1
00:00:00.200 --> 00:00:01.960
First on film and entertainment.

2
00:00:02.120 --> 00:00:04.919
Gad Day to all, and we have got some good

3
00:00:05.120 --> 00:00:08.640
movies to talk about, maybe some not so good movies

4
00:00:08.679 --> 00:00:11.119
as well, but generally speaking around a bit this time

5
00:00:11.160 --> 00:00:11.480
of the year.

6
00:00:11.519 --> 00:00:13.640
As I've said before, we're sort of.

7
00:00:13.640 --> 00:00:17.160
Into the Oscar season and there's some pretty good product around.

8
00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:19.879
One of the things that surprised me, which we'll talk

9
00:00:19.920 --> 00:00:22.559
about later, is the latest.

10
00:00:22.239 --> 00:00:23.440
Bridget Jones movie.

11
00:00:23.480 --> 00:00:27.039
But before we do that, there's a horror film to

12
00:00:27.079 --> 00:00:31.440
talk about, and there's also a movie which surprised me

13
00:00:31.800 --> 00:00:34.920
because I reckon this is the best performance of Pamela

14
00:00:35.079 --> 00:00:38.280
Anderson's career. I'm talking about The Last Show Girl. To

15
00:00:38.399 --> 00:00:40.920
join me to talk about this. Greg King, good, I,

16
00:00:41.039 --> 00:00:41.640
how are you doing so?

17
00:00:42.039 --> 00:00:42.399
I'm good?

18
00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:42.759
How are you?

19
00:00:42.799 --> 00:00:43.119
Alex?

20
00:00:43.719 --> 00:00:47.079
Very well kindly? And Sandy k Hello.

21
00:00:47.359 --> 00:00:50.840
Hello everybody, Hello, Greg, Hello Tina.

22
00:00:51.560 --> 00:00:53.439
And there is the one that we're talking about, the

23
00:00:53.479 --> 00:00:56.399
racalcitrant one, the Fossil, the guy who was there when

24
00:00:56.439 --> 00:00:57.399
Adam was but a boy.

25
00:00:57.479 --> 00:01:01.679
Hello, Peter Grause, Hello from the Pterodactyl.

26
00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:04.079
Hi everyone, good ey.

27
00:01:04.239 --> 00:01:06.920
Now let's talk about The Last Show Girl, which I

28
00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:08.120
got to say is the.

29
00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:09.079
Perfect running time.

30
00:01:09.439 --> 00:01:11.959
We're talking under an hour and a half by one

31
00:01:12.040 --> 00:01:15.760
minute wow M rated movie. It's sort of a really

32
00:01:15.840 --> 00:01:19.760
gritty piece about the travails of an aging Las Vegas

33
00:01:19.760 --> 00:01:21.680
showgirl and those around her.

34
00:01:22.599 --> 00:01:24.640
It's got this real feel to it as far as

35
00:01:24.680 --> 00:01:25.280
I'm concerned.

36
00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:28.799
And back in the day, we're talking decades ago, the

37
00:01:29.000 --> 00:01:32.120
character played by Pamela Anderson, whose name is Shelley, was

38
00:01:32.120 --> 00:01:35.719
one of the headline acts in a show called Lazzle Dazzle,

39
00:01:36.159 --> 00:01:41.400
and that was fashioned on erotic parashows like Billido. She's

40
00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:44.280
now fifty seven, so she's the eldest in the company.

41
00:01:44.920 --> 00:01:48.640
The company itself is way past its prime, but the

42
00:01:48.640 --> 00:01:50.879
show girls, well, the show must go on, as they say,

43
00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:53.719
and they continue to put on happy faces and dress

44
00:01:53.760 --> 00:01:58.040
in sexy lingerie, complete with rhyan stones and feathers and

45
00:01:58.159 --> 00:02:01.000
of course the towering head dress for which they're known.

46
00:02:01.760 --> 00:02:05.040
Truth be told, though, as I mentioned, the numbers have

47
00:02:05.319 --> 00:02:09.520
dwindled those attending, and they've been overtaken by a new

48
00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:14.400
breed of entertainment. But Shelley takes pride in what she does,

49
00:02:14.439 --> 00:02:16.719
and for her, this is more than a job, it's

50
00:02:16.759 --> 00:02:20.840
a calling. That's not so much the case for her contemporaries,

51
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:26.080
including rather prematic mary Anne played by Brenda Song, and

52
00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:30.560
an enthusiastic nineteen year old called Jody played by Keenan

53
00:02:30.639 --> 00:02:35.000
Shipcut Shelley Well, she lives by herself, would dearly love

54
00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:38.400
a man in her life, and she's sailed troubled waters

55
00:02:38.599 --> 00:02:42.840
unfortunately in that regard. When she hits the latest speed

56
00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:46.080
bump because of bloke she met on the site stood

57
00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:49.479
her up, she invites her friends around, and that includes

58
00:02:49.520 --> 00:02:54.159
an outspoken former dancer who's now a cocktail waitress called Annette,

59
00:02:54.400 --> 00:02:57.919
a role filled by Jamie Lee Curtis, somebody who wears

60
00:02:57.960 --> 00:03:00.919
far too much makeup in this particular production, and deliberately,

61
00:03:00.960 --> 00:03:04.759
I might say she left Larrazzle Dazzle six years ago

62
00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:09.120
but remains very close to Shelley and to the troop. Now,

63
00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:12.000
in turn, the nineteen year old Jody has extended the

64
00:03:12.039 --> 00:03:15.240
invitation to this soiree to the show manager, whose name

65
00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:18.319
is Eddie played by Dave Batista. And I'm kind of

66
00:03:18.360 --> 00:03:21.560
impressed because the more I see of Dave Batista, I

67
00:03:21.639 --> 00:03:23.960
see that he's capable of doing more than sort of

68
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:26.479
thug this roles, and this is one example of that.

69
00:03:27.039 --> 00:03:28.840
In this case, he's a man of very few words.

70
00:03:28.879 --> 00:03:31.879
Who cares about Shelley. In fact, the pair of them

71
00:03:31.919 --> 00:03:36.759
has history, but there's also an awkwardness between them. Eddie

72
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:40.319
drops a bombshell. The new casino owners where the show's

73
00:03:40.360 --> 00:03:45.319
been playing are calling time on larazzal Dazzle, and you

74
00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:49.039
can imagine it does leave Shelley disconsolate. She has no

75
00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:52.159
idea what to do next. She does not embrace what

76
00:03:52.199 --> 00:03:55.520
she regards as the bump and grind of the New

77
00:03:55.680 --> 00:03:59.360
age reviews that I referenced at the beginning. Same time,

78
00:03:59.719 --> 00:04:03.039
she tries to reconnect with her now adult twenty two

79
00:04:03.159 --> 00:04:06.000
year old daughter Hannah played by Billy Lord.

80
00:04:06.039 --> 00:04:08.280
Don't be the man who's going to be with us?

81
00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:12.400
What was that some music sting in the background, which

82
00:04:12.439 --> 00:04:15.120
we will ignore anyway. There now adult twenty two year

83
00:04:15.159 --> 00:04:18.160
old daughter Hannah played by Billy Lord, who has a

84
00:04:18.279 --> 00:04:22.399
rather checkered upbringing. They have a strained relationship mother and daughter.

85
00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:27.040
Hannah struggles to forgive her mum for the choices that

86
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:30.360
she's made, so life's not easy for many of the

87
00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:33.040
players in this one. They strive to keep their heads

88
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:35.800
above water and there are no big pardons. In the

89
00:04:35.879 --> 00:04:38.839
last show Girl, I reckon that's what makes it noteworthy,

90
00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:41.920
and you know it is a memorable movie. The writer

91
00:04:42.120 --> 00:04:46.560
is Kate Gerston, makes her feature writing deboo. All the

92
00:04:46.600 --> 00:04:49.079
more applaud its to her for that. She's pulled no

93
00:04:49.160 --> 00:04:51.600
punches and the film is all the better for it.

94
00:04:52.040 --> 00:04:56.360
Among the tensil and confected glamour, everything is a bit

95
00:04:56.399 --> 00:05:00.360
of a scrap. The director is Gea Coppola. That's Francis

96
00:05:00.439 --> 00:05:05.279
Ford Coppler's granddaughter, the co writer and director of Parlo Alto,

97
00:05:05.879 --> 00:05:08.800
and she does a fine job letting the material breathe

98
00:05:08.839 --> 00:05:13.680
and painting a rather hardened picture. The cinematographer Autumn durand

99
00:05:13.959 --> 00:05:19.000
Arkpoor who did Black Panther Wakando Forever, taps into the

100
00:05:19.480 --> 00:05:23.800
unrelenting grind that is the strip, and I really admired

101
00:05:24.120 --> 00:05:27.720
Natalie Zerring's production design, which adds to the last show

102
00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:30.399
Girl's authenticity. A lot to be said for the music

103
00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:37.319
choices original numbers from Andrew White, he was responsible.

104
00:05:35.879 --> 00:05:37.879
For music in Barbie.

105
00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:42.040
But the star of this show unquestionably Pamela Anderson, who's

106
00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:46.639
not only maintained an enviable figure but excels in the lead.

107
00:05:46.759 --> 00:05:48.199
She's really potent as.

108
00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:51.680
The spirited and vulnerable Shelley, who has had her fair

109
00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:53.839
share of Knox in her life, and the pain is

110
00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:54.600
quite evident.

111
00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:58.240
Cast Round is really good too. There's muscularity of voice

112
00:05:58.279 --> 00:05:58.680
and demeanor.

113
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:02.240
I mentioned Dave Batista, he revels in his less is

114
00:06:02.319 --> 00:06:05.720
more gentle giant approach to this one. And then Jamie

115
00:06:05.759 --> 00:06:10.079
Lee Curtis My Golly presents as larger than life, gregarious,

116
00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:13.759
loud and ken and Shipka brings a naivitate to Jody

117
00:06:13.879 --> 00:06:16.920
and Brenda's song lives in the moment wise to the

118
00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:20.480
vagaries of an uncertain industry, so certainly worthy of attention.

119
00:06:20.560 --> 00:06:23.439
The last show Girl, the tarnish is on full display,

120
00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:24.720
and I brought into it.

121
00:06:24.720 --> 00:06:25.560
What about you, Sandy.

122
00:06:26.199 --> 00:06:30.439
I absolutely love this film for a host of different reasons.

123
00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:34.600
I've never been a Pamela Anderson fan, particularly given that

124
00:06:34.680 --> 00:06:38.279
I'm not male, so I never really.

125
00:06:38.199 --> 00:06:39.759
Oggled over her at all.

126
00:06:39.959 --> 00:06:44.399
But as you said, Alex, she looks fabulous, she sounds wonderful,

127
00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:47.839
and the personality that comes out of her in this role.

128
00:06:48.399 --> 00:06:51.560
She plays just such a sweet character. You can't help

129
00:06:51.600 --> 00:06:54.519
thinking that that's kind of who she is as a person. Also,

130
00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:59.920
we haven't seen her on anything really since those Baywatch days.

131
00:07:00.040 --> 00:07:02.920
For quite a while, she's been on series like Home

132
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:07.560
Improvement and VIP, and unbeknown to me, she came to

133
00:07:08.199 --> 00:07:11.120
fame and fortune when she first was Playmate of the

134
00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:13.519
Month for Playboy magazine in nineteen ninety.

135
00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:18.439
Oh yes, I do remember that. I've got this for researpurpose.

136
00:07:18.439 --> 00:07:19.399
This isn't, of course, Sandy.

137
00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:23.240
Her body looks the same as it did in those days.

138
00:07:23.240 --> 00:07:25.959
It's incredible. She's fifty seven years old now and she

139
00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:30.480
looks amazing. But her face, she's let it go. She

140
00:07:30.519 --> 00:07:36.000
doesn't seem to be plumping it up with botox and fillers,

141
00:07:36.040 --> 00:07:39.319
and she doesn't seem to have tattooed eyebrows because they're

142
00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:42.560
very thin. And she's done all these appearances to promote

143
00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:45.399
the film without any makeup on whatsoever.

