WEBVTT

1
00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:01.720
First on Film and Entertainment.

2
00:00:01.800 --> 00:00:05.759
We have got Greg King, Peter Krause, Sandy Kay and

3
00:00:05.919 --> 00:00:09.560
Jackie Hamilton. So the gains back together again, and last

4
00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:11.720
week we had a bit of fun talking about a

5
00:00:11.800 --> 00:00:14.359
number of the Oscar nominated movies. There are a few

6
00:00:14.359 --> 00:00:16.920
others that we need to talk about that missed out

7
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:20.679
potentially but are still worthy. One of them is Baby Girl. Now,

8
00:00:21.039 --> 00:00:25.440
it's a very controversial film, and it's controversial because obviously

9
00:00:25.519 --> 00:00:28.879
it talks about sex, involves sex, involves kinks.

10
00:00:28.559 --> 00:00:29.480
All of that stuff.

11
00:00:29.719 --> 00:00:33.719
But it's also about Nicole Kidman taking on roles that,

12
00:00:34.359 --> 00:00:35.479
let's say, adventurous.

13
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:37.119
And I've got to say, I don't know about the

14
00:00:37.159 --> 00:00:37.880
rest of you, but.

15
00:00:37.920 --> 00:00:40.600
I admire the fact that she chooses films that are

16
00:00:40.640 --> 00:00:42.640
not necessarily easy topics.

17
00:00:42.920 --> 00:00:46.719
What do you think, Sandy, I, well, I.

18
00:00:46.840 --> 00:00:50.759
Agree with you one hundred percent in that she was

19
00:00:50.880 --> 00:00:55.600
quite amazing in this film. And you're right, it's right

20
00:00:55.640 --> 00:00:58.320
out there. I know you're going to tell everybody what

21
00:00:58.439 --> 00:01:00.920
the story is here, but you've got to be prepared

22
00:01:00.920 --> 00:01:03.920
for a bit of a sex ride in this film.

23
00:01:03.960 --> 00:01:06.920
And I'm just left wondering what Keith Urban had to

24
00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:09.280
say and what he thought of her role in this.

25
00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:12.400
Well, I mean it's not when you say it's right

26
00:01:12.439 --> 00:01:12.840
out there.

27
00:01:12.920 --> 00:01:17.280
Okay, it's got certain elements, but it's not basic instinct.

28
00:01:17.480 --> 00:01:22.079
I reckon a lot of it's suggestive rather than explicit,

29
00:01:22.200 --> 00:01:25.959
and that's obviously they wanted to play it. So yeah,

30
00:01:26.400 --> 00:01:28.159
I didn't think it was all you know, it was

31
00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:30.640
all that far. I think they could movies go a

32
00:01:30.719 --> 00:01:33.599
lot further than that. And it's just I think linking

33
00:01:34.200 --> 00:01:37.280
the subject matter with Nicole Kidman doing what she's doing

34
00:01:37.319 --> 00:01:39.959
and being a cougar and all of that stuff, I

35
00:01:39.959 --> 00:01:43.079
think that's what's got the attention of a lot of people.

36
00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:45.200
What about you, Jackie, what did you think of it?

37
00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:48.000
Well, Alex, I don't necessarily agree with you when you

38
00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:52.560
say it's suggestive but not explicit. I think it's extremely explicit,

39
00:01:53.680 --> 00:01:57.719
just because it doesn't Oh, this is all right. Sandy's

40
00:01:57.760 --> 00:01:58.439
dog barking?

41
00:01:59.079 --> 00:02:02.760
Is it? Sand to it? Dog gone?

42
00:02:02.840 --> 00:02:03.040
Now?

43
00:02:03.959 --> 00:02:04.799
Do you see it?

44
00:02:05.079 --> 00:02:06.879
Do you growl back at dog the same way that

45
00:02:06.959 --> 00:02:08.639
dog growls at you, Sandy.

46
00:02:08.759 --> 00:02:10.879
No, he's just barking at something outside.

47
00:02:11.159 --> 00:02:11.800
He likes me.

48
00:02:13.360 --> 00:02:15.759
Okay, sorry, go ahead, Jackie.

49
00:02:16.479 --> 00:02:19.479
I was saying I think that Nicole Hidman's role in

50
00:02:19.560 --> 00:02:24.319
this is very explicit and shown in explicit close up.

51
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:27.800
It's just because you're used to the idea that you know,

52
00:02:29.960 --> 00:02:35.360
nudity and showing sex acts in full body is what

53
00:02:35.560 --> 00:02:36.560
being explicit is.

54
00:02:37.199 --> 00:02:39.719
Well, but hang on here, Okay, let's be clear for

55
00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:41.840
people who are going to go along and see this

56
00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:45.360
film for titillation reasons. I was going to say that

57
00:02:45.439 --> 00:02:48.759
we see her from behind, and we.

58
00:02:48.960 --> 00:02:52.199
We we just we see a flash or two of

59
00:02:52.199 --> 00:02:55.080
a nipple. That's it. I mean, it's not exactly that's

60
00:02:55.120 --> 00:02:58.360
what I'm saying. Well, that to me is not okay, mate.

61
00:02:58.439 --> 00:03:01.400
I've just gone to see as part of Midsummer the

62
00:03:01.400 --> 00:03:05.479
most explicit show I've ever seen, and that sort of

63
00:03:05.800 --> 00:03:08.000
went down to treat with the audience. But you know,

64
00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:10.840
I suppose I'm I can only compare it to other

65
00:03:10.879 --> 00:03:13.000
movies that we've seen, and I mean Basic Instinct was

66
00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:14.360
a lot more explicit than this.

67
00:03:14.680 --> 00:03:18.360
And that was nineteen ninety two. So what about you

68
00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:23.479
better find detail or the subject matter.

69
00:03:23.719 --> 00:03:27.199
But in terms of Nicole Kidman playing it, how sexually

70
00:03:27.240 --> 00:03:28.879
explicit you think baby Girl is?

71
00:03:31.159 --> 00:03:31.439
Peter?

72
00:03:32.599 --> 00:03:37.439
Oh sorry, I was getting double conversations. Look, I think

73
00:03:37.479 --> 00:03:41.120
we're missing the point of the film because yes, there

74
00:03:41.159 --> 00:03:44.199
is some sexual explicitness in so far as that she

75
00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:48.400
is a sex addict, but it's about power relationships and

76
00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:51.840
power plays and about women having power.

77
00:03:52.080 --> 00:03:53.199
I'm not questioning that at all.

78
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:56.120
But I'm saying, would you consider this to be an

79
00:03:56.159 --> 00:03:57.000
explicit movie?

80
00:03:58.919 --> 00:04:01.080
Mildly explicit? Right, Miley?

81
00:04:01.159 --> 00:04:04.319
Okay, Greg, Yeah, while we're explicit, there are a few

82
00:04:04.879 --> 00:04:08.159
sort of confronting, problematic scenes there, but it's not as

83
00:04:08.800 --> 00:04:11.680
explicit as some of the films You've said, we've seen

84
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:13.800
some eu opeion films.

85
00:04:14.080 --> 00:04:14.719
Yes, exactly.

86
00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:18.759
Look, I suppose also it's interesting here because it's is

87
00:04:18.800 --> 00:04:20.240
it long gender lines, Jackie?

88
00:04:20.360 --> 00:04:22.800
Perhaps in terms of perception.

89
00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:28.079
Absolutely, I think it is, Yes, totally. I think I'm

90
00:04:28.120 --> 00:04:30.399
saying it completely differently from how you.

91
00:04:31.120 --> 00:04:34.000
Yeah, you too, that's great, and that's why it's terrific

92
00:04:34.040 --> 00:04:35.480
that we've we've got you and Sandy on.

93
00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:38.920
I mean, this is this is a real close up,

94
00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:44.759
the close closest close up you can get during sex

95
00:04:45.519 --> 00:04:49.680
of a woman's most intimate moments. I mean, how much

96
00:04:49.720 --> 00:04:51.199
more explicitly than that.

97
00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:58.800
But it's not it's on face rather than elsewhere. Okay, Sandy,

98
00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:00.639
do you and.

99
00:05:00.600 --> 00:05:03.639
To agree with Jackie. I mean even the soundtrack has

100
00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:06.800
moaning in it. I mean, you've got to be careful

101
00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:08.959
who you attend this movie with. I have to tell you,

102
00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.199
if you're on a date and you haven't gone to

103
00:05:11.240 --> 00:05:14.040
bed with that person yet, this is not the movie

104
00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:19.480
that you want to go see.

105
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:18.600
Not a first date on.

106
00:05:19.800 --> 00:05:22.079
It's definitely a few movie.

107
00:05:22.360 --> 00:05:24.439
I don't know if you've picked your partner carefully. Maybe

108
00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:24.839
it is.

109
00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:26.480
Who knows.

110
00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:31.480
No, it's full on and she's in such compromising situations.

111
00:05:31.480 --> 00:05:33.639
I mean, it doesn't when we say it's graphic and

112
00:05:33.680 --> 00:05:36.399
out there, it's not that we see genitals and things

113
00:05:36.439 --> 00:05:36.800
like that.

114
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:38.680
It's much more subtle than that.

115
00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:42.879
I think exactly. Yep, and she's at her most vulnerable,

116
00:05:43.800 --> 00:05:46.399
and you know, I think that's explicit.

117
00:05:47.319 --> 00:05:49.879
Well, let's talk about the film a little bit more.

118
00:05:49.879 --> 00:05:52.839
It's rated runs for hundred and fourteen minutes, and to

119
00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:55.639
the outside world, this woman has the perfect life.

120
00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:59.360
She's CEO of her own company. The company's going places.

121
00:05:59.680 --> 00:06:03.480
She's up this doting theater director husband played by Antonio

122
00:06:03.639 --> 00:06:09.040
banderas couple of daughters, and she still has this metaphorical

123
00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:13.240
itch that has long needed scratching and in the most.

124
00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:23.279
Well, okay, sorry, sorry, it's just a very.

125
00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:25.680
So no, no, I'm sorry, I'm merely meally male, and

126
00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:28.360
that's the way I'm putting it. But in the most

127
00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:33.519
unlikely of circumstances, Jackie in the indeed is scratched and check.

128
00:06:36.199 --> 00:06:38.319
The same at the same time.

129
00:06:38.519 --> 00:06:41.560
Doing so puts in peril all that she's worked so

130
00:06:41.639 --> 00:06:45.560
diligently to attain. And I speak of a woman who's

131
00:06:45.800 --> 00:06:49.199
played by Nicole Kidman, whose character name is Rommy Mathis,

132
00:06:49.720 --> 00:06:53.079
and she's fashionable, she's highly regarded, and she's got a

133
00:06:53.079 --> 00:06:59.160
successful warehouse automation business. She during the business itself, engages

134
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:04.120
several new in turns, and one of these immediately catches

135
00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:07.519
her eye. Earlier on the street, she had actually witnessed

136
00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:11.560
this particular intern Calming, a ferocious dog who was in

137
00:07:11.639 --> 00:07:17.399
attack mode, much like Sandy's dog was recently. No anyway,

138
00:07:17.639 --> 00:07:21.040
Samuel is his name played by Harrison Dickinson, and he's

139
00:07:21.079 --> 00:07:23.439
not backward in coming forward. He knows what he wants

140
00:07:23.560 --> 00:07:27.079
and he goes for it, and he chooses the Rommy character,

141
00:07:27.079 --> 00:07:31.800
the Nicole Kidman character as his reluctant mentor. And I

142
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:33.800
say reluctant because she doesn't want to do it, and

143
00:07:34.120 --> 00:07:36.839
the tension in the air is palpable, so it's clear

144
00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:40.199
that physical intimacy between them just a matter of time.

