#48 Choosing Joy Intentionally
In this episode, Roy and Catherine talk about what brings them joy and whether we can choose it on purpose. Roy’s joy comes from being around loved ones and being present with them. This weekend that meant cooking with his son and taking him fishing again, watching him get his hook caught in a tree and reel in seaweed, plus walks and conversations with him and phone calls with his mum. He also finds joy when people spread the word about him, like a recent case where someone in a business group told a stranger to talk to him, and it turned into a client. Catherine says a lot of things bring her joy, and often it comes from an unexpected miracle. She describes waking up to a tree outside her window full of tiny birds singing and dancing on the branches, like a tree decorated with singing ornaments. She also shares what happens when she puts a chicken carcass out on the grass: small birds arrive first, then ants, then bigger birds, and finally a bird of prey whose wingspan fills the glass door as it swoops down and takes it without touching the ground. Her other great source of joy is client sessions where someone shares something unexpected that they have done or realised, including a group who told her that the work they did on energy in organisations helped them save 2,000 redundancies. She takes no credit, but loves that the way they worked together opened something up. Roy adds that he loves watching nature outside his windows too, the foxes, pheasants, ants, the occasional hedgehog and, for the first time, a mouse darting out for scraps. Catherine closes by asking whether you can choose joy intentionally today, and do it for someone else, since other people benefit when you do.

[Speaker 1] (0:02 - 0:19)
Welcome to Different Points episode 48 with my co-host Roy Colan and myself Catherine Llewellyn. So today's topic is Choosing Joy Intentionally. Such a lovely topic.
Roy, what brings you joy?
[Speaker 2] (0:21 - 1:33)
I suppose being around loved ones. I love being with my son. I mean, this weekend now, just even eating, we decide, OK, what are we going to cook?
And just sometimes, you know, he's sitting there watching me cooking and deciding what we'll do. He wanted to go fishing because he's going to go fishing with his friends. We had done a bit of fishing before, but it was a while.
And he was asking me, can you show me? Can we go again? And that brought me joy just watching him and getting his hook caught in the tree and, you know, reeling in seaweed.
And it's just, just being present. And that brings joy. Going for a walk with him, having the conversation, ringing my mum, just having a laugh and a joke.
All my friends, you know, you mentioned last time, the game that you play, you know, pretending that nobody, but when, you know, people just ring you out of the blue and just having a conversation or they're just sending you a message, you know, like recently, you know, somebody in a business group, they just mentioned you need to talk to me. And somebody reached out and said, I don't know why, but they said you should talk to him. And I did.
And it turns out that, like, I got a client from it. Just, you know, just joy from people spreading the word and everything that you're doing. So that's what comes to mind with me.
[Speaker 1] (1:34 - 5:01)
Beautiful. Thank you. So actually, a lot of things bring me joy.
Yesterday, when I woke up and looked out of the window, the view from my window at the moment, there's a tree, not sort of at the same level, top of the trees at the same level as the window. And it's directly in front of me. And in this tree, there were I don't know how many, many, many little tiny birds all in this tree.
And this tree has got quite thin branches. You know, I cut it down quite a bit in the winter, and it comes back up again. I think it's a dandelion tree.
And these little birds were singing and dancing with the tree. That's the only way I can describe it. They'd fly up, they'd fly back down, they'd bounce up and down on the leaf.
They'd fly around each other, fly back down, fly away, come back, lots of them. And it was like someone had decorated this tree with beautiful little singing ornaments. It was the most gorgeous thing.
And I had so much joy. And I think for me, often joy comes from an unexpected miracle, an unexpected beautiful thing. So another thing I like is if I've eaten a chicken, I throw the carcass out on the grass.
And then I can sit in the living room and look out through this glass door onto the grass. And all the little birds come first, and they pick bits off it. And I've also discovered ants come and pick tiny bits off it and trundle off with them.
And then gradually, you know, and then the bigger birds come down and take a piece. And then eventually, a massive bird of prey will appear, whose wingspan fills the door I'm looking through. And it swoops down and without touching the ground, grabs the thing and flies off with it.
And it's the most amazing thing to see. And it's literally only about 10 feet away from where I'm sitting. And it's oblivious because I'm inside the house.
And to me, that's joyful because of the power of it, the beauty of it. And it relates to another piece of joy I have, which is, if I come into a meeting with a client, we always have a little check in at the beginning, how are you and then they talk about how what's happened since we last met. And quite often, they'll come in, they'll share something that's happened, or that they've done or that they've realised that is completely unexpected to me and to them.
And that is way more interesting and wonderful than they expected. It's a fantastic moment, it's sort of a wow type moment. And that for me is utterly joyful.
I don't take any credit for it, because it's not me, it's them that's done it. But the fact that we've worked together in the way that we have, has opened something up so that that could then possibly happen. And one of my favourite with that was when my clients came back to a group session we were having, we were meeting every month, four of them, they came back and they said, Catherine, because of the work we did last time about energy in organisations, we've just saved 2000 redundancies.
And I went, Oh, my God, it was just so thrilling, because none of us had any idea that's what was going to happen. So for me, unexpected miracles bring me joy.
[Speaker 2] (5:03 - 5:44)
Beautiful. And when you were talking about the birds, because I love looking at nature outside and same thing, outside one of my windows, I see the birds, but I just, I see the foxes, I see the pheasants, I watch the ants as they're going around, even a hedgehog sometimes. And it's, you know, the other day, at first I miss it because there's always cats around the place, wild cats.
I saw a mouse the first time ever. And it just, because I put it under a certain bush for the cats, like chickens and different things like that, the bones and things. And I just had the mouse just running over, grabbing something and running back.
It's just beautiful to watch, just to pay attention to these things.
[Speaker 1] (5:44 - 6:19)
It is, absolutely. So are you choosing joy intentionally, everybody? And could you do that today?
Because of course, the thing is, when we do that, other people benefit from it as well. I mean, Roy and I just talked about this, and I feel uplifted by the conversation. So can you do that for somebody today?
Thank you for watching and listening. We look forward to seeing you next time. And if you feel like you'd like to actually maybe share this episode with a friend, if you think it would give that friend a bit of joy, then do.
And thank you to my co-host Roy.
[Speaker 2] (6:20 - 6:23)
Thank you very much. Until the next episode, take care.