144
00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:48.879
So cutos to her for that. I thought her acting

145
00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:49.560
was wonderful.

146
00:07:49.600 --> 00:07:52.600
I thought the part she played was fabulous, And as

147
00:07:52.639 --> 00:07:56.199
an aging woman myself, you can really relate to not

148
00:07:56.360 --> 00:07:59.639
only one career coming to an end, and she's had,

149
00:07:59.680 --> 00:08:02.720
as you said, this long standing career for thirty years

150
00:08:02.720 --> 00:08:05.279
as this show girl, and it's like, what do you

151
00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:08.600
do now? How do you reinvent yourself, what is she

152
00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:10.480
going to do? She needs the money to live.

153
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:14.360
She struggled with her.

154
00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:17.000
Now twenty something year old daughter in bringing her up

155
00:08:17.879 --> 00:08:21.720
and having to pay attention to eking out an income

156
00:08:21.800 --> 00:08:25.000
at the same time as playing mum, and she's suffering

157
00:08:25.720 --> 00:08:28.480
in her adult relationship with her daughter as a result

158
00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:32.120
of not being able to pay full attention to the daughter.

159
00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:33.840
I canin'd of get that too.

160
00:08:34.519 --> 00:08:37.960
For any woman who is either responsible for bringing home

161
00:08:38.039 --> 00:08:41.559
the bread or is interested in having a career, something

162
00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:43.879
has to give if you've got kids, and that's it.

163
00:08:44.279 --> 00:08:44.879
I love the.

164
00:08:44.840 --> 00:08:49.559
Camaraderie between the follies that the girls in the in

165
00:08:49.600 --> 00:08:53.360
the troop themselves, and Jamie Lee Curtis was wonderful as

166
00:08:53.440 --> 00:08:56.720
really somebody, as a cocktail waitress who was really too

167
00:08:56.759 --> 00:08:59.559
old to be in that role already. It's kind of

168
00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:01.679
the whole.

169
00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:04.159
Thing was really sad and really.

170
00:09:03.879 --> 00:09:08.240
Moving, but somehow uplifting at the same time, if that

171
00:09:08.279 --> 00:09:10.879
makes sense. I thought it was really deeper and it

172
00:09:10.919 --> 00:09:13.840
hasn't left me since I've seen it. I keep reflecting

173
00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:18.240
on all the various nuances that go on in this movie.

174
00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:21.360
Totally agree with you, and it's interesting if you think

175
00:09:21.360 --> 00:09:25.200
about some of the names in the ages of the

176
00:09:25.279 --> 00:09:28.960
names that you've mentioned. It's been fortunate that with British

177
00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:32.600
cinema you've got people who are well and truly over

178
00:09:32.639 --> 00:09:36.799
sixty and over seventy, who continue to appear not so

179
00:09:37.080 --> 00:09:42.000
much that I'm cognizant of in US cinema. And you've

180
00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:44.919
had the resurrection of Demi Moore, I mean, well and truly.

181
00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:49.360
You know, she's in fine form obviously in the Substance,

182
00:09:49.399 --> 00:09:53.080
and Oscar nominated and so on. You've also got Jamie

183
00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:55.879
Lee Curtis, who keeps on keeping on, whether it's horror

184
00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:59.559
or doing something like this, and now you've got Pamela Anderson.

185
00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:02.320
So it's a year of revival. I'm very, very pleased

186
00:10:02.320 --> 00:10:03.360
to know that.

187
00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:06.879
And I'm also because one of my greatest criticisms is

188
00:10:06.919 --> 00:10:10.679
you get a lot of movies where they put women

189
00:10:10.720 --> 00:10:14.360
in particular over the age of sixty five and their

190
00:10:14.440 --> 00:10:18.799
vacuous roles. They go off and they explore and find

191
00:10:18.840 --> 00:10:22.600
new love in Europe or or places like that, and

192
00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:24.240
so many of them are disappointing.

193
00:10:24.279 --> 00:10:28.679
Sandy, So you know, I agree, yeah, and so you know.

194
00:10:28.759 --> 00:10:32.200
That I certainly hope that if there's decent scripts and

195
00:10:32.279 --> 00:10:34.559
it gets back to the writing. If there's decent scripts

196
00:10:34.600 --> 00:10:37.399
for women over the age of sixty or sixty five,

197
00:10:37.440 --> 00:10:39.480
whatever it might be, well.

198
00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:42.360
You know, then you can bring out the best into people.

199
00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:46.200
But if they're vacuous roles and you're playing airheads, I mean,

200
00:10:46.279 --> 00:10:49.360
that doesn't push anybody. So, Peter, what did you think

201
00:10:49.480 --> 00:10:51.840
of this movie? Which at the last show go.

202
00:10:52.720 --> 00:10:56.159
Look, I liked it to some extent, but I have

203
00:10:56.279 --> 00:11:01.519
misgivings about the storyline and about some of the way

204
00:11:01.559 --> 00:11:05.559
it is shot. Gia Coppola has made an interesting decision

205
00:11:05.960 --> 00:11:11.679
to shoot the film in widescreen handheld camera and lots

206
00:11:11.720 --> 00:11:15.960
of close ups, and of course we see Pamela Anderson

207
00:11:16.039 --> 00:11:18.320
close up a lot of the time in the film,

208
00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:22.759
and I'm wondering sometimes as I was watching the film,

209
00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:25.720
as if the film was lacking a backstory for her

210
00:11:25.879 --> 00:11:28.200
a little bit and it was a little bit too

211
00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:32.600
superficial for my liking. And this is a case where

212
00:11:32.600 --> 00:11:35.639
I think the film wasn't long enough because it needed

213
00:11:35.679 --> 00:11:41.360
to develop her backstory, her the mother daughter relationship, and

214
00:11:41.440 --> 00:11:45.039
the Jamie Lee Curtis character, who I thought was such

215
00:11:45.080 --> 00:11:49.200
an interesting one. When she does this impromptu total eclipse

216
00:11:49.240 --> 00:11:52.080
of the heart dance during the film, I thought, Wow,

217
00:11:52.279 --> 00:11:57.679
this character deserves a bit more backstory and information, and

218
00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:01.559
it was nice to see Jason Schwartzman in a brief

219
00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:05.200
but telling role in the film. But there was just

220
00:12:05.240 --> 00:12:09.120
something about the film that was lacking for me in

221
00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:12.919
terms of the story development, in terms of the character development,

222
00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:18.919
even though Pamela Anderson is very good, although I didn't

223
00:12:19.240 --> 00:12:22.759
like so much some of the close ups that she

224
00:12:22.960 --> 00:12:23.840
was involved with.

225
00:12:24.399 --> 00:12:26.320
So I thought, it explained to me why you didn't

226
00:12:26.399 --> 00:12:27.960
like those close ups because they were raw.

227
00:12:28.720 --> 00:12:31.960
They were raw, but they were repetitive, and I felt

228
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:35.960
that they were not developing the character, particularly because we

229
00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.519
wanted more. I wanted more information, backstory and so on.

230
00:12:41.480 --> 00:12:43.759
I mean, this is all part of the story about

231
00:12:43.759 --> 00:12:48.919
how young women initially attracted to Broadway to Hollywood, the

232
00:12:48.960 --> 00:12:51.759
busby Berkeley type situation where they all want to be

233
00:12:51.840 --> 00:12:55.039
a star and they all want to make good in

234
00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:59.720
show business, and this could have been integrated more into

235
00:12:59.759 --> 00:13:03.320
this story as well. So look, I think there's much

236
00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:07.600
to admire about The Last Show Girl, but there's also

237
00:13:08.159 --> 00:13:11.399
some aspects of the film that I wish were better developed.

238
00:13:12.080 --> 00:13:15.080
I was going to say though, that you got the picture.

239
00:13:15.080 --> 00:13:16.679
I mean it was a slow bleed.

240
00:13:16.799 --> 00:13:20.279
You got the understanding as the movie unfolded as to

241
00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:23.039
what had gone on previously. Surely you didn't need that

242
00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:26.559
spelled out chapter and verse before the before you know,

243
00:13:26.600 --> 00:13:30.240
you saw that that was the purpose of the story.

244
00:13:30.039 --> 00:13:33.399
You didn't understand exactly what was going on with the daughter,

245
00:13:33.440 --> 00:13:34.399
and then when the.

246
00:13:34.440 --> 00:13:37.879
Daughter visits you get that backstory, and you also get

247
00:13:37.879 --> 00:13:39.840
the backstory with her former lover, et cetera.

248
00:13:40.399 --> 00:13:42.840
I would have thought that's a lot of movies do

249
00:13:42.919 --> 00:13:43.840
it that way, Peter.

250
00:13:44.320 --> 00:13:46.879
Well, I would have liked a bit more story and

251
00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:51.879
character development. It's a bit superficial. It's a bit dismissive. Yes,

252
00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.840
we're given information, but it's not developed particularly strongly, hence

253
00:13:56.879 --> 00:14:01.279
the short running time, which could have been banded with

254
00:14:01.360 --> 00:14:03.960
a big more storyline. So yep, I'll stick to my

255
00:14:04.519 --> 00:14:05.080
view of that.

256
00:14:05.840 --> 00:14:09.200
Eighty nine minutes. Was that enough for you, Greg King? Oh?

257
00:14:09.320 --> 00:14:10.320
Yes, more than enough.

258
00:14:10.399 --> 00:14:14.240
Actually, this is a good companion piece to the Substances

259
00:14:14.240 --> 00:14:17.159
whom you referred to earlier, because both films look at

260
00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:19.879
how women has rereaded in an industry that values youth

261
00:14:19.919 --> 00:14:23.480
and beauty over anything else, and which can lead to

262
00:14:23.840 --> 00:14:27.519
sort of problems. A better reference to the handheld camera work,

263
00:14:27.879 --> 00:14:31.480
which gave us sort of an insurance intimacy to the

264
00:14:31.559 --> 00:14:34.120
characters there. I thought this was only much more bitchy

265
00:14:34.159 --> 00:14:37.879
backstage stuff too. Of the show girls there, especially the

266
00:14:37.960 --> 00:14:41.159
younger showgirls. I thought there's a lot more bitchy there.

267
00:14:41.200 --> 00:14:43.480
I did like Jamie Lee Curtis and that scene that

268
00:14:44.120 --> 00:14:46.480
you've referenced it where her she's standing on the tabletop

269
00:14:46.639 --> 00:14:48.039
to that Bonnie Tyler hit there.

270
00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:49.840
I like that scene. I thought that was good.

271
00:14:49.919 --> 00:14:52.679
Jamie Lee Curtis been something a little bit more vulnerable

272
00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:54.080
to this performance there.

273
00:14:54.279 --> 00:14:55.200
Pamela Anderson here.

274
00:14:55.200 --> 00:14:56.799
We haven't seen a lot of her on the big screen,

275
00:14:57.000 --> 00:14:59.080
and this is a role that sort of gives her

276
00:15:00.039 --> 00:15:04.080
a perfect chance to showcase some of her acting talents

277
00:15:04.320 --> 00:15:07.480
move maybe on that image of Baywatch that we all remember.

278
00:15:08.360 --> 00:15:11.799
Yes, I absolutely, I totally agree with you. So, I mean,

279
00:15:12.080 --> 00:15:14.159
were you surprised at how good this was?

280
00:15:14.200 --> 00:15:20.559
Greg, Well, I weren't expecting much from to be honest.

281
00:15:19.919 --> 00:15:21.279
That's exactly what I'm saying.

282
00:15:21.320 --> 00:15:23.799
That you go in there thinking, oh, well, yeah, you know,

283
00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:28.799
easily dismissed. But I was suitably impressed. I was seeing

284
00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:32.399
he obviously Peter el and look at Las.

