#36 Legacy Over Achievement

In this episode, Roy and Catherine ask the question: what legacy are you creating? Roy says his legacy isn’t about being remembered, a statue or a vote of thanks, it’s about leaving the world better than he found it for every generation’s children, not just his own, and knowing in himself that he spent his life trying to improve things. Catherine frames it through consciousness: she judges her life and work by whether, on balance, it’s helpful to the world, and believes the quality of her own consciousness shapes both her immediate contribution and her long-term legacy. She shares a story about a former client, once a corporate troubleshooter sent in to whip teams into shape, who’s now retired in a small village and joined the local council out of frustration with how it was run. Using the subtler, more energy-based approach he picked up from their work together years ago, he’s quietly transformed the council’s culture, including getting a dark skies initiative implemented, without anyone realizing what he’s actually doing. For Catherine, that ripple effect, everyone she’s helped going on to help others, is the real legacy, worth more to her than any fee she earned along the way. Roy jokes about franchising that kind of mentoring city by city, and Catherine mentions hearing that roughly 20 percent of humanity is now said to be operating at a more conscious, heart-led level, which tracks with what she’s seeing play out directly.

#36 Legacy over achievement
[Speaker 1]
Welcome to Different Points, episode 36, with my co-host Roy Colan and myself, Catherine Llewellyn. So today's topic is about legacy over achievement. And the question is, what legacy are you creating?

Roy, what legacy are you creating?

[Speaker 2]
Well, there's never a vote, you know, my name or the statue or something like that, like, oh, he's such a great person. It's more about the world that I'm leaving behind, to leave it better than I arrived. And that's for future generations, not just for my children, but for everyone else's children.

And I think that's the legacy. If you know that you have done everything in your life to just constantly try to change things for the better, I think that's the legacy that not to be remembered by, but you know yourself that you've done.

[Speaker 1]
Beautiful. Beautiful. I have a saying, you know, that thought of what is the way that I am living my life and doing my work?

Is it on balance going to be helpful to the world? It's always a question I have. And my particular take on that is to do with consciousness.

You know, my level of consciousness or the quality of my consciousness, I feel, makes a big difference to the contribution that I make in the moment, but also in terms of legacy, in terms of long term. And I've had a number of really lovely conversations with people I've worked with years and years ago, you know, and then I talked to them 10, 20, 30 years later, and they're doing things in their business or in their community, which is, it's them doing it. I can't take any credit for what they're doing.

But the fact that they worked with me, helped them to get more conscious of what their true direction was, and more conscious of what their best contribution is, and helps them to access the potential within them to be able to do that. And to me, that's part of my legacy. I was chatting to a man the other day, who I worked with years and years ago, when he was a senior exec in a business.

Now he's retired in this little village in the middle of nowhere. And everyone was a bit annoyed about the council and the way things were being managed. And he went, fine, I'll join the council.

He just joined the council. And now he's completely changed the culture in the entire council. They've got dark skies initiative implemented, which is a real triumph and very, very good for people.

And he's just changed the way they do everything in really subtle ways. You know, this was a man who when I first met him, was a troubleshooter, you'd send him in to kick everybody around and get them to, you know, be sensible. Now he worked really subtly, you know, using energy and all sorts of things.

No one knows that's what he's doing, because it's so subtle and so effective. But the culture around him just transforms. So when I hear him telling me that, I feel like that's so much more important to me than how much money I earned doing that work, that kind of legacy.

So that, you know, I feel like everyone we help helps someone else. This is a big thing I'm into at the moment. Everyone I help is helping many people.

And everyone who helps me, helps me to help other people. And that's legacy. Legacy is what's what's passed on and what's left behind.

[Speaker 2]
Beautiful. We should make a franchise model of that and get them to train a person in each city around the world. And I think that would make a major impact.

[Speaker 1]
Well, it certainly would. And I think to some extent that is happening, you know, there's more and more people seeded everywhere. Someone told me the other day, that someone I don't know who's done some sort of analysis of the sort of consciousness level of humanity.

And apparently 20% are now operating at a much higher level in terms of being ethical, heart led, etc, etc. And I thought, 20%, that's really high. But you know, that's that, that fits with exactly what you just said, boy, there's people seeded everywhere, who's tuned into the legacy of achievement, which is exciting.

[Speaker 2]
Excellent.

[Speaker 1]
So if you're watching this, are you someone who prioritizes legacy over achievement? And if so, great, good for you. And if you're still chasing achievement, good for you.

But also think about the legacy you're leaving behind. So please tell your friends about the show and come back and see us again for the next episode. Have a wonderful day and take care.

[Speaker 2]
And if you're a good hearted person, run for the council.
