#22 Relationships That Help Us Grow
In this episode, Roy and Catherine explore the relationships that shape who we become. Roy talks about staying close to his mother as a daily sounding board — valued more for her intuition and people-sense than for business advice — and about surrounding himself with people he trusts who are genuinely trying to make things better for others. He shares his approach to friendship as something built deliberately, not left to chance: picking up the phone instead of waiting to be needed, and choosing a real conversation over a quick Facebook birthday comment. Catherine builds on this with a broader idea — that any relationship can help us grow if we're willing to grow, even a difficult one, because it can teach us our own trigger points and shadow. But it's authenticity specifically — being around people who are genuinely themselves, without pretense — that she finds most nourishing, since it encourages her to become more real too. She closes with a reflection on podcast guests: how every real, open conversation on the show helps her grow, and that if you've ever been a guest on someone's show, you've likely helped them grow more than you realize.

#22 Relationships that help us grow
(0:02 - 2:50)
Welcome to episode 22 of Different Points, with my wonderful co-host Roy Colan and myself, Catherine Llewellyn. So today we are talking about relationships that help us grow. So Roy, what kind of relationships helped you grow or helped you grow over the years? Well, I suppose for a guy that's 53, that's the time of recording, I'm a mummy's boy, and for me, it's like my mummy is my sounding board and I ring her every day, but you know, there's times that I value her opinion and more on the intuition as opposed to anything connected with business or anything I'm doing.
She's very good with the people, so for her, like, that's my relationship for that. If I'm looking at the business side of things, I like to be surrounded with people that I trust, they're honest and they're at a great level and I see that they're trying to do things better for humanity. I like to connect with people like that.
And just the family thing, because if we look at relationships, obviously I thought, well, I'm a mum, but you know, my son, when we're all together at Christmas and my brother coming down from Holland with his family, it's just, I value it and the friendships that I've got, I make sure that I'm ringing people and people are ringing me, not just taking it for granted that you build on it, you know, because people tend to, they just make the phone call when they need something, reach out, just even if you have it once a month, if you have to put it in your calendar or something to just remind you, or have a list of things, or even like Facebook reminds you of when somebody, it's their birthday, you know, yeah, you can write happy birthday, but pick up the phone and wish him a happy birthday, or if you're not comfortable with that, even just a voice message saying what they mean to them, and you build the relationships. And that's my take on that one. Beautiful.
And I just, you know, I've had so many conversations lately with people who say, oh, nobody stays in touch anymore. And, and I find it, people say, I find it hard to keep in touch with people because I'm worried they're busy in their lives. They don't want to hear from me.
If they wanted to hear from me, they'd contact me, you know, obviously not true. So it's a really interesting one that you've read there. And I, and I think for me, the relationships that most, on one level, any relationship can help me grow.
If I'm willing to grow, if I'm interested in growing and learning, any relationship can help me grow, because let's say the relationship is full of deception and irritation and annoyance. I can learn from that because I can learn to understand my own trigger points and my own shadow, etc. And that's useful for growing.
(2:50 - 3:44)
Or if it's a really benevolent relationship where we're very supportive and honest and truthful with each other, that can help me grow because that's very nourishing for the soul. You know, I think for me, it's a question of, is the person being real? You know, is the person really being themselves? I think that's what really helps me grow most, because I think that encourages me to be more real. And for me, growth is about becoming more real.
It's about becoming more of who I already am, rather than changing into a different person. So I think it's about being authentic, being real, as to who they are, and what they're about. And so I've got a number, like you, Roy, I've got a number of people in my life who do not pretend to be anybody else other than they are.
(3:45 - 5:17)
They are complete, they're straightforward about what they're available for, what they're not available for, you know, what they're willing to do, what they're not willing to do. And it's real, and it's authentic. And that's, that's almost like the fertile soil, like in a garden, you know, that helps me, helps me to grow.
And one other thing I'll just mention is the people who pop into my life and out again, my podcast guests, they, every single one of them helps me grow, because they are all really real, they're authentic in those conversations. And every single conversation helps me grow, because of that authenticity and openness. So if you're listening to this, or watching this, and you're one of my guests, or you're anyone's guest on any show, you're probably helping that person grow.
You're helping me grow, if you've been on my show, including you, Roy, you've been on, and you've helped me grow, and you still help me grow by being the real you in every moment. And vice versa. You've been on my show, and we stay in contact, and we're helping each other grow the whole time.
Exactly. So thank you, everybody, for watching and listening. And yeah, really value, and maybe, as Roy said, reach out to those people who do help you grow, and thank them, because they may not realize it.
And also realize there may be many people that you help grow as well. So please do do all the lovely things. Tell your friends about the show.
Give us a thumbs up, five star rating, and we'll see you next time. Take care. Take care.
