Your business can be thriving while your nervous system is screaming. That tension is where Wanda Pearson and guest LaShana West go deep, because a lot of ambitious leaders know how to build results, but they do not know how to stay whole while doing it.

LaShana is the founder of Healing While Building, a business therapist, and a leadership mindset coach who helps high achievers stop shrinking and start leading with grounded confidence. We unpack what “shrinking” really looks like in corporate spaces and entrepreneurship, why impostor syndrome hits some of the most capable people in the room, and how unresolved emotional patterns can show up as physical burnout signals. If you have ever felt successful on paper but stuck in survival mode at home, this conversation will feel uncomfortably familiar in the best way.

We also get practical about moving from hustle culture to wholeness. LaShana breaks down why balance is not the goal, harmony is, and why systems, boundaries, and realistic rhythms matter if you want sustainable success. One line you will not forget: rest is not a reward; it is a requirement. From pausing instead of procrastinating to redefining success as presence, peace, and health, you will walk away with a clear next step you can take today to show up for yourself.

Listen through, then share it with the leader in your life who is carrying too much. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us: what is one boundary you are ready to set this week?

Meet Lashonda West And Big Theme

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to another inspiring episode of ReadySet Collaborate Podcast with Wanda Pearson. Well, collaboration is the key to success. Today we're having a conversation, and so many ambitious leaders, entrepreneurs, and high achievers need to hear how do you keep building your dream without losing yourself in the process? My guest is Lashonda West, founder of Healing While Building, author of Healing While Building, and a business therapist and a leadership mindset coach. Lashana has created a healing-centered community for ambitious people who are ready to grow, lead, and succeed without shrinking themselves, so sacrificing their emotional well-being. Her work challenges the idea that success has come through constant hustle. Instead, she helps leaders address the mindset blocks, survival patterns, and internal struggles that can follow us into our businesses and leadership. Today we're going to talk about healing, entrepreneurship, mindset, burnout, identity, leadership, and what it really means to build from a place of wholeness. Lashana, welcome to ReadySet Collaborate.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you so much.

SPEAKER_01

I am like I've been trying to get this lady on my podcast more since last year. Yeah, it's been a minute. Thank you for your patience. Yeah, no, I know. I appreciate it. We were just talking about it offline about the mindset and burn on and healing. I really am excited to have you on this podcast to really share with the audience of what you do and how you can help them. She was helping me before we got on the podcast, but shey, that's that Scorpio in us, right? Our birthdays are like three days apart. I'm so excited to have you on here. Let me tell you about it. I think I already told said a lot of things about you, but let me say something about mindset, and then we can answer some questions on her bio. Lashonda West is a business therapist, leadership mindset coach, and the creator of resilient. That's her Chicago thing. Resilient, how do you say it? Resilient mindset science. Okay. I was the resilient. Okay, I didn't say it right. That's that Chicago accent I have here. A healing center framework that helps high achievers break through mindset blocks rooted in unsolved trauma so that they can lead, launch, and live from wholeness, not hustle. With a background in clinical counseling over 20 years of experience, Lashana empowers entrepreneurs, coaches, and creatives to regulate their nervous systems, reclaim their confidence, and build friends that reflect their truth. As a founder of Healing While Building, she creates safe spaces for the ambitious ones to rise without shrinking. I love that. Thank you. Thank you so much, Lashana. This is really great. I tell you, I we just have so much to talk about it, but I'm gonna have to have you on the show again. And not a year later. Sooner. Thank you for having for being on the show. I appreciate it. Let me ask you this. Let's

Catalyst Behind Healing While Building

SPEAKER_01

first talk about the woman behind the mission.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

What inspired you to read Healing While Building?