285
00:15:32.320 --> 00:15:36.240
Vegas sort of in all that's imperfect.

286
00:15:36.399 --> 00:15:39.600
Glory, hedonism and all of those sorts of things as well.

287
00:15:39.679 --> 00:15:42.519
So okay, So in terms of what you would fault

288
00:15:42.559 --> 00:15:44.120
about it, what would you highlight?

289
00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:45.159
Oh?

290
00:15:45.320 --> 00:15:46.960
Yes, I agree.

291
00:15:47.080 --> 00:15:49.519
You can get a lot of yeps about some of

292
00:15:49.519 --> 00:15:52.639
the characters there as well, some of those things there.

293
00:15:52.840 --> 00:15:55.159
And look, it was a little bit you know, you

294
00:15:55.320 --> 00:15:57.519
like go short films here, You're probably need a bit

295
00:15:57.559 --> 00:16:01.559
more insight into the back story.

296
00:16:01.639 --> 00:16:03.840
I insane it won't say it's bet made.

297
00:16:03.879 --> 00:16:08.200
Okay, Well, so I suppose that we'll go from tallest

298
00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:11.559
to shortest, and we'll start with you, then, Peter. Your

299
00:16:11.639 --> 00:16:15.120
score out of ten for a movie that some people

300
00:16:15.159 --> 00:16:17.879
I think are going to really appreciate, and perhaps some

301
00:16:17.919 --> 00:16:18.600
more than others.

302
00:16:18.799 --> 00:16:19.799
The last show.

303
00:16:19.639 --> 00:16:22.320
Girl rated M and we've talked about the running time,

304
00:16:22.440 --> 00:16:23.279
what would you give it?

305
00:16:23.639 --> 00:16:25.399
Sure, I'll give it six out of ten.

306
00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:28.519
Okay, what about you? Greg?

307
00:16:29.080 --> 00:16:29.840
Six out of ten?

308
00:16:30.919 --> 00:16:33.440
All right, so high marks are going to be Sandy

309
00:16:33.480 --> 00:16:35.840
and I Sandy, go for it. Ah, I'm giving it

310
00:16:35.840 --> 00:16:36.159
an eight.

311
00:16:36.279 --> 00:16:38.799
I really enjoyed it, and I agree with you guys,

312
00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:41.440
where you didn't expect much from it. And when you

313
00:16:41.480 --> 00:16:44.320
walk into a film and you don't have expectations and

314
00:16:44.399 --> 00:16:47.120
you are blown away, as I was with this, then

315
00:16:47.159 --> 00:16:51.320
it makes it all the more better an experience. I

316
00:16:51.399 --> 00:16:54.799
really loved the nuances of this film and I loved

317
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:57.080
how it was shot on a small budget. I think

318
00:16:57.159 --> 00:17:01.679
Geocoppola has done a fabulous job and Pamela Anderson really

319
00:17:01.879 --> 00:17:04.599
huge qutos to her for being brave enough to get

320
00:17:04.599 --> 00:17:06.079
out there and play this part.

321
00:17:06.160 --> 00:17:08.119
Yeah, definitely in aight, Alex and.

322
00:17:08.079 --> 00:17:09.480
I've got an eight to an eight and a half,

323
00:17:09.559 --> 00:17:12.359
So there you go. So we really are quite divided

324
00:17:12.400 --> 00:17:15.640
in terms of our scores, but nevertheless, I think I

325
00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:17.799
certainly would say or commend it to you as a

326
00:17:17.839 --> 00:17:20.440
film that's worth seeing. That's the last show Girl on

327
00:17:20.559 --> 00:17:23.400
JAIR eighty eight a FM first on Film and Entertainment.

328
00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:26.839
Sandy k Peter Kraus, Greg King, and yours truly, Alex.

329
00:17:26.880 --> 00:17:27.480
First with you.

to have you on board fifty four bucks. You just

00:17:32.160 --> 00:17:35.400
go to jdash air dot com dot au, put down

333
00:17:35.440 --> 00:17:37.920
your money and we'll be glad to have it because

334
00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:40.680
you know that supports the station twenty four to seven

335
00:17:40.759 --> 00:17:44.799
programming some pretty good music and some talk and entertainment

336
00:17:44.920 --> 00:17:48.759
of all different forms. Let's turn to another movie called

337
00:17:48.880 --> 00:17:51.599
The Monkey Now. This also is a short film ninety

338
00:17:51.640 --> 00:17:55.519
eight minutes, m A rated and dare I say it's

339
00:17:55.559 --> 00:17:59.000
a film with heaps of dastardly monkey about.

340
00:17:59.200 --> 00:18:02.400
It's over the top. Absolutely, you bet it it is.

341
00:18:02.440 --> 00:18:08.279
And it revels in beheadings, spearings, disembellment and explosions.

342
00:18:08.640 --> 00:18:12.319
So you've got humans splatter virtually everywhere. And no, I'm

343
00:18:12.319 --> 00:18:13.839
not trying to turn you off. I am not.

344
00:18:14.680 --> 00:18:18.240
This is a pitch black comedy based on a nineteen

345
00:18:18.359 --> 00:18:21.559
eighty short story from Stephen King, written and directed by

346
00:18:21.559 --> 00:18:25.000
Osgoode Perkins, who did the rather scary Long Legs not

347
00:18:25.160 --> 00:18:28.319
so many years ago. It follows a man named Hal

348
00:18:28.400 --> 00:18:33.039
Shelburn who's terrorized by a drum banging and they don't

349
00:18:33.079 --> 00:18:34.640
like to use the word toy, but I'm going to

350
00:18:34.720 --> 00:18:38.359
use it by a drum banging toy primate that keeps

351
00:18:38.440 --> 00:18:42.240
misfortune on whoever possesses it. And we follow Hal and

352
00:18:42.319 --> 00:18:46.079
his minutes older twin brother Bill, who treats Hal shamefully.

353
00:18:46.480 --> 00:18:50.119
Now we're talking two time frames here nineteen ninety nine

354
00:18:50.319 --> 00:18:54.920
and the present day. These boys Hel and Bill with

355
00:18:55.039 --> 00:18:55.799
the flower pot Man.

356
00:18:55.920 --> 00:18:56.640
No, not quite.

357
00:18:56.759 --> 00:18:59.480
They were raised by their mother Loess, played by Tatiana

358
00:18:59.640 --> 00:19:04.000
Mass and that was because one day their father, Shelbourn

359
00:19:05.240 --> 00:19:08.839
played by Adam Scott, who was a pilot, went out

360
00:19:08.839 --> 00:19:11.480
to buy a packet of cigarettes and never returned. And

361
00:19:12.079 --> 00:19:15.640
Hal first comes across this monkey among his dad's belongings

362
00:19:15.680 --> 00:19:19.799
in a storage closet as the dad's traveled. As Shelbourne

363
00:19:19.799 --> 00:19:23.319
traveled and flew about, he collected keepsakes for the boys.

364
00:19:24.039 --> 00:19:24.839
Be that as it may.

365
00:19:25.359 --> 00:19:30.400
This particular keepsake, the simeon, is a portent of doom.

366
00:19:30.640 --> 00:19:33.519
It's bug eyed, and once the key on the back

367
00:19:33.559 --> 00:19:37.200
of the animal is turned, all hell breaks lose. So

368
00:19:37.440 --> 00:19:41.599
when the monkey bangs on his drum, people die always

369
00:19:42.480 --> 00:19:45.680
so after their beloved, quirky and caring mum croaks it,

370
00:19:46.119 --> 00:19:49.000
the youngsters are brought up by their uncle and aunt,

371
00:19:49.839 --> 00:19:52.559
and you can guess what happens to them. It's not

372
00:19:53.160 --> 00:19:56.480
if they're knocked off, but how They've always tried to

373
00:19:56.480 --> 00:19:59.119
eliminate this chimp by chopping it up and throwing it

374
00:19:59.160 --> 00:20:02.160
down a dry wind well, but it always finds a

375
00:20:02.160 --> 00:20:05.680
way to return and wreak even more havoc. Now, a

376
00:20:05.759 --> 00:20:09.480
quarter of a century later, its mercilessness shows no signs

377
00:20:09.480 --> 00:20:12.799
of abating, even though the brothers have been estranged at

378
00:20:12.799 --> 00:20:17.000
that point for years. Now, how a single separated father

379
00:20:17.440 --> 00:20:20.599
is trying to save his own son the emotional turmoil

380
00:20:20.599 --> 00:20:25.039
that he faced by seeing him only very sparingly. But

381
00:20:25.119 --> 00:20:28.759
the truth will out as a brother Bill comes back

382
00:20:28.759 --> 00:20:31.480
into the picture. Now, one thing I should mention is

383
00:20:31.519 --> 00:20:33.480
the only time we see the boy's father is at

384
00:20:33.480 --> 00:20:34.559
the start of this movie.

385
00:20:35.079 --> 00:20:37.519
He's dressed in bloodied pilot's.

386
00:20:37.119 --> 00:20:41.880
Uniform and is trying to pourn this monkey with disastrous consequences,

387
00:20:42.079 --> 00:20:45.720
and that sets the scene for the movie that follows. Now,

388
00:20:45.839 --> 00:20:47.680
if you look at the book, and I'm not sure, Greg,

389
00:20:47.880 --> 00:20:50.680
I'll start with you on this one soon. But he's

390
00:20:50.720 --> 00:20:53.640
taken liberties with the Stephen King books. I'm not sure

391
00:20:53.680 --> 00:20:54.799
where you have read the book or not.

392
00:20:55.119 --> 00:20:58.480
That's a short story in a collection of short stories called.

393
00:20:58.400 --> 00:20:59.359
Jelus and Creue.

394
00:21:00.279 --> 00:21:03.720
Okay, it has been expanded beyond what was on the page,

395
00:21:03.759 --> 00:21:04.519
So it's not a book.

396
00:21:04.519 --> 00:21:05.839
It's just it's just.

397
00:21:05.799 --> 00:21:09.440
A shorts toy and anthology short stories written by seven King.

398
00:21:10.960 --> 00:21:14.960
Okay, fair enough, well, he's personalized it. I was good Perkins,

399
00:21:14.799 --> 00:21:17.920
That's what I was getting at. And the most significant

400
00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:21.839
chain changes the addition of a twin, and Perkins wanted

401
00:21:21.839 --> 00:21:25.559
that brotherly dynamic. Toxic though it is, because that's how

402
00:21:25.720 --> 00:21:30.319
he Perkins grew up. It is a wild, wild ride

403
00:21:30.400 --> 00:21:32.960
the monkey, and that's sort of a gross understatement. It's

404
00:21:33.000 --> 00:21:37.279
horror mixed with humor, distasteful and over the top. Though

405
00:21:37.440 --> 00:21:41.279
some will see it, others are going to wholeheartedly embrace it,

406
00:21:41.319 --> 00:21:43.240
and I think that was apparent when we saw it

407
00:21:43.599 --> 00:21:46.720
in the media preview. It's such an extreme movie that

408
00:21:47.079 --> 00:21:51.000
really capitalizes on excess, and a line in the film

409
00:21:51.039 --> 00:21:55.559
references the fact that everyone will die sometime. I really

410
00:21:55.559 --> 00:21:58.440
appreciated the representation of the opposite good and bad twins

411
00:21:58.480 --> 00:22:02.799
by Christian Convrey as children and by Theo James as adults.

412
00:22:03.160 --> 00:22:06.960
Tatty Anna mass Laney's laid back attitude as their mum

413
00:22:07.440 --> 00:22:11.160
also struck a chord with me. And really the director

414
00:22:11.359 --> 00:22:15.240
and writer OSGARB. Perkins has embraced the grizzly and the absurd,

415
00:22:15.559 --> 00:22:17.759
and as a result, this is the sort of film

416
00:22:17.759 --> 00:22:20.359
where you have to suspend belief simply run with it

417
00:22:20.400 --> 00:22:23.000
to appreciate it, don't dig too deeply into the plot.

