00:00:35.048 --> 00:00:39.042
So, diving into this week, what are we talking about this week?
00:00:39.042 --> 00:00:45.953
Have you ever had a great idea or a goal, only to overthink it until you took yourself out of it?
00:00:45.953 --> 00:00:48.140
You're not alone Now.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:54.774
The fact is that over 70% of people feel stuck in overthinking at some point in their lives.
00:00:54.774 --> 00:01:14.350
This is from Harvard Business Review, so you'll be able to reflect on your lives and realize that there must have been a time where you had a big goal, a big vision, a big promotion, something you wanted to achieve, and the more you thought about it, the more complicated it became.
00:01:14.350 --> 00:01:25.713
And the more complicated it became, the less you felt like doing it, the less capable you felt of achieving it until it became so overwhelming that you just ended up packing in the idea.
00:01:25.713 --> 00:01:33.361
So in this episode, really, we're going to be talking about exploring why inaction happens to all of us.
00:01:33.361 --> 00:01:36.287
Inaction can also be a form of procrastination.
00:01:36.287 --> 00:01:40.944
Why does it happen to us and how can we break through it with practical steps.
00:01:40.944 --> 00:01:53.766
You know me, I'm all about practical steps and I love to share stuff that I personally struggle with as well, because I'm human, you're human and in reality, at some level, we all struggle with the same things.
00:01:53.766 --> 00:02:00.025
So that's what we're going to be doing, because overthinking keeps us stuck so many of us.
00:02:00.025 --> 00:02:03.954
It keeps us stuck, and the year is only just beginning.
00:02:03.954 --> 00:02:15.163
So this is something we absolutely have to nail down break this habit and be able to get into a place where we're just building and achieving and achieving and achieving.
00:02:15.163 --> 00:02:18.049
So let's get into this now.
00:02:18.088 --> 00:02:20.774
So why does inaction happen?
00:02:20.774 --> 00:02:23.205
Why does getting stuck happen?
00:02:23.205 --> 00:02:27.681
The root cause of inaction really is a number of things.
00:02:27.681 --> 00:02:29.024
There's three things I'll talk about.
00:02:29.024 --> 00:02:32.520
One is the fear of failure, and you see what's happening.
00:02:32.520 --> 00:02:35.527
It's circling back to episode last week where we spoke about fear.
00:02:35.527 --> 00:02:39.945
If you haven't listened to our episode last week, I encourage you to go.
00:02:39.945 --> 00:02:40.527
Listen to it.
00:02:40.527 --> 00:02:44.082
We break down fear and how it paralyzes us.
00:02:44.705 --> 00:02:50.268
So number one for inaction and the reason for inaction is the fear of failure or making the wrong decision.
00:02:50.268 --> 00:03:03.929
You think, if I invest all my money in this new business, if I invest all my time in this idea, if I invest all my emotions in this person, what if it goes wrong and it's the wrong decision, okay?
00:03:03.929 --> 00:03:06.674
Number two perfectionism.
00:03:06.674 --> 00:03:11.611
You're waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect outcome.
00:03:11.611 --> 00:03:23.391
You're waiting for things to line up to give you the confidence that it's going to happen, because perfectionism and waiting for the perfect moment is really about me or you waiting for things to give us a guarantee?
00:03:23.391 --> 00:03:28.423
Newsflash there is no guarantee that you're going to be successful.
00:03:29.465 --> 00:03:33.633
Number three overwhelming goals that feel too big.
00:03:33.633 --> 00:03:39.257
To start your goals just feel too big and really there's a trick around your goal being too big.
00:03:39.257 --> 00:03:40.801
It's good to have a big goal.
00:03:40.801 --> 00:03:44.050
It's amazing, because you really should have goals that are bigger than you.
00:03:44.050 --> 00:03:46.365
You should have goals that stretch you.
00:03:46.365 --> 00:03:50.925
You should have goals that make you feel like I can't do this by myself.
00:03:50.925 --> 00:04:01.092
I need some higher power, some faith, some belief, something to plug in, to give me that rocket fuel for all the physical activity that I put in myself.
