Design Challenge
20VC

Harry Stebbings has created incredible content over the years, so I was excited when someone challenged us to replicate the website. The end result was solid, and could be near perfect if someone spent a few hours uploading custom images and adjusting text.

What's This?
Design Challenges are a fun way to show off the amazing things you can do with Podpage. We asked podcasters to share their favorite non-Podpage podcast websites and then we spend 15-30 minutes recreating them using only settings available in Podpage with no custom code. Have a website you want to see Podpaged? Submit a challenge here.

The Process

Here's a little insight into how we customized Podpage to look like the original 20VC website.

Overall, this was super successful. Their site is clear and clean and I think with a bit more work, you could get 99% there with Podpage. It would just take some tedious work (uploading images for every episode, adjusting text, etc...

But this was super fun, and I actually feel like there are some features from it I want to steal and add to Podpage. So, this was a great and valuable challenge.

What Worked

  • Look and feel of the site header was near identical and could be basically identical if we uploaded the same font.
  • Overall episode list layout was very similar, which is the core of the website, so that makes the sites feel very consistent.
  • The featured episode as the latest episode is a new feature we're working on and this was a good demo.

What Didn't Work

  • They use custom images specifically for their website, so we only used the episode artwork from the feed, which is visually busier and square vs landscape.
  • They have category toggling on the homepage, which is awesome and something I want to add.
  • The episode title text they put in their feed is looooooooong. So that makes the website look very wordy. That would need to be edited on and episode-by-episode basis. They don't use the same text on their website.
