Ten extra hours a week sounds impossible until you see where they are leaking. We talk with simplified productivity strategist and author Nichica Melton about why so many high achievers feel maxed out even when they are doing “all the right things,” and how burnout often comes from spending time on motion instead of investing time for a real return.

We get concrete about what simplified productivity looks like in real life: why traditional to-do lists can backfire, how “busy” becomes a hamster wheel, and the warning signs your habits are working against you, like a mind that will not rest at night and a constant pull in ten directions. Nichica shares the core idea behind her book Cut the BS (where BS means Bogus Strategies), including a practical mindset shift around celebrating small wins and letting go of the pressure to copy someone else’s routine, like forcing an earlier start time that does not fit your season.

We also dig into boundaries and time protection when everything feels urgent, including one of the most memorable reminders: someone else’s urgency is not your emergency. From goal setting that breaks down yearly vision into weekly action, to collaboration as a productivity strategy through delegation, automation, and the right support, this conversation is built for entrepreneurs, professionals, and leaders who want sustainable time management without sacrificing their most valuable asset: themselves.

If you have ever wished for more time, more focus, and more peace, hit play, then share this with a friend and leave a review so more people can reclaim their week.

The 10 Hours Question

SPEAKER_02

Welcome, welcome, welcome to another episode of ReadySet Collaborate with Wanda Pearson, where collaboration is the key to success. That's my word. Collaboration is the key to success. So let me ask you a question. What would you do if you could get 10 hours back in your week? I know I would love to get 10 hours back in my week, Nishika, because I just said that I need more time. More hours in a day, right? Would you grow your business, spend more time with your family, rest, work on the dream you've been putting off? Yes. Or simply give yourself permission to breathe. I would love to do that. How about you, Nishka? Breathe.

SPEAKER_00

All the time.

SPEAKER_02

My guest today, Nishika Melton, is a simplified productivity strategist who helps high-achieving professionals and entrepreneurs reclaim 10 hours back into every week, giving them the opportunity to reach their goals and walk in their full potential without sacrificing their most powerful asset, themselves. Nishika is the author of Cut the BS. First, Mr. Nishika, I said BS. I know what I was thinking when I saw BS, right? Seven simple strategies to unlock high productivity, where she challenges us to rethink what productivity really means. Today we're going to talk about productivity, priorities, time management, burnout, and how we can accomplish more of what matters most without losing ourselves in the process. So, Nishito, welcome to the Ready Set Collaborate. Say hello to the audience.

SPEAKER_01

Hello, audience. It's so good to be here again. I am a repeat customer.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. And we all we live, we don't know how to stop talking because we just have that energy with each other.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

I am so happy you're back on here, and I'm going to be on her podcast. So we just receive back and forth here. But yeah, but no, this is actually a great time to really talk about productivity because you believe it's October, it's almost November, and they got Christmas stuff out.

SPEAKER_01

Listen, they started putting Christmas stuff out in July in North Carolina. Like what are we doing?

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah, no, it's it's the time is gone by. I love how you say reclaim 10 hours back every week. That that would be a dream as far as reclaiming the definitely. But I am so happy that you're back on uh Ready to Collaborate podcast. So let me ask you a question.

Spend Time Or Invest It

SPEAKER_02

So you say help people reclaim 10 hours of hours per week, where are the most high achievers losing their 10 hours?

SPEAKER_01

So there's a couple of different categories of high-achieving professionals, even high achieving entrepreneurs. You've got those who understand that time is something that you invest. You invest your time. That way you get a return on your investment. So when you invest your time, you're doing things that are intentionally going to move the needle forward. You're clear on your goals, you're clear on the people that you need to connect with, the ways that you need to connect with them. And so you're investing your time. And then you've got the other category of high-achieving professionals, entrepreneurs who spend their time. When you spend your time doing a lot of different things that don't really connect to what you say you want your end result to be, the only thing you wind up with is chaos and exhaustion because you're spending it. There's no return on investment. That's not a play on words. That's real. That's real talk. Because I can spend my time doing busy work. I can spend my time looking like I'm getting all the things done because I'm moving and shaking and moving and shaking. But what I'm spending my time doing and who I'm spending my time on, it's not giving me a return. So I'm working twice as hard or three times as hard trying to move that same needle forward versus in the other category who's learned how to invest. I'm very strategic, I'm very intentional, and I move in that way.