418
00:22:23.599 --> 00:22:26.640
Among the most memorable scenes is one early on where

419
00:22:26.680 --> 00:22:30.519
a priest delivers a matter of fact eulogy. Can't say

420
00:22:30.519 --> 00:22:32.839
I've heard anything quite like that before. And then there's

421
00:22:32.880 --> 00:22:35.960
the imagery of the less than conventional ways to carget,

422
00:22:36.359 --> 00:22:38.559
some of which will remain with me for a long

423
00:22:38.599 --> 00:22:39.279
long time.

424
00:22:40.079 --> 00:22:42.720
One thing is certain. The monkey's a killer, al right,

425
00:22:42.799 --> 00:22:45.839
isn't it so? Greg? What did you think of this

426
00:22:46.279 --> 00:22:47.240
chip of a movie?

427
00:22:47.559 --> 00:22:49.319
Look, this is a bit of fun that.

428
00:22:49.799 --> 00:22:52.960
A lot of the gesture you know, the boy body

429
00:22:53.000 --> 00:22:56.160
explosions and gore there is actually played for sort of

430
00:22:56.240 --> 00:22:59.119
uncomfortable last year, So you find yourself laughing at some

431
00:22:59.720 --> 00:23:00.960
in appropriate moments here.

432
00:23:01.160 --> 00:23:03.640
And this is one of two glory horror.

433
00:23:03.400 --> 00:23:05.880
Films around town at the moment on his hungry eyes

434
00:23:06.200 --> 00:23:08.440
and which plays it much more seriously with the way

435
00:23:08.839 --> 00:23:11.319
what he's torn apart and killed there. But this one

436
00:23:11.400 --> 00:23:13.200
is a lot of fun there, and you don't quite

437
00:23:13.240 --> 00:23:16.480
know what's going to be happening as the film keeps

438
00:23:16.519 --> 00:23:19.759
going there, and the relationship between the two Estrange brothers

439
00:23:20.039 --> 00:23:23.519
sort of comes to a crunch in the climax there.

440
00:23:23.799 --> 00:23:26.720
But I found myself enjoying this morning. I thought I would.

441
00:23:26.880 --> 00:23:29.400
But as I said, as taking liberties or as you said,

442
00:23:29.559 --> 00:23:32.759
as taking liberties with a short story that wasn't sort

443
00:23:32.799 --> 00:23:35.200
of particularly memorable, and it made something a bit more

444
00:23:35.279 --> 00:23:36.039
memorable out of it.

445
00:23:36.519 --> 00:23:37.319
Yeah, which is great.

446
00:23:37.319 --> 00:23:41.440
I mean that shows a creative talent and that's a

447
00:23:41.480 --> 00:23:46.440
good thing to actually do. Now, Peter, I hesitate to

448
00:23:46.480 --> 00:23:48.759
even ask you about this one, but let go for it.

449
00:23:49.839 --> 00:23:54.759
Okay, my view, I preferred Osgod perkins previous film Long

450
00:23:54.880 --> 00:23:57.880
Legs with Nicholas Cage, because I thought that was a

451
00:23:57.880 --> 00:24:02.640
good mix of the horror genre and the drama. This

452
00:24:02.680 --> 00:24:10.359
one moves into the horror satire sort of field. And

453
00:24:10.400 --> 00:24:12.880
we've been seeing a number of films as Greg mentioned one,

454
00:24:13.200 --> 00:24:17.000
and of course Heart Eyes was another one where we

455
00:24:17.079 --> 00:24:24.960
mix over the top murders, killings, beheadings, slasher type situations

456
00:24:25.359 --> 00:24:29.160
with a sort of satiric bent attached to it. I

457
00:24:29.240 --> 00:24:31.680
must admit this one didn't convince me at all. I

458
00:24:31.720 --> 00:24:35.039
thought it was a very uneasy mix of those two

459
00:24:35.640 --> 00:24:41.720
sort of genres. And the toy. The monkey toy didn't

460
00:24:41.720 --> 00:24:44.720
make a great deal of sense to me. I thought

461
00:24:44.759 --> 00:24:49.160
it was there as an object which didn't really have

462
00:24:49.720 --> 00:24:52.880
any particular relevance to the plot. It was just a

463
00:24:52.960 --> 00:24:56.759
device to try and get more murders and slasher say

464
00:24:57.319 --> 00:25:00.960
into the film. I was disappointed this film. I was

465
00:25:01.000 --> 00:25:05.200
expecting it to be a lot stronger, perhaps a bit funnier,

466
00:25:05.599 --> 00:25:09.440
perhaps a bit cleverer, and yet it turns out to

467
00:25:09.480 --> 00:25:13.319
be none of the above, unfortunately. So no, I'm not

468
00:25:13.359 --> 00:25:14.640
a great rhaps of this film.

469
00:25:15.200 --> 00:25:18.160
Okay, I think Stephen Kingstoy we supposed to have had

470
00:25:18.279 --> 00:25:20.319
a bit of a model to without being careful what

471
00:25:20.359 --> 00:25:20.920
you wish for?

472
00:25:21.880 --> 00:25:22.759
Is that right? Okay?

473
00:25:23.039 --> 00:25:26.839
Well, I mean I suppose, yeah, you can see this

474
00:25:26.920 --> 00:25:29.559
in the movie as well. Now, Sandy, I wouldn't have

475
00:25:29.559 --> 00:25:31.559
thought this is your kind of film, but go for it.

476
00:25:31.920 --> 00:25:38.519
Oh my gosh, I think it. Absolutely detested it.

477
00:25:39.759 --> 00:25:43.440
I haven't strongly in the negative about a film for

478
00:25:43.519 --> 00:25:44.920
a long time as this one.

479
00:25:45.160 --> 00:25:48.359
Well, right, I'm not the target audience. I mean the

480
00:25:48.359 --> 00:25:53.680
feat people were laughing their heads off almost. That's the point.

481
00:25:54.079 --> 00:25:55.359
This is what I was going to say to all

482
00:25:55.400 --> 00:25:55.680
of us.

483
00:25:55.759 --> 00:25:59.359
Okay, So, Peter, do you do you accept that this

484
00:25:59.440 --> 00:26:03.359
is not you because it's aimed at a different audience

485
00:26:03.440 --> 00:26:03.680
or not.

486
00:26:04.440 --> 00:26:07.400
You have to acknowledge the audience it's aimed for. That

487
00:26:08.000 --> 00:26:10.759
as a film reviewer, you have to see it as

488
00:26:10.839 --> 00:26:11.559
you see fit.

489
00:26:12.720 --> 00:26:15.640
Well, that's what Sandy's saying as well, but she's acknowledging

490
00:26:16.160 --> 00:26:19.200
which I mean. I sat next to a couple of

491
00:26:19.279 --> 00:26:22.960
youngsters who were filled with glee throughout Sandy, as you've

492
00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:23.559
just described it.

493
00:26:24.519 --> 00:26:26.839
What I noticed that there was mainly young men, because

494
00:26:26.839 --> 00:26:29.000
I spent a lot of time looking around the audience

495
00:26:29.039 --> 00:26:33.160
to see who were laughing so heartily, and it was

496
00:26:33.319 --> 00:26:36.480
young men. This is a young man's movie, although my

497
00:26:36.640 --> 00:26:39.240
old man partner sitting next to me was laughing out

498
00:26:39.279 --> 00:26:43.200
like also, I couldn't believe it because he usually really

499
00:26:43.400 --> 00:26:46.640
likes a serious, deep movie, and this is anything but

500
00:26:46.839 --> 00:26:52.640
that stupid, antius gorgeous for the sake of gore, heads

501
00:26:52.680 --> 00:26:56.680
falling off, blood spurting out, people being electrocuted.

502
00:26:57.119 --> 00:26:59.720
I don't find any of that particularly funny at all.

503
00:27:00.799 --> 00:27:04.359
But again, I'm not the target audience young men old men,

504
00:27:04.799 --> 00:27:07.039
and I don't mean to be sexist here. Maybe some

505
00:27:07.119 --> 00:27:10.200
women were laughing too. I couldn't see any or hear

506
00:27:10.240 --> 00:27:14.240
any cackling. But no, I mean it's well done. I

507
00:27:14.279 --> 00:27:15.440
suppose for what it is.

508
00:27:15.519 --> 00:27:21.000
I can't disregard that. And I mean, when it's the

509
00:27:21.039 --> 00:27:25.039
Stephen King take off, that's kind of what you expect.

510
00:27:25.119 --> 00:27:27.720
You know that it's going to be a whole lot

511
00:27:27.759 --> 00:27:33.200
of creepy stuff and retro and all of that. So yeah, okay,

512
00:27:33.319 --> 00:27:36.039
I knew that's what we were going to have. The acting, Yeah,

513
00:27:36.039 --> 00:27:37.960
it was good. The only thing I got really out

514
00:27:38.000 --> 00:27:40.960
of it was that one of the twins, who when

515
00:27:41.000 --> 00:27:43.279
he's grown up, was actually very good looking.

516
00:27:43.839 --> 00:27:46.880
So I was enjoying looking and listening to his voice.

517
00:27:48.160 --> 00:27:51.000
They were played by the same as same actor. Oh

518
00:27:51.039 --> 00:27:54.319
were they? I didn't even know that really. Wow, Well,

519
00:27:54.359 --> 00:27:56.920
then he's pretty. He's pretty brilliant.

520
00:27:56.960 --> 00:27:59.000
Really, because he didn't look good as his twin brother

521
00:27:59.039 --> 00:28:03.119
at all, that seems okay. Well, I enjoyed looking at him.

522
00:28:03.200 --> 00:28:05.559
I certainly didn't enjoy looking at anything else. I'm not

523
00:28:05.599 --> 00:28:09.319
one for blood spilling ridiculously. I mean even you know,

524
00:28:09.359 --> 00:28:13.200
if you compare this to the shock horror of the

525
00:28:13.200 --> 00:28:18.039
Demi Moor movie and the substance, I mean, I don't

526
00:28:18.160 --> 00:28:20.440
like blood and gore at the best of times, and

527
00:28:20.480 --> 00:28:22.440
I had to cover my eyes a couple of times

528
00:28:22.559 --> 00:28:23.640
during that movie.

529
00:28:23.799 --> 00:28:26.640
But the blood made sense in that movie.

530
00:28:26.839 --> 00:28:30.000
Here it was just blood for blood's sake, gore just

531
00:28:30.880 --> 00:28:32.359
to be titillating and.

532
00:28:32.240 --> 00:28:34.400
For shock value. Was it hilarious?

533
00:28:34.880 --> 00:28:36.880
And I didn't think so, not one little bit. But

534
00:28:37.440 --> 00:28:40.559
everybody dies in That's Life. Yeah, that's true.

535
00:28:41.359 --> 00:28:44.119
I didn't need this movie to paint me that picture,

536
00:28:44.640 --> 00:28:45.119
I suppose.

537
00:28:45.160 --> 00:28:48.039
And it also goes to the heart of arguments that

538
00:28:48.079 --> 00:28:50.319
have been around now for quite a number of years

539
00:28:50.319 --> 00:28:55.200
about the propensity of movies in general to depict violence

540
00:28:55.240 --> 00:28:58.519
in such a way that anybody who's in any way

541
00:28:59.119 --> 00:29:02.960
left of center or gets motivated by something like this

542
00:29:03.079 --> 00:29:07.200
canternity into real life. I mean, that's a very it's

543
00:29:07.200 --> 00:29:09.519
a very difficult judgment because I like you. I mean,

544
00:29:09.519 --> 00:29:13.000
I don't like guns, I don't like violence, I don't

545
00:29:13.079 --> 00:29:15.759
like explosions, and don't I don't know whether you, Greg

546
00:29:15.839 --> 00:29:16.160
or Peter.