145
00:07:41.040 --> 00:07:43.360
He's the one who will call the shots. He will

146
00:07:43.399 --> 00:07:46.639
turn up unexpectedly. She will succumb to the thrill and

147
00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:52.120
the danger, and Rommy has a decided kink, as does Samuel.

148
00:07:52.600 --> 00:07:56.519
She's though used to vanilla sex with her husband, that

149
00:07:56.560 --> 00:07:59.439
this is anything but that, and the age difference well

150
00:07:59.560 --> 00:08:00.120
no impacted.

151
00:08:01.040 --> 00:08:02.759
Both continue to push the boundaries.

152
00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:07.759
Unsurprisingly, matters will inevitably come to her head, and it's merely.

153
00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:08.639
A question of when.

154
00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:13.160
So, as Peter said, Baby Girl is about power and control,

155
00:08:13.279 --> 00:08:15.560
and it's also about women climbing the corporate ladder.

156
00:08:15.879 --> 00:08:18.240
And I'm not just talking here about Rommy.

157
00:08:18.439 --> 00:08:22.319
But also her personal assistant, Esme played by Sophie Wilde

158
00:08:22.879 --> 00:08:26.160
as May has long sought a promotion, and even though

159
00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:30.560
Rommy has an equal opportunity firm and praises Esme's work,

160
00:08:31.079 --> 00:08:36.679
Rommy has been prevarrogating about giving her that promotion. So look,

161
00:08:37.240 --> 00:08:41.080
I said, it's in the same sexually charged medieu as Fatal.

162
00:08:40.759 --> 00:08:44.080
Attraction that came out in nineteen eighty seven. And basic instinct.

163
00:08:44.399 --> 00:08:48.039
So the writer and director Helena Rain, who did instinct,

164
00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:52.159
draws us into this web of deceit, where the risk

165
00:08:52.200 --> 00:08:56.559
of exposure remains an ever present threat. A further sexual

166
00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:00.720
element in the story is Rommy's eldest daughter. Her name is Isabelle.

167
00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:04.320
The character name is Isabelle played by Esthera McGregor, and

168
00:09:04.600 --> 00:09:09.080
she's exploring her sexuality as well interest.

169
00:09:08.639 --> 00:09:09.720
In the same gender.

170
00:09:10.279 --> 00:09:13.799
So it's tense throughout Baby Girl. With the music and

171
00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:17.080
sound effects and already we've referenced sort of heavy breathing

172
00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:20.559
and moaning, they help to drive the narrative and Nicole

173
00:09:20.639 --> 00:09:23.960
Kidman really does throw caution to the wind another fearless performance.

174
00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:26.399
She gives herself over to the risque storyline.

175
00:09:26.919 --> 00:09:28.759
She really is a force to be reckoned with, whether

176
00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:33.159
wielding power or simply displaying vulnerability, which is what the

177
00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:34.080
role calls for.

178
00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:36.879
And look Harrison Dickinson.

179
00:09:38.279 --> 00:09:40.919
I can't say that he's entirely likable as the ball

180
00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:44.919
she lead, far from it, but that makes him eminently watchable,

181
00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:47.360
and again that's what the role calls for. And truth

182
00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:49.080
be told, he's the bad boy of the piece and

183
00:09:49.799 --> 00:09:51.799
I don't need to tell any listener. I don't think

184
00:09:51.799 --> 00:09:53.759
that this isn't the first time, nor will it be

185
00:09:53.759 --> 00:09:56.120
the last, that women are drawn to bad boys.

186
00:09:57.720 --> 00:10:00.799
Antonio benderis well, it's a largely thank less part of.

187
00:10:00.759 --> 00:10:04.559
The straight laced husband, and Sophie Wilde makes her mark

188
00:10:04.600 --> 00:10:08.200
as the executive assistant who learns how to step things up.

189
00:10:08.679 --> 00:10:11.879
So I mean yeah, and I kind of like Destain

190
00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:14.320
McGregor as well, quite a meaty role as the daughter

191
00:10:14.679 --> 00:10:16.559
unafraid of spreading her wings.

192
00:10:16.559 --> 00:10:19.120
So it certainly attracts attention Baby.

193
00:10:18.840 --> 00:10:22.000
Girl, and let's be honest, sex cells and it always has,

194
00:10:22.039 --> 00:10:25.519
always will. I can't say though, I was totally sold

195
00:10:25.559 --> 00:10:29.279
on what I thought was a convenient ending. I mean,

196
00:10:29.679 --> 00:10:33.960
I just thought, really, would this honestly happen in real life?

197
00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:35.120
I don't buy it.

198
00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:38.679
But regardless, no doubting that this is Nicole Kidman's vehicle

199
00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:42.200
and one where she deserves the accolade. So let's start

200
00:10:42.240 --> 00:10:44.759
off with you, Sandy, what did you think of Baby Girl?

201
00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:49.480
I hate to admit I really enjoyed it.

202
00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:51.240
I was on the edge of.

203
00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:54.799
My seat the entire time, and I was quite intrigued

204
00:10:54.879 --> 00:10:56.639
by the whole cougar theme.

205
00:10:56.600 --> 00:10:59.720
Which seems to be quite prevalent in films these days.

206
00:10:59.720 --> 00:11:02.480
It's little bit of a fashion for older women with

207
00:11:02.679 --> 00:11:05.759
younger men, And you kind of get.

208
00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:07.360
It in that setting.

209
00:11:07.399 --> 00:11:11.080
As you said, her marriage is, you know, it's quite stale.

210
00:11:11.320 --> 00:11:14.200
The sex she's having with a husband is pretty who hum.

211
00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:18.120
And this guy comes along and he's this ray of

212
00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.600
sunshine and spark of life. I mean, she has no

213
00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:22.879
idea when she gets involved with him that he's going

214
00:11:22.919 --> 00:11:27.440
to turn into this dominating character and make her do

215
00:11:27.559 --> 00:11:29.200
all sorts of crazy things.

216
00:11:29.240 --> 00:11:30.480
We didn't even have to make her.

217
00:11:30.519 --> 00:11:33.720
She was so compliant, she was willing to go along.

218
00:11:33.960 --> 00:11:38.320
And it really shows you that sex love with the

219
00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:40.320
question mark is a complete addiction.

220
00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:45.919
Nicole Kidman became addicted to this behavior and was.

221
00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:48.200
So vulnerable in that area.

222
00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:51.879
And could have lost everything, all the career that she

223
00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:57.080
built up so hugely, her family, her whole life could

224
00:11:57.080 --> 00:11:58.440
have been smashed.

225
00:11:59.080 --> 00:12:03.200
And I kind of get it. I don't say too

226
00:12:03.360 --> 00:12:05.679
much about that, but I kind of get it. So

227
00:12:05.879 --> 00:12:10.960
I did. I did really enjoy this and it was

228
00:12:11.080 --> 00:12:12.320
quite a refreshing take.

229
00:12:12.399 --> 00:12:19.080
I thought, there we go personal revelations here. What about you, Jack.

230
00:12:20.679 --> 00:12:23.919
Well, I want to disagree with you on everything Alex

231
00:12:24.279 --> 00:12:30.200
as usual, just the most fun good I would have liked.

232
00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:33.039
I would have liked to have known why right from

233
00:12:33.039 --> 00:12:37.679
the start Ronnie herself or with her husband didn't go

234
00:12:37.919 --> 00:12:42.200
to some form of counseling, because we wouldn't have had

235
00:12:42.200 --> 00:12:44.799
a movie. I know if it had worked it anyway,

236
00:12:45.200 --> 00:12:47.080
I would have liked to Jackie.

237
00:12:47.080 --> 00:12:49.000
The counseling may not have worked anyway.

238
00:12:49.120 --> 00:12:51.639
You can't just assume that if they had gone that

239
00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:53.720
it would magically fix their situation.

240
00:12:54.279 --> 00:12:57.200
No, no, but I would have liked some suggestion in

241
00:12:57.200 --> 00:13:00.600
the movie of why they didn't work or happened. But

242
00:13:00.679 --> 00:13:03.399
obviously her husband wasn't listening to her because she did

243
00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:07.480
attempt to draw him into this. It really is about

244
00:13:07.480 --> 00:13:12.120
the risk taking, and really that what is why I

245
00:13:12.159 --> 00:13:15.600
did like the ending Alex very much.

246
00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:20.559
I thought that it wouldn't No, I did, I did.

247
00:13:20.600 --> 00:13:23.639
Never, But I mean, if you relate everything to real life,

248
00:13:23.960 --> 00:13:24.559
this wouldn't.

249
00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:27.360
Sorry, I didn't realize it was a documentary.

250
00:13:27.399 --> 00:13:30.120
I thought it was a movie.

251
00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:32.559
You've got to buy what they're selling, don't you or me?

252
00:13:32.960 --> 00:13:35.279
And I didn't buy most of the movie. Okay, I

253
00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:37.559
really didn't buy most of the movie, but I liked

254
00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:41.759
the ending because a it showed that her husband finally did.

255
00:13:42.799 --> 00:13:44.960
Are we giving away the ending? How can I say

256
00:13:45.120 --> 00:13:46.960
why I like the ending If I can't.

257
00:13:47.360 --> 00:13:50.960
No, they were, You've got to be vague.

258
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:54.639
I like the I like the ending both in terms

259
00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:59.200
of her her family life and in terms of the

260
00:13:59.240 --> 00:14:03.399
final scene in her professional life where she's in her

261
00:14:03.440 --> 00:14:07.120
office and has a conversation with an older gentleman. Anyway,

262
00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:07.799
so I liked that.

263
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:12.399
I was for a moment. Let me at Sandy, did

264
00:14:12.399 --> 00:14:15.840
you buy the ending or not? Do you know what?

265
00:14:15.919 --> 00:14:17.279
I can't even remember the ending?

266
00:14:18.559 --> 00:14:19.159
Let me tell you.

267
00:14:20.799 --> 00:14:22.360
Amor obviously I know.

268
00:14:22.440 --> 00:14:26.080
What I do remember is that the marriage is resolved.

269
00:14:26.679 --> 00:14:32.759
Oh okay, guys, she's given it away. Okay, spoiler Anyway.

270
00:14:33.360 --> 00:14:35.360
One thing that I wanted to point out was how

271
00:14:35.440 --> 00:14:39.240
much the gist of this film, A Baby Girl reminded

272
00:14:39.320 --> 00:14:43.320
me of the film Last Summer, the French film about

273
00:14:43.360 --> 00:14:49.759
a similar aged woman who's a lawyer and has a

274
00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:55.720
wild affair with her husband's son, so her stepson, and

275
00:14:56.240 --> 00:15:01.200
this again is the same concept of the taking that

276
00:15:01.320 --> 00:15:07.159
gives the thrill that's missing from her life and her marriage.

277
00:15:07.759 --> 00:15:10.240
And I didn't like that film either. To me, again,

278
00:15:10.360 --> 00:15:13.440
that didn't ring true. I just you know, I just

279
00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:14.279
didn't ring true.

280
00:15:14.399 --> 00:15:18.720
Which films cer sex have you liked? Jackie Well?

281
00:15:19.879 --> 00:15:23.919
Sex is only one compliant these.

