#17 Letting Go of Perfection

In this episode of Different Points, Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn get into something that holds more people back than they'd like to admit — the pursuit of perfection. When does attention to detail serve you, and when does it just get in the way? Raw, honest and fittingly imperfect, this one is worth your time.

What You'll Learn in This Episode

  • Why Catherine used to edit every pause and um out of her podcast — and why she stopped
  • How Roy launched this very podcast within days of the idea coming up — and what that says about momentum
  • How The Authority Alliance went from idea to reality at speed — and why that's the only way to do it
  • The painful cost of watching someone take 50 iterations to make a decision while you're already a mile down the road
  • Why keeping the awkward moments in this episode was a deliberate choice — and why it works

Key Takeaways

  • Good enough, done, is almost always better than perfect, someday
  • Over-editing your podcast makes it wooden — the organic moments are what people actually connect with
  • Speed of execution is a competitive advantage — launch, then pivot and improve
  • Perfection has its place, but when it becomes a habit it stops being a standard and starts being an excuse
  • Being raw and real on a podcast builds more trust than a polished production that sounds like nobody

#17 Letting go of perfection
Welcome to episode number 17 of Different Points. I'm joined with my co-host Catherine Llewellyn. I like this one, Letting Go of Perfection.

As always, I shall pass it over to yourself. Thank you very much. Well, I and one of my very good friends are both Virgos, and as you might know about Virgo, if you believe in that sort of thing, Virgo can be very, can have a tendency to be very perfection oriented, very detail oriented.

So, which can be very, very helpful. It can be also very annoying. But as my friend said, if you imagine a world without any Virgos in it, or anyone who ever pays attention to detail, imagine what that would be like, it would be worse.

So there's this whole kind of battle in a way between how much perfection is important and useful, and how much of it just gets in the way of life. So for me, letting go of perfection is a sort of a lifelong thing for me, because I love things to be just right. I love things to be tidy, you know, or in order.

I like the food on my plate. You know, I'll turn my plate round until it looks right before I start eating it. So I haven't got, I haven't got a mental illness.

I'm absolutely fine. I'm high functioning, right. But, you know, sometimes letting go of perfection is a really good idea, because sometimes good enough is the is actually what you need is the best way to do it.

And I found with podcasting, letting go of perfection is really important. When I started every single episode, I would go to edit every tiny bit of it, I'd take out all the pauses, you know, and ums and ahs, and all that kind of thing until it was almost wooden at the end of it. And so I've let go of that.

And now it's much more organic. And actually, I'm much more relaxed human being as a result. So letting go of perfection can be very good in terms of creating stuff that's real.

But it can also be very good in terms of helping us relax, and just trust ourselves and just trust life. And some of us need to work harder to let go of perfection than others. There are some people who could do with a little bit more perfection.

Some people are just everything's messy all the time. So it's a balance. So what do you think about that? Right? Well, I'll agree with it with the podcasting thing, because I was doing the exact same at the start.

And now it goes out as is and prior to recording, we were actually talking about my new show, the Spanish one, and I'm just kind of leaving it in as it is. And even when you suggested us that we do this show, my first kind of reaction was, I have a lot on the plate. And then I think, I know it was two or three messages later, I said, unless we kind of able to do a lot of shows together, and then I could do it.

And we had a graphic done, and we just done it. I mean, it was all within a few days, we were just going ahead and proceeding. And I kind of the same with the business, the Authority Alliance, it was kind of like, we found a niche, and it was with my business partner, you know, Bettany Stone, and it was just drive on fast, you know, it was just kind of, okay, I know we know the skill set and do it.

But I was also in a business before, I won't mention the person or the business, just because he doesn't deserve to be mentioned. But it was painful to see how long they took to make a decision. And they would like to 50 iterations of making sure this is this.

And for me, you just do it, you move, and then you pivot to make it better. And that's what I'm a mile ahead of the road, when your man is still playing a shoeless to get it perfect. Well said, I wish I'd known that when I was much, much younger, but I know it now.

Thank you so much, Roy. And thank you everyone for watching and listening. And I should let you finish off, Roy, shouldn't I? Because this is your turn.

You know what, actually, because this is important. Because if you haven't listened to the previous episode, we actually had a little thing because I went, I had done my bit, then Catherine done hers. And then she asked me, what's my point? And I kind of went into, I call it, you know, a rabbit, dazzled rabbit, because I was thinking, I thought I just answered that.

We could have took that out and done it again. But we want to be real. And we're not perfectionists, we just want to do it.

I think it's good as well, because we're showing people, you know, just raw and real. And so I hope you enjoy it. Give us a thumbs up, five star rating, and maybe share with some friends.

And until the next episode, take care.