547
00:29:16.440 --> 00:29:18.160
I wouldn't imagine either of you do either.

548
00:29:18.440 --> 00:29:21.119
So I mean, is it in real life but on

549
00:29:21.119 --> 00:29:22.240
the screen or don't mind them?

550
00:29:22.559 --> 00:29:24.200
Well, that's it, That's what I was getting at. So

551
00:29:24.759 --> 00:29:27.839
you can differentiate. But if somebody goes along to a cinema,

552
00:29:28.240 --> 00:29:30.519
and you know, we've had incidents where people shoot up

553
00:29:30.759 --> 00:29:33.440
cinemas and people die, and you know, they get the

554
00:29:33.440 --> 00:29:37.519
wrong ideas. You know, do violent movies, TV shows plays?

555
00:29:37.680 --> 00:29:40.039
You know, do they motivate them? I suppose that's the

556
00:29:40.079 --> 00:29:44.240
discussion I'm triggering now, Greg, is that not a concern?

557
00:29:45.279 --> 00:29:47.799
But ne Cisco's all the way back to Clockwork, Orange

558
00:29:47.839 --> 00:29:50.880
and so many other films. I do they do films

559
00:29:50.880 --> 00:29:55.039
cause bad behavior? Or are they triggers for people who

560
00:29:55.039 --> 00:29:57.119
already have that in their system?

561
00:29:57.640 --> 00:29:57.839
Yeah?

562
00:29:58.039 --> 00:30:00.799
And look, I suppose that they're in my what Hollywood's

563
00:30:00.799 --> 00:30:04.240
done in recent times. Okay, so now there's this diversity

564
00:30:04.240 --> 00:30:07.920
whereby you've got to have a certain number of diverse

565
00:30:07.960 --> 00:30:11.839
actors in virtually every movie. If I'm not mistaken, Now,

566
00:30:12.960 --> 00:30:15.880
do they take measures with regards to violence and movies?

567
00:30:15.920 --> 00:30:18.359
But I'm not aware that they've done anything in that regard.

568
00:30:18.359 --> 00:30:20.880
They've just let the blood flow, so to speak.

569
00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:23.599
Should they Well.

570
00:30:23.519 --> 00:30:27.640
It's arguable, but I don't think that that film's cause

571
00:30:28.839 --> 00:30:30.960
the sorts of things that you might be alluding to.

572
00:30:31.680 --> 00:30:35.519
Well, I don't know, And I mean, ultimately, surely there

573
00:30:35.519 --> 00:30:37.359
would have been some research on this or if there

574
00:30:37.519 --> 00:30:39.279
hasn't been There should be some research on this.

575
00:30:40.119 --> 00:30:43.200
What's your view, sending, I.

576
00:30:43.160 --> 00:30:45.240
Don't really have an opinion on that. Does it bring

577
00:30:45.279 --> 00:30:47.839
out the worst of us the ones that enjoy it?

578
00:30:47.960 --> 00:30:48.160
Yeah?

579
00:30:48.240 --> 00:30:48.720
Probably?

580
00:30:48.839 --> 00:30:50.880
I think you probably have to have a tendency or

581
00:30:51.759 --> 00:30:53.559
yes for that sort of stuff.

582
00:30:53.640 --> 00:30:55.079
I tend to agree with you there.

583
00:30:55.599 --> 00:30:59.039
Yeah. There have been so many psychological studies about the

584
00:30:59.119 --> 00:31:05.440
impact of images on individuals, and the jury remains out

585
00:31:05.640 --> 00:31:09.880
because there is nothing definitive that says if you watch something,

586
00:31:10.319 --> 00:31:15.160
you'll replicate it. It's only for people perhaps who have

587
00:31:15.319 --> 00:31:18.759
something in their system, they have psychological disturbances and so on,

588
00:31:18.960 --> 00:31:21.039
and are looking for a trigger. And that could be

589
00:31:21.039 --> 00:31:22.839
a book, it could be a film, it could be

590
00:31:23.519 --> 00:31:25.480
a theatrical production, could be anything.

591
00:31:25.680 --> 00:31:27.680
A video down run the video.

592
00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:29.880
Yes, that's good for example.

593
00:31:31.079 --> 00:31:34.799
Okay, so let me extend this conversation briefly to deal

594
00:31:34.880 --> 00:31:37.880
with the daily news. I know a number of people

595
00:31:38.240 --> 00:31:41.000
of our age who are no longer watching the news

596
00:31:41.000 --> 00:31:42.480
because it's too terrifying for them.

597
00:31:43.400 --> 00:31:46.480
Now, again, that's that's real life.

598
00:31:47.079 --> 00:31:49.359
The world is a shitty place, right It can be

599
00:31:49.400 --> 00:31:52.680
a great place, but it's been pretty terrible for a

600
00:31:52.720 --> 00:31:56.160
long time, and it's getting there. It's not a word terribler,

601
00:31:56.440 --> 00:32:00.880
you know, and so you know, and yet as shitty

602
00:32:00.880 --> 00:32:05.039
as it is, not enough is being done to dampen

603
00:32:05.519 --> 00:32:06.400
the negativity.

604
00:32:06.880 --> 00:32:10.680
So are we feeding the beast? Peter? Is the question?

605
00:32:11.200 --> 00:32:15.839
Well, are you talking about social control and about cinsshow.

606
00:32:15.480 --> 00:32:19.960
I'm merely posing the question because clearly whatever we've been

607
00:32:19.960 --> 00:32:22.640
doing violence in our own our own city, and you

608
00:32:22.680 --> 00:32:25.559
know this is a podcast that comes out of Melbourne.

609
00:32:25.680 --> 00:32:29.720
I mean violence in our own city, home invasions, burglaries,

610
00:32:29.759 --> 00:32:34.680
god knows what else. Carjackings, youths running ride. It's far

611
00:32:34.759 --> 00:32:36.160
worse than when we were born.

612
00:32:36.200 --> 00:32:36.440
Peter.

613
00:32:37.480 --> 00:32:40.440
Now there's also there's also eight media or twenty seven

614
00:32:40.599 --> 00:32:43.319
twenty eight million people in Australian hour, so I get all.

615
00:32:43.799 --> 00:32:48.599
But notwithstanding that, I mean we're talking in a week

616
00:32:48.680 --> 00:32:53.039
where what you've had two senior cops stood down right

617
00:32:53.279 --> 00:32:57.559
in terms of and law and order is a major

618
00:32:57.680 --> 00:33:02.400
major issue. So you know, this is what films to

619
00:33:02.480 --> 00:33:04.640
The bad part about movies is they transport you to

620
00:33:04.640 --> 00:33:08.160
different places. And to me, it's not so much of

621
00:33:08.160 --> 00:33:12.839
a jump to go from seeing violence in all its forms,

622
00:33:12.839 --> 00:33:17.519
whether it's supposedly entertaining or not to real life and

623
00:33:17.839 --> 00:33:19.920
what we have about is that's the reason I'm asking

624
00:33:19.960 --> 00:33:20.640
the question, Peter.

625
00:33:21.119 --> 00:33:23.960
Yeah, I mean I don't agree with the analysis that

626
00:33:24.000 --> 00:33:27.440
you've made. And don't forget we've got media now, social

627
00:33:27.519 --> 00:33:32.400
media and so much more that amplifies so much about

628
00:33:32.519 --> 00:33:35.400
what we see and hear. And I mean you could

629
00:33:35.519 --> 00:33:39.079
argue that in the going back twenty thirty forty years,

630
00:33:39.240 --> 00:33:42.640
there was lots of violence around, but it wasn't reported

631
00:33:43.799 --> 00:33:48.480
because media wasn't as obvious at that time. So look,

632
00:33:49.640 --> 00:33:52.720
I don't think this is a valid argument. I think

633
00:33:52.839 --> 00:33:57.960
the psychological studies clearly show that there is no direct

634
00:33:58.480 --> 00:34:04.440
correspondence between queen relation viewing violent or correlation between viewing

635
00:34:04.519 --> 00:34:11.400
violent and committing violence, because most of us have functions

636
00:34:11.760 --> 00:34:13.000
that stop us from doing that.

637
00:34:14.000 --> 00:34:14.760
It's interesting.

638
00:34:14.800 --> 00:34:16.760
I'll go one stage further and then I'll move on.

639
00:34:17.280 --> 00:34:20.800
But there are suggestions now that if somebody sees a

640
00:34:20.880 --> 00:34:24.440
violent act, rather than stepping in and helping, they'll film it.

641
00:34:25.480 --> 00:34:29.880
Now, what does that say about our societies? Anti, I think.

642
00:34:29.760 --> 00:34:32.800
We're way too dependent on our phones and we view

643
00:34:32.840 --> 00:34:35.320
everything through the lens of our phones.

644
00:34:35.519 --> 00:34:36.599
It's interesting, though, you know.

645
00:34:36.599 --> 00:34:42.039
As a former television reporter, and you would agree with

646
00:34:42.079 --> 00:34:44.559
this to Alex that you could go into any situation

647
00:34:44.760 --> 00:34:48.079
with a camera and you felt completely safe, you felt covered.

648
00:34:48.239 --> 00:34:50.239
And I think that's the way people feel now with

649
00:34:50.320 --> 00:34:53.679
their phones. That's the instant reaction. Whether it's violence that

650
00:34:54.039 --> 00:34:57.679
you're witnessing, you automatically film it, whether it's a concert

651
00:34:57.679 --> 00:35:00.920
that you go to, you automatically start film on your phone.

652
00:35:01.199 --> 00:35:05.360
It's a level of protection somehow that distances us from

653
00:35:05.760 --> 00:35:09.119
what is actually happening that we've all become so accustomed

654
00:35:09.159 --> 00:35:11.280
to that it's a natural habit.

655
00:35:11.760 --> 00:35:13.440
I'm not sure it's a very good one.

656
00:35:13.920 --> 00:35:17.280
No, I look, unfortunately, I'm not sure whether you have

657
00:35:17.559 --> 00:35:21.000
or not say any but I covered death, I covered bushfires,

658
00:35:21.320 --> 00:35:24.400
I covered i'd seen dead people. It wasn't it wasn't

659
00:35:24.400 --> 00:35:27.440
a nice experience. It stayed with me and as it should.

660
00:35:27.800 --> 00:35:32.119
And so I think you're right Peter, that you know,

661
00:35:32.480 --> 00:35:36.119
many people can differentially differentiate between one and the other.

662
00:35:36.280 --> 00:35:40.519
But there've also been many instances where violent acts and

663
00:35:40.559 --> 00:35:44.559
they've they've quized the people who have been prosecuted and

664
00:35:45.440 --> 00:35:49.599
they admit that it's there's been triggers, triggers, you know,

665
00:35:49.679 --> 00:35:54.480
for what they've done and seeing violence on screen apparently

666
00:35:54.559 --> 00:35:56.400
is one of those triggers. So I don't I'm not

667
00:35:56.559 --> 00:36:00.400
questioning that the jury is out rather than it's a

668
00:36:00.760 --> 00:36:03.960
quantifiable evidence, but I think it's an important point to

669
00:36:04.039 --> 00:36:06.599
raise when you're seeing a brutal movie like this one, which,

670
00:36:06.639 --> 00:36:08.199
after all, this is black humor.

671
00:36:08.320 --> 00:36:09.360
That's that's the nature of it.

672
00:36:09.440 --> 00:36:10.920
I'm not even sure we're allowed to say that you

673
00:36:11.000 --> 00:36:14.679
use that those two terms together, but you get my my,

674
00:36:14.679 --> 00:36:17.360
my gist by saying what I'm saying.

675
00:36:17.639 --> 00:36:22.840
All right, let's let's move on to another movie, which.

676
00:36:22.960 --> 00:36:23.599
A minute of score.