282
00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:27.279
Felt I understand that. Sorry I was being a bit cheeky,

283
00:15:27.320 --> 00:15:29.159
But what I'm really asking.

284
00:15:29.279 --> 00:15:33.399
I actually thought Nicole Kidman, you know, acted, performed, but

285
00:15:33.720 --> 00:15:38.879
was on camera was She's extraordinary. I've always liked her

286
00:15:38.919 --> 00:15:41.960
as an actress anyway, she hasn't always chosen the right films.

287
00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:48.360
I haven't always liked films, but kids, she should have.

288
00:15:49.279 --> 00:15:53.840
The one film she did consult me on was many

289
00:15:53.879 --> 00:15:55.919
years ago. I think it was probably about ten fifteen

290
00:15:55.960 --> 00:15:59.799
years ago was Rabbit Hole and I that's her in

291
00:16:00.120 --> 00:16:04.159
I viewed that's her best acting performance of all time

292
00:16:04.200 --> 00:16:06.399
and the best film she's ever appeared in. And I'll

293
00:16:06.519 --> 00:16:09.279
just that's one of my favorite films of all time. Actually,

294
00:16:09.639 --> 00:16:12.360
And while I'll always think she's a wonderful actress because

295
00:16:12.360 --> 00:16:13.919
of her role in that, but she was very good

296
00:16:13.919 --> 00:16:16.519
in this. I just didn't particularly like the story and

297
00:16:16.600 --> 00:16:20.399
I in particularly like the direction of it either choppy

298
00:16:20.600 --> 00:16:22.360
And did you think she was sexy?

299
00:16:25.960 --> 00:16:28.240
Do you think she was sexy? No?

300
00:16:28.440 --> 00:16:28.879
Not really?

301
00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:33.240
No, It's interesting people are really polarized by the way

302
00:16:33.320 --> 00:16:38.279
she looks. Some I think she looks fabulous, and some

303
00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:40.919
gentleman that I was speaking to going, Nah, she's a

304
00:16:40.960 --> 00:16:44.320
bean pole. She's up and down straight, she's not filuptuous,

305
00:16:44.120 --> 00:16:45.639
she's not good looking.

306
00:16:45.799 --> 00:16:48.200
She didn't she didn't even smile in the film. Her

307
00:16:48.320 --> 00:16:52.720
role wasn't as warm. She wasn't a warm hearted, smiling person.

308
00:16:52.759 --> 00:16:55.919
And I think that's a lot of Yeah.

309
00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:59.200
So no, I don't think she I mean Cindy.

310
00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:00.960
It depends the end, so that that question is it

311
00:17:01.000 --> 00:17:03.320
depends on your taste, I suppose. I mean, I think

312
00:17:03.360 --> 00:17:05.960
she looks extraordinary as well, So there you go.

313
00:17:06.720 --> 00:17:09.559
But it's the character she was playing, didn't he But

314
00:17:09.640 --> 00:17:10.720
I hum across as sexy?

315
00:17:11.279 --> 00:17:14.880
No, well, yeah, again I think she was sexy. But

316
00:17:14.920 --> 00:17:16.759
there you go. Greg, did you think she was sexy?

317
00:17:17.319 --> 00:17:22.039
Oh yeah, oh yeah. But here's the ahead with the

318
00:17:22.359 --> 00:17:29.480
let us leave and so not really getting excited, am I? No, No,

319
00:17:30.960 --> 00:17:34.279
Gully raised the temperature a little bit. Greg, tell me

320
00:17:34.319 --> 00:17:36.440
about what of the film? Please?

321
00:17:38.119 --> 00:17:41.160
You forgot to mention a film called Disclosure with Jimmy

322
00:17:41.200 --> 00:17:45.400
Moore and Mike Douglass about sexual harassment in the workplace

323
00:17:45.440 --> 00:17:47.400
as well, which I thought of when I was watching

324
00:17:47.480 --> 00:17:51.319
this film and changing power dynamics between Nicole Kidman's character

325
00:17:51.599 --> 00:17:55.680
and that of Harris Gipson. So yeah, but film those

326
00:17:56.119 --> 00:17:59.440
scenes of power, dynamic, sexuality, control and all that kind

327
00:17:59.440 --> 00:18:09.279
of stuff I didn't enjoyed as much as obviously Sandy did.

328
00:18:09.759 --> 00:18:12.359
I've thought the shifty natured of the relationshipship between the

329
00:18:12.400 --> 00:18:17.240
pair raised a lot of issues there, But for me,

330
00:18:17.680 --> 00:18:22.920
that faithful attraction that threatened their lives and reputation didn't really.

331
00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:23.319
Click for me.

332
00:18:24.720 --> 00:18:30.640
I thought it's a handsome looking production, glossy production values,

333
00:18:31.200 --> 00:18:35.000
nicely shot, I thought as well. And I thought Kidnam

334
00:18:35.119 --> 00:18:39.680
was quite strong as a tightly around Roman rommy ceo

335
00:18:39.880 --> 00:18:43.319
thriving in a male dominated world. Also bought some touches

336
00:18:43.359 --> 00:18:44.680
of vulnerability and uncertainty.

337
00:18:44.720 --> 00:18:45.599
Did role as well.

338
00:18:45.799 --> 00:18:48.240
I agree it's a brave and revealing performance in more

339
00:18:48.279 --> 00:18:48.960
ways than one.

340
00:18:49.720 --> 00:18:52.799
Reminded me a little bit of her work in Eyes

341
00:18:52.839 --> 00:18:53.400
Wide Shut.

342
00:18:53.519 --> 00:18:57.880
Actually yes, and the probing grammar, and I thought Diffinson

343
00:18:57.880 --> 00:19:01.240
brings a smoldering intensity to his role as a more

344
00:19:01.400 --> 00:19:02.359
enigmatic character.

345
00:19:02.599 --> 00:19:06.240
It didn't always convince me though, there you go, but

346
00:19:06.519 --> 00:19:09.279
I thought, with sorry Green, can you tell me why

347
00:19:09.319 --> 00:19:11.359
he didn't convince you? What? What? What? What sort of

348
00:19:11.359 --> 00:19:14.240
stood out? Yes, something that's a bit stand offish about him.

349
00:19:14.279 --> 00:19:16.200
I thought, just.

350
00:19:16.200 --> 00:19:18.440
Seeing maybe that was the character today, Maybe that was

351
00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:19.599
the character was trying to play.

352
00:19:19.799 --> 00:19:20.720
But it was a stand off.

353
00:19:20.759 --> 00:19:24.880
He probably wouldn't have structed someone like your whole kidman's character.

354
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:27.640
So I'm not sure that for me it didn't quite work.

355
00:19:27.839 --> 00:19:32.160
But okay, that's certainly provocative and challenging enough film there,

356
00:19:32.920 --> 00:19:37.039
and it's problematic, and it's issue towards sexuality, gender roles,

357
00:19:37.079 --> 00:19:39.920
and power and domination. But it's certainly better than those

358
00:19:40.440 --> 00:19:42.599
tufty shades of gray films.

359
00:19:43.599 --> 00:19:45.880
That would be That wouldn't be too difficult, though, I

360
00:19:45.920 --> 00:19:47.480
had it if they set the bar pretty low?

361
00:19:47.559 --> 00:19:50.559
Did they? I reckon that? Yeah? Was there a bar

362
00:19:50.640 --> 00:19:53.680
there at all? Is my question? Okay, so what about

363
00:19:53.720 --> 00:19:54.319
you now?

364
00:19:54.519 --> 00:19:57.599
Okay, pleader, I can only imagine as a film what

365
00:19:57.640 --> 00:19:58.319
you thought of this?

366
00:19:58.680 --> 00:20:01.160
That that's my preamble to you. Go for it, my friend.

367
00:20:02.079 --> 00:20:05.680
Okay, now, let me put some sanity into this discussion.

368
00:20:06.160 --> 00:20:09.000
Who wants sanity? Come on, that's right, that's what they

369
00:20:09.079 --> 00:20:09.880
said at Christmas.

370
00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:13.799
We don't want a sanity clause Anyway, if we talk

371
00:20:13.920 --> 00:20:17.839
about this film, Helena Rain is the filmmaker, and she

372
00:20:18.640 --> 00:20:21.359
previously had made a film called Body's Body's Bodies, and

373
00:20:21.400 --> 00:20:27.200
she loves exploring issues about women, their gender identity, and

374
00:20:27.279 --> 00:20:30.279
their role in life. And she's done this in Baby

375
00:20:30.359 --> 00:20:33.680
Girl to some extent. I don't think she's done it

376
00:20:33.680 --> 00:20:39.119
completely successfully because from the outset we meet Nicole Kidman

377
00:20:39.640 --> 00:20:45.559
as her sexual character, and what the film progresses to

378
00:20:45.680 --> 00:20:49.400
show is that she's attracted to this younger man to

379
00:20:50.519 --> 00:20:55.720
accept her sexual proclivities and as a counterpoint to her

380
00:20:55.799 --> 00:21:02.160
mundane marriage to Antonio Banderas. So that is sort of understandable.

381
00:21:02.559 --> 00:21:06.039
What is not understandable is that she's never really at

382
00:21:06.119 --> 00:21:10.680
risk of being exposed because she's in charge of the company.

383
00:21:10.920 --> 00:21:15.640
She heads it up. She's impervious, in other words, to

384
00:21:16.319 --> 00:21:19.400
what anyone might find out or say about her, which

385
00:21:19.480 --> 00:21:23.720
makes the narrative a little bit weaker for my liking.

386
00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:28.160
And Helena, as I mentioned, a Dutch filmmaker who's had

387
00:21:28.240 --> 00:21:32.240
a lot of acclaim in her films. She has tried

388
00:21:32.319 --> 00:21:38.000
to navigate this not entirely successfully. Also, Harris Dickinson's character

389
00:21:38.200 --> 00:21:42.319
is underdeveloped in so far as his character he goes

390
00:21:42.440 --> 00:21:45.319
along for the ride because he thinks he might get

391
00:21:45.359 --> 00:21:48.720
some power or traction from it, But really we don't

392
00:21:48.720 --> 00:21:51.759
know much about him, and that's one of the failings

393
00:21:51.799 --> 00:21:57.000
of the film, apart from perhaps the ending, Apart from

394
00:21:57.119 --> 00:22:00.799
the mother daughter relationship, which I felt could have been

395
00:22:00.880 --> 00:22:04.920
more strongly developed. Hence, baby girl, who is the baby

396
00:22:04.960 --> 00:22:07.720
girl in this film? Is it me pol or is

397
00:22:07.720 --> 00:22:08.319
it her daughter?

398
00:22:08.799 --> 00:22:11.160
So Peter, he calls her baby girl that yeah, you can.

399
00:22:11.279 --> 00:22:14.440
You can call somebody anything you want potentially yes, as

400
00:22:14.440 --> 00:22:17.319
a term of endearment. So now just stop for a

401
00:22:17.359 --> 00:22:19.920
second with regards to the ending. What did you not

402
00:22:20.079 --> 00:22:21.920
like about the ending? Did you not think it was

403
00:22:21.960 --> 00:22:24.680
really in the context of what was being talked about

404
00:22:24.799 --> 00:22:25.799
or what did you not like?

405
00:22:26.519 --> 00:22:29.920
I think it was a convenient, almost me too type

406
00:22:30.079 --> 00:22:33.920
ending it. But that's as far as I'll go with that.

407
00:22:34.359 --> 00:22:35.920
Okay, No, that's very well.