00:04:01.092 --> 00:04:03.383
So those are the three things.
00:04:03.403 --> 00:04:05.326
So what's the impact of overthinking Number one?
00:04:05.326 --> 00:04:08.991
Missed opportunity, wasted time and increased activity.
00:04:08.991 --> 00:04:13.425
Let me ask you a question Is there any of you here that has this experience?
00:04:13.425 --> 00:04:18.345
You had a great idea that came to you and you thought you were going to do it and you put it off.
00:04:18.345 --> 00:04:27.903
And then, a few months later or a year later, someone else is doing the exact idea you had and all of a sudden, you're thinking, oh, I wish I should have done that.
00:04:27.903 --> 00:04:32.819
That's what's called a missed opportunity, wasted time and increased anxiety.
00:04:32.819 --> 00:04:42.509
And let me give you let me give you something to think about for this a lot of time we think about the missed opportunities, but we don't think about that.
00:04:42.509 --> 00:04:55.831
We're missing out on learning, because, whatever happens that missed opportunity, you'd have learned something, you'd have made new friends, you'd have built up knowledge and you'd have learned a way not to do what you wanted to do.
00:04:55.831 --> 00:05:05.660
So the reality is that, even if you had failed, you would have still come out on the plus side, but we miss out on that and we end up sitting down and not doing anything.
00:05:06.461 --> 00:05:13.180
So what we want to talk about is now is three hacks that we can use to break inaction.
00:05:13.180 --> 00:05:15.783
So the first one start small.
00:05:15.783 --> 00:05:35.454
The reason why you're being inactive and you're not taking step because your big goal is hairy and scary is that it's big, and if anyone told you today that you were going to own the biggest, I don't know.
00:05:35.454 --> 00:05:38.593
Let's take a rough example you're going to own the biggest supermarkets in the world.
00:05:38.593 --> 00:05:40.841
It would literally go in your mind.
00:05:40.841 --> 00:05:52.363
You'd literally think of a big supermarket, like some of the big supermarkets, like Walmart, shoprite, tesco's, carrefour, all the big brands and you think how on earth am I going to open that?
00:05:52.363 --> 00:05:52.985
I can't.
00:05:52.985 --> 00:06:13.901
But what you should do is if you think back to the people who started these supermarkets or these big chains, they started out with a small shop, made a bit of money and then bought some more products and got a bigger shop till they owned their full big first supermarket and then, when they made enough money, they opened two, more and more.
00:06:13.901 --> 00:06:15.103
So they started small.
00:06:15.584 --> 00:06:22.182
So you have to break your goal into the smallest possible action and focus only on that.
00:06:22.182 --> 00:06:24.348
Don't focus on anything else.
00:06:24.348 --> 00:06:27.196
I'll share a story with you briefly.
00:06:27.196 --> 00:06:33.699
I was talking to my coach recently and we were speaking about a new business I'm I'm looking into starting, I've started.
00:06:33.699 --> 00:06:44.250
And then I said, and then my coach said for me, the problem is you're thinking of the end goal and when you think of the end goal, the reality is that you're nowhere near the end goal.
00:06:44.250 --> 00:06:50.987
Think of the smallest possible action you can take and do that and tick that off.
00:06:50.987 --> 00:06:53.228
And then we go the next day and think of something else.
00:06:53.228 --> 00:06:59.490
So, for example, if you're stuck on writing a book, start with one sentence, or brainstorm for five minutes.
00:07:00.781 --> 00:07:10.052
If you're thinking of I don't know being a big time event planner, start with just planning your own child's event from beginning to end, but doing it properly.
00:07:10.052 --> 00:07:12.447
Or your friend's event, if you haven't got children.
00:07:12.447 --> 00:07:15.266
Or your family's event.
00:07:15.266 --> 00:07:18.949
If you're thinking of being one of the biggest influencers, how about this?
00:07:18.949 --> 00:07:23.031
Start with one Instagram story or one tweet or one message on X.