SPEAKER_03

Wow. First of all, thank you for having me. I have been excited and I knew we would connect when the time was right. What made me create Healing While Building is honestly what the catalyst was. I was at an event and I seen a millionaire, a leader, a high performer on stage, leading while bleeding. She basically looked the part, had it all, room full of people, and she started to share about her life, and she started to project on stage. She started to bleed on others on stage. And what it let me know was that if people don't have the skills, it doesn't matter what they look like, who they are, where they come from, how much money they're making, the impact they're making, you still have to skip to have the skill of knowing how to heal while you build. And so in that moment, because my other business is called accountability on demand, and it was just like just so results-driven, accountability, do this, do that. How is the person taking care of themselves in the process of business with birth healing while building? And that's literally giving yourself grace, understanding you can do both in tandem. You don't have to wait until you're quote unquote healed. Because honestly, I don't think there's any such thing of being healed. I think it's an ongoing thing, like a working document, healing. Because right when you think you made it, life starts life in a different way, whether it's the kids, whether it's a significant other, whether it's the job, whether it is yourself. And so being open to the growth really lets you to take the pressure off and enjoy the journey.

SPEAKER_01

I love that. You describe

Shrinking Survival Mode And Impostor Syndrome

SPEAKER_01

your work as creating safe spaces for ambitious people to rise without shrinking. What does shrinking look like with the life of a high achiever?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. The perfect example I can give is an example of a past client where she told me before working with me, she would be in the corner hoping that nobody's seen her, hoping that nobody would call on her. She would go under the radar. And after working with me, she now is assertive in communication, networking, connecting with others, joining other programs, and stepping full into her power. Shrinking looks like someone who is brilliant, someone who has what it takes, but they play small. The other sentiment that comes up for me is you know, that statement don't outshine the master. Or even if you're smarter than your supervisor or you know the answer, you're just gonna sit there, you're not gonna raise your hand, you're just gonna play it safe. That is what shrinking is what it's called, what it looks like.

SPEAKER_01

I agree with that because I tell you, working in corporate for 36 years, and they're taking all the knowledge from me, but at the same time, I should I raise my hand? Should I correct them? I understand exactly what you're saying because then you don't want to get in trouble because then they're anyway. That's another whole story. If you're that's another one.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and the thing about shrinking is when you do it, it kind of embodies in who you are. It'll come off in your parenting, it'll come off in your marriage, at church, in the office, and as a business owner. And so how you do one thing is how you do everything. And so I really specialize in helping people increase their soft skills.

SPEAKER_01

That's great. That really makes a lot of sense. And a lot of that now we need it because everything that's going on in this world, people, they're, I guess they're not confident. A lot of things is happening with them and they don't know what to do, especially now people looking for jobs, right? How do you be confident and be the standout of what you're doing there?

SPEAKER_03

That's right.

SPEAKER_01

Was there a moment in your own journey when you realized that success and healing could not remain separate?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I'll be honest with you. Most recently I had to apologize to my community. I used to say this thing that the hardest thing you've already been through has already happened is peanuts. And I disagree now. After my dad passed in December, and my mom's leg just got amputated a few months ago, and other family members having some mental health stuff going on. I realized everything we've been through was the foundation and for and the rep of us getting our reps in to be ready for the now. We haven't faced the hardest thing. We face it, we'll be able to thrive through it and not just survive through it. As a 43-year-old woman, sometimes I think I know everything, right? And what I love about life, what I love about mindset and mental health, we're learning every single day. And when you're not correct about something or you drop the ball on something, it's very big to take accountability. And that not only freed me, but it freed my community and the people who are connected with me to like, oh wow, she goofed up as well. And I have permission to goof up and not be too hard on myself.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. We're our work, actually, we're our own worst enemies. We think we're not good enough. We're not, we can't do what we God destined us to do. And it's really about letting it, just letting God guide you to what you're doing. And what you're doing, I love what you're doing. I love the healing while building. Thank you. As far as what you're doing. And then your book is called Healing Why Building. What does the phrase mean to you personally?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, honestly, it's a verb. Healing is a verb, building is a verb. Neither comes before the other. You just have to be in flow and decide how you want to operate. But in short, it really means that you can be imper be imperfect. You can have flaws, you can have scars, and you still can teach someone who's at zero and you are at step one. I think a lot of people want things to be perfect before they start. They want things to be just pristine before they put it out there. How will you learn if you don't have the data to look at to see what needs to be worked on, right? Healing is not always about, oh, this traumatic thing happened. Healing could be you literally having imposter syndrome and you realize you belong at the table. You were born to be at the table, and you finally were able to get out of your own way. That's still a part of self-healing.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely, absolutely. And this is why I'm wondering why do so many entrepreneurs and leaders believe they have to wait until they completely heal before they can move forward?