408
00:22:36.000 --> 00:22:40.039
We already we've already given everybody's script virtually throughout this conversation.

409
00:22:41.559 --> 00:22:44.440
All right, So given all of this, given that we

410
00:22:45.039 --> 00:22:47.240
started off by saying, well, some people are going to

411
00:22:47.240 --> 00:22:49.880
be attracted to it because of its subject matter, let's

412
00:22:49.880 --> 00:22:51.599
start with you, Peter, with a score out of ten.

413
00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:54.319
I'm presuming that you're not going to give it much

414
00:22:54.319 --> 00:22:55.039
more than a six.

415
00:22:55.119 --> 00:22:57.880
Go through your spot on. I gave it six out

416
00:22:57.920 --> 00:22:59.480
of ten, Jackie.

417
00:22:59.599 --> 00:23:03.720
I I suspect that if you give it a six,

418
00:23:03.799 --> 00:23:04.960
that would be a surprise.

419
00:23:05.119 --> 00:23:07.039
But that's about as far as you'll go, too.

420
00:23:08.640 --> 00:23:12.720
Yes, well, I did just want to mention since Peter

421
00:23:12.839 --> 00:23:15.720
reminded me Bodies, Body's Bodies by the director of twenty

422
00:23:15.759 --> 00:23:18.160
twenty two. I love that film. That was a bit

423
00:23:18.240 --> 00:23:21.759
kind of macarb and mad cap and crazy and fun

424
00:23:21.960 --> 00:23:24.799
and gory. I really like that. I was surprised I

425
00:23:24.920 --> 00:23:28.960
like that. So this film is as a follow up

426
00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:31.200
by the director, is a bit of a disappointment for me.

427
00:23:31.559 --> 00:23:34.640
But I will give my extra points on it for

428
00:23:34.759 --> 00:23:39.599
Antonio Benderos, who is terrific as the as Rommy's husband.

429
00:23:40.039 --> 00:23:41.640
I gave Baby Girl five out of ten.

430
00:23:41.960 --> 00:23:45.400
Yeah, that's right. I was expecting a low ball score. Okay,

431
00:23:45.559 --> 00:23:48.200
it's left. It's left to the real people who like

432
00:23:48.279 --> 00:23:53.079
this movie. Sandy and I reckon, Sandy, you and maybe

433
00:23:53.200 --> 00:23:55.480
maybe I'll give it even a higher mark than you.

434
00:23:55.519 --> 00:23:56.680
But go for it. What are you giving it?

435
00:23:57.039 --> 00:23:59.960
I would give it a seven, but I don't understand

436
00:24:00.079 --> 00:24:03.599
why Antonio Banderas was so unappealing. He's supposed to be

437
00:24:03.640 --> 00:24:06.440
a sex symbol in himself, and when you look at

438
00:24:06.440 --> 00:24:09.799
her with him in this marriage, you go, yeah, I

439
00:24:09.839 --> 00:24:13.440
get it. I get why you'd like this, this young

440
00:24:13.519 --> 00:24:16.160
man who's so full of confidence in Bravado.

441
00:24:16.240 --> 00:24:18.319
And I think it says a lot about.

442
00:24:18.240 --> 00:24:23.279
Modern sexual relationships today as opposed to the traditional stereotype

443
00:24:23.319 --> 00:24:26.440
of relationships in the past. And maybe we're all too

444
00:24:26.480 --> 00:24:30.000
old to be judging relationships like this, but you know,

445
00:24:30.119 --> 00:24:32.119
I'm always open to learning, so yeah, I would give

446
00:24:32.119 --> 00:24:34.079
it a seven. I thought her performance was good. I

447
00:24:34.200 --> 00:24:37.200
liked the young man's performance too. Banderas didn't have to

448
00:24:37.200 --> 00:24:41.440
do much, he was pretty sidelined. And I quite enjoyed

449
00:24:41.480 --> 00:24:45.400
the thought provoking nature of this film, which kind of

450
00:24:45.519 --> 00:24:49.599
questioned how the world has changed and where women do

451
00:24:49.759 --> 00:24:54.640
stand today, well, where both genders step all genders stand today.

452
00:24:55.039 --> 00:24:57.759
Yeah, look, you clearly got a lot out of this one,

453
00:24:57.799 --> 00:25:03.720
which it's interestingferent perspectives amongst all of us here, I thought,

454
00:25:03.839 --> 00:25:06.480
apart from the ending, which, as we've talked about enough,

455
00:25:07.240 --> 00:25:07.799
I thought it was good.

456
00:25:07.880 --> 00:25:09.440
Seven and a half out of ten for Baby Girl.

457
00:25:09.440 --> 00:25:12.200
It's MA rated runs one hundred and fourteen minutes, and

458
00:25:12.640 --> 00:25:14.839
go along and make your own judgment based on this.

459
00:25:14.960 --> 00:25:15.519
What about me?

460
00:25:16.039 --> 00:25:20.119
Oh, I'm sorry, Greg said anything fair? I want my share?

461
00:25:21.599 --> 00:25:25.599
Holy was a numb his face, Shanon Noel.

462
00:25:26.440 --> 00:25:29.640
Oh, golly, I would Jeffy on this one? Five out

463
00:25:29.640 --> 00:25:32.279
of ten for me. I'm mortified. I'm sorry, Greg, I

464
00:25:32.359 --> 00:25:33.160
totally forgot you.

465
00:25:33.400 --> 00:25:36.200
It's literoight, I'm used to being ignored and overlook, Alex,

466
00:25:36.319 --> 00:25:36.960
way about it?

467
00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:40.279
All right, Well, hang on, you can have your first

468
00:25:40.319 --> 00:25:43.440
say on being my Companion, which is the next movie

469
00:25:43.480 --> 00:25:44.119
we're talking about.

475
00:25:59.079 --> 00:26:01.759
So Companion the a of the movie m A, rated

476
00:26:01.839 --> 00:26:05.119
ninety seven minutes. And I'll start by saying, be careful

477
00:26:05.160 --> 00:26:07.759
what you wish for, because that really is one of

478
00:26:07.799 --> 00:26:12.920
the takeaways from the psychological thriller. And what I really

479
00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:16.160
liked about this movie is it goes in one direction

480
00:26:16.240 --> 00:26:18.960
and then all of a sudden goes click, and oh

481
00:26:19.039 --> 00:26:23.400
my golly, it really ramps up so very first, I

482
00:26:23.440 --> 00:26:26.000
don't know whether you any of us remember your first

483
00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:31.079
meeting with your partner. I certainly do, because here I'll

484
00:26:31.119 --> 00:26:32.920
do a little bit of seeing you have done a

485
00:26:32.920 --> 00:26:35.960
lot of the personal initially. In terms of talking about

486
00:26:36.039 --> 00:26:39.079
the previous movie, Sandy, I'll talk a little bit about companion.

487
00:26:39.640 --> 00:26:43.319
I remember my first meeting with my wife. It was

488
00:26:43.519 --> 00:26:45.119
incredibly memorable.

489
00:26:45.799 --> 00:26:47.480
You're sure there is a real meeting and not a

490
00:26:47.559 --> 00:26:50.000
figment of your programming it?

491
00:26:50.119 --> 00:26:52.079
Well, it could be my mind.

492
00:26:52.200 --> 00:26:53.000
Eh, don't know.

493
00:26:53.200 --> 00:26:57.759
Spoiler spoiler, Yeah, hang on, what is going on here?

494
00:26:57.799 --> 00:26:59.559
Guys? We do not want to give away too much

495
00:26:59.559 --> 00:27:03.079
about him? All right? And I assume your trailer knows

496
00:27:03.119 --> 00:27:05.240
what the movie's about.

497
00:27:05.640 --> 00:27:09.039
Well, yes, but somebody might go without saying the trailer

498
00:27:09.319 --> 00:27:10.400
erect correct.

499
00:27:10.519 --> 00:27:15.160
Anyway, I remember what my wife was wearing, how she looked,

500
00:27:15.480 --> 00:27:18.039
and the impact she had on me when we met

501
00:27:18.079 --> 00:27:18.920
all those years ago.

502
00:27:19.039 --> 00:27:20.400
It was phenomenal.

503
00:27:20.839 --> 00:27:22.519
So don't you make a movie about it?

504
00:27:24.000 --> 00:27:24.319
Well?

505
00:27:24.720 --> 00:27:27.359
Yeah, because I'm a reviewer not a movie maker, so

506
00:27:27.440 --> 00:27:28.119
you can make it.

507
00:27:28.480 --> 00:27:29.759
You'll give me your take on it.

508
00:27:30.240 --> 00:27:33.599
But who would play you in the movie? Would it

509
00:27:33.640 --> 00:27:34.599
be Tom Cruise.

510
00:27:35.880 --> 00:27:37.000
No, it's interesting.

511
00:27:37.079 --> 00:27:40.480
I some people have equated me to another actor.

512
00:27:41.480 --> 00:27:46.039
His first name is Ryan. What's his surname? God's just no. No,

513
00:27:46.359 --> 00:27:49.599
it was a oh great, my mobile phone is ringing?

514
00:27:49.640 --> 00:27:51.920
What we're doing? Don't people know not to disturb me

515
00:27:51.960 --> 00:27:53.920
in this context. I don't know what to do here.

516
00:27:54.079 --> 00:27:58.920
How do I switch? Turn it off? Turn it off, folks,

517
00:27:59.000 --> 00:28:00.839
I don't know. I'm trying to it often it doesn't

518
00:28:00.880 --> 00:28:02.640
turn off. I'm visiting a.

519
00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:04.880
Lot of technical problems today.

520
00:28:05.759 --> 00:28:07.960
You know what it is. I mustn't have put it

521
00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:10.920
on silence, so I bring them back. So I apologize

522
00:28:10.920 --> 00:28:14.680
for everybody listening. This is chaos, okay. The reason I'm

523
00:28:14.680 --> 00:28:15.400
mentioning all of this.

524
00:28:15.519 --> 00:28:17.200
And I've got to say that my wife was in

525
00:28:17.240 --> 00:28:20.759
a jumpsuit with a purple shell in the middle of

526
00:28:20.759 --> 00:28:23.240
her mid riff and her eyes and makeup.

527
00:28:23.279 --> 00:28:29.200
Oh my golly. Anyway, this big I was turning into

528
00:28:29.200 --> 00:28:35.599
a relationship show. And it's very strange. It is. Look,

529
00:28:35.960 --> 00:28:39.079
that's the beauty of live radio. Decidedly awkward.

530
00:28:39.119 --> 00:28:43.599
First meeting at the supermarket for the star of this one,

531
00:28:43.720 --> 00:28:47.599
a lady called Iris played by Sophie Thatcher. I wonder

532
00:28:47.599 --> 00:28:54.039
whether she's related to Margaret anyway? He is she related

533
00:28:54.079 --> 00:29:00.960
to the former British prime minister, Why, I'm probably not anyway.

534
00:29:01.839 --> 00:29:06.720
Her name's IRA's and she meets Josh played by Jack Quaid, who, yes,

535
00:29:06.920 --> 00:29:08.559
is Dennis Quaid's son, isn't he?

536
00:29:08.920 --> 00:29:13.559
Yes? Nisquayed mcryan, Yes, So there you go.

537
00:29:13.680 --> 00:29:16.599
So why wouldn't Sophie Thatcher be related to Margaret? I'd

538
00:29:16.640 --> 00:29:17.480
say ask again?