677
00:36:23.719 --> 00:36:26.719
So this one else, I'm sorry, I haven't even scored. Okay,

678
00:36:27.239 --> 00:36:30.360
let's let's do this. So I'll probably go high high

679
00:36:30.400 --> 00:36:32.480
ball on this one compared to the rest of you.

680
00:36:32.760 --> 00:36:36.400
So let's start with Let's start with you, Sandy three

681
00:36:37.559 --> 00:36:38.239
three out of ten.

682
00:36:38.480 --> 00:36:42.079
Okay, that's just because the production values that I thought

683
00:36:42.079 --> 00:36:42.760
were quite good.

684
00:36:42.840 --> 00:36:44.079
And how good looking he is?

685
00:36:46.119 --> 00:36:49.239
See all right, he read it and that was something

686
00:36:49.320 --> 00:36:52.400
like show do or something, because they would Pamela Anderson

687
00:36:52.440 --> 00:36:55.039
looks you probably would have you pride us.

688
00:36:55.480 --> 00:36:58.960
Yeah, idea, although she actually doesn't look that good, really, Greg,

689
00:36:59.000 --> 00:37:00.840
does she? I mean, her bodies good but her face

690
00:37:00.920 --> 00:37:03.159
is not really good at all. She's really bearing all

691
00:37:03.199 --> 00:37:06.440
of her fifty seven years there. I mean, she ain't

692
00:37:06.480 --> 00:37:09.840
the sex symbol that she once was. I mean this

693
00:37:09.880 --> 00:37:12.280
guy I'm talking about here, he's you know, in his

694
00:37:12.400 --> 00:37:15.719
thirties or maybe early forties, and he's definitely a bit

695
00:37:15.760 --> 00:37:16.320
of I Candy.

696
00:37:16.599 --> 00:37:19.000
But you know, I mean, you're a man of a

697
00:37:19.000 --> 00:37:19.599
certain age.

698
00:37:19.639 --> 00:37:21.599
So if you still see Pam Anderson as a bit

699
00:37:21.599 --> 00:37:23.519
of I candy, I guess that's your preromative.

700
00:37:24.039 --> 00:37:26.159
You're getting all hot and bothered again here, Sandy. This

701
00:37:26.199 --> 00:37:28.480
is very good on what No, I'm not I think?

702
00:37:30.159 --> 00:37:34.360
All right, well regardless, sorry Gregor, you were going to respond, no.

703
00:37:34.920 --> 00:37:36.639
I said my bit. I'll pull me hear you now?

704
00:37:38.480 --> 00:37:38.880
Very good?

705
00:37:39.039 --> 00:37:41.159
All right, Well, well, don't put you in too much.

706
00:37:41.199 --> 00:37:42.320
Give me a score for the monkey.

707
00:37:42.840 --> 00:37:45.519
Oh I like a bit of a dilly pleasure. I'd

708
00:37:45.519 --> 00:37:46.840
go for six to six.

709
00:37:46.679 --> 00:37:47.920
And a half right now.

710
00:37:47.960 --> 00:37:50.280
And it's m I rated ninety eight minutes ago, and Peter,

711
00:37:50.719 --> 00:37:52.400
I'm scared to ask go for it.

712
00:37:53.480 --> 00:37:56.199
This is this discussion is almost turning into the Vogue

713
00:37:56.239 --> 00:38:01.360
review of how people look on screen? Yes, using anyway, Now,

714
00:38:01.400 --> 00:38:03.039
I give Monkey five out of ten.

715
00:38:03.440 --> 00:38:06.480
Okay, so three, five, six and I'm high market seven.

716
00:38:07.079 --> 00:38:09.559
I looked at it through the lens of the audience

717
00:38:09.599 --> 00:38:13.800
that it's coveting, and in spite of everything that I've

718
00:38:13.840 --> 00:38:17.920
said where I don't like violence, et cetera, if you

719
00:38:17.960 --> 00:38:19.840
look at it as cartoon violence.

720
00:38:19.519 --> 00:38:21.840
Perhaps perhaps that's the way to do it.

721
00:38:22.199 --> 00:38:25.159
And I mean it's it's really an excuse to see

722
00:38:25.320 --> 00:38:28.360
one more form of garrotting or killing or whatever, which

723
00:38:28.679 --> 00:38:31.400
I must admit as a concept doesn't appeal to me.

724
00:38:31.480 --> 00:38:34.639
But I see what they've done and why they've done

725
00:38:34.719 --> 00:38:35.360
what they've done.

726
00:38:36.119 --> 00:38:38.639
Let us move on to a movie.

727
00:38:39.159 --> 00:38:42.119
Greg, you've been surprised by the couple of films we've

728
00:38:42.119 --> 00:38:47.360
talked about thus far. Here's another one that I dare say, well,

729
00:38:47.119 --> 00:38:50.239
you'll feel the same way about, and that's the latest

730
00:38:50.239 --> 00:38:52.960
Bridget Jones movie. Did you, I mean, before I talk

731
00:38:53.199 --> 00:38:56.440
in any detail about it, were you surprised at how

732
00:38:57.000 --> 00:38:58.360
surprisingly good?

733
00:38:58.440 --> 00:39:00.000
Or better? Thought?

734
00:39:00.400 --> 00:39:02.800
When I went there, I had no expectations to watch, however,

735
00:39:03.000 --> 00:39:05.679
because the fourth film in the series spent nine years

736
00:39:05.719 --> 00:39:08.880
since the last one, and a couple.

737
00:39:08.599 --> 00:39:11.760
Of Bridget Jones sequels were pretty ordinary, so I did

738
00:39:11.920 --> 00:39:13.440
know what to expect. From this one, but I found

739
00:39:13.440 --> 00:39:14.800
myself pleasantly surprised.

740
00:39:15.079 --> 00:39:15.840
Yeah, I mean, were you?

741
00:39:16.119 --> 00:39:18.639
I was surprised that they're going back to the Will again,

742
00:39:18.800 --> 00:39:21.320
you know, like really they want to do it again?

743
00:39:22.239 --> 00:39:25.079
You know, I understand what Tom Cruise and whatever I

744
00:39:25.079 --> 00:39:27.519
have done with Top Gun and that Will. That worked

745
00:39:27.639 --> 00:39:30.159
very well, even though it was it you, Peter who

746
00:39:30.199 --> 00:39:32.159
didn't like Top Gun the sequel.

747
00:39:32.519 --> 00:39:35.199
Correct. Yeah, is there anything you liked, Peter?

748
00:39:35.559 --> 00:39:39.559
Sorry, there were plenty of films I've liked.

749
00:39:40.239 --> 00:39:42.639
Okay, good, I'm very pleased to hear that.

750
00:39:43.239 --> 00:39:47.039
Okay, so well, okay, well I'll start with that question

751
00:39:47.400 --> 00:39:50.960
from you. Did you were you pleasantly surprised or not?

752
00:39:51.480 --> 00:39:54.559
About Bridget Joe. I can always almost taste your answer.

753
00:39:55.000 --> 00:39:56.400
Bridget Jones mad about the boy?

754
00:39:57.039 --> 00:39:58.440
It's delicious.

755
00:39:59.119 --> 00:40:03.360
No, I not surprised, of course.

756
00:40:03.440 --> 00:40:03.559
Not.

757
00:40:03.760 --> 00:40:03.920
No.

758
00:40:04.159 --> 00:40:06.400
And Sandy, I want you to see this one and

759
00:40:06.679 --> 00:40:09.159
see from a from a female perspective.

760
00:40:09.679 --> 00:40:12.519
Have you seen any of the Bridget joneses. I've seen

761
00:40:12.639 --> 00:40:14.559
enough to know that I didn't want to see this one,

762
00:40:15.559 --> 00:40:18.440
and so we can have this one all to yourselves.

763
00:40:18.480 --> 00:40:22.199
I'm really not interested, and from what I have heard

764
00:40:22.280 --> 00:40:29.840
so far about it, Rene Zellwigger's acting prowess has depreciated

765
00:40:29.880 --> 00:40:30.320
with her.

766
00:40:30.400 --> 00:40:34.679
Us I can't mean I have some text won The

767
00:40:34.719 --> 00:40:36.559
Oscar for Judy.

768
00:40:37.400 --> 00:40:40.920
Was the first film since since Judy that she's done. Yeah,

769
00:40:40.960 --> 00:40:43.079
and I think she does what she does, that's a

770
00:40:43.159 --> 00:40:46.199
joy Laiden movie. There's Bridge Jones mad about the Boy.

771
00:40:46.440 --> 00:40:48.800
It's long, it's probably longer than it needed to be

772
00:40:49.000 --> 00:40:53.039
at two out five minutes, it's m rated, and as

773
00:40:53.039 --> 00:40:55.360
far as I'm concerned, pardon.

774
00:40:55.039 --> 00:40:58.599
Me, it could be equal to the best Bridge Jones film.

775
00:40:58.599 --> 00:41:01.039
I mean it dates back to what two thousand and one,

776
00:41:01.119 --> 00:41:03.079
wasn't it Greg that it started something like that?

777
00:41:03.639 --> 00:41:03.840
Yeah?

778
00:41:04.119 --> 00:41:07.599
Yeah, and I mean Jones also narrates, as you know,

779
00:41:07.639 --> 00:41:10.599
that's what she does, and it's filled with laughter and

780
00:41:10.719 --> 00:41:13.639
romance and reverence. And best of all, she gets to

781
00:41:13.639 --> 00:41:15.559
be a cougar Sandy, right.

782
00:41:16.400 --> 00:41:18.239
Who means something that I can relate to?

783
00:41:19.639 --> 00:41:23.599
No, no, no, there's no implication. All you'd need to do,

784
00:41:23.679 --> 00:41:26.239
Sandy snap your fingers. The boys had gun running, Let's

785
00:41:26.280 --> 00:41:30.840
be honest. Come on, you know of all ages sizes, yeah, anyway,

786
00:41:31.559 --> 00:41:34.360
and all chaking. Aside that there's sort of this toy

787
00:41:34.400 --> 00:41:36.039
boy hot to try, so you could have seen this

788
00:41:36.119 --> 00:41:37.719
movie just for the toy boy Sandy.

789
00:41:37.840 --> 00:41:39.280
Yeah, thanks, I know.

790
00:41:39.840 --> 00:41:41.760
Okay, So let me tell you a little bit about

791
00:41:41.760 --> 00:41:44.599
the story. Her husband, the love of her life. I'm

792
00:41:44.599 --> 00:41:48.000
talking about Bridget Jones. Mark Darcy, played by a Colin Firth,

793
00:41:48.280 --> 00:41:52.760
is no longer. He was killed in an explosion while

794
00:41:52.840 --> 00:41:56.320
on a humanitarian mission in Dart for four years earlier.

795
00:41:56.719 --> 00:41:59.239
So Bridget was left as a widow a couple of.

796
00:41:59.159 --> 00:42:02.119
Small children torn and she still dreams of him, misses

797
00:42:02.159 --> 00:42:04.920
him terribly, as do the children, a ten year old

798
00:42:04.960 --> 00:42:07.760
son called Billy and a daughter Mabel, who was six,

799
00:42:08.519 --> 00:42:12.519
and her life is rather chaotic. She hasn't moved on.

800
00:42:13.360 --> 00:42:16.360
Most of her friends tell us she desperately needs a shag.

801
00:42:17.159 --> 00:42:20.199
So one day she decides to try to take control

802
00:42:20.280 --> 00:42:23.559
of her own future, and with a choice description, one

803
00:42:23.599 --> 00:42:26.760
of her besties even signs her up to a dating app.

804
00:42:27.599 --> 00:42:29.920
But it's while trying to rescue her children from the

805
00:42:29.920 --> 00:42:33.239
branches of a large tree in a park that fortune

806
00:42:33.320 --> 00:42:36.400
really smiles upon her, and that's when she and they

807
00:42:36.920 --> 00:42:40.360
are rescued by a handsome groundkeeper. He's a grandkeeper in

808
00:42:40.440 --> 00:42:43.920
his late twenties whose name happens to be Roster macduff.