SPEAKER_03

I think that is a unspoken thing. Oh, I can't get the job until I get the degree. I can't do this until I do that. Guess what? There's something called innovation. There's something called authenticity. There's something called proximity of that. Remember the good old Golden Boy Club where you it's about who you knew and you can get that job without. It's the same thing with anything. Let's be resourceful. Let's use what I call resiliency story, not your trauma story, your resiliency story. Let's use our resiliency story, put it in a book, put it in a framework because there's somebody else out there who struggle with the same thing. They don't know how to break through. And now that you've said, you know what, I'm going to be the person to take up space in this area, you now can help others break through on the very thing that you thought was going to be shameful for you.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Absolutely. I love that. Can someone be successful on the outside while still operating from survival mode on the inside?

SPEAKER_03

It can be perceived that way, that they're successful. Anybody that we see online, the glitz, the glam, the cars, the money, the whatever. Oh wow, they're winning. They're successful. I want to be like them. But you don't know what happens when they turn off that camera, when they turn off that highlight reel or they remove that filter. We don't know everyone's walk. We don't know what happens to them when they lay down at night. And that's why I always say, focus on you until the focus is on you.

SPEAKER_01

I love that. I love that. But that is so true. We don't know what's going on at home. And because I tell you, I grew up there with abuse. I'm smiling, everything's fine, but everything's not fine. That's what you said, imposter syndrome. We're making people think everything's fine, everything's okay. It's just something that, and I agree, that's where the healing comes in. But yeah, healing is a consistent thing that you're going through. And I didn't know I knew that God was with me, but when you don't realize it until something really happens, you realize that you gotta let God take the reins. And I'm gonna tell you, I I say this all the time. I said, God woke me up and said, Let go, let God release. I'm thinking, I'm dreaming. All of a sudden he said a real lie, I was sleeping, he said, let go, let God release. And I stood up, I said, What? Having you release whatever's bothering you, whatever you're holding back on, whatever you the healing, the forgiveness, all of that stuff is all part of releasing whatever's holding you back as far as being who you are meant to be. Yes. And what I love about this is actually about that is actually like I say, for his plans he already has for you. But a lot of movie stars have that imposter syndrome, right? Where they think, oh, I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be famous or whatever, but are they happy? And that's to really think, are you happy with what you're doing here?

SPEAKER_03

And if you don't mind, I would love to share a little bit more about imposter syndrome. Yeah. For those who are listening and may not be too familiar with it, it's actually the inner critic telling you that you're not enough, that you don't belong at the table. And at some point, everyone's gonna find out that you are a fraud. When you think of a famous person, of an actor, they're acting. We don't know who they really are, but sometimes that can be infused into who they are to where they don't know themselves. And so while we're on the other side of the TV screen, like, oh my God, I want to be like Beyonce, oh my God, I want to be like whoever. We don't know. So it really impacts those who really are brilliant, who really are awesome, and they're literally their worst critic, their worst enemy looking for validation. And once we validate ourselves, it helps to minimize that imposter syndrome.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, yep. You explained that very well. Thank you for explaining that. Because some people may not know what is imposter syndrome. No, exactly what you just said. What are

Burnout Signs And The Body

SPEAKER_01

some signs that unresolved emotional patterns are affecting the way someone leaves or runs a business?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, honestly, if anyone's ever read the book, The Body Keeps a Score, I'm gonna just name one sign: physical ailments. When you're having headaches, pain, dry mouth, increased hunger, decreased hunger, fatigue, no energy, that is a big red flag, a warning sign that something is not in alignment, something is off. And when we ignore those, that's when more than likely you end up in the hospital, you end up calling out for work, or you end up irritable, and you start to have social conflicts because your body is crying for help. If we can start with the body, because there's so many other things, that will be literally the root of 50% of the symptoms when we're rocking and rolling on a hamster wheel, overwhelmed and burned out, we ignore the body. And that's when we're reactive versus proactive, right? If someone's pre-diabetic or they have high blood pressure, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, that didn't start yesterday. It started slowly. There was warning signs, it wasn't addressed, and now it's like red alert. And we just have to get ahead of it at an early time.