SPEAKER_02

Awesome,

Building A Simpler Productivity Framework

SPEAKER_02

awesome. I love that. So what led you to become a simplified productivity strategist?

SPEAKER_01

Like I think I did that the last time I was on too. Have experienced in real time what it is to be running on fumes, to get comfortable being on fumes and spending my time doing all these different things for all these different people. But then when it came time for me to get to where I needed to go, there it was crickets. There wasn't anybody around that could help me. So I was constantly drained, constantly depleted, constantly trying to figure out what do I need to do? What do I need to do? What I what do I need to do? I tried many different productivity programs. And what I realized, Wanda, and it took me a minute to realize it, was that these programs, and no no harm, no shade, no disrespect, but these programs were written by men who had wives doing what I was doing. So they weren't writing and creating their programs for me because they had a wife doing what I was doing, taking care of the kids, working, all the things, but not really being the best productive version of myself. And so what they were suggesting that needed to be done wouldn't work. It wouldn't work for my life, it wouldn't work for my schedule. I had three small children, I was working a full-time job. I'm Terea would say I was a tripreneur, I was trying this home-based business, that all these different things trying to figure out where my lane was. And so I was always tired, physically tired, mentally tired, just always tired. But I knew how to I knew how to turn that smile on though. I could fake the funk real hard. And it just got to the point where I was just like, God, I can't, I can't do this any longer. I need the formula, I need the framework. And so God just began showing me a simple way because there was already so many other complicated things in my life. I don't need anything else complicated at it. And the way my brain works, when people try to present complicated things to me, my brain immediately rejects it and says, there's a simpler way.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. And I was gonna ask you, but you already kind of answered about your own relationship that actually had you influence the work that you do today. So let's rethink about productivity.

Why To-Do Lists Create Burnout

SPEAKER_02

When you say simplify, simplify productivity, what does that mean? And how is it different from traditional time management? Because I know look, we're in corporate, you got to do time management, you got a traditional time. So, how does that differ from that?

SPEAKER_01

So, I'll give you one example that I used to get a lot of eyebrow, the eyebrow raises. Because in corporate America and in traditional productivity, they teach you to do your list. Write your list, write your list out, your to-do list. When you purchase planners, they'll have a section on the page, on every single page for your to-do list. That's the traditional way of productivity. And all you are doing, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, all you are doing is feeding overwhelm and burnout. You are setting yourself up to be shut down because we can use our imagination for a little bit. If you have your to-do list, if you have your planning time, which everyone should have a planning time, mine is on Sundays. You have your planning time, you do your to-do list for Monday, and you put seven things on that list that you say you have to get done or that you want to get done. And then Monday comes and you get the text message, the email, the phone call, the whatever, all the disruptions, and you wind up getting three things on that list done. So then what happens is the four roll over to Tuesday on top of everything else you've got to get done on Tuesday. So let's say you have seven more. So that's 11 things on Tuesday. You repeat that over and over so that you never feel like you're actually getting anything accomplished because the list doesn't get shorter, it gets longer with, and I had to teach this to my husband because he had taken so many productivity workshops and seminars and master classes and all the whoof. And I said, dude, that doesn't work. Why is your list? You don't even have enough room on the page for your list. What are you doing? Let me show you what you do. So I I had to teach him. I don't do, and it's in my book. To do title of the section is to-do lists are trash. They are trash because you're there's no real celebration in your mind because visually it looks like you're not getting anything done. So the simplified way we get rid of to-do lists. Get it done, get it out, get it in the trash where it belongs. There's no place for it.

SPEAKER_02

I love it.

Busy Work And The Hamster Wheel

SPEAKER_02

And then and actually, that's my next question. So, why is so many high-achieving professionals equate being busy with being productive?

