#20 Reframing Setbacks

In this episode, Roy and Catherine tackle a question worth sitting with: what if failure actually teaches us something? Roy opens up about losing everything — his home, his belongings, all of it — during the mortgage crisis, and how that setback, rather than breaking him, led him into living mindfully in the present and studying sovereignty, which he now credits with making him more powerful and free than he was before. Catherine pushes back on the word "failure" itself, unpacking the deep conditioning that equates a failed project with being a failed person, and why the real skill isn't avoiding failure but learning to say "that didn't work" without spiraling into believing you're not good enough. They land on Einstein's definition of insanity — repeating the same action and expecting a different result — and the importance of having someone in your life who can tap you on the shoulder and remind you of everything you've done right, right when you need it most.

#20 Reframing setbacks
Welcome to episode 20 of Different Points with my co-host Roy Colan and myself Catherine Llewellyn. Today's topic is reframing setbacks and so the question really is what if failure actually teaches us something? Roy what would you like to say about that? I suppose when I hear of that I think of the journey that I've done and by losing everything and I mean everything my own every house that I had all my belongings, the personal belongings and I was kind of looking at it going how did this happen to me? You know poor me kind of you know I didn't do anything wrong to anyone it was just kind of like the system that turned off the tap for the mortgages but because of that I started living in the now being very mindful and then studying sovereignty which has made me way more powerful and realising my freedom instead of being under control so looking at that setback is the best thing that ever happened to me. Yeah when I think of the word failure I really don't like using the word failure in relationship to anything that's ever happened in my life you know probably because I've got that deep conditioning that says you know failure means there's something wrong with you as a person you know you've failed you're not good enough all that kind of thing so I think for me and probably for a lot of people we don't like to admit it when something has just gone completely screwed it's just completely failed it's completely not worked and I think that moment of realising that and admitting it is very very important and recognising this is not working this is not going to work you know put it down learn from it move on rather than just keep pressing the same button you know to try and get a better result well there was a definition of insanity which is to try to get a different result by keeping doing the same action you know and I think that's a really big lesson but first we've got to be prepared to say yeah that was a failure and also to be able to distinguish between that's a failure but that doesn't mean that I'm a failure I think that's the big thing from it because we tend to believe if that project's failed I'm a failure and then we can go into a flat spin for years until someone shows up taps us on the shoulder drags us outside takes us for a drink or something and goes look do you not remember all those good things you did before right now examine what went wrong and what can we learn from that so I think this is quite a big topic I'm realising as I talk about it.

No excellent yeah I love it I love it. So thank you very much everyone um I'm sure you've never had any failures in your life whatsoever but if you ever have a failure maybe you could learn from it. Thanks for watching, thanks for listening and do give us a thumbs up and check in with us for the next episode.

Take care.