00:07:23.031 --> 00:07:25.107
You have to start small.
00:07:25.107 --> 00:07:26.600
And why does this work?
00:07:26.600 --> 00:07:28.343
Small actions reduce overwhelm and they build momentum.
00:07:28.343 --> 00:07:28.603
Message on X.
00:07:28.603 --> 00:07:29.083
You have to start small.
00:07:29.083 --> 00:07:29.644
And why does this work?
00:07:29.663 --> 00:07:30.964
Small actions reduce overwhelm and they build momentum.
00:07:30.964 --> 00:07:37.211
So the small action immediately just makes you feel okay, this is achievable, I can achieve this?
00:07:37.211 --> 00:07:38.213
This is a small ask.
00:07:38.213 --> 00:07:51.887
And also you do it once you feel okay, I feel good about myself, and then you take off another action and then you start to build momentum to become a big ball that is just gathering up speed, and then you tick off another action and then you start to build momentum to become a big ball that is just gathering up speed, and then you just start to tick off things.
00:07:51.887 --> 00:07:59.482
So here's a practical tip I want to give you for this week Set a timer for 10 minutes and just start 10 minutes.
00:07:59.482 --> 00:08:04.168
Do a little bit of whatever it is you want to achieve and after that take a break.
00:08:04.901 --> 00:08:06.639
Often, starting is the hardest part.
00:08:06.639 --> 00:08:09.564
That is the hardest part of anything Just starting.
00:08:09.564 --> 00:08:12.127
So that's hack number one start small.
00:08:12.127 --> 00:08:19.012
So before we go on, you know, breaking through in action requires clarity and support.
00:08:19.380 --> 00:08:23.932
So, speaking of which, here's something successful people often don't share, but they do.
00:08:23.932 --> 00:08:26.266
Successful people have coaches.
00:08:26.266 --> 00:08:27.735
Often don't share, but they do.
00:08:27.735 --> 00:08:28.800
Successful people have coaches.
00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:34.230
They have coaches that help them break their biggest glorious versions into smaller things that they achieve.
00:08:34.230 --> 00:08:45.408
I remember seeing a picture of Jay-Z and Warren Buffet, and this was when Jay-Z the rapper was trying to get into investment and he sat down with Warren Buffet and he gave him little little bit of things to do.
00:08:45.408 --> 00:08:51.568
So you see, see, even some of the most popular rappers in the world, most successful people, have coaches.
00:08:51.568 --> 00:09:09.480
So whether it's finding direction, overcoming roadblocks or just taking the first step, coaching gives you the edge to move forward with confidence, and that's why, at mycareerlabscouk, we help you identify what's holding you back and create an action plan to achieve your goals.
00:09:09.480 --> 00:09:29.224
Whether it's getting promotion, getting a new job, becoming a director in a business or in your place of work, or overcoming some of the blockers to you, becoming the best you can be and earning your maximum salary or wage at where your work or your business, you need a coach to help you on that journey with a step-by-step action plan.
00:09:29.224 --> 00:09:31.669
Don't let inaction keep you stuck.
00:09:31.669 --> 00:09:38.730
Visit mycareerlabcouk today and take the action and the first step towards success.
00:09:38.730 --> 00:09:42.080
So let's get back to tackling inaction head-on.
00:09:43.142 --> 00:09:47.505
Hack number two focus on progress, not perfection.
00:09:47.505 --> 00:09:52.130
I'll say that again focus on progress, not perfection.
00:09:52.130 --> 00:09:54.013
So how do you do this?
00:09:54.013 --> 00:10:07.400
Shift your mindset to prioritize progress over perfection, want to tell you is.
00:10:07.400 --> 00:10:08.945
Forget about the end goal, the end vision, what you're trying to achieve.
00:10:08.945 --> 00:10:12.272
Your number one objective should be let me just make a little bit of progress.
00:10:12.272 --> 00:10:16.690
I don't want to just get to the end goal right now, because that's so far away.
00:10:16.690 --> 00:10:19.740
Let me just make a little bit of progress.
