#15 Trusting Your Intuition
In this episode of Different Points, Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn explore one of the most powerful — and most ignored — tools we have as humans. From the gut feeling Roy had before a financial crash to the motorbike he knew wasn't right, to the spontaneous idea that started this very podcast — this episode is a reminder to stop letting your head talk you out of what you already know.
What You'll Learn in This Episode
- How this podcast was born from a single intuitive moment — and why Catherine almost didn't act on it
- The gut feeling Roy had to sell everything before the financial crash — and what it cost him to ignore it
- Why a motorbike that never felt right led Roy to make a decision that may have saved his life
- How Roy's mother has an almost perfect track record of reading people — and why he now listens to her
- The three brains — head, heart and gut — and why letting the head dominate drowns out the other two
Key Takeaways
- Intuition is often data that's been processed in the background before you're consciously aware of it
- Sometimes it seems to come from nowhere at all — and that's exactly when you need to trust it most
- The question is never whether you can prove it — it's whether you choose to trust it
- When your gut, your heart and the people closest to you are all saying the same thing, listen
- The moments you ignored your intuition are usually the ones you later wish you hadn't

#15 Trusting your intuition
Welcome to episode number 15 of Different Points and I'm joined by my co-host Catherine Llewellyn. Today we're talking about trusting your intuition. So Catherine, what comes to mind when I say that? Well my most recent example was one morning I was sitting there just recently thinking, oh no, a couple of people stood me up on meetings yesterday, someone else was flaky, oh no, I need to spend more time with people who are reliable and fun and I work well with, and suddenly this idea leapt into my head, hey why don't I ask Roy to do a podcast with me? And it was an intuitive sort of flair that came in and I contacted you and at first you thought you couldn't do it and then you thought maybe you could and then we did, hey let's do it, there was no logic path to doing it, there was no massive business empire building motivation to doing it, it was just an intuitive feeling, let's just do it.
And sometimes my intuitive feeling is actually based on lots and lots of data that's been processed in the background that I'm not aware of, you know sometimes that's what's actually happening, but sometimes it literally seems to come from almost nowhere, you know some people would call it a message from God or from the cosmic force or whatever you want to call it, but sometimes it just literally doesn't seem to come from anywhere else. And in those moments you can't really, you can't nail it down, you can't prove it, you can't disprove it, all you can do is decide whether or not to trust it. And I think that's, to me that's a wonderful thing that being faced with that in life, I think it's very, very good for us as humans.
I have a few things on this one, so one, the time, because those that are listening to all our episodes wish, you know my financial thing, I had a gut feeling to sell everything before the crash happened. I just felt I should just get rid of these things and I didn't. And I remember thinking why didn't I listen to my gut.
Another one was, I was into motorbikes when I was 17, 18 for about five years and you know never had an accident, but you know I know that you know motorbikes are dangerous. And then I got one when I was maybe 30, say 30 probably, and I got, it was an American import of Arago 700, so that's like a chopper style, you know like a Harley kind of thing. And there was something about it, it just never felt right.
You know I just, I just, and I never had that with a motorbike. And my daughter was about four or five at the time, and she started crying for a couple of days, she was like just not, we couldn't figure it out. And we just kept, and I eventually I sat down and I was, and she says I don't want you to die on the motorbike.
And it's strange that I was feeling there's something up with this, I don't, I rang a guy, I says I'm not driving this no more, take it away and sell it for me. So I just, I just said okay. And if I look at business, my mom is brilliant at kind of just intuition, just she's like not, don't trust that guy, not, I'm not getting it.
Every single person that she said, they basically took money out of my pocket. Like you know they didn't, you know they said they'd bring so much to the table, and they didn't. Whereas there's others, straight away she trusts them, and that's the one guy I was 15 years working with, and we never had a contract, and I never fell out, never had the disagreement.
And you know, so it's, and I'm more trying to touch in with that now, and I'm more okay when I feel that, make sure you don't ignore it. Because we have the three brains, there's the, you know, there's that brain that we're all aware of, there's the heart, and there's the gut, and there's a connection there. So when you feel it, when you hear it, don't get your head in the way, thinking you know better, you know, tap into it.
Absolutely right, and what a great world that would be if we all did that. Yes, exactly, exactly. So maybe comment on some intuition that you, the listeners have, you know, we like reading your comments, and as I said before, if you can give us a thumbs up, five star rating, and a review, it helps.
And until tomorrow, or as Catherine said the last time, because we're not sure what day is it going on, but we're doing Monday to Friday, the next episode. Take care.