SPEAKER_01

Because that's how we were, that's how we were programmed for those who went to child care, who went to pre-K, kindergarten. You were given and you were taught to focus on busy work. Are you busy? Are you staying busy? You need to give word was programmed into our psyche, into our subconscious. So we're naturally looking for busy work, and you can look busy, but the reality is you're in a hamster wheel, and you're going hard, you're sweating, that wheel is turning, you're exerting a lot of energy, but you're literally at the same spot. You haven't moved anywhere for all that work that you've done, either for yourself or for somebody else. When we understand productivity, or at least let me say, simplified productivity. It's not about doing more. Busy work says more, more. That's what we're taught. That's what we're talking in every level of education. More, you got to do more, gotta do more. Even in college, if you're only taking 12 hours a semester, they will tell you that you won't graduate on time. You got to take more hours. It's always about more. But in simplified productivity, it's not about doing more, it's about doing what is going to move the needle forward, what is going to get you to your destination. And for high-achiev professional and entrepreneur, they have an idea of where they want to go, what they want their the end result to be, but the assistance is needed in creating goals that make sense, being consistent, and then making sure that you're keeping things simple, that you're delegating, you're automating, even deleting. There's some things that you just need to say no to.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I absolutely I agree with that. It's a lot of things that we take on ourselves, and we don't know how to say no. That was that was the biggest thing coming from corporate that I had to learn. Of course, you gotta, when you're in corporate, you gotta do with that as far as what the thing is. I was a team leader. It was when I left corporate that I said, no. No, I'm not doing it. So let me ask you something.

Warning Signs And Focus Techniques

SPEAKER_02

So, what are some warning signs that our productivity habits are actually working against us?

SPEAKER_01

One very obvious warning sign is when you try to sleep and your brain won't let you rest. That means that your wheels are turning and they've been turning all day in multiple directions. Another warning sign is when it's hard for you to focus on one particular thing. We like to medicate that now, and I'm not saying that ADHD, ADD are not real, they are real, though those are real things, and then in some people, it's a situation of you're so used to being busy juggling, throwing all the balls up, and you haven't learned how to hone in. There is a technique called the Pomodoro technique, and the premise is you spend 25 minutes on one task, give one thing 25 minutes of focus, then you take a break for five minutes, and you do that four times so that the last time you do the 25 minutes, you actually step away and take a 15 to 30 minute break. I talk about that in the book, but I also have remixed the Pomodoro technique because I'm a person that once I get honed in, I want to finish it. I don't want to be interrupted, I want to finish what I'm working on. So if you have been acclimated too busy, you have been patting yourself on the back because you're an expert multitasker. But the reality is, it's not that you're a multitasker, it's just that you have learned not to the best benefit, but you have learned how to throw the ball all the balls up, and you have learned how to function being pulled in 10 different directions.

SPEAKER_02

That is so true. And I tell you, I'm definitely one of those warning signs because love is that oh, I gotta do this. When you're doing so many things, and I gotta work and I tell, okay, God, I have to actually say, Peace be still.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

With my mind to be still, to just calm down, don't be anxious. That's what we end up doing. We be anxious, and then we think about everything we have to do. Oh, I gotta do this, and then somebody's pulling you from this way. Say, can you do this? And I'm sounding like my husband. As soon as I come in, I'm I'm at a mastermind all weekend, right? As soon as I get home from the mastermind, my mind, I'm learning all this stuff. Oh, can we work on this? I think time. Give me the break. Give me a break. So let me

Cut The BS And What BS Means

SPEAKER_02

talk forever. So let's talk about your book entitled Cut the BS. Yes. What is what inspired you to write this with the bold title?

SPEAKER_01

BS stands for bogus strategies.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, we had to emphasize that because I know I was thinking about BS.

