#51 One Small Step Today
In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask what one small step you will take today. Catherine says she takes lots of small steps, but the one that matters right now is part of getting back into a good rhythm between work, relaxation, looking after her home, time with friends and her health. Today she is trying out a new version of that rhythm, and she started it by getting up at six, well before usual. Being ahead of the day makes it easier to fit in the small jobs, like the dishwasher and laundry, around her work and keep a flow going. Roy says that with so many businesses and so many balls in the air, he can feel overwhelmed by everything that looks important. His step today was to pick the big task first, the “eat the frog” approach, waking up at five to do it, and not adding more on top. He plans to focus on one or two money-making priorities at a time for the week, since hopping between three or four means none of them get finished and they just stay on the list. For him, the small step is the one that leads to the big steps.

Welcome to episode number 51 of Diff'rent Points. I'm joined with my co-host, Catherine, and I'm Roy. Since Catherine said just our first name last time, I think I will stick with that instead of doing the full name.
So the question today is one small step today. What one step will you take today, Catherine?
[Speaker 1] (0:25 - 2:14)
Well, I'm going to take lots of small steps today, you know. Recording with you today is my first. It's actually not my first step.
What one step will I take today? I am actually at the moment in a process of getting back into a really good rhythm with work, relaxation, taking care of my home, spending time with friends, looking after my health. I'm in the process of getting into a better rhythm with that.
And today, a step I'm taking is trying out a new rhythm between all of those things. So I could say that is a small step, because when you say what one step will you take today, that kind of suggests that that's got to be one step towards something important. So that is something that's important to me.
And I am taking one step today. And I kicked it off by getting up much earlier than usual at six o'clock, which meant I was ahead of the game. So that helps me very much.
Being ahead of the game in a day helps me with doing all the little bits and pieces during the day that actually really work, like unload the dishwasher, put the laundry on, hang up the laundry, put the laundry away, in amongst all the other bits of work I'm doing across the day. It's much easier to get into the proper rhythm and flow when I just got up early. So I could say the one small step today was getting up at six, or I could say the one small step is practicing this slightly tweaked rhythm I'm trying out as I get back into a better rhythm in my life.

Beautiful. I suppose for me, because I've got so many different businesses, so many balls in the air moving, and sometimes I'm kind of looking at the financial side of things that I, okay, this is important, this is important, but the other stuff needs to be done as well. And I've kind of realized by putting too many of them, that it just, it kind of can be overwhelming.
And I say, okay, I get them then just, I'm just putting down, like there was two today now, and I've done the big one, they say, eat the frog. The first thing I woke up at five, so that one is on, the other one's going to be easier. So that's going to do, and I'm not going to try to add other ones.
Like there's different things that are going to be making money today that I'm working on. I'm talking about big ones, and I'm going to do that for the week then. So I was just like, tomorrow I'm going to be, okay, this is the one, because sometimes when there's three or four, it's kind of, you're navigating, you're hopping between them, and you're not really finishing them, and that's why they stay on the list.
Whereas now the plan is, okay, that's there, and get everything done related to that. So that's the small step that actually leads to big steps.
