#18 Progress Over Pressure

In this episode of Different Points, Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn dig into what happens when pressure takes over — and why celebrating small steps forward beats anxious fixation on the end goal every time. From the nightmare of UK property chains to how Poland does it in a day, this is a practical and uplifting conversation about staying in flow.

What You'll Learn in This Episode

  • Why pressure kills momentum and sends you reaching for distractions instead of taking action
  • How Catherine learned to celebrate every single step in the conveyancing process — and why that mindset shift changed everything
  • Why telling yourself something might fall through could actually make it more likely to
  • How Poland's notary system cuts through the chaos that makes UK property buying so painful
  • Why progress, not pressure, is what keeps you moving forward with energy and clarity

Key Takeaways

  • Pressure creates procrastination — flow creates progress
  • Celebrate every milestone along the way, no matter how small — each one is a genuine result
  • Anxiety about outcomes attracts the very thing you're afraid of — focus on what's moving forward
  • Better systems exist everywhere in the world — the willingness to look and learn from them is the real advantage
  • You can't control the whole chain, but you can control how you show up at each step

#18 Progress over pressure
Welcome to Different Points episode 18. Our topic today is progress over pressure and today my wonderful co-host Roy Colan and I will be discussing this. So Roy, progress over pressure, what does that mean to you? I think that when you're doing something, you're doing it to get to the next destination of what you're doing instead of being forced to do it.

Because if there's pressure, it stops it. It doesn't keep it in flow. So whatever it is, whether it's business, whatever you're doing, whether you're going on a trip or something, like if anything is pressure to do it, I think you start procrastinating when there's pressure there.

You start thinking of, oh, I must take the dog for a walk. I must, you know, paint the walls or something. You do 50 things when there's pressure there.

And so I think progress to move steps forward is a lot better when there's no pressure involved. Absolutely. Yes.

And something that comes to my mind is the conveyancing process here in the UK, where if you decide to sell your house or you want to sell your house, you want to buy another property. And if you don't live in the UK, it's probably hard to believe that it's so insane the way we do it every year. It goes through all these stages.

And for much of the time, you're spending money on solicitors and running around doing things and the whole thing could fall through legally. And then even once the exchange is made, there are still all sorts of stages to go through and steps to go through. So if you've got a pressure, which is to get out of one property and into another property on the same day, which most people have, you want to do it on the same day, because otherwise, where are you going to sleep? Where are you going to put your stuff in between? And people can't afford to put everything into storage.

So you've got this pressure to get it all matched up. But there's this whole chain of people behind your buyer and whole chain of people in front of the person you're buying from. And everyone's in this horrible pressure lock.

And everyone gets really tense, irritable. People almost, it's not road rage, it's convincing rage. People get this awful thing that goes on.

So something I've done it many times, I've learned that what I must do is celebrate every step along the way. You know, I've had a viewing. That's a result.

I've had an offer. That's a result. They've come back round with their partner to make sure that's a result.

You know, you've got to celebrate each point along the way. A friend of mine at the moment is trying to sell a probate property, his mother's house. And they reached the point where they've got an offer.

And I said, Oh, brilliant. Well done. And he said, Yeah, but it's not sold yet.

I said, Look, you've got to celebrate every single step. Otherwise, you will be in attraction of anxiety for anything up to a year. So for me, that's a very good example.

And it applies to all sorts of other projects as well. I think that's a good point where you're saying celebrate because you're in a better, whereas if you're anxious, saying to yourself, Oh, it's going to fall through because such a percentage fall through, you're putting it out to the universe and it could fall through. And if we look, because I know exactly what you're talking about, because I've had a lot of properties in Ireland.

I know the whole rigmarole, it can take three months, you know, it can even take longer. Here, they use a notary. So if I'm buying a property off somebody or selling, you go in and you agree, put maybe 10% deposit.

And if I change my mind, I lose that. Or if they change their mind, they lose that. So that way it stops people, you know, messing about.

And you can do it in a day. You can do it very fast. I mean, you gather the information.

It's as much as thing, but the whole process can be done a lot better. So I wish people would replicate the systems in every country that works better instead of like we see that, but there's a million things like that. So yeah, it's just brilliant.

Brilliant. Yes. So if you're out there in a convincing chain, my heart goes to you and I hope it all works out well.

So thank you everyone for watching and listening and we look forward to seeing you next time and do check the show notes for all the links and do give us reviews and thumbs up and things like that. Thank you again. Take care.