SPEAKER_01

That's so true. That's so true. And I tell you, yeah, are you talking about me?

SPEAKER_03

I'm talking about myself, okay? That's why these conversations are so important because they're reminders about what we said we were gonna do.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes, absolutely, absolutely. Let's

Hustle Versus Wholeness Rest And Boundaries

SPEAKER_01

talk about from hustle to wholeness. You talk about building wholeness rather than hustle. What is the difference?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so I used to romanticize hustle. Oh, I'm hustling, I'm rocking and rolling. Well, Shauna, I see you everywhere. And I thought that was a compliment. You can be everywhere, but it doesn't mean you are everywhere, right? When it comes to systems, when it comes to softwares, when it comes to duplicating yourself, you have to do that so you're not hustling, because hustling is not sustainable. You may have a hustle period, you're launching a book, or you're launching a coaching program and you're in hustle period. If that is your long-term goal, it's not sustainable, it's not realistic. And so the wholeness piece is a holistic approach, mind, body, spirit, wealth, social, emotional. And it's hard to make sure you pinpoint every single thing. But bottom line, we go back to the wellness and to the physical. How do you feel? Like when you lay down at night, are you happy? A lot of times we get into business from hustle and we try to keep it up, and we can't, we will burn out. And so, what happens to the clients? What happens to all the things that you've generated while hustling? And so if you go in with a healthy medium, because I don't believe in balance, I used to say balance above everything. I had a platform called Bay, balance above everything, and I realized there's no such thing as balance. There's a such thing as harmony. Because your lifestyle, my lifestyle, Kenneth's lifestyle, Melissa's lifestyle, and I'm making these names up. Everybody has a different kind of lifestyle. Somebody might be an early bird, and if I'm not an early bird, that doesn't mean I'm lazy because I'm probably up burning the midnight oil at midnight, one, two, or three, while the early birds are knocked out going to sleep. Again, the focus on you until the focus is on you. We got to figure out what is our recipe, what is our regimen, and work our own regimen versus looking at everyone else.

SPEAKER_01

I love that. That's a Scorpio nuts because you're talking about that. I'm up, I get more done at midnight or one or two o'clock in the morning, then and then I sleep in a little bit.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't do early mornings. I told my husband, you gonna do it early morning.

SPEAKER_03

I was up till 2 a.m. I slept till nine.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly, exactly.

SPEAKER_03

But it feels like staff, had a slow morning. Yeah, why would I leave corporate to create another confined corporate for myself? No, I'm gonna enjoy the flexibility. Now, I'm probably working more than eight hours, right? Because I consider this working. If I'm serving, I'm on a podcast, I'm connecting with you, your community, my community, that's working. That's not me just shooting the breeze. And so I think we just gotta be intentional and strategic about our time and what we do.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. And just like you said, when I left corporate, yeah, I'm not doing no early morning. When I started being I, I said, nope, no early morning, no seven o'clock in the morning. I'm not, why would I get up and do that? We're doing what we want to do. We can actually navigate what time we want to start, what time we want to end. Let's get to show. Well, I tell you, I'm gonna have to have you back on my show here. What is one mindset shift that can help someone pursue success without sacrificing peace?

SPEAKER_03

Sure, I think I froze, but can you hear me? I can hear you. Awesome. I wish I was a better face. Anyways, it'll change in a minute. There we go. Can you ask that again?

SPEAKER_01

Yes. What is one mindset shift that can help someone pursue success without sacrificing their peace?