809
00:42:44.280 --> 00:42:49.119
Now, is Rockster a real name? Roxtr? Can anybody? Yes? No?

810
00:42:49.840 --> 00:42:53.559
Made up? Americ made up? Yeah?

811
00:42:53.880 --> 00:42:57.519
Okay, so I don't know of anybody, clearly I'm not

812
00:42:57.559 --> 00:42:58.599
well read enough, Sandy.

813
00:42:58.719 --> 00:43:01.000
But is there a real Rockster in real life? Somebody

814
00:43:01.079 --> 00:43:04.239
is named Rockster? I don't know any do you? You

815
00:43:04.239 --> 00:43:06.599
don't know anyone called that? But wait up for the

816
00:43:06.639 --> 00:43:08.920
next generation of babies born, there may well be.

817
00:43:09.239 --> 00:43:13.719
Okay, hang on, while we're talking now, folks, I'm Rockster

818
00:43:13.960 --> 00:43:14.559
as a name.

819
00:43:15.320 --> 00:43:18.599
I'm googling it. You know, no such thing as real

820
00:43:18.679 --> 00:43:19.440
names anymore.

821
00:43:19.480 --> 00:43:22.519
It's not a commonly recognized name, but it does appear

822
00:43:22.559 --> 00:43:25.079
as a surname, particularly in the UK.

823
00:43:25.599 --> 00:43:25.960
That's it.

824
00:43:26.519 --> 00:43:27.360
They've made it up.

825
00:43:27.679 --> 00:43:31.159
Yeah, okay, well but hang on. Aren't all names made us?

826
00:43:31.719 --> 00:43:34.000
Not all? No, I don't think so. Well, I guess

827
00:43:34.000 --> 00:43:34.800
eventually they.

828
00:43:34.719 --> 00:43:38.239
Are, because I mean, before names were, somebody had to

829
00:43:38.719 --> 00:43:40.679
name things and they made them up.

830
00:43:41.599 --> 00:43:45.360
The name of the future. Well, yeah, I actually don't

831
00:43:45.360 --> 00:43:45.719
mind it.

832
00:43:45.760 --> 00:43:48.519
The interesting thing about it, and it doesn't matter whether

833
00:43:48.559 --> 00:43:50.719
I mind it or not. But the interesting thing is,

834
00:43:50.840 --> 00:43:54.039
of late, in the last decade or so, the x's

835
00:43:54.079 --> 00:43:56.599
in names have become quite common, haven't they. Andy, there's

836
00:43:56.599 --> 00:43:58.559
a lot of x's in names.

837
00:43:58.280 --> 00:44:01.920
That it used to be a c K. That's true.

838
00:44:01.800 --> 00:44:03.800
Ah yeah, there you go, so Gregory.

839
00:44:04.440 --> 00:44:07.000
I'm not sure he'd put an X into greg but

840
00:44:07.039 --> 00:44:08.039
I'm sure they'd find a way.

841
00:44:08.039 --> 00:44:14.800
It could be a silent ex grex. Grits.

842
00:44:15.000 --> 00:44:17.480
It's kind of the grits that somebody has in America

843
00:44:17.519 --> 00:44:20.440
and their cereal. Anyway, getting back to the movie, You've

844
00:44:20.480 --> 00:44:25.360
got this handsome ground keeper late twenties that texts Bridget Jones,

845
00:44:25.360 --> 00:44:28.119
and suddenly everything's looking up, including the fact that she's

846
00:44:28.119 --> 00:44:29.639
actually reclaimed.

847
00:44:29.239 --> 00:44:29.920
Her old job.

848
00:44:29.960 --> 00:44:33.320
If you remember she was a television producer. She hadn't

849
00:44:33.360 --> 00:44:36.519
been working, according to this movie, for a period of years.

850
00:44:36.960 --> 00:44:38.960
Also in the picture, and he does what he does

851
00:44:39.039 --> 00:44:43.039
so damn well is Jones's male Powell former lover, the

852
00:44:43.280 --> 00:44:47.760
lascivious Daniel Cleaver played by none other than Hugh Grant,

853
00:44:48.320 --> 00:44:51.400
who is just killing him at the moment. I mean,

854
00:44:51.599 --> 00:44:54.559
whatever he does seems to turn to gold. And that's

855
00:44:54.599 --> 00:44:56.679
not to overlook a new science teacher at the school

856
00:44:56.679 --> 00:44:59.599
that Billy and Mabel attend, whose name is Scott Wallaker

857
00:45:00.159 --> 00:45:01.320
by Chiwetel Edgy four.

858
00:45:01.360 --> 00:45:05.079
He's got a distinct way of rounding up children. Would

859
00:45:05.079 --> 00:45:06.840
you would you countenance that?

860
00:45:07.000 --> 00:45:12.960
Greg in no right, whistle's only any good for pa classes.

861
00:45:13.320 --> 00:45:14.159
Pe classes.

862
00:45:14.199 --> 00:45:17.679
Okay, does it work on dogs and small children at home?

863
00:45:17.760 --> 00:45:21.480
I don't know anyway, that's what he does now. Helen

864
00:45:21.559 --> 00:45:24.840
Fielding who wrote the book Bridge Jones's Diary, which was

865
00:45:24.880 --> 00:45:27.960
the starting point for the film franchise. She also has

866
00:45:28.000 --> 00:45:30.079
a big hand in writing all the film scripts, of course,

867
00:45:30.079 --> 00:45:32.599
and also back on the writer's desk is Dan Maser,

868
00:45:33.039 --> 00:45:36.960
who co wrote Bridge Jones's Baby. And then there's Abbie Morgan.

869
00:45:39.239 --> 00:45:41.800
I'm getting music again. Who's Who's music.

870
00:45:41.559 --> 00:45:43.400
Playing in a background here? Now?

871
00:45:43.440 --> 00:45:46.639
Collectively they have done what I think is a terrific job.

872
00:45:46.719 --> 00:45:48.480
Many of the site gags, the one line is a

873
00:45:49.079 --> 00:45:52.480
price lesson. Each Bridget Jones film has a different director.

874
00:45:52.920 --> 00:45:55.360
This time it's Michael Morris, who takes to the task

875
00:45:55.400 --> 00:45:58.679
with relish and injects a great deal of feeling. I

876
00:45:58.719 --> 00:46:00.840
thought the cast was in fine for what a formidable

877
00:46:00.840 --> 00:46:03.719
group of actors they are. Jones never takes herself too

878
00:46:03.719 --> 00:46:06.960
seriously and it's primarily upbeat, and I thought Renees Elwiger

879
00:46:07.079 --> 00:46:10.400
was delightful and assured as the film centerpiece, like putting

880
00:46:10.400 --> 00:46:13.880
on an old dressing gown, and we've said, well, Hugh

881
00:46:13.920 --> 00:46:17.480
Grant really in his element is the gleefully inappropriate Daniel

882
00:46:17.559 --> 00:46:20.880
Kleaver and Leo wood All does and says all the

883
00:46:20.960 --> 00:46:24.039
right things as Roxt McDuff and chewettl Edgy Fall is

884
00:46:24.679 --> 00:46:27.440
intelligent and responsible as mister Walliker, and he sort of

885
00:46:27.480 --> 00:46:30.360
eases up as the movie. He goes on a couple

886
00:46:30.360 --> 00:46:33.199
of the really great roles in this one. Emma Thompson,

887
00:46:33.360 --> 00:46:37.840
wow flawless as Jones's friend and guynecologist. And Eila Fisher

888
00:46:38.159 --> 00:46:41.039
our very own make sure she's noticed as a harried

889
00:46:41.079 --> 00:46:44.159
mother next door neighbor to Bridget Jones. Quite a memorable

890
00:46:44.199 --> 00:46:46.760
cameo from her and honored goes. I mean, you know,

891
00:46:46.800 --> 00:46:49.880
there's a lot brought back here from the past movies,

892
00:46:50.280 --> 00:46:53.599
So many juicy parts in this offering. One thing sure,

893
00:46:54.239 --> 00:46:56.599
One thing is for sure, rather mad about the boy

894
00:46:56.880 --> 00:47:00.960
outshone my expectations. I was worried about the dipping back

895
00:47:01.000 --> 00:47:03.199
into it again, but I needed the threat it because

896
00:47:03.239 --> 00:47:05.960
truth be told, I really enjoyed myself. The movie hangs

897
00:47:05.960 --> 00:47:08.559
together really beautifully and puts a big smile on your face.

898
00:47:08.880 --> 00:47:09.960
Who could ask for more?

899
00:47:10.480 --> 00:47:13.679
Greg King? Not a lot more?

900
00:47:14.280 --> 00:47:16.519
Yeah, I thought, As I said at the start, I

901
00:47:16.559 --> 00:47:19.559
wasn't expecting much from this fourth in Storman, but I

902
00:47:19.599 --> 00:47:21.679
was pleasantly surprised by the film. I' mu sure we

903
00:47:21.800 --> 00:47:25.599
astue gan to soeld with this committed performance as Bridget Jones,

904
00:47:25.719 --> 00:47:28.719
who experienced as many awkward, embarrassing incidents in the film,

905
00:47:28.920 --> 00:47:31.360
which is part part of the ongoing charm of a

906
00:47:31.400 --> 00:47:35.920
film there. Now this is this also repeat some of

907
00:47:35.920 --> 00:47:37.920
the beeks from the first film there where she's got

908
00:47:37.920 --> 00:47:40.519
to make a choice between two potential suitors there, the

909
00:47:40.639 --> 00:47:44.880
hunky rockster and the straight laced mister Wallaker there.

910
00:47:46.000 --> 00:47:48.960
But I thought she threw herself.

911
00:47:48.599 --> 00:47:54.440
Into this role, was comfortably with all the character flaws

912
00:47:54.440 --> 00:47:58.320
and idiosyncrasies there. And there's plenty of physical comedy and

913
00:47:58.320 --> 00:48:02.199
lots of prapfalls which she does well snappy one miners

914
00:48:02.199 --> 00:48:05.440
and sit gigs, but also deal with more serious serious

915
00:48:05.519 --> 00:48:08.719
scenes like overcoming grief, family and the trials of single

916
00:48:08.800 --> 00:48:11.639
parenthood there. So it added a bit more heft to

917
00:48:11.719 --> 00:48:15.280
the material there, And there's an element of sadness permeating

918
00:48:15.559 --> 00:48:18.159
early segments of this film when she's dealing with the

919
00:48:18.159 --> 00:48:21.679
loss of mister Darcy. There also an ara of nostalgia

920
00:48:21.719 --> 00:48:24.280
there with the casting of bringing back all all the

921
00:48:24.280 --> 00:48:27.880
main characters from the other Bridget Jones films with cameos

922
00:48:27.880 --> 00:48:32.360
from people like Jim Broadbent. I loved Emma Thompson is

923
00:48:32.360 --> 00:48:35.440
the guy in the college just there, and I agree

924
00:48:35.599 --> 00:48:37.079
Hugh Rant is one of the best things in the

925
00:48:37.079 --> 00:48:39.599
film there he gets some of the biggest last year,

926
00:48:39.880 --> 00:48:43.079
and no one plays a lectures reprobate.

927
00:48:42.639 --> 00:48:43.599
Quite like he does.

928
00:48:43.920 --> 00:48:48.559
No. I totally agree, Peter, was there any redeeming feature

929
00:48:48.599 --> 00:48:50.480
for you?

930
00:48:50.519 --> 00:48:50.760
Look?

