Trading Comfort for Calling: What Kyle Gabhart’s Journey Taught Me About Purpose

Trading Comfort for Calling: What Kyle Gabhart’s Journey Taught Me About Purpose

Are we choosing comfort—or becoming who we were created to be?

In this episode of Sheila’s Take, I sat down with Kyle Gabhart for a conversation that challenged me in the best way.

At just 19 years old, Kyle left Texas and traveled to Southern Africa—a decision that would reshape how he viewed purpose, faith, risk, and the kind of life he wanted to build.

What I appreciated most about this conversation is that it wasn’t simply about travel.

It was about what happens when we stop waiting for certainty and begin responding to calling.

Together, we talked about:

• Leaving comfort zones to pursue growth
• Discovering purpose through discomfort
• Building a meaningful legacy
• Living with humility and intention
• Kyle’s upcoming book, The Canteen
• Creating a life aligned with faith and calling

Leaving What’s Familiar

One of the most memorable parts of this conversation was hearing Kyle describe leaving behind everything familiar.

At an age when most people are settling into routines and expectations, he chose something uncertain.

Southern Africa became more than a destination.

It became an invitation to see life differently.

Listening to Kyle reminded me that growth often begins where predictability ends.

What Another Culture Can Teach You

Kyle shared something that stayed with me:

When we step outside what’s familiar, we start separating what truly matters from what we’ve simply inherited.

That perspective shift changed how he viewed faith, success, purpose, and identity.

Some of the biggest lessons from his experience:

• Perspective changes everything
• Faith grows in uncertainty
• Calling often appears through discomfort

That idea challenged me because so many of us wait to feel ready before we move.

But purpose rarely arrives wrapped in certainty.

The Canteen: Collecting Wisdom Along the Journey

The Canteen: What Sustains You Along the Way

We also talked about Kyle’s upcoming book, The Canteen.

I loved the metaphor behind it.

A canteen carries what sustains you during difficult journeys.

Kyle explained that our experiences, values, faith, and lessons become the things that sustain us—and eventually allow us to help others.

That made me stop and ask:

What am I collecting in my own canteen?

And would it sustain someone else?

Building a Legacy That Actually Matters

One of my favorite moments from our conversation came when we talked about legacy.

Kyle challenged the idea that legacy is about accomplishments.

Instead, he described legacy as influence.

Not what you leave.

But who you leave.

That perspective shifts success from achievement to impact.

It reminds us that everyday choices shape more than our own lives.

Practical Ways to Trade Comfort for Calling

If this conversation inspired you, here are a few questions to reflect on:

  1. Where am I choosing comfort over growth?
  2. What small risk have I been avoiding?
  3. Who supports my purpose instead of my comfort?
  4. What experience could expand my perspective?
  5. What am I collecting that will sustain me later?

Purpose doesn’t always require dramatic change.

Sometimes it starts with one uncomfortable step.

The Integration of Life's Dimensions

Another thing I appreciated about Kyle’s perspective was his belief that life doesn’t need to be compartmentalized.

Faith.

Work.

Marriage.

Calling.

They all belong together.

When purpose becomes integrated instead of separated, life begins to feel more authentic.

Final Thoughts

One idea stayed with me long after we finished recording:

Comfort is not the enemy of calling.

But comfort can become its substitute.

That doesn’t mean everyone needs to move across the world.

But it may mean asking:

What am I avoiding because it feels uncomfortable?

And what might happen if I trusted God enough to take one step forward?