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Understanding that rest is not a reward, it is a requirement, and we cannot beat ourselves up when we rest. Oh my god, I took a nap. Congratulations. You needed a nap. Or if you want to take some time for yourself, maybe have a mom guilt. Or a client emails or texts you and you don't text back immediately, so it's lingering in your head that you weren't responsive enough. And I think that we create these constraints and we can disable them as well, right? It's so interesting when I send an email and I get an immediate response. Hey, thanks for reaching out. We'll respond in 24 hours. I'm like, oh my God, I need to do that because when I get an email, I'm trying to respond really fast. No, yeah. Tell them you'll respond in 24 hours. Set up that automation.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

When you've been praised for quickly being quick and being on top of things, you kind of embody that, and then that can create a monster that you can't keep up with.

SPEAKER_01

Burnouts.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Vacate and burnout.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because I know I got three emails, and I'm so far behind, especially when you take a vacation. That's even worse.

Confident Leadership Book And Grief

SPEAKER_01

All right, let's talk about leadership identity and confidence. What does it look like to lead with confidence by still giving yourself permission to be human?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, that's a great question. And I'll be honest with you, it's different for everybody. There's quiet confidence, there is assertive confidence, and there's all the in-between. My question is when you walk away from the dynamic, how do you feel? We know when we're shrinking. We know when we didn't give it our all. We know when we bit our tongue, we know when we did too much. Because confidence can also turn into an ego monster, too, right? So it is what I call healthy suspicion about where to navigate it depending on where who you're talking to. Because I'll be honest with you, Miss Rhonda. My demeanor is way different with you than past podcasts that I've been on. I'm adapting and I am kind of mirroring your energy and individualizing how I'm communicating. So, in short, confidence takes emotional intelligence. Because if you're not using your emotional intelligence, you'll use a blanket approach and then you will walk away from the conversation feeling weird because you weren't your authentic self. I hope that answers your question.

SPEAKER_01

Absolutely. Absolutely. And Shirley, I call you back. I'm sorry. And I I heard do not disturb one. It happened. Yes, no, that was great. That was a great answer. I appreciate that. So now let's talk about the book, purpose and final tech and takeaways. What do you hope readers experience when they open Healing While Building?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, just being transparent, Healing While Building was supposed to come out last year. And I made a decision to not just rush and put something out. And I'm so glad that I paused. I actually did some comp some content around this that pausing is not a distraction. Where I would be remiss if I did not infuse that into my book. So it's really a roadmap to self-awareness, accountability, identifying your own gifts and having the permission, your self-permission to become the person you want to become. And I'm infusing my own frameworks, my resiliency story, myself, and teaching how you can create your resiliency story too in the book of Healing While Building. And I already know I'm going to have to have a sequel or part two because sometimes we want to be logical and just give the steps, but I don't want to just do it because that's the thing. I want to really individualize my approach. And so that's what I'm working on right now.

SPEAKER_01

That's awesome. That's awesome. I love it. So who do you have in your heart when you wrote this book?

SPEAKER_03

Oh my goodness. Definitely my mom and definitely my daughter. And when I started writing the book, my dad was still alive. And now he has passed. So I will be sharing the journey of grief and how it is not a roadmap or a rule book. It's a process. And I'm not a grief expert, but I'm going to give a snapshot into my journey of the grieving process.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's that is so true. I know I when I went through with my dad, the same thing. It's hard. It's like daddy's a little girl, right? It's hard to really get over it. It takes time as well. So,

Pausing Redefining Success And Legacy

SPEAKER_01

what would you say to a person who is building something meaningful is exhausted from always having to be the strong one?

SPEAKER_03

And I know that's a really good question. And that can relate to a lot of women. We wear the superwoman cape on our back like it's it's a flex. We wear it on our chest like a badge of honor. And I will say it's okay to not be okay. It's okay to ask for help. And it's okay to take a pause because if you don't, nobody's coming to save you. And I think a lot of times we want to finish what we started. There's a difference between procrastination and pausing. Procrastination is avoidance. Pausing is intentionality in taking care of yourself. And so you have to find the happy medium and make sure not to enable.