931
00:48:50.800 --> 00:48:55.199
I liked Emma Thompson. I liked some humorous bits in

932
00:48:55.239 --> 00:48:58.440
the film. I like the depiction of the two children,

933
00:48:59.000 --> 00:49:05.079
who I thought were really nicely portrayed, helping Bridget through

934
00:49:05.199 --> 00:49:09.320
her grief to some extent. But I felt that it's

935
00:49:09.360 --> 00:49:12.440
the Bridget Jones character the ways depicted in this film

936
00:49:12.440 --> 00:49:16.039
that was a problem for me. She comes across as childlike,

937
00:49:17.280 --> 00:49:22.440
as regressive, and as silly at times, and I don't

938
00:49:22.440 --> 00:49:25.440
know if that's the way the character should be depicted.

939
00:49:25.519 --> 00:49:28.079
I thought it would be a little bit more adult

940
00:49:28.079 --> 00:49:30.760
and a bit more mature and because of that.

941
00:49:31.119 --> 00:49:33.199
But I mean, go back, go back to two thousand

942
00:49:33.199 --> 00:49:36.159
and one, that's her. Do people change character? I mean,

943
00:49:36.199 --> 00:49:38.800
she was an adult in the first installment as well.

944
00:49:38.880 --> 00:49:41.760
Right twenty years ago, she'd be what fifty ish now,

945
00:49:41.880 --> 00:49:43.440
I presume that that's the sort.

946
00:49:43.239 --> 00:49:47.199
Of correct Well when it was first depicted, it was

947
00:49:47.360 --> 00:49:51.599
right for her character. But she has experienced grief, She's

948
00:49:51.679 --> 00:49:55.239
experienced a lot of things over the twenty plus years

949
00:49:55.280 --> 00:49:58.360
over the four films now, and I would have thought

950
00:49:58.400 --> 00:50:02.559
that the character would also have grown up, developed and

951
00:50:02.639 --> 00:50:07.119
been and become more interesting. So when the other characters

952
00:50:07.119 --> 00:50:10.159
in the film, like you, Grant and everyone else, becomes

953
00:50:10.920 --> 00:50:15.239
more amusing and valid and interesting, then you know you're

954
00:50:15.280 --> 00:50:18.719
in trouble with the central character. And Bridget Jon.

955
00:50:19.039 --> 00:50:20.480
Let me just interrupt there for a moment.

956
00:50:20.920 --> 00:50:24.800
I mean, unfortunately, I've got a really good friend of mine,

957
00:50:24.920 --> 00:50:28.440
and she's gone through quite a bit in recent times,

958
00:50:28.800 --> 00:50:33.000
and but a really buoyant sort of personality. Now, you know,

959
00:50:33.119 --> 00:50:35.840
I've known her for a long long time, and even

960
00:50:35.960 --> 00:50:42.760
through the downtimes, she has maintained the same persona which

961
00:50:42.800 --> 00:50:46.400
I admire so much. And so I mean, I think

962
00:50:46.480 --> 00:50:49.000
I think this is I'm afraid that I think this

963
00:50:49.119 --> 00:50:52.280
is real, even though it's an imagined character. I get that,

964
00:50:52.599 --> 00:50:55.559
but I actually thought it was, you know, pinpoint accurate,

965
00:50:55.599 --> 00:50:57.320
and I thought it was appropriate.

966
00:50:57.400 --> 00:50:59.280
So I've got a totally different view of that. Keep

967
00:50:59.320 --> 00:51:00.000
it keep going over.

968
00:51:00.760 --> 00:51:03.199
Yeah, okay, I'll disagree with you because I felt that

969
00:51:03.239 --> 00:51:06.440
the depiction of the character was regressive, and that's the

970
00:51:06.519 --> 00:51:09.199
problem that I have with it. Look, there are some

971
00:51:09.599 --> 00:51:12.480
little nice bits here and there, and the idea of

972
00:51:12.960 --> 00:51:17.440
her sorting out which of the two suitors, so to speak,

973
00:51:18.199 --> 00:51:20.960
are going to be her love interest, which probably will

974
00:51:20.960 --> 00:51:25.159
create another Bridget Jones film, But I was waiting for

975
00:51:25.239 --> 00:51:27.760
a diary and there's hardly one in sight.

976
00:51:28.400 --> 00:51:29.199
I would have liked.

977
00:51:30.199 --> 00:51:32.199
That's the word diary out of the title the time,

978
00:51:32.880 --> 00:51:36.559
That's right, And I thought, yeah, I don't know. Look,

979
00:51:36.880 --> 00:51:41.639
the film is not bad, but it's certainly not the great, humorous,

980
00:51:42.400 --> 00:51:46.199
brilliant sort of fourth version of Bridget Jones that perhaps

981
00:51:46.519 --> 00:51:47.840
some people are saying it is.

982
00:51:48.199 --> 00:51:50.840
There's certainly better than Bidick Jones edged reason.

983
00:51:51.480 --> 00:51:56.079
Yeah, well, okay, so Peter, you've seen all of them.

984
00:51:56.119 --> 00:51:59.719
I'm presuming, yes, where would this one sit of the

985
00:51:59.760 --> 00:52:01.599
four second best?

986
00:52:02.400 --> 00:52:04.599
No? I put it as number four. I think the

987
00:52:04.639 --> 00:52:08.039
first one was the best one, the second one was

988
00:52:08.079 --> 00:52:12.480
not bad, and the third one had its moments here

989
00:52:12.519 --> 00:52:15.639
and there. But the fourth one I think has reached

990
00:52:15.960 --> 00:52:17.079
a lower level for me.

991
00:52:17.679 --> 00:52:20.079
Now, I don't think this is going to influence you

992
00:52:20.119 --> 00:52:25.480
in any way, Sandy, but somebody who I know, who

993
00:52:25.760 --> 00:52:30.400
I don't know very well, but who basically reads reviews

994
00:52:30.519 --> 00:52:32.320
or reads various reviews.

995
00:52:31.920 --> 00:52:35.280
And I recommended this to her sent me.

996
00:52:37.280 --> 00:52:40.320
A short text because she wasn't going to see this movie,

997
00:52:40.400 --> 00:52:42.480
right like you're not going to see the movie, And

998
00:52:42.880 --> 00:52:45.519
she said this is what I'm reading this out without

999
00:52:45.599 --> 00:52:49.480
naming her. Saw Bridget Jones today and loved it with

1000
00:52:49.559 --> 00:52:50.639
love hearts all over it.

1001
00:52:50.960 --> 00:52:51.920
So there you go, Peta.

1002
00:52:52.000 --> 00:52:55.360
There are people who you know we've got an influence here,

1003
00:52:55.840 --> 00:52:58.360
and I don't want you to turn everybody off Bridge

1004
00:52:58.440 --> 00:53:00.519
Jones mad about a boy. I'm going to start this

1005
00:53:00.559 --> 00:53:03.280
one rated M one hundred and twenty five minutes.

1006
00:53:03.519 --> 00:53:06.079
I'm giving it an eight out of ten, Greg.

1007
00:53:06.440 --> 00:53:07.239
Six out of ten.

1008
00:53:08.280 --> 00:53:11.280
Pisa, are you passing it? Yes?

1009
00:53:11.400 --> 00:53:14.480
But I didn't realize that we had to promote films

1010
00:53:14.519 --> 00:53:17.079
and always give a good review. I thought we were

1011
00:53:17.320 --> 00:53:22.320
meant to give our own opinions rather than being pushed

1012
00:53:22.360 --> 00:53:22.960
into something.

1013
00:53:23.079 --> 00:53:25.320
So I don't always promote him.

1014
00:53:25.599 --> 00:53:29.960
I couldn't get more honest about my opinions on exactly enough.

1015
00:53:30.400 --> 00:53:37.360
And cars have reckoned pinions, steering too. Now, what's that?

1016
00:53:39.000 --> 00:53:41.159
It's old style, that's all I can say. No, no,

1017
00:53:41.480 --> 00:53:42.039
excuse me.

1018
00:53:42.239 --> 00:53:45.719
There are movies I I suppose I enjoy.

1019
00:53:46.320 --> 00:53:49.400
No, I won't say enjoy when you're writing a negative

1020
00:53:49.440 --> 00:53:51.800
review or speaking about something in a negative way.

1021
00:53:52.239 --> 00:53:55.000
I don't love everything. There's there are.

1022
00:53:55.599 --> 00:53:59.599
My worst movies of the year are appalling, right, So,

1023
00:54:00.559 --> 00:54:05.840
but I suppose at times maybe I'm more charitable or

1024
00:54:06.199 --> 00:54:08.920
I look at the audience instead of say okay, well,

1025
00:54:08.960 --> 00:54:11.719
I can see merit in that from that their perspective.

1026
00:54:12.159 --> 00:54:15.360
That's kind of the only different difference of opinion that

1027
00:54:15.400 --> 00:54:17.159
you and I. Well, no, we have a lot of

1028
00:54:17.159 --> 00:54:19.960
difference as of opinion. You don't support any football team,

1029
00:54:20.159 --> 00:54:22.840
in particular Essendon. I haven't mentioned Essendon for a while,

1030
00:54:22.840 --> 00:54:24.400
but did you want to talk about the Bombers?

1031
00:54:24.719 --> 00:54:27.760
I give Bridget Jones five out of ten.

1032
00:54:31.239 --> 00:54:35.440
Well, Gully all right, it is the UK's biggest film franchise.

1033
00:54:36.079 --> 00:54:38.760
I have to say, well, I had the biggest box

1034
00:54:38.800 --> 00:54:41.519
office opening of any romantic coming in Britain.

1035
00:54:42.039 --> 00:54:46.599
Yeah, is that right? Yep? How's it done in Australia.

1036
00:54:46.800 --> 00:54:49.559
I haven't really followed it. Is there any data?

1037
00:54:49.599 --> 00:54:53.039
I don't know, but that's all I heard on your

1038
00:54:53.039 --> 00:54:54.199
news on the weekend.

1039
00:54:54.639 --> 00:54:57.039
I thought James Bond would be the bit, the biggest

1040
00:54:57.079 --> 00:54:58.199
British franchise.

1041
00:54:58.800 --> 00:55:00.920
Yeah, that's what I would have thought too. And by

1042
00:55:00.920 --> 00:55:03.159
the way, this week they've sold it, haven't they.

1043
00:55:03.400 --> 00:55:06.960
They're not say Amazon, yes, yes, of it.

1044
00:55:07.000 --> 00:55:08.840
I think that I was.

1045
00:55:08.920 --> 00:55:12.239
I was pretty staggered by that too. I mean that

1046
00:55:12.400 --> 00:55:15.800
they retain fifty percent. Barbara Broccoley and Broccoli is that

1047
00:55:16.000 --> 00:55:16.360
her name?

1048
00:55:16.480 --> 00:55:16.760
Yes?

1049
00:55:17.159 --> 00:55:20.119
And who's the other one? I've gone blank, there's two

1050
00:55:20.159 --> 00:55:24.000
of them. I apologize, We've got to go. I've just realized, Sandy,

1051
00:55:24.079 --> 00:55:27.760
what a pleasure, Peter. It's an ordeal, but it's a

1052
00:55:27.800 --> 00:55:32.039
pleasure one.

1053
00:55:30.840 --> 00:55:35.280
Saying I love you, Peter, don't no, we love you, Peter,

1054
00:55:35.800 --> 00:55:38.400
we do. Sticks and stones will break my bones. We

1055
00:55:38.440 --> 00:55:40.880
love you. And Greg we love you too. You know this?

1056
00:55:41.079 --> 00:55:43.519
Thank you? This is a love Phil Can you feel

1057
00:55:43.519 --> 00:55:44.559
the love in the room?

1058
00:55:44.760 --> 00:55:44.880
Oh?

1059
00:55:45.000 --> 00:55:48.639
Yeah? On that? And Sandy, your gorgeous you know, as

1060
00:55:48.679 --> 00:55:50.559
I've loved, love all around.

1061
00:55:51.000 --> 00:55:54.039
Speak to you next week, Folks. First, on film and entertainment,

1062
00:55:54.119 --> 00:55:55.599
over and out,
