Listener Reviews

Linda Perry, thumbs down.
I’ve loved every episode so far, but Linda Perry... what an ego. I couldn’t take it.
Love the pod, dislike the guests?
A few of the guests REALLY like themselves... amazing pod!
Greendale
Hey ,Greendale is Neil’s magnum opus!!!How could you not talk about his most important protest song? David should watch Live from Vicar street which has Solo Young performing and I think writing the stories...Love the podcast! Peace
YESYESYES
This is so good on so many levels. I’m psyched to listen to every episode. Thank to you and your team🤘🤘
Can be amazing!
Malcolm Gladwell is a thoroughly entertaining host, and I love the combination of his braininess with the artists’ creativity. That said, the show is hit or miss. The two most recent episodes (Love Junkies and Pentatonix) were incredible. Other recent ones were eye-rollingly banal or so political they no longer qualified as musical interviews. About half the episodes are good, but they’re so good they merit four stars on their own!
Great insight into music biz
Prefer when Gladwell is on the podcast, exception being Ric Rubin.
This podcast is amazing!
I love the production and the interviews are great to listen to. Look forward to hearing more!
I LOVE this podcast
I’ve always only been a casual music listener. But this podcast is a JOY! So fun to listen to and I’ve learned tons. I could listen to Rick Rubin read the dictionary and Malcolm has a way of making everything f fascinating. Though I’d love to hear more episodes with the two of them together. Either just talking about music or Rick’s career or with other artists! Already looking forward to the next season!
Love Junkies
Where can I download My Age??? What an incredible song. Can’t find it anywhere.
Great for songwriters and recordists
Getting a peek in the brains of great producers and songwriters is both a treat and professionally thought-provoking. Thanks, Broken Record!
Don’t Listen to Love Junkies episode!!
Unless, that is, you want to CRY for two days. The first song they break down for us, “My Age”, is absolutely undeniable and will sucker punch your emotions instantly. I’m a 39 year old man, ad literally had to pull over I cried so hard. Amazing episode!!
Love the Love Junkies!
Can we please get a live mic in the room every time the Love Junkies come together?! That was fabulous!
My age
Where in the world do you find the song “my age” from episode 5 of season 2? It’s fantastic, but nothing about it is on the web or any streaming service.
Whoa
I'm ten minutes into the nile rogers episode and he's playing the guitar while he's describing the songwriting process...this is mind-blowing...
Amazing fun
This podcast does an awesome job conveying the process of writing music and the way it makes people feel. Awesome!
Mary Gauthier Synopsis Word Usage Issue
“Mary Gauthier is one of the most unique ...” is just plain old bad English. I didn’t expect to see this kind of mistake on a podcast from an educated author.
Don’t compare to Revisionist History
I could listen to Malcolm Gladwell read or speak about anything. I’d listen to him read Craigslist’s ads that’s how much of a fan I am. Broken Record is made great because he’s so excited about the music and the work that’s gone into creating it. It’s definitely a work of personal love and listening to Rick Rubin about music is always enlightening. But please don’t compare it to Revisionist History. Broken Record highlights the genius of others. Revisionist History highlights Malcolm Gladwell’s personal genius, so it’s not a fair comparison.
Where are the women?
One female voice in 8 episodes? Dang.
Season 2 off to a GREAT start
The Questlove interview may be the best one yet. The Obama story in the second episode - pure gold. What a mind!
Everything I Love About Music
Rick Rubin shaped an entire generation of music. I jumped at the chance to hear the stories behind some of the best albums produced came into fruition. Gladwell strikes a balance between asking open ended questions, perusing the details that I am hoping to hear, guiding conversations, and when to just let the magic unfold by following the interviewees down unexpected rabbit holes. The best part of this show has been the exposure to incredible music that I didn’t know about before.
Yay Season 2!
I’m so excited this podcast is coming back!
Intellect and heart
Not often have I heard a host wed intellect and heart-matters with such grace. Two episodes in and thought Rick Ruben would be hard to too. Episode two is one I’ll be replaying like a favorite album. Meeting these three epic song writers and hearing the intimacy between them tested me up multiple times. Malcolm, I’ll follow you anyway. There’s nothing like Broken Record for music, conversation and a social spin on the country in which we live.
Great stuff
Loved the episode about Black Metal.
Fella like you’re sitting in the room
You can feel Uber-fan Gladwell’s love of music and the story behind the music in these podcast interviews. Rick Rubin’s presence and input is also exciting to hear. Wish he’d pop up more in the podcast. Unlike some of the other reviewers, not knowing who is talking at all times makes the listener feel like s/he’s right there in the room as opposed to being outside of the convo.