539
00:29:17.799 --> 00:29:22.359
Anyway? The connection in this supermarket is palpable. It's a

540
00:29:22.440 --> 00:29:24.160
question of which child did they meet in the meatile?

541
00:29:24.200 --> 00:29:24.640
Did they meant it?

542
00:29:24.759 --> 00:29:24.799
No?

543
00:29:25.039 --> 00:29:28.880
Anyway? True aile, they did meet. Yes, they went fruit

544
00:29:28.920 --> 00:29:29.680
loops for each other.

545
00:29:30.039 --> 00:29:30.519
Oranges?

546
00:29:30.680 --> 00:29:30.920
Was that?

547
00:29:31.839 --> 00:29:34.960
Yeah? So it was really?

548
00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:35.160
What?

549
00:29:35.799 --> 00:29:37.480
So it's matching oranges with apples?

550
00:29:37.519 --> 00:29:41.319
Anyway, IRA's falls hard for Josh and they become a couple.

551
00:29:41.359 --> 00:29:44.720
And sometime later they take a trip to visit Josh's

552
00:29:44.720 --> 00:29:47.079
friends in this beautiful.

553
00:29:46.480 --> 00:29:50.160
Home in remote bush land by the sea. Villain, let's quick,

554
00:29:50.200 --> 00:29:51.160
the interrupt Alex.

555
00:29:51.319 --> 00:29:53.880
Sophie Thatcher is actually American. Well she's probably why she's

556
00:29:53.880 --> 00:29:55.240
not related to mother Teucher.

557
00:29:55.960 --> 00:29:58.519
There you go, I got it. I was totally screwed up.

558
00:29:58.680 --> 00:30:02.039
No one to I've got a second apology for you today, Greg.

559
00:30:02.400 --> 00:30:05.359
So having said all of that, Iris is very very

560
00:30:05.400 --> 00:30:09.279
nervous about saying and doing the wrong things around Josh's friends,

561
00:30:09.319 --> 00:30:10.799
but he.

562
00:30:10.680 --> 00:30:13.200
Basically says, don't worry about it. Everything, I'll be fine.

563
00:30:13.839 --> 00:30:17.759
Iris is particularly concerned about a female friend of Josh

564
00:30:17.799 --> 00:30:23.240
called Cat played by Meghan Suri, who Iris basically believe.

565
00:30:23.519 --> 00:30:27.240
She believes that that Cat doesn't like her, and this

566
00:30:27.440 --> 00:30:31.559
luxurious home, well, it turns out to be that of Cat.

567
00:30:32.079 --> 00:30:34.640
That friend I've just spoken about. She's got a.

568
00:30:34.640 --> 00:30:38.440
Russian gangster boyfriend called Serge and he's the one who

569
00:30:38.519 --> 00:30:43.359
owns this house. Serge played by an almost unrecognizable rupert friend.

570
00:30:44.039 --> 00:30:48.000
And also there is a gay couple called Ellie and Patrick,

571
00:30:48.519 --> 00:30:51.680
and like Iris and Josh, they were besotted when their

572
00:30:51.720 --> 00:30:52.880
eyes first met.

573
00:30:53.240 --> 00:30:55.359
In rather absurd circumstances.

574
00:30:55.400 --> 00:30:59.000
So yeah, first meetings, it's all about anyway, all seems

575
00:30:59.039 --> 00:31:04.359
to be in order. SERGEI overreaches badly and thereafter they'll

576
00:31:04.359 --> 00:31:07.799
be hell to pay. And when thinking about this movie,

577
00:31:08.559 --> 00:31:11.519
the first thing I thought of, the expression first impressions

578
00:31:11.519 --> 00:31:13.480
can be misleading immediately.

579
00:31:13.039 --> 00:31:13.680
Comes to mind.

580
00:31:13.880 --> 00:31:15.559
And not to put too fine a point on it,

581
00:31:15.799 --> 00:31:20.039
blood will be spilt more than once. The title comes

582
00:31:20.079 --> 00:31:24.759
from what we're dealing with here, namely lifelike companion robots,

583
00:31:25.359 --> 00:31:28.119
so you know this is a guilty pleasure. I really

584
00:31:28.200 --> 00:31:31.519
enjoyed the wild ride became more intense and far fetched

585
00:31:31.559 --> 00:31:34.880
as it progressed, and one of the golden rules of

586
00:31:34.960 --> 00:31:37.440
robotics is in this movie is.

587
00:31:37.359 --> 00:31:39.000
That humanoids can't lie.

588
00:31:40.119 --> 00:31:42.400
And dare I say, A brave new world awaits The

589
00:31:42.440 --> 00:31:45.359
writer directors Drew Hancock. He cut his teeth on television

590
00:31:45.720 --> 00:31:48.960
and he clearly has a vivid imagination, and an advantage

591
00:31:48.960 --> 00:31:51.119
of the script is that you really never know where

592
00:31:51.680 --> 00:31:55.519
the narrative is heading. There's shocks and surprises of plenty,

593
00:31:55.839 --> 00:32:00.440
and Factor transitions nicely from needy and compliant to rather

594
00:32:00.480 --> 00:32:05.440
resourceful and pragmatic, and Quaid shows Josh's ugly side friend.

595
00:32:06.000 --> 00:32:07.720
Well he invokes fear as Sugo.

596
00:32:07.799 --> 00:32:11.279
He really does, and I thought the two boys were

597
00:32:11.359 --> 00:32:13.359
quite a polished and playful.

598
00:32:13.079 --> 00:32:14.359
So I appreciate it.

599
00:32:14.440 --> 00:32:18.359
Also, there's a highway cop here played by Mark Manetchaka,

600
00:32:18.480 --> 00:32:21.000
and I thought he was a sort of cameo role,

601
00:32:21.039 --> 00:32:22.920
but it was memorable.

602
00:32:22.640 --> 00:32:26.759
So yeah. Performances were good, while the dangers.

603
00:32:26.359 --> 00:32:29.119
Of Ali and robots taking over are certainly apparent in

604
00:32:29.160 --> 00:32:32.200
this movie. What's also on show here is greed, And

605
00:32:32.640 --> 00:32:36.319
I'm here to tell you that, despite Gordon Gecko's creed

606
00:32:36.359 --> 00:32:40.519
in Wall Street, greed ain't good. Right, Let's be honest

607
00:32:40.519 --> 00:32:42.839
in terms of this movie. Still there's a lot of

608
00:32:42.880 --> 00:32:44.559
the carb Thunderby had in Companion.

609
00:32:44.599 --> 00:32:45.200
Isn't there greed?

610
00:32:45.880 --> 00:32:46.200
There is?

611
00:32:46.240 --> 00:32:51.279
Indeed here You mentioned the fact that a robots there. Now,

612
00:32:51.559 --> 00:32:54.359
the show reminded me a lot of Westworld, the model

613
00:32:54.400 --> 00:32:57.319
quite in film from nineteen seventy three where robot goes, hey,

614
00:32:57.319 --> 00:33:00.039
why breaks down and it's on a killing stree. So

615
00:33:00.640 --> 00:33:02.559
that's where I thought. That's what first one I thought

616
00:33:02.599 --> 00:33:04.440
of I was watching this one. But it is a

617
00:33:04.440 --> 00:33:07.480
lot of fun. It keeps subverting your expectations. You never

618
00:33:07.480 --> 00:33:10.759
saw where it's going. It's always sort of changing there.

619
00:33:10.799 --> 00:33:12.799
I thought the performances were good as well.

620
00:33:12.799 --> 00:33:13.039
Shot.

621
00:33:13.039 --> 00:33:15.000
There's a lot of humor in here, and for such

622
00:33:15.000 --> 00:33:17.279
a small cast there is actually a high body count.

623
00:33:18.039 --> 00:33:21.880
Yes, well, movies like this are like that.

624
00:33:21.920 --> 00:33:25.079
But isn't it interesting how it starts off as decidedly

625
00:33:25.119 --> 00:33:28.319
one thing and ends up as something entirely different?

626
00:33:28.480 --> 00:33:29.160
But it's done.

627
00:33:29.640 --> 00:33:32.319
The note I suppose the notes are associated with it

628
00:33:32.400 --> 00:33:36.559
are winners as far as I'm concerned, Greg, Yep, yeah.

629
00:33:36.000 --> 00:33:39.119
Yeah, I like the fact that I had a potted

630
00:33:39.160 --> 00:33:40.920
the depiction of that gay couple for it a while

631
00:33:40.960 --> 00:33:41.640
there as well.

632
00:33:42.279 --> 00:33:44.759
Yes, well, I mean, which is unusually in a mainstream

633
00:33:44.759 --> 00:33:45.440
Hollywood film.

634
00:33:45.759 --> 00:33:49.119
Well, Eli or Ellie played by Harvey Guillel and Patrick

635
00:33:49.160 --> 00:33:53.240
by Lucas Gage. So yeah, as I said, both of them,

636
00:33:53.559 --> 00:33:56.480
I mean, Gauge is quite polished as Patrick, and Glen

637
00:33:56.759 --> 00:33:58.599
is playful as Eli or Ellie.

638
00:33:58.680 --> 00:34:01.440
I'm not sure. I can't remember I had their own

639
00:34:01.920 --> 00:34:03.759
cute make cute sorry as.

640
00:34:03.680 --> 00:34:07.160
Well, don't they they do, indeed very much. So, Peter,

641
00:34:07.839 --> 00:34:09.920
did you did you like Companion?

642
00:34:10.519 --> 00:34:15.960
Not particularly? I've seen a number of of course, why

643
00:34:16.000 --> 00:34:17.920
would you? Why we Peter.

644
00:34:18.480 --> 00:34:23.719
AI robot related films x Mashner, The trouble was Being Born,

645
00:34:24.599 --> 00:34:27.000
et cetera. There are a number of good films, and

646
00:34:27.639 --> 00:34:29.800
this one doesn't quite work for me. In fact, it

647
00:34:29.880 --> 00:34:33.320
felt for me like it was an extended student film

648
00:34:33.400 --> 00:34:37.039
that needed a few more script drafts because it sacrificed

649
00:34:37.400 --> 00:34:43.639
the AI component for the revenge crime body count component,

650
00:34:44.239 --> 00:34:48.199
which the film then settles into I really felt that

651
00:34:48.239 --> 00:34:53.280
the characters were underdefined. I felt the storyline was a

652
00:34:53.320 --> 00:34:58.559
big tweet at the start and then became rather pointless

653
00:34:58.840 --> 00:35:02.719
as it progressed in terms of the revenge aspect.

654
00:35:03.159 --> 00:35:05.840
I was quite disappointed by it. I expected this to

655
00:35:06.119 --> 00:35:09.239
be a much stronger film. So hang on.

656
00:35:09.880 --> 00:35:14.400
When they didn't you like the romantic meetings between the

657
00:35:14.440 --> 00:35:15.360
parties at the start?

658
00:35:15.639 --> 00:35:16.480
You didn't like it at.

659
00:35:16.440 --> 00:35:22.159
All, contrived and sacrificed for what the film really was about.

660
00:35:22.239 --> 00:35:25.599
Later on, come on, love and sex, you know, go

661
00:35:25.679 --> 00:35:27.679
for it. This is what this whole program.

662
00:35:27.360 --> 00:35:30.880
Is all about. Loved sex on film. See to be

663
00:35:30.880 --> 00:35:34.000
a scene running through this program today exactly.

664
00:35:34.280 --> 00:35:36.960
Maybe we got to rename it for this particular. Well

665
00:35:37.079 --> 00:35:39.639
do we put it in sort of a black paper

666
00:35:39.639 --> 00:35:40.360
bag or something?

