Your Nervous System Isn’t Broken

Your Nervous System Isn’t Broken. It’s Trying to Protect You

There’s a phrase floating around social media lately that sounds deceptively simple: “Reset your nervous system.”

It’s usually paired with calming music, soft lighting, somebody dry-brushing their elbows in a meadow, and the implication that if you just breathe correctly for 47 seconds, your brain will stop screaming into the void.

If only.

In Episode 11 of This Way In, Amy and therapist Brittney Baxter Dameron unpack what’s really happening inside our bodies when stress takes over and why the idea of a total “reset” may not actually be the goal.

Your nervous system is not a broken appliance that needs rebooting. It’s your body’s survival system. It’s constantly scanning for danger, reacting to stress, and trying to keep you alive. The problem is that modern life often keeps that system switched on far longer than it was designed for. We’re no longer just outrunning bears. We’re navigating burnout, grief, financial stress, scary headlines, family responsibilities, social pressure, chronic uncertainty, and the emotional equivalent of having 47 browser tabs open while one of them plays haunted carnival music.

This episode explores the difference between real and perceived threats, the role cortisol plays in chronic stress, and why calming your body physically is often the first step toward calming your mind emotionally.

Amy and Brittney also share practical, real-world nervous system reprieves that actually help, including:

  • breathing exercises
  • guided sleep meditations
  • cozy sensory environments
  • binaural beats
  • creative activities
  • movement and physical exertion
  • sleep hygiene
  • comforting routines and rituals

And importantly, they talk honestly about the fact that sometimes our stress responses make sense. Sometimes the world is overwhelming. Sometimes anxiety is not irrational. The goal is not to become emotionally numb. The goal is to create moments of safety, rest, and regulation so your body doesn’t stay trapped in survival mode 24/7.

Think of it less like “fixing yourself” and more like letting your nervous system unclench its tiny metaphorical fists for a little while.

Which, frankly, sounds healthier than trying to become a human lava lamp on Instagram anyway.
