# 13 Purpose Versus Ambition
In this episode of Different Points, Roy Coughlan and Catherine Llewellyn tackle a question that sits at the heart of how we pursue success — what's driving you, purpose or ambition? And is one better than the other? Honest, personal and thought-provoking as always.
What You'll Learn in This Episode
- The real difference between purpose and ambition — and why it matters how you show up
- How Catherine discovered the distinction between the two inside a spiritually driven organisation — and what it cost her when ambition took over
- How Roy went from being number 20 to number one as a brand ambassador — and what fuelled that drive
- Why having ambition isn't a bad thing — it's what you do with it that counts
- How purpose and ambition can work together rather than against each other
Key Takeaways
- When you're in purpose mode you show up more ethically, more generously and more effectively
- When ambition takes over, it can quietly turn you competitive and self-serving without you noticing
- Tracking your results isn't ego — it's accountability to your own mission
- The goal isn't to kill your ambition — it's to keep it anchored to something bigger than personal gain
- When purpose and ambition are balanced, both you and the people around you win

#13 Purpose versus ambition
Welcome to episode number 13 of different points and I've joined my co-host Catherine Llewellyn and today is purpose versus ambition which is a good one and ladies first. Thank you I thought you might do that because this is one of those really tricky ones. I was for a long time I was in an organization that was sort of spiritually driven organization it was a business but it had all these ideals and what we thought of sort of spiritual principles so we were purpose driven you know we had this purpose to try to be helpful to society to evolve and grow etc but also any of us also sometimes had personal ambition and I think this was a distinction for me so you know I wanted to become a very good trainer because I wanted to help people but then suddenly I had an ambition which is I wanted to be the number one trainer and to beat the other woman who was also in the possibly being the number one trainer and it was an ambition right and so for me the difference was when I was in the ambition space I was more likely to be a bit of a bitch and competitive and put someone down and when I was in the purpose space I was more likely to be much more supportive and kind of moral and ethical about everything I was doing so to me purpose is more about it is more about ethical contributive sort of thing whereas ambition is more about personal gain.
Yeah no I kind of I'd agree I suppose yeah I mean everything even with the podcasts you know I suppose the purpose is to get the message out and to share and help people you know with the meditation the speaking whatever different ones there are I suppose the ambition is like I wanted to do well I wanted to get into the charts I wanted to you know get good downloads you know because I track everything and another one is I became a brand ambassador not so long ago for the Connected Leaders Academy and I have the link in the show notes that will actually show that but they had organized 20 people to come in and do this and I didn't really get it I didn't even apply and I was inquiring about something else and one of the people had left so when I was talking to the the founder he mentioned hey I've got this but you have to make a decision kind of by you know fast because there's a lot of people want to do it and I said look it's late I'll check it in the morning and I went okay this is good it you know it was a good return plus he'd give me introductions that gave me a good plan for my virtual assistants business so I thought all right look this might be good and I left him a message I said I might be number 20 you know because they've all started two weeks before me but I'm not going to be last I'm going to go to the top and I did I got I was number one in in in May in June and I'd say I want to do it again in July and that's ambition but there was kind of a purpose as well because you know as I'm connecting people and bringing them in you know I'm making sure that they're connecting with the right people they get the most out of it and then it's we're kind of I'm getting opportunities to do business as well so there's so many things can connect by having bought. I think that's well said it sounds like you've got it well balanced within you Roy which I think is probably the goal. Yeah definitely so that's another one that we we've covered so come back tomorrow and we'll have a different point and make sure to give us a thumbs up five star rating as you know you know that was number 13 we're still early days so every review and comment really helps until tomorrow take care