00:10:19.740 --> 00:10:21.163
So let me give an example.
00:10:21.163 --> 00:10:29.582
A lot of us wait till everything is just perfect, but I would say, just start, and as you start, you refine as you go along.
00:10:29.582 --> 00:10:31.046
I'll share a personal example.
00:10:31.066 --> 00:10:42.009
I remember when I started this podcast, I didn't have any equipment and I would sit down in a small cupboard and I'd be sweating and I'd have a little my phone and I'd speak into my phone and record the first podcast.
00:10:42.009 --> 00:10:46.126
I encourage you listen to the very first podcast on the Unleashed podcast episodes.
00:10:46.126 --> 00:10:47.571
You will notice a difference.
00:10:47.571 --> 00:10:56.625
There was even no video then, but what I learned after that was that, okay, you need a microphone, you need a camera, you need a studio, you need somewhere that is soundproof.
00:10:56.625 --> 00:11:00.528
You need all of these things, and as I started to discover these things, I got better.
00:11:00.528 --> 00:11:02.184
So why does this work?
00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:04.807
Perfectionism paralyzes action.
00:11:04.807 --> 00:11:13.152
I cannot begin to tell you the number of people I've coached, I've spoken to who, because they're so focused on being perfect, they get paralyzed.
00:11:13.152 --> 00:11:14.923
And there's something we always talk about.
00:11:14.923 --> 00:11:18.960
We call it paralysis analysis or analysis by paralysis.
00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:20.643
Just do it.
00:11:20.643 --> 00:11:28.215
The reality is that by starting, you are already% better than the rest of the world because at least you started.
00:11:28.215 --> 00:11:31.889
Progress, even if it's imperfect, builds confidence.
00:11:31.889 --> 00:11:36.866
Confidence comes from ticking the box, saying I did it, I'm getting better and better.
00:11:36.866 --> 00:11:41.567
So here's a practical tip Think of progress as a staircase.
00:11:41.567 --> 00:11:49.389
Your vision, your goal is the top of the stairs and every day you're climbing the staircase, one step at a time, gets you closer to the top.
00:11:51.301 --> 00:11:53.950
Hack number three create accountability.
00:11:53.950 --> 00:11:59.191
This is a mixed one, because you always hear people say don't share your goals with anyone.
00:11:59.191 --> 00:12:01.248
Don't do that, and that makes sense.
00:12:01.248 --> 00:12:08.229
But what you should absolutely do is internalize your goal till it becomes your goal and you're absolutely sure this is something you want to achieve.
00:12:08.229 --> 00:12:14.772
Then share your goal with someone who can hold you accountable, and it has to be someone who can hold you accountable.
00:12:14.772 --> 00:12:26.191
Don't share your goal with someone who is always negative, someone who doesn't believe in you, someone who doesn't encourage you or someone who has never achieved anything like what you are trying to achieve.
00:12:26.191 --> 00:12:31.972
Share your goal with someone who understands the journey you're trying to go on and who will hold you accountable.
00:12:31.972 --> 00:12:40.433
A good example tell a friend, someone you respect, or a mentor or a coach your goal and set regular check-ins to report your progress.
00:12:40.433 --> 00:12:49.434
Another thing you can do is find someone else that wants to achieve something and have a weekly call where regularly, you touch base with each other and find out how you're getting on.
00:12:49.434 --> 00:12:51.465
So why does this work?
00:12:51.465 --> 00:12:57.298
Accountability provides motivation and the support to keep you moving.
00:12:57.298 --> 00:13:04.974
It provides the motivation and the support because the support is the person encouraging you, saying Femi, come on, you can do this.
00:13:04.974 --> 00:13:19.875
So here's a practical tip Join a community or find a mentor to stay committed and again, you can visit my career lab our sponsors of this podcast and there you can get a coach or a mentor to support you on this journey.
00:13:21.299 --> 00:13:25.822
So the key takeaways and actions for this are a couple of three hacks.
00:13:25.822 --> 00:13:29.668
Number one start small and take the tiniest step first.
