FROM RELIGION TO RELATIONSHIP
One of the most powerful parts of my conversation with Pastor Phill was hearing his journey.
He grew up in a legalistic church environment where faith felt more like performance than relationship.
Like many of us, he wrestled with doubt, frustration, and eventually rebellion.
But even in that season, God never stopped pursuing him.
What stood out to me is this truth:
Faith was never meant to be about rules—it was always meant to be about relationship with Jesus.
CALLED TO SET CAPTIVES FREE
I loved hearing how Phill and his wife Stephanie felt called to plant a church with a mission to “set captives free.”
That calling became Ransom Church in Sioux Falls in 2009.
Over time, that vision expanded into the Awaken Church Planting Network, helping plant multiple churches focused on spreading the Gospel.
It’s a reminder that when God gives vision, it often grows far beyond what we first imagine.
One of the most challenging questions from our conversation was this:
Am I following Jesus as Lord… or just benefiting from Him?
I think many of us want the comfort of faith:
- peace
- forgiveness
- blessing
- community
But struggle with full surrender.
Pastor Phill reminded us that real discipleship means Jesus leads every part of our lives—not just the parts we’re comfortable giving Him.
WHY GRACE IS SO HARD
Grace sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to receive.
I’ve noticed that many of us try to earn what God has already freely given.
But grace challenges everything we naturally believe about worth and performance.
It reminds us:
We are not accepted because of what we do, but because of what Jesus has already done.
🌱 HOPE FOR A NEW GENERATION
One thing that encouraged me in this conversation was Phill’s hope for the next generation.
Even in a complicated cultural moment, he sees a hunger for something real.
People are asking deeper questions:
- Is faith actually real?
- Is Jesus enough?
- Is there more than religion?
That hunger is an open door for authentic Christianity.
🕊 SPIRITUAL RHYTHMS THAT KEEP FAITH ALIVE
Faith doesn’t stay strong by accident—it’s sustained intentionally.
Some of the rhythms we talked about include:
- Prayer
- Scripture
- Worship
- Community
- Consistency
These are simple, but they anchor us when life feels overwhelming.
Final Thoughts
What I keep coming back to after this conversation is simple:
Jesus never invited us to admire Him.
He invited us to follow Him.
And that invitation still stands today—not as a religion to observe, but a relationship to live.