667
00:35:40.559 --> 00:35:44.480
Six lines and videotape? How's that? Very good? Thank you, Greg?

668
00:35:44.559 --> 00:35:46.199
I take it up.

669
00:35:46.239 --> 00:35:48.559
My people will take it up with your people. Okay,

670
00:35:48.719 --> 00:35:54.360
So what about you, Jackie? I surely you like this one.

671
00:35:54.639 --> 00:35:55.840
I didn't like it.

672
00:35:55.960 --> 00:35:58.599
I loved it good stuf.

673
00:35:58.920 --> 00:36:01.239
This is like, did not expect to like it. I

674
00:36:01.320 --> 00:36:03.599
actually don't like sci fi films, and I was a

675
00:36:03.599 --> 00:36:06.800
bit u when I saw the photo on the poster.

676
00:36:07.480 --> 00:36:11.559
But it's such a romp it really is. It's about

677
00:36:11.679 --> 00:36:18.239
fun entertainment, Peter. It's not necessarily about it. And I

678
00:36:18.280 --> 00:36:21.079
didn't like the start because I was thinking, Oh, this

679
00:36:21.119 --> 00:36:24.920
is a kind of a dull rom com sort of thing.

680
00:36:25.480 --> 00:36:28.719
And then it starts the twists, and it's a twisty tail,

681
00:36:28.800 --> 00:36:31.159
and it just keeps going and it builds up into

682
00:36:31.199 --> 00:36:36.719
this kind of gory horror sci fi, keeps the romance going,

683
00:36:36.920 --> 00:36:39.360
and it's a thriller, and it's sort of got a

684
00:36:39.360 --> 00:36:41.599
bit of everything. Yes, it throws everything in there, and

685
00:36:41.639 --> 00:36:44.559
I thought that was good fun and I really enjoyed that.

686
00:36:44.719 --> 00:36:48.119
It's a little bit ridiculous at times that so you

687
00:36:48.159 --> 00:36:51.039
could have a bit of a laugh. And yet I

688
00:36:51.119 --> 00:36:54.320
really liked all of the characters. Okay, maybe they weren't

689
00:36:54.360 --> 00:36:57.400
all fully developed, but as we got to know them,

690
00:36:57.480 --> 00:37:00.840
we sort of worked out where their place was in

691
00:37:01.039 --> 00:37:04.920
the film. And I was quite invested in all of them.

692
00:37:05.000 --> 00:37:10.280
I'm human and not and so the story was clever.

693
00:37:10.360 --> 00:37:13.000
The story was fun. I loved a home in the woods.

694
00:37:13.079 --> 00:37:19.360
It was a good setting and a beautiful architecture there

695
00:37:19.519 --> 00:37:23.039
for me to enjoy. And I also liked as you

696
00:37:23.119 --> 00:37:28.159
mentioned that one scene with the highway policeman, that was

697
00:37:28.320 --> 00:37:32.159
probably my favorite scene in the film in German by

698
00:37:32.199 --> 00:37:34.599
the side of the road, because there was so much

699
00:37:34.639 --> 00:37:36.920
going on in the undercurrent there and the looks in

700
00:37:36.960 --> 00:37:40.360
the faces and the contengulish and that it was just

701
00:37:40.719 --> 00:37:45.320
a clever dialogue and a really snappy, fun, little memorable

702
00:37:46.360 --> 00:37:48.400
episode in the film. Companion.

703
00:37:48.800 --> 00:37:51.159
You know something, Jagie, it's funny you're mentioning this.

704
00:37:51.719 --> 00:37:53.719
I reckon there should be an award for the best

705
00:37:53.719 --> 00:37:57.440
scene of the year, right, I've never I'm not aware

706
00:37:57.480 --> 00:37:58.800
that there is one, but I mean.

707
00:37:58.840 --> 00:38:00.239
See, how would you judge that?

708
00:38:00.519 --> 00:38:03.239
Well, I think it'll be damn hard, But wouldn't it

709
00:38:03.280 --> 00:38:04.360
be that'd be a lot of fun.

710
00:38:04.480 --> 00:38:05.719
I reckon you could get.

711
00:38:05.840 --> 00:38:09.559
But so times the best scene Alex will be because

712
00:38:09.719 --> 00:38:13.440
of what's gone on before. So the scene in itself,

713
00:38:14.440 --> 00:38:18.320
you know, might not work unless you know what's built

714
00:38:18.719 --> 00:38:19.079
up to it.

715
00:38:19.559 --> 00:38:22.079
Why don't you add another another Oscar for best scene

716
00:38:22.079 --> 00:38:24.000
of the year. I mean, let's do it.

717
00:38:24.039 --> 00:38:26.400
Then, hold on, let's do it for them, you know.

718
00:38:26.800 --> 00:38:30.119
And there needs to be ten, up to ten categories

719
00:38:30.159 --> 00:38:32.519
of best Director. I still say, if you've got ten

720
00:38:32.559 --> 00:38:36.199
categories of best film. Do they direct themselves? That's been

721
00:38:36.199 --> 00:38:39.239
my bug bear, Sandy did did you see it?

722
00:38:39.719 --> 00:38:39.880
Oh?

723
00:38:39.920 --> 00:38:41.159
You didn't say? Okay, no worries you.

724
00:38:41.880 --> 00:38:43.920
By the sounds of all of you talking about it,

725
00:38:43.960 --> 00:38:46.639
apart from you, Jackie, I'm not sorry.

726
00:38:47.440 --> 00:38:48.719
Oh this guy, I.

727
00:38:48.639 --> 00:38:51.719
Can't help it if the boys aren't enthusiastic.

728
00:38:51.199 --> 00:38:55.760
Exactly, and I like it. It's only Peter, mister grumbleguts

729
00:38:56.000 --> 00:39:01.360
la Peter, that's entertainment. It's entertainment exactly, all right, go on,

730
00:39:01.519 --> 00:39:04.599
layball it for me, Pete, okay, four out of ten

731
00:39:04.679 --> 00:39:13.679
from me to the g that is that's Peter. The

732
00:39:13.679 --> 00:39:17.159
greench is your name? From here on. Wow, Companion's a

733
00:39:17.360 --> 00:39:22.079
ninety seven minutes. Okay, Greg, go for it. Seven mm hmmm, Jackie,

734
00:39:22.840 --> 00:39:23.719
I was going to tell.

735
00:39:23.559 --> 00:39:28.360
You about my first meeting. Oh, okay, I partner, Piper.

736
00:39:29.320 --> 00:39:30.800
This is a dog. We're not We're not.

737
00:39:30.880 --> 00:39:35.320
Yes, that's all right, okay, Companion. I gave Companion's out.

738
00:39:35.199 --> 00:39:39.480
Of ten are we talking about animal husbandry now right?

739
00:39:40.719 --> 00:39:41.239
Okay?

740
00:39:41.960 --> 00:39:46.239
Out of ten? Lovely, good, fun, entertaining and okay, maybe

741
00:39:46.519 --> 00:39:49.920
some people are a bit old for it. No, I

742
00:39:49.920 --> 00:39:53.159
shouldn't say that. I shouldn't say that, but I what

743
00:39:53.159 --> 00:39:55.199
what one thing that did come across for me is

744
00:39:55.239 --> 00:39:58.360
it is a very fresh, young, modern film. But that,

745
00:39:58.639 --> 00:40:01.360
you know, anybody can enjoy that. I was just being cheeky, then.

746
00:40:01.360 --> 00:40:01.840
No, you were.

747
00:40:01.960 --> 00:40:04.320
And I've got to say, it's kind of interesting. We're

748
00:40:04.320 --> 00:40:07.559
all around the same age, folks. In case you thought

749
00:40:07.599 --> 00:40:09.199
that was a real dig, we all.

750
00:40:09.039 --> 00:40:10.159
Are around the same age.

751
00:40:10.239 --> 00:40:13.239
Anyway, Let's let's let's go on to the next movie,

752
00:40:14.440 --> 00:40:15.360
like seven and a half.

753
00:40:15.400 --> 00:40:18.159
Greg, Great, so you're forgetting a lot today.

754
00:40:18.559 --> 00:40:21.320
Now that's because it reminds him of his wife.

755
00:40:21.760 --> 00:40:25.519
Well, no, then it would then it would be a ten, right,

756
00:40:25.920 --> 00:40:29.920
So having said that, unfortunately she's never listened, so my

757
00:40:30.039 --> 00:40:31.679
references are totally lost.

758
00:40:32.000 --> 00:40:33.719
Have he said all of that?

759
00:40:34.039 --> 00:40:37.639
Let's let's talk about a really important movie called September five,

760
00:40:38.159 --> 00:40:41.400
which is ninety five minutes rateed M and.

761
00:40:41.599 --> 00:40:42.639
Boy, this is a good film.

762
00:40:42.679 --> 00:40:46.920
I mean really, I'm surprised that this didn't pick up

763
00:40:47.239 --> 00:40:50.519
so that this, to me, should have been given quite

764
00:40:50.519 --> 00:40:53.760
a few Oscar nominations. But anyway, it was the day

765
00:40:54.079 --> 00:40:57.400
live sports coverage became live news coverage of the most

766
00:40:57.800 --> 00:41:02.159
heenous kind. And we're talking September five, nineteen seventy two,

767
00:41:02.679 --> 00:41:05.760
and it's at the athlete's village in Munich at the

768
00:41:05.840 --> 00:41:09.920
twentieth Summer Olympics, and terrorists, for those people who are

769
00:41:09.920 --> 00:41:14.280
around would remember this, affiliated with this milletant organization known

770
00:41:14.320 --> 00:41:19.960
as Black September, captured and killed eleven Israeli athletes and coaches.

771
00:41:20.360 --> 00:41:23.599
And this movie tells the story from the perspective of

772
00:41:23.639 --> 00:41:26.639
the American television network that was covering the games that

773
00:41:26.840 --> 00:41:30.800
being ABC in the United States. And I've got to

774
00:41:30.840 --> 00:41:34.039
say these Olympic Games that we're talking about were the

775
00:41:34.079 --> 00:41:37.760
first to be broadcast live around the world via satellite.

776
00:41:38.440 --> 00:41:41.840
So you've got Jeffrey Mason played by John mcgaro, a

777
00:41:41.840 --> 00:41:45.119
young ambitious producer and he's keen to prove himself to

778
00:41:45.159 --> 00:41:49.559
his mentor Marvin Bader played by Ben Chaplin, and their boss,

779
00:41:49.880 --> 00:41:53.039
who happens to be a legendary television executive called Rune

780
00:41:53.199 --> 00:41:56.599
art Ledge played by Peter Sarsgard or not with a

781
00:41:56.679 --> 00:42:01.920
t r ledge rather than art Ledge, Rune art ar Ledge. Mason,

782
00:42:02.000 --> 00:42:07.280
this young ambitious producer, is behind the control panel when

783
00:42:07.400 --> 00:42:11.320
shots that shook the globe bring out and suddenly it's

784
00:42:11.360 --> 00:42:15.039
all hands on deck as Sarsgard fights for the sports

785
00:42:15.159 --> 00:42:18.079
arm of the network, which is on the ground in Munich,

786
00:42:18.320 --> 00:42:21.719
to retain control of the unfolding story because usual practice

787
00:42:21.760 --> 00:42:25.039
would have been to immediately divert to news and they

788
00:42:25.039 --> 00:42:27.920
would have covered it remotely from the United States. So

789
00:42:28.039 --> 00:42:31.039
with the help of a German interpreter called Marianne Gebhard

790
00:42:31.079 --> 00:42:35.119
played by Leoni Benesh Mason and the crews scramble to

791
00:42:35.159 --> 00:42:38.400
bring the world the unfolding events, and there's no shortage

792
00:42:38.400 --> 00:42:42.800
of internal and external tension as live pictures capture hooded

793
00:42:42.840 --> 00:42:46.599
guerrillas on a hotel balcony and hostages.

