In this special Where Are They Now? episode of the WHEN Stories Podcast, Wendy Babcock catches up with former WHEN Stories speaker Erica Gumieny, who took the stage in March 2025.
For Erica, sharing her WHEN Story wasn’t simply about giving a talk.
It unlocked something.
While developing her story, Wendy helped Erica uncover a specific moment she hadn’t even realized was significant. That discovery changed not only how Erica approached her talk, but how she thought about creativity, her work, and the message she wanted to put into the world.
Since stepping off the WHEN Stories stage, Erica has:
• Published the book she spent 15 years working toward and finally held it in her hands.
• Used her WHEN Story as a springboard for talking about her book and its message in a deeper, more meaningful way.
• Landed speaking engagements and stepped into speaking with a new sense of confidence and determination.
• Changed the way she writes, creates content, and shares her story by focusing not only on herself, but on the person who needs to hear it.
• Given herself permission to stop doing what she thinks she should do and create in a way that feels aligned with who she actually is.
But one of the biggest shifts has been internal.
Erica describes success at this stage of her life as alignment: being able to bring together her faith, humor, encouragement, depth, sass, and personality without feeling like she has to separate those pieces of herself.
And the experience of actually telling her story was deeply personal.
After sharing one of the most vulnerable parts of her life from the WHEN Stories stage, Erica walked off, embraced Wendy, and sobbed. She describes it as a deep release.
Today, she doesn't describe herself as simply more confident.
She's determined.
As Erica puts it: enough playing around. There are things inside us that keep asking to be said, created, or shared. At some point, we have to stop walking around them and do the thing.
