, even negotiations with the people in your life, you could make.

Welcome to Different Points episode 50 with my wonderful co-host Roy and myself Catherine. Thank you for coming back onto the show to listen to us. So today's question is what does a good life mean or what is a good life?
I think this is a question many of us really don't necessarily know what the answer is to, but Roy what's your take on what is a good life?
[Speaker 2] (0:29 - 0:45)
First of all it's great that we got to the milestone of 50 so hurrah and thanks very much for the listeners for you know coming back so it's doing well in the charts and downloads so we appreciate that. I'm after losing my train of thought now you'll have to ask me the question.
[Speaker 1] (0:48 - 0:50)
Roy what is a good life?
[Speaker 2] (0:50 - 1:41)
A good life yeah well a good life is remembering things I suppose. I think it's, I mean it's kind of like we're talking in some of the different questions that we're doing. I think it's being present it's not like when I get this beautiful house when I'm driving this fancy car that doesn't break down you know things like that and the reason I'm saying that is because my car broke down at the weekend hence why I put that little comment in, but I think it's a good life is not for possessions.
A good life is the people you surround yourself with being close to family, loved ones and enjoying life. Enjoying the food that you eat not just eating junk and you know going to McDonald's and eating drinking Red Bull and things like that, that you're actually nourishing your body and when you do that you'll feel better and yeah to me that's a good life.
[Speaker 1] (1:41 - 4:05)
Beautiful well I think this question what is a good life is really interesting because I don't think there is a thing that is a good life necessarily for everybody. I think each person's good life is different for them so they might like yours Roy, mine is quite similar to yours right so you and I could get together and go right well that is what a good life is for everybody but we both know that's not necessarily the case. So I have friends and for them some of my friends a good life is going skiing at least once a year, having a home in London, a home in the country and a home somewhere abroad, having a couple of cars, children in private schools, lots and lots of clothes and staff doing things.
To them that's a good life, that's what a good life is for them and that's what they want to do and that's what they're doing. Now that is a good life for them unless they reach a point where they realise that actually that's not right for them anymore and actually they're trapped in something which was great for them before and isn't great anymore. Now it's just a burden because it's a lot to manage, a lot to organise, there's a lot of inconvenience to it so if it's not what you really want it suddenly becomes a burdensome life and not fun at all.
So I think it's really really great for us to actually ask ourselves what is a good life for me really really at this point and I recently had a little epiphany around this last week when I realised I was working really really hard towards accomplishing something and I suddenly realised the thing I was trying to accomplish I didn't want, I didn't really want it so I thought just stop trying to get it to happen. I just let it go and my whole life transformed from a drudge to just a beautiful thing because I just stopped pushing for something that I didn't really want because I thought wanting that would be good and help me to have a good life and I didn't want it and then suddenly I realised that my life is already really really good in the way that I want it to be.
[Speaker 2] (4:07 - 4:39)
And just a little follow-up to what you were saying you know some people they want the chefs in and cooking from and everything and I know I have a friend he can't cook at all he just eats out all the time or has somebody cooking for him and for me it's like I totally enjoy cooking. I love trying different spices and I love putting love into the food for the loved ones that I'm feeding and I think we're nourishing our soul and they never have that so even though it's a good life for him he's missing out on something that's a good life for me.
[Speaker 1] (4:40 - 5:29)
Precisely yeah and that explains why someone says to me hey let's go out for a meal and I go oh do we have to? They go I don't understand and I go no for you going out for a meal is really fun for me I'd much rather eat at home and eat my own cooking and not have to bother with all the hassle of going out for a meal not every time but sometimes so it's very interesting isn't it. So what is a good life for you and are you living your good life and if you're not could you make some adjustments and live your good life?
You might have to have some negotiations with people in your life around that to make that happen. Thank you for watching, thanks for listening maybe tell a couple of friends about the show and as Roy said we're now at episode 50 which is great thanks everybody so much for the support and see you next time and thank you Roy.
[Speaker 2] (5:30 - 5:30)
Thank you.