794
00:42:46.039 --> 00:42:49.199
In extreme peril. And I mean, it brought it all back,

795
00:42:49.519 --> 00:42:50.519
and I found.

796
00:42:50.239 --> 00:42:54.840
It really affecting, really distressing to sit through this. I

797
00:42:54.920 --> 00:42:58.400
was quite emotional, and it's been remarkably crafted. The production

798
00:42:58.519 --> 00:43:02.039
values in this movie are nominal. It mixes broadcast vision

799
00:43:02.039 --> 00:43:04.519
from the time with a dramatization of the events that

800
00:43:04.559 --> 00:43:05.079
went down.

801
00:43:05.519 --> 00:43:06.400
The looks on.

802
00:43:06.360 --> 00:43:09.960
The faces of the key players say it all. They're interchanges.

803
00:43:10.039 --> 00:43:14.559
What they do feels real, really impressive, And bear in mind,

804
00:43:14.639 --> 00:43:17.639
this is unlike anything that the TV Sports team had

805
00:43:17.639 --> 00:43:21.280
previously confronted. And one of the key question the questions

806
00:43:21.280 --> 00:43:24.239
it's posed is just how far should they go in

807
00:43:24.320 --> 00:43:25.119
telling the story?

808
00:43:25.320 --> 00:43:27.239
What do they actually show on television?

809
00:43:27.400 --> 00:43:31.400
What don't they Then there's the politics of the situation

810
00:43:31.719 --> 00:43:35.880
and the behind the scenes political byplay. So there's a

811
00:43:35.920 --> 00:43:38.719
lot going on here and it's a movie that I

812
00:43:38.760 --> 00:43:41.199
would highly commend. I think there's going to be a

813
00:43:41.239 --> 00:43:45.400
lot of people who appreciate what's pictured here as Mason,

814
00:43:45.880 --> 00:43:49.880
John mcgaro comes across as dynamic and competent. Ben Chaplin

815
00:43:49.920 --> 00:43:53.320
as Beta really keen to ensure that they're safe, on

816
00:43:53.400 --> 00:43:56.800
that they are safe, on sorry, that they are on

817
00:43:57.039 --> 00:44:01.960
safe grounds, and Sarsgard shows leadership as Alge, and Benish

818
00:44:02.199 --> 00:44:06.320
adds character and depth as the German interpreter, highly attuned,

819
00:44:06.360 --> 00:44:09.079
I might say, to the country's ignominious past.

820
00:44:09.119 --> 00:44:11.000
I'm talking about the Holocaust, and for.

821
00:44:10.960 --> 00:44:13.639
Those who've lived through the horror of what unfolded at

822
00:44:13.679 --> 00:44:17.119
the time, as with me, I dare say the film

823
00:44:17.119 --> 00:44:19.559
will bring it all back and for others who didn't

824
00:44:20.119 --> 00:44:23.039
or weren't even aware of this stain on the Olympics

825
00:44:23.159 --> 00:44:24.400
and on common decency.

826
00:44:24.960 --> 00:44:26.079
It's a real eye opener.

827
00:44:26.199 --> 00:44:29.159
And the co writer with Maurice Binder and Alex David

828
00:44:29.320 --> 00:44:33.000
and the director Tim Felbaum. I think it's to be

829
00:44:33.079 --> 00:44:36.960
highly commended for his focus on authenticity, which extends to

830
00:44:37.239 --> 00:44:40.559
the actual broadcasting equipment, the original broadcast equipment.

831
00:44:40.599 --> 00:44:41.480
Amazing stuff.

832
00:44:42.039 --> 00:44:45.679
And whilst it's far from an easy watch, September five

833
00:44:45.760 --> 00:44:50.239
is undeniably ritty and gripping and as far as I'm concerned,

834
00:44:50.280 --> 00:44:53.000
it so must see. What did you think of it, Peter?

835
00:44:54.000 --> 00:44:54.639
I agree with you.

836
00:44:54.719 --> 00:44:58.599
It's an excellent film, almost like a docu drama recreating

837
00:44:58.639 --> 00:45:01.039
the events of the time, and I know it was

838
00:45:01.079 --> 00:45:04.400
shot at the Bavarian Film Studios in Munich to give

839
00:45:04.440 --> 00:45:09.440
it to that authenticity. Yes, it's an excellent casting for

840
00:45:09.880 --> 00:45:13.800
everyone involved. But the whole notion of the ethics and

841
00:45:13.880 --> 00:45:18.559
the politics and the historical perspective that the Germans were

842
00:45:18.719 --> 00:45:21.199
careful not to deal with because they didn't want to

843
00:45:21.239 --> 00:45:29.239
be shown as interrogating or as providing sort of negative

844
00:45:29.280 --> 00:45:33.679
sort of coverage for the Olympics. It's really fascinating stuff

845
00:45:33.880 --> 00:45:35.960
and as I said, the ethics and power play are

846
00:45:36.039 --> 00:45:41.119
really beautifully done. The only Benisch who's that plays the translator.

847
00:45:41.480 --> 00:45:45.039
I'm sure people recognize her from the teacher's lounge. The

848
00:45:46.760 --> 00:45:50.679
excellent German film. So there is so much to like

849
00:45:50.800 --> 00:45:56.039
and admire about the recreation of the events of this film,

850
00:45:56.119 --> 00:45:59.119
and a lot to think about. Tim Felbaum, who is

851
00:45:59.159 --> 00:46:03.960
the Swiss German and write director of this film, who's

852
00:46:04.000 --> 00:46:08.599
made some other terrific films, has really portrayed the events

853
00:46:08.679 --> 00:46:12.159
of that era extremely well, and it gives you a

854
00:46:12.239 --> 00:46:16.639
real insight into how a newsroom or a sports journalist

855
00:46:17.320 --> 00:46:22.000
collective will deal with unfolding events that are very difficult

856
00:46:22.039 --> 00:46:24.639
to deal with in the first place. What do you

857
00:46:24.679 --> 00:46:25.480
show on screen?

858
00:46:25.800 --> 00:46:29.360
Do you encourage the plo so much going on in

859
00:46:29.400 --> 00:46:31.159
this film? Very impressed.

860
00:46:31.559 --> 00:46:34.719
Yeah, And I also thought of The Teacher's Lounge is

861
00:46:34.760 --> 00:46:38.199
a phenomenal film if people haven't seen it, because the

862
00:46:38.480 --> 00:46:43.000
leone Benish plays the sort of teacher trying to get

863
00:46:43.039 --> 00:46:46.199
the bottom of a particular matter involving theft, and it

864
00:46:46.239 --> 00:46:49.159
goes far further than that. So if people haven't seen

865
00:46:49.159 --> 00:46:51.880
that one, I would highly commend it. What about you, Jackie,

866
00:46:51.960 --> 00:46:55.719
what did you think of this movie September five?

867
00:46:56.559 --> 00:47:00.800
I all agree with pretty much everything said about September five.

868
00:47:01.840 --> 00:47:04.679
Real sense of immersion in it, and I think that's

869
00:47:05.239 --> 00:47:09.599
thanks to the obviously the painstaking research that they've done,

870
00:47:09.639 --> 00:47:14.480
and as you say, using authentic materials and dialogue and

871
00:47:14.519 --> 00:47:17.960
all those sorts of things. A real sense of you know,

872
00:47:18.119 --> 00:47:21.840
kind of being there behind the scenes and not always

873
00:47:21.880 --> 00:47:24.679
really knowing what's going on and having to make decisions

874
00:47:24.679 --> 00:47:28.280
on the fly. And one thing that apart from the

875
00:47:30.400 --> 00:47:33.400
actual story of what's going on and that that I

876
00:47:33.519 --> 00:47:37.599
found interesting as a byproduct of looking back, is it

877
00:47:37.639 --> 00:47:41.920
does show how much technology has advanced in fifty years,

878
00:47:41.960 --> 00:47:44.480
which we know, of course, but it's really interesting to

879
00:47:44.559 --> 00:47:48.039
look at the immediacy of the comparison of what they were,

880
00:47:48.239 --> 00:47:51.719
how they were gathering news back then, and yet how

881
00:47:51.760 --> 00:47:54.159
some things have never changed of the way I use

882
00:47:54.199 --> 00:47:57.000
hound will chase a story and you know, go for

883
00:47:57.079 --> 00:48:01.280
the best angle and be making decisions on the fly

884
00:48:01.360 --> 00:48:05.480
about what they can and can't use ethics and using

885
00:48:05.519 --> 00:48:08.840
their contacts, and and the politics of course that are

886
00:48:08.840 --> 00:48:13.440
going on within the within the sports area there in

887
00:48:13.480 --> 00:48:19.079
the news area. So really interesting and very involving, especially

888
00:48:19.280 --> 00:48:23.159
if you don't have two people in the audience at

889
00:48:23.119 --> 00:48:26.039
the cinema just talking NonStop and looking at their phones

890
00:48:26.119 --> 00:48:27.760
all the time, which was really annoying.

891
00:48:27.920 --> 00:48:30.760
But there you go, Yes, Okay, Unfortunately you had to

892
00:48:30.760 --> 00:48:31.239
put up with that.

893
00:48:31.639 --> 00:48:35.840
The I did the I find it fascinating because I

894
00:48:35.880 --> 00:48:38.639
was in both radio and TV sort of soon after

895
00:48:38.679 --> 00:48:42.280
this this film was set, and I remember the equipment

896
00:48:42.320 --> 00:48:43.000
that we used.

897
00:48:43.280 --> 00:48:46.159
I remember. It's it's fascinating you.

898
00:48:46.119 --> 00:48:51.159
Too, Sorry you said that, Yes, ye did you You

899
00:48:51.239 --> 00:48:54.400
must have used in radio. If you were in radio,

900
00:48:54.800 --> 00:48:59.320
they used to cut actual tape, right, splicing was it

901
00:48:59.360 --> 00:49:00.920
was a big part of what you were doing. And

902
00:49:02.239 --> 00:49:05.519
it was so archaic looking back. I mean, I was

903
00:49:05.519 --> 00:49:09.719
brought up in the era of portable typewriters and things

904
00:49:09.719 --> 00:49:12.960
of that nature, and of course remember white out and

905
00:49:13.000 --> 00:49:16.119
tipics and all of those sorts of things. And it's

906
00:49:16.280 --> 00:49:19.320
fascinating to look back and how technology really has changed.

907
00:49:19.360 --> 00:49:22.280
Because I mean, Greg, you who you like your music,

908
00:49:22.320 --> 00:49:25.719
and Sandy as well. You remember cassette tape and even

909
00:49:26.719 --> 00:49:29.760
and even on records they weren't they weren't all forty

910
00:49:29.760 --> 00:49:32.880
fives and what was there were different There was forty.

911
00:49:32.599 --> 00:49:35.480
Five, third, forty five and seventy eighths.

912
00:49:35.679 --> 00:49:38.000
Yeah, in the seventy I mean, it's all of this stuff.