SPEAKER_01

That's good. That's that's a good answer. What does success look to you now? Look like for you now.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, honestly, success looks like resting. I have been on a hamster wheel. I have been working since I was 13 years old, lying on applications. I have gone from being a single mom to getting my bachelor's to two weeks later, starting a master's program, climbing the corporate America ladder. And what I realize is that there's more to life than meeting milestones. Success to me is resting. It is smelling the flowers instead of just looking at them and seeing them wilt. It is pausing and taking time for myself and my family and not being able to be upset about it, but admiring my ability to take a pause. This answer would have been way different six months ago.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's where I'm at right now. I love it. I tell you, we got so much in common because that's exactly what I was is rest. Yeah, it really is. It really is. And then my husband and I said, You gotta rest, you gotta do this. I said, Yeah, but I gotta do this, I gotta do this. Like that hamster will with steady going around trying to get things done. What your legacy, what legacy do you hope to build with your healing while building creates?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, healing while building honesty, honestly, is gonna be the epitome of releasing, releasing expectations, releasing negative patterns that you picked up from childhood and embracing flaws, quirks, and gifts and all. My goal is for us to have an institute. Right now, it is a brand, but I want to have a healing while building institute where you come, you learn virtually. You also have an evidence-based learning as well as in person. That's kind of what it's going to elevate and evolve to. But I am taking things one day at a time and just enjoying the journey as we build it.

SPEAKER_01

I love it. I love it.

Show Up Challenge And Ways To Connect

SPEAKER_01

If I listen to take one action today to begin healing while building, what would you tell them to do?

SPEAKER_03

I would say show up for yourself. This month in the Healing While Building community, school community, and Facebook community, we have a show up September challenge. This is gonna lead us into our Healing While Building Summit, which is in Atlanta, Georgia, November 6th, 7th, and 8th. Show up for yourself. I'm not gonna tell you how, because we know when we're shrinking. We know when we're avoiding. Show up for yourself. That could be drinking more water. It could be saying no, setting boundaries. It could be turning on your camera and making your first piece of content. It could be applying for a different job because of one you have is not serving you. Whatever it is, show up for yourself because we don't know when it's time for us to go to the next dimension to meet God, whoever it is that you believe in. We don't know when that happens. And so they say the richest place in the world is the graveyard. So many dreams, so many gifts that were not birthed. And I don't want that to be us.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, yes. Perfect, perfect answer. That is so true. That is so true. Tell us where we can get in touch with you and what are your next. I know you said you're uh you're you're having your healing white building conference. Tell us what's going on, how they can get in touch with you and how they can what you're doing next.

SPEAKER_03

Sure. So Healing War Building Summit again is November 6th, 7th, and 8th in Atlanta, Georgia. Also have a multi-purpose content studio called Pop Up and Create. So if you ever want to have small, intimate events, workshops, brunches, masterminds, VIP days for your clients, our space is perfect for that. And then lastly, I am a business therapist and mindset coach. So if you need support with breaking through the blocks that are keeping you stuck so you can get clear and make more cash flow, I'm your girl. You can just connect with me on Instagram and we can chat.

That's awesome. Thank you so much, Lashana. I was gonna tell them about the pop-up and create. I tell you, I've been there, I created content there and we're gonna actually have something there on the 27th, I think of the day. So, yes, it is a great space, y'all. If you're in Atlanta, make sure you reach out to Lashana West. I am so excited to have you on this podcast. I want to thank you. You are such an honest, empowering, necessary conversation. Thank you. I appreciate that. Oh, absolutely, absolutely. Because you reminded us that we do not have to choose between healing and achievement. We can pursue the vision, grow the business, lead with excellence, and still make room to care for the person doing all that we're building. That's right. To our listeners, I encourage you to connect with Lashana West, explore healing while building, and check out her book, Healing While Building, and that's coming out soon. Lashana?
