Stewardship of your body matters, but it shouldn’t overshadow all other gifts and stewardship principles—in fact, there’s no direct Biblical command to be a “good steward” of your body above all else.
-
The more you step into your purpose and gifting, the more you’ll find peace with your body image.

Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hey there, Heather Creekmoor here. I'm so glad you're back for another episode in our Waiting for Weight Loss series. Today we're on our third exhale. If you've been counting, and this exhale is about establishing your purpose? Did you know you were created on purpose for a purpose and that purpose doesn't start when you hit your goal weight? Did you know you were created on purpose for a purpose? So this is a little embarrassing to admit, but honestly, I've been confused about this for a long time. Like I always felt like part of my purpose was to make my body look better. I mean, I could even christianize it for you. I could tell you that it was part of my purpose as a Christian to look good so that others would be attracted to Jesus through me. Of course, I paid no attention to the truth that when Jesus came to earth, he chose a body that wasn't good looking. According to the Book of Isaiah, he didn't rely on or need physical beauty to accomplish his ministry. So I'm not sure why I believe the lie that I couldn't accomplish my purpose for him unless I had a certain look or a certain body, But I did kind of believe that it was up to me to get the look right so then he could use me. But that was bad theology. God knew exactly what his plan was for me when he created my body, and this has been a theological stumbling block for me over the years. Like somehow I believe my body was like an accident or something that there was like an assembly line of souls being squirted into bodies and then dropped to Earth. And God was surprised that I got the body with the short fingers and the big thighs, as if he was sitting in Heaven saying, what a shame, What a shame. I had such great plans for her, But she's gonna have to fix those thighs if those plans are ever gonna happen. I mean, who's gonna marry her? Listen to her? Want to spend time with her until she gets that thigh size under control. Now let's get real, friend, You can listen, you can laugh like you know that's not sound, you know that's not what God is really saying. And yet have you believed these same things? Have you had similar thoughts? Maybe you didn't directly attribute them to God, But have you felt like you were letting God down until you fixed your body? Now? I talk about this a lot in my forty Day Body Image Workbook. I sometimes hate to even call it a workbook because it reads just like a regular book, but there are places in it for you to process and exercises for you to go through. But in this book, I talk about the reality that God gave you your body, your exact body, to reveal part of your purpose. Your body isn't stopping you from your purpose. He knew exactly what he was doing when he knits you together in your mother's womb. So knitting is very intentional. I don't knit, but I do know someone who does. And it's not like pasting paper craft like just haphazard kind of crafting. Like if you miss a stitch and knitting, what do you do. You go back, you undo the stitches, you take the stitch out, you do it again. So it's correct, friend, God didn't mess up when he knit you together. Now, there's two things that always come up here. The one is this, I believe that God did knit me together, but then I messed it up. I ruined his good creation, and so his plan is thwarted, like I messed it all up. Oh friend, you don't have that much power. If God can fixed your biggest problem in your life, which is your problem with sin that was once going to separate you from him for eternity, if he can fix that, he can certainly still use you. Even if you've been horror or bad or mean to your physical body. It's okay. There's forgiveness in him, there's grace in him after we repent and confess. He's not mad at you for that. He's not punishing you for that, and he's not dumbfounded as to what to do with you next. He's not given up. He's also not waiting for you to get your body right before he can use you. In fact, I think that's the trick of the enemy that keeps us focused on body change instead of keeping us focused on why God gave us bodies in the first place. You see, we miss out on using our bodies for what God intended them for, and we get so focused on getting our bodies ready, ready to be used that it's just a distraction. Like the only biblical example I can think of if someone who needed time to prepare her physical body, her appearance for what she was going to be used for is esther right. She was recruited into the King's harem, and then she had to spend a whole year getting beauty treatments why so that she could seduce the king and in turn save the Jewish people. Now, if God is calling you to something like that, okay, I give you a pass. Maybe you do have to spend some time focused on your body so that you can complete your calling. But friend, that doesn't apply to ninety nine percent of us. There's not a size requirement on starting a Bible study in your home. There's not a weight requirement for serving in the nursery at church. I think churches should have greeters of every color, body shape, and size. Why because I want anyone who's visiting the church to feel comfortable there and know they're welcomed. The second pushback of here a lot comes up, and we talk about getting my body right before I pursue God's purpose, and that topic is stewardship. Now, I don't want to spend too much time on this topic right now, but let me give you the short version. Your life's purpose is not to be a good steward of your body. Your life's purpose is not to be a good steward of your body. Like okay, now hear me, Yes, your body is something you should treat as a good gift and steward well, just like your money, just like your time, just like your home, just like all the other good gifts that you've been given. But we get subtly caught up into this idea that stewardship is God's most important command. And frankly, friend, search your Bible, there's like absolutely no scripture to support that. Like I would say, it's an anti biblical concept that stewardship is God's most important command. Like, there's not even a Bible verse that directly tells us to be a good steward of our bodies. This is just a concept that we've extrapolated because our bodies are the instruments through which we worship God, and our bodies are good gifts from Him. But there's not a verse for it. Now, there are hundreds and hundreds of verses on how to steward our money well, but there's not one direct verse on how to care for your body. We have verses that tell us principles around caring for our bodies, but there's no direct commands aside from honoring God with our bodies. That's the principle. And when women come to me obsessed over not being a good steward of their body, I often ask, Okay, well, do you stay up late at night worrying about how you're stewarding your money? You're stressing all day long about how you're stewarding your time. Do you fret day and night about whether or not you're steward and your gifts? Well, I mean from there's like parables on that principle. The point is not that we shouldn't steward our bodies. Well, that's not what I'm saying. But we can't pull out this one principle and put it ahead of all the others. It's not biblical. Yes, we do need our bodies to do all the things that God has called us too, but most of our health monitoring like this is all brand new. People as recent as one hundred years ago had no idea how much they waited unless they went to the doctor's office. They didn't know if they had blood pressure problems or low thyroid or any of these things. They just lived. They didn't try to troubleshoot all their diagnoses to try to live longer. They didn't even know that was a thing. So today's exhale is this. God's purpose for your life doesn't start when you reach your goal. Wait, he has something for you to do right now today. What is he asking you to do that perhaps you've put off until you got things under control with your body. Here's what I want to do right now. Breathe in all the stress and pressure that you've been holding. Is you try to change so that you can What is it you're trying to change for? What is it He's called you to do that you've been putting off? In hell? One more time for me, and then I want you to exhale with this statement. God has something for me to do right now today. I don't have to wait. God has something for me to do right now today. I don't have to wait. His purpose and his plan for your life are good. And what I find is the more you start working in your purpose and gifting, the better you'll feel about your body. You can actually begin to see how and why He made you, and you can see how his intention was for your body to be used as an instrument for him. So tell me what stuck out to you today. Join the conversation in the community, and let's talk about all the things that we've put off as we've waited for weight loss.