SPEAKER_01

Say that again. What does BS stand for? Bogus Strategies. So anything bogus, it doesn't matter how you dress it up, what you put on it, what you want to call it. It's not gonna work. It's just not gonna work, and so we're cutting through with this book, which I don't know. No, my screen's not gonna let me show it, but we're cutting through all the crap that doesn't work. So many hacks, and I was talking about this week because I'm about to get just thoroughly annoyed, because everybody wants to get in the productivity lane all of a sudden, and they've got all these little hacks and tips that they want to throw out to people, and it's like stay in your lane, ma'am and sir, stay in your lane because you're when you talk about productivity that's connected to people's mental health, and you got to be careful with what you're throwing out there. This book, and it's not a thick book. I wish I could show it to y'all. It's not a thick book, but within it is so power-packed. This simple strategies to unlock higher productivity. I break it down from time management, the area, looking at the area that you work in, looking at the people who are around you. Look, we look at mindset, we're covering the whole gamut in a very simplified manner that you can literally, whether you are working as somebody's J O B, you're a budding entrepreneur, a seasoned entrepreneur, you can literally take the sections in this book, apply them immediately, and watch the change happen in your world.

SPEAKER_02

Wow. I got, and we're gonna talk about how people can get that book. So I gotta get that book myself. So without giving away the whole book, yeah, what is one of the seven strategies that can make an immediate difference?

SPEAKER_01

Huh. Celebrating small wins.

SPEAKER_02

They gotta get the book.

SPEAKER_01

Just get something to get all the get all the tea, you have to get the book. But one of one of the strategies in there is celebrating small wins. You have to learn how to celebrate yourself and to somebody else, because try to gauge or determine the parameters based off of other people's opinions, and the reality is that's stop letting other people determine what success looks like for you. Stop, stop. You get to celebrate at whatever level it's important to you. And I I've talked about how for some people, being able to drive from A to B and not experience road rage, that's a win. Celebrate that.

SPEAKER_02

That's forgiveness.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, nobody else may not understand that, but that is a win for you. And to go along with the book, I have my mind in my business planner, and there's a section, there's a page at the end of every week where you reflect and you talk about your wins. You talk about what do I need to make my accountability partner aware of? What hit me wrong? There was something I was supposed to do, but I just didn't do it very well. What do I need to work on? All of that is in the planner and it complements the book just to take it a few steps further.

SPEAKER_02

That's awesome. I love it. I love it. We had a girl. I can sit on the podcast yes, but what is one productivity belief or happen you wish more entrepreneurs will let go of? Just one. I know it's a lot.

SPEAKER_01

One that I wish they would let go of.

Celebrate Wins And Ditch The 4 AM Myth

SPEAKER_01

I would say depending on your calendar and your lifestyle, it may not always be feasible for you to start earlier. With all of the productivity programs that I had tried, it was always about starting your day earlier, starting your day earlier, starting your day earlier. And that's not feasible for everybody. It wasn't feasible for me at the time because I had three children. So I woke up, I was already getting up early. Then I had to get them together, get to daycare, and get to work by eight o'clock. So there was no getting up earlier. That seems to be the trend in a lot of productivity programs. Your day earlier. No, start your day early. Whatever early looks like for you, it might be seven o'clock, it might be eight o'clock. Those individuals who pride themselves on getting up at three o'clock in the morning, four o'clock in the morning, every single day. My hat is off to you, but it will not be me. I will not do it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. No, you're absolutely right. Because people do start off like I don't, I'm a late nighter. So I stay up late and I that's when I get more things done. Okay. It's it's better for me to really that's when I think more and say, okay, I need to put my calendar together. We talked the first time. It's gotta be on my calendar. It's gotta be even babysitting. Okay, it's gotta be on my calendar. So let me check my calendar, see if I can babysit today. But it's so important because that's how I delegate my day. Yes, it really is how everything goes. So let's talk about the goals, one of the goals. I'm just gonna kind of go to some of these here. So

Urgency Is Not Your Emergency

SPEAKER_02

how can entrepreneurs protect their energy when everything feels urgent?

SPEAKER_01

Couple of things on word urgent, because people will try to bring their urgency into your space, and their urgency does not mean that it's your emergency, it's urgent for them. But how does that fit into your goals for the day? And then if it's somebody that you really want to help, if you look at your week, does it make sense or do you need to refer them out to somebody? You have to be careful with those urgent quote unquote requests because everything isn't urgent. If it was that urgent, it wouldn't be so last minute if it was that urgent. So really have to, and my framework, in the framework that I created this year, I have a whole system that you run the requests through to see is this something that I need to be doing? Is it something somebody else needs to be doing? Or is it just I don't even need to worry about it somewhere else? Because your urgency is not my emergency. Oh, I love say that again.