00:13:29.668 --> 00:13:31.813
Just take a tiny step.
00:13:31.813 --> 00:13:42.167
In Atomic Habits by James Clay, he says take small steps because these small steps are a vote for the person you want to become.
00:13:42.167 --> 00:13:51.953
When I started my podcast, me recording a podcast every week was a vote for myself becoming a podcaster.
00:13:51.953 --> 00:13:53.595
You want to start a business.
00:13:53.595 --> 00:13:54.535
You want to write a book.
00:13:54.535 --> 00:13:55.897
You want to become an event planner.
00:13:55.897 --> 00:13:57.278
You want to own a school.
00:13:57.278 --> 00:13:59.450
You want to get into properties.
00:13:59.450 --> 00:14:00.139
You want to get a promotion.
00:14:00.139 --> 00:14:03.567
Start with one tiny step.
00:14:04.750 --> 00:14:07.143
Number two focus on progress, not perfection.
00:14:07.143 --> 00:14:09.908
Just begin and adjust along the way.
00:14:09.908 --> 00:14:18.726
The most important thing is you start, because when you start, you have the confidence of starting, you know what you're doing wrong and you can begin to adjust as you go along the way.
00:14:18.726 --> 00:14:36.443
Number three share your goal with someone who holds you accountable, someone you respect, someone who honors your goals, someone who honors what you're trying to achieve, and someone who has been down that road or has achieved something and understands what it takes to discipline yourself and focus.
00:14:36.443 --> 00:14:39.630
Okay, so takeaway actions.
00:14:39.630 --> 00:14:42.142
Write down one goal you've been procrastinating on.
00:14:42.142 --> 00:14:48.114
Identify the smallest step you can take today and share your goal with someone who will hold you accountable.
00:14:48.114 --> 00:14:54.044
So, as I wrap up today, here's my final message to you Action beats inaction.
00:14:54.306 --> 00:14:57.148
Every day, they say culture beats strategy.
00:14:57.148 --> 00:14:58.669
They say action beats inaction.
00:14:58.669 --> 00:15:06.336
Even though you're doing the most tiniest thing, you're way better than someone who hasn't even started or done anything.
00:15:06.336 --> 00:15:10.169
So action beats inaction every single day of the week.
00:15:10.169 --> 00:15:13.149
So don't let fear or overthinking, keep you stuck.
00:15:13.149 --> 00:15:15.166
Take that first step today.
00:15:15.166 --> 00:15:20.186
Number two if this episode inspired you, share it with someone who needs a push or to take action.
00:15:20.186 --> 00:15:22.517
And if you're someone who's already an action person, share it with someone who needs a push or to take action.
00:15:22.517 --> 00:15:27.210
And if you're someone who's already an action person, share it with someone who needs to hear this to take action.
00:15:27.210 --> 00:15:32.979
And don't forget to subscribe for more insights on youtube, on the podcast platform, and leave a review.
00:15:33.019 --> 00:15:38.856
Share a good message, get unleashed, and getting unleashed is about taking action every day.
00:15:38.856 --> 00:15:40.923
You cannot become unleashed if you're stuck.
00:15:40.923 --> 00:15:51.447
You only become unleashed by taking the chains off, and you take the chains off by taking one step at a time, finding someone to hold you accountable and focusing on progress, not perfection.
00:15:51.447 --> 00:15:54.422
I hope you have an amazing week where you make progress.
00:15:54.422 --> 00:16:06.432
2025 is going to be about us all achieving our greatest, most amazing goals, because when we come back at the end of 2025, I'm hoping we're all sharing these wonderful goals with ourselves.
00:16:06.432 --> 00:16:08.659
So find someone out there to encourage.
00:16:08.659 --> 00:16:16.222
If someone comes to you to ask for support and accountability, make sure you back them and don't give them negative vibes.
00:16:16.222 --> 00:16:26.173
And you yourself, get someone to encourage you go out, smash the week, achieve one little thing, and for me it's get unleashed, stay unleashed.