913
00:49:38.400 --> 00:49:42.559
Like if you speak to our kids, they wouldn't they

914
00:49:42.559 --> 00:49:43.800
wouldn't know what you're talking about.

915
00:49:44.360 --> 00:49:48.639
It's final, that's back this way.

916
00:49:49.079 --> 00:49:51.719
I go into JB HI find there and the CD

917
00:49:51.800 --> 00:49:54.519
section which used to sack up probably a lot of space,

918
00:49:54.559 --> 00:49:57.280
has now been compacted and the vinyl section is spread

919
00:49:57.400 --> 00:49:59.559
like someone turned the lights off and it's multiplying.

920
00:50:00.119 --> 00:50:03.159
Yes, which I'm very pleased about. There's any expecsive must

921
00:50:03.159 --> 00:50:04.360
have an expensive.

922
00:50:03.920 --> 00:50:07.079
Now to tend the lights off. Following on is this

923
00:50:07.599 --> 00:50:11.360
is this AI? The AI of sex on records? Is

924
00:50:11.400 --> 00:50:14.159
that we're business, Greg right, it's pretty little.

925
00:50:14.199 --> 00:50:18.480
The little hard Live goes into the do it please please?

926
00:50:18.599 --> 00:50:20.800
We're going to put it. You know we're going to

927
00:50:20.880 --> 00:50:23.039
be taken off here in a moment. Good golly man.

928
00:50:24.000 --> 00:50:27.679
Okay, so I've totally lost it it.

929
00:50:27.800 --> 00:50:30.480
So where were we? Who was talking?

930
00:50:30.559 --> 00:50:34.000
Coment about September five? Because I really liked it.

931
00:50:34.079 --> 00:50:37.440
I remember living through it and watching it that broadcast

932
00:50:37.519 --> 00:50:38.159
go on air.

933
00:50:38.840 --> 00:50:39.960
Apparently over a.

934
00:50:39.920 --> 00:50:43.719
Billion people watch that happen. I love the way that

935
00:50:43.800 --> 00:50:48.280
the sports guys handled the whole thing. My only my

936
00:50:48.400 --> 00:50:54.079
only thing about movie was that it was slightly too technical.

937
00:50:54.440 --> 00:50:57.559
We didn't get any of the emotionality of the of

938
00:50:57.639 --> 00:50:59.000
the athletes at all.

939
00:50:59.079 --> 00:51:01.039
We didn't get to know any of the people.

940
00:51:01.079 --> 00:51:04.679
It was all from the perspective of the technology and

941
00:51:04.760 --> 00:51:07.159
the team that were handling it, which was obviously the

942
00:51:07.199 --> 00:51:08.239
way it was designed.

943
00:51:08.440 --> 00:51:10.840
I just would have liked to have a little bit more.

944
00:51:10.920 --> 00:51:15.280
Connection, personal connection to the victims of that and the

945
00:51:15.320 --> 00:51:16.440
perpetrators as well.

946
00:51:16.480 --> 00:51:19.440
Perhaps I think other films have done that, though, Sandy,

947
00:51:19.519 --> 00:51:23.239
this one sets itself apart by dealing from this point

948
00:51:23.239 --> 00:51:25.760
of view exclusively but better.

949
00:51:26.079 --> 00:51:29.199
There was also there was also a reference to the

950
00:51:29.599 --> 00:51:33.000
you know, the Israeli who was an American that there

951
00:51:33.039 --> 00:51:33.960
could have been more of that.

952
00:51:34.079 --> 00:51:39.920
But do you remember him, Sandy, No, no, oh, the yeah, yeah,

953
00:51:39.960 --> 00:51:42.360
the no, the guy who it was one of those

954
00:51:42.360 --> 00:51:42.840
who died.

955
00:51:42.880 --> 00:51:45.039
But that there was there was a reference to him,

956
00:51:45.039 --> 00:51:47.360
and in fact they played an interview with him, which

957
00:51:47.360 --> 00:51:49.719
I think was the real footage.

958
00:51:49.960 --> 00:51:52.239
That wasn't the gist of this, of this fire this

959
00:51:52.320 --> 00:51:54.320
general I get that, I get that, but it was

960
00:51:54.480 --> 00:51:58.039
very I wondered how people who I mean, we we

961
00:51:58.119 --> 00:51:59.840
got a lot out of it because we've been in

962
00:51:59.840 --> 00:52:01.159
the industry and.

963
00:52:01.039 --> 00:52:04.639
Because to see all those technology changes that have happened

964
00:52:04.920 --> 00:52:08.760
to recall, you know, that time back in the seventies

965
00:52:09.000 --> 00:52:11.760
when we were working with all that technology. I wonder

966
00:52:11.760 --> 00:52:13.960
how the average punter will relate to it when they

967
00:52:13.960 --> 00:52:17.079
couldn't give a hurt about the technology or the fact

968
00:52:17.119 --> 00:52:19.719
that it was sports as opposed to news handling it

969
00:52:19.880 --> 00:52:21.960
because it wouldn't mean a lot to them. It meant

970
00:52:22.239 --> 00:52:24.880
I mean, we understand that a whole lot better, having

971
00:52:25.239 --> 00:52:28.719
having lived through those times and having undergone your roles

972
00:52:28.760 --> 00:52:29.880
within that industry.

973
00:52:31.599 --> 00:52:33.840
This is silly, but this is an adjunct.

974
00:52:34.119 --> 00:52:37.480
I remember when you had cassette recorders in cars, and

975
00:52:37.519 --> 00:52:40.639
what cassette recorders as well, and when the blasted thing

976
00:52:40.679 --> 00:52:42.960
didn't work and you had to use a pencil to

977
00:52:43.639 --> 00:52:46.599
spoil it back, and oh my golly. You know, it

978
00:52:46.679 --> 00:52:48.960
just feels clunky to even talk about it. So let's

979
00:52:48.960 --> 00:52:51.199
get some scores. Greg, you liked September five?

980
00:52:51.400 --> 00:52:54.880
Well, yeah, haven't even asked my opinion office. We're wunny.

981
00:52:56.360 --> 00:52:59.679
He's on a roll. Where's he's consistent with forgetting?

982
00:53:01.360 --> 00:53:04.199
We're running very short of time. Give us your thoughts please.

983
00:53:04.519 --> 00:53:04.719
Yeah.

984
00:53:04.800 --> 00:53:08.639
Look, this was very claustrophobic film.

985
00:53:08.880 --> 00:53:11.559
It was mostly a short place within that control room

986
00:53:11.599 --> 00:53:16.039
there whether yeah, people were watching events, working out what

987
00:53:16.079 --> 00:53:17.480
to show what not, the show.

988
00:53:17.719 --> 00:53:20.079
Planning how they could get around it and what they

989
00:53:20.079 --> 00:53:20.480
could do.

990
00:53:21.320 --> 00:53:24.000
But I like the astral technology and how they had

991
00:53:24.000 --> 00:53:26.480
to adapt and change things as well as they moved

992
00:53:26.480 --> 00:53:26.960
on there.

993
00:53:27.280 --> 00:53:29.400
But I like what I think we're saying.

994
00:53:29.400 --> 00:53:31.920
You said about the not knowing the carriages and everything

995
00:53:32.800 --> 00:53:35.199
of the you know, the athletes, Now that didn't matter

996
00:53:35.320 --> 00:53:38.760
who You've got the insights of to the the actual

997
00:53:38.800 --> 00:53:41.199
broadcast American team there and what they were going through

998
00:53:41.320 --> 00:53:43.480
and what they were thinking and how they were responding

999
00:53:43.519 --> 00:53:45.559
to the events there, which I thought bought it in

1000
00:53:45.559 --> 00:53:49.639
an immediacyitue. And I liked the way that they incorporated

1001
00:53:49.679 --> 00:53:52.679
that archive wal forties as onto the TVs there, so

1002
00:53:53.119 --> 00:53:56.400
they gave it almost a documentally feel and immediacy that

1003
00:53:56.440 --> 00:53:59.280
you're almost there watching events unfold.

1004
00:53:59.079 --> 00:54:01.000
Yeah, which is really impot See. I'm going to ask

1005
00:54:01.079 --> 00:54:03.840
you something. This is because today has been really bizarre.

1006
00:54:04.559 --> 00:54:07.079
If you look at we're recording this as we're going

1007
00:54:07.119 --> 00:54:09.239
as well, can you just look at your time piece

1008
00:54:09.440 --> 00:54:12.079
and tell me where we're up to because I'm going

1009
00:54:12.119 --> 00:54:14.159
to have to stop it at some point and I think.

1010
00:54:14.039 --> 00:54:16.679
I've got over gone overboard? What does it say?

1011
00:54:17.880 --> 00:54:21.920
Hello, I haven't been recording it.

1012
00:54:21.119 --> 00:54:26.639
Fifty six minutes. Fifty six minutes that started ten.

1013
00:54:26.239 --> 00:54:29.320
I've got fifty four on my screen. Oh do you

1014
00:54:29.360 --> 00:54:32.599
not me? Some restrons? Well, so by you? Yeah, lovely.

1015
00:54:32.719 --> 00:54:37.440
Well, we're technically prolific and efficient. I want scores and

1016
00:54:37.440 --> 00:54:41.159
then we're out of here. So Peter score for September five,

1017
00:54:41.480 --> 00:54:42.760
rated M ninety five minutes.

1018
00:54:43.119 --> 00:54:46.559
Yes, it has an Oscar nomination for Original Screenplay. I

1019
00:54:46.679 --> 00:54:48.119
give it nine out of ten.

1020
00:54:48.400 --> 00:54:51.880
It needed more eight and a half for me, Sandy.

1021
00:54:52.000 --> 00:54:53.000
Yeah, I'll give it an eight.

1022
00:54:53.119 --> 00:54:55.480
And I thought that the ninety however minutes you said,

1023
00:54:55.559 --> 00:54:57.400
was a perfect length, none of this two and a.

1024
00:54:57.400 --> 00:54:59.000
Half or three hour rubbish.

1025
00:54:59.280 --> 00:55:05.760
Yep, very good, right, Greg, I remembered you and what's

1026
00:55:05.800 --> 00:55:06.840
your name? Jacqueline?

1027
00:55:07.519 --> 00:55:09.559
Yes, sorry to be the on the low ball here.

1028
00:55:09.599 --> 00:55:11.599
I really did enjoy it. But I gave it seven

1029
00:55:11.639 --> 00:55:12.639
point five out of ten.

1030
00:55:13.239 --> 00:55:16.760
Oh well, look it's a solid, solid seven point five.

1031
00:55:16.840 --> 00:55:21.880
Solid seven seven seven eight.

1032
00:55:22.119 --> 00:55:24.400
Thank you, folks. It's been a lot of fun.

1033
00:55:24.840 --> 00:55:28.920
Sandy k Jackie Hammerton, Peter Kraus, the Grinch, and Greg

1034
00:55:29.000 --> 00:55:32.639
King keep on grinching. Peter, Well, speak to you very

1035
00:55:32.679 --> 00:55:36.519
soon on a non invisible man. Oh I did say

1036
00:55:36.559 --> 00:55:40.000
Hello Greg, Yes, you are the invisible man today we

1037
00:55:40.039 --> 00:55:42.880
will well, we'll have more of this nonsense very soon.

1038
00:55:42.960 --> 00:55:44.239
First on film and entertainment.

1039
00:55:44.360 --> 00:55:48.119
Signing off and watch a lot of cinema because we

1040
00:55:48.320 --> 00:55:49.400

Catch you next time.