SPEAKER_02

Say it again your urgency is not my emergency. Yes, yes. I love that, I love that, and then it's about delegating too. Everything's not on me. Delegate, okay. You do this, and I do this. It's about, and I tell you, I always talk about it. I don't know if I told you about my four C's in the relationship and business, communication, commitment, compromise, and consideration. All of those have to do with what we do in our relationships and in our business. So communicating to us to each other in that urgency, like you said, it's not my emergency. I'm gonna run that on my husband. You're urgent, it's not my emergency. Oh Lord, I said Nishika taught me that. Don't put my name, do not put my name in that. No, I love that dog, because that is so true. It is true. Can you come here a minute? And it's really because I'm always busy, I'm always doing stuff. So when I do come right in, he's like, Can you do this for me? That's his urgency. Give me a minute, it's not my emergency. So thank you. Thank you for bringing that out. I appreciate that. All right, as we go along here, so let's start, let's talk about the purpose for their collaboration.

Align The Calendar With Goals

SPEAKER_02

How can I make sure their schedules actually reflect their biggest goals and priorities?

SPEAKER_01

So you've got to make sure, number one, that you have established what your big goal is for the year. And then you break that down by quarter, you break it then down by month, then you break it down by week. And these are all things that I teach my clients to do. And then you make sure that what you're building for the day is going to get you towards that end result that you said you wanted to be able to accomplish. Come whether you're cutting it off Saturday, cutting it off Sunday, whatever your cutoff is for the week. You've got to make sure that everything is digestible. Because if you look at it and it makes your head hurt, it makes you feel overwhelmed, it makes you feel lost, then hasn't been taken down to its simplest form, or it's actually not something that is in alignment with where you want to go. It could be possible, and I would only know this by talking to the person, it could be possible that you've actually taken on somebody else's goals and made them your own.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. I love that. That is so true. So, how can entrepreneurs let me ask this

Collaboration As A Productivity Tool

SPEAKER_02

question here? Okay. So, since this is ready, set collaborate, how has collaboration helped you grow personally and professionally?

SPEAKER_01

Oh man. Collaboration, how I'm on this podcast, collaborating. You have to know that, like I mentioned earlier, staying in your lane, you can't bring everything to everybody. So you partner with other people who can fill that gap. And by them filling gap, they're taking that off your plate so you can focus on what you need to focus on. It's not about them stealing a client or getting more stage time. Lord have mercy. The word of God says that your gifts will make room for you. So I ain't got to be worrying about all that little simple stuff. That's simple in a different way. Yes, collaboration, that's like the golden way of thinking. We have to collaborate with one another in order to properly fill the needs of the people that we're called to serve. Because you you cannot do it all.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. And that brings us into how can collaboration itself become a strategy, a productivity strategy rather than trying to do it everything yourself.

SPEAKER_01

A person hires a VA, that's a collaboration. Now, they may be independent contracted employee, but still that's a collaboration. When you hire an editor, a videographer, when you hire an event planner, yes, you're paying them, but that is a collaboration because you're giving that person who has the expertise, and please make sure they have the expertise. Okay. There's so much bootleg out there. Please make sure they have the expertise. Yes, you are hiring them to take that off your plate. So you can give them the task, you can have checkpoints where you're telling them this is what I want done by XYZ date, and then they deliver. That's a collaboration. You also, if you're putting on an event, you and I both had our events on the same day in September. We had speakers come in to our events to impart into the people who came. We collaborated with those individuals because they were bringing a piece to the puzzle that we did not have, or either we didn't have the time to put it in there. So you collaborate.

