#30 Simple Habits with Lasting Impact

In this episode, Roy and Catherine share the small, repeated habits that quietly compound into something meaningful over time. Roy talks about watching podcast analytics closely enough to trust his own instincts — including the time he nearly skipped releasing an episode about eating bugs because the guest looked like he'd just crawled out of bed, only to watch it flop to an 8% completion rate, confirming what he'd sensed all along. He shares his health habits — the gym, eating well, walking in nature, and deliberately shifting his eyes between close and distant objects, something he credits for still not needing glasses at 53. Catherine builds on the idea that a real habit removes the decision-making entirely — she used to agonize each time over whether to go to her conscious dance sessions until she made it a fixed, non-negotiable Monday and Wednesday ritual, and suddenly the friction disappeared. She closes with one of her favorite habits: pausing for just 10–15 seconds every morning and night to look out her window at the sky from her home in rural Wales — a small act that keeps her connected to the world and stops her mind from believing every day is the same. Their shared takeaway: the goal isn't stacking endless habits, but noticing which few are actually serving you.

#30 Simple habits with lasting impact
Welcome to Different Points, episode 30, with my co-host, Roy Coleman, and myself, Catherine Llewellyn. So today's topic is simple habits with lasting impact. Which habits are you using and that really serve you? Roy, over to you.

I suppose a few things come to mind with that one. One, in the business, I'd say the podcasting, they've been successful and they do well. And it's the habit of watching the analytics and making sure that I'm seeing what's resonating.

I can see which shows get a higher percentage. So some would be at 100% and others, like there was one that I felt, I'm not going to put this out because the guy looked like he crawled out of bed or he was about to go into bed and he was making bars out of bugs. And I just thought, it's an interesting topic.

People are either for it or totally against it. So I thought it'd be great. And it dropped to 8% and I've never had that.

But it was like, I knew in myself not to do that. With habits, I think, I have a habit of looking after my health, going to the gym. I have a habit of trying to eat as healthy as possible and going to the farmer.

If you eat at McDonald's, it's not as if you just become 20 kgs heavier overnight. But the habit, everything is compounded and it's also the opposite way. So do the things like the walk.

I like to walk in nature. I've made it a habit, which is something that I totally enjoy and look forward to. And then I'm seeing the science behind it and saying how good it is for us, even though I feel it myself.

And there's also the thing with your eyesight, because sometimes people, I mean, I'm 53, I'll be 54 in October. I don't wear glasses. And I used to always sunglasses.

But another thing is I'd be looking at stuff close and far away. And it's a habit I've got, which I think has served me. And I think for health would be probably when I look at habits is one of the better things for me.

Completely agree. And that just reminds me that when something becomes a habit, we don't have to decide to do it anymore. We don't have to think about it anymore.

And I've noticed that with, I used to go in the evenings, often I used to go to conscious dance sessions, which was really good for me. And I really, really enjoyed it. And I discovered that if I waited till that day to decide whether or not to go, then each time it was a big effort to get myself up and ready with my water bottle and, you know, the right clothes and layers to put on and take off and are my toenails okay, because we're dancing barefoot, you know, and all this stuff.

Each time it was a big issue. But if I just made it a habit that every Wednesday night and every Monday night, I always went to the dance. That was that.

Going to the dance was great, but not having the issue about going to the dance was great. So it meant that those days and the following mornings kind of fell in with that habit. And it was just so much more beneficial because I wasn't having to go through that whole decision making process every single time.

I mean, I've got a habit. I really love living here. I live in rural Wales.

And one of the reasons I moved here is because in my last place, I could hardly see the sky. I could only see a bit of the sky and I could never see the sunrise or the sunset from my window. So here I can see the sunrise and sunset from my window.

So I've got a habit where every night just before I go to bed, I'm in this sort of converted attic sort of in a cottage type thing with big Velux windows. I go up to the Velux window, I open it and look out and look at the sky and the landscape. Probably if only for about 10 or 15 seconds.

And every single evening, it looks completely different, you know, with the colors and the shape, you know, what the light is doing. And then every single morning when I get up, the minute I get up, I go and look out the window and look at it again. And doing those two things keep me connected to the wider world and the beauty of it and the fact that it keeps, which for me is very, very good because otherwise my mind can start to think that every day is the same, but it's not.

So just that I've got several other habits, but that is one of my favorites because it's just such an easy, quick thing to just go, hello world. Yes, thank you. I'll receive that beautiful gift of what you look like tonight or this morning.

I do the same thing actually. I look out the window like that. Excellent.

I wonder how many other people are doing that around the world, this sort of wave of people looking out of the window around the 24 hour clock. Rather a nice idea. So yeah, everybody, you know, what habits do you have already that really serve you? And every now and again we add another habit.

I think the thing to do is not to try and add too many habits because then you end up like a machine, but yeah, what habits are serving you? So have a great day and thank you for listening and watching again. And please do help us grow the show by telling your friends and giving reviews or anything else that feels good for you to do. And see you next time and take care.

Take care.