SPEAKER_02

I love it. I love it. So listen, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna run through these and you're gonna tell me some answers

Practical Steps And Where To Get The Book

SPEAKER_02

here. So practical takeaways. Oh, okay. Okay, so if someone listening feels completely overwhelmed right now, what is the first thing you would tell them to do? Tell me their vision. Okay, good. What is one simple change the listeners could make this week to begin reclaiming their time?

SPEAKER_01

Simple look at your tasks that you're doing and simplify them.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. If you sell me received 10 extra hours in your own week, what would you choose to spend then?

SPEAKER_01

If I were able to reclaim 10 more hours in my week, I would start figuring out how I could build my nest egg. Because when I retire, I don't plan on being in the same place for too long. I want to travel.

SPEAKER_02

I'm right with you. Go to Rome, Italy. Yes. All the same. I am right with you here. So, what do you want your readers to walk away with after reading Cut the BS?

SPEAKER_01

I want them, if they read the book, don't skim the book. If you read the book, do the activities, you will walk away with a blueprint that will make your personal and professional life easier. When I say that I position you to reclaim 10 hours, I'm not adding time back into anyone's day because there's only 24 hours in a day, no matter what day you go to. But there are things taking up your time that shouldn't. So when you read this book, you're gonna have a blueprint, you're gonna have the tools necessary to help you navigate in a way that gets you to your end result, and you're not any longer sacrificing yourself.

SPEAKER_02

That's great. I love that. I love it. So finally, Anishika, what is one message you want every high-achieving professional and entrepreneur to remember about their time and about themselves?

SPEAKER_01

Time is the one resource that we don't ever get back. You get to spend it or you get to invest it. And you need to learn how to invest your time because we have been programmed since we were itty beady to spend our time. And those are words that are used. How are you spending your time? What are you spending your time on? Learn how to invest your time.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, time is very precious these days. It is. So tell us how can people get your book and how they can get in touch with you?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, so people can go to minding my business dot vip slash the number 10 H R S, 10 hours, minding my business dot VIP slash. When you go to that site, you're gonna see an image that says, where am I really? You're gonna click on that image, and there is a free tool there that you definitely 125% need to utilize. And then also on that website, you're gonna get access to how to follow me on social media. You're gonna get access to the book, you're gonna get access to t-shirts, all the different things that are in alignment with simplified productivity and reclaiming your time.

SPEAKER_02

I love it. I love it. And actually, when you see it on YouTube, you're gonna see in the back of her head, it has www.minding my business dot vip slash 10 hours. That's right. Yes, so you're gonna send that to me anyway. It's gonna be in the show notes anyway. So you send that to me. I'm gonna put it in the show notes so they can definitely know how to get in touch with you because this was an i listen, I was really enjoying this,

Nishka. So thank you for joining me today and reminding us that productivity isn't simply about doing more, it's about being intentional with our time, energy, and priorities. I especially love the reminder that we are our most powerful asset. We can have goals, businesses, careers, families, and responsibilities. But if we continually sacrifice ourselves trying to manage them all, eventually something has to give. And we don't want to give up our lives, right? So, to everyone listening, here's a question I want you to take with you. If you could reclaim 10 hours of your week, what would you do with them? Think about that. Nishika has taught us a lot of things as far as she's an educator, I tell you, she really taught me a lot of things, especially with the warning signs about my mind steady going as I'm trying to sleep. So I want you to make sure you connect with Nishika. I encourage you to connect with her and check out her book, Cut the BS. Escalate Simple Strategies to Unlock Higher Productivity to Learn Practical Ways to Simplify your productivity and create more room for things that truly matter. Thank you for joining us again, Nishika. Thank you for being on this another episode of Ready Said Collaborate. Remember, collaboration collaboration is the key to success. That's the only way we can be success. Let's work together, right? So until next time, protect your time, be intentional about your priorities, and don't become so busy building your success that you forget to care of the person doing the building. That is us. Thank you again, Nishika. Thank you. Thank you. Till next time. Make sure you now you follow, subscribe, all of that stuff to ReadySet Collab. I keep forgetting to say that, Nishika, when I'm prescribing my fire guys on YouTube. But yeah, no, definitely I have so many episodes to really go to. But this one is really great. Thank you again, Nishica. And tonight.
