Crown and Controversy: Kate Middleton

01 Hello and welcome to Palace Intrigue. I am your host, Mark Francis. Tom Cruise tried to introduce William and Catherine to Scientology, according to a claim in Rob Shooter's very, very gossipy, naughty but nice newsletter. Shooter quotes unnamed sources who say the actor's enthusiasm for the religion extends to the future king and queen. The piece gives no date or details of an actual approach to the couple. One of the unnamed sources said, Tom doesn't think he's recruiting people. He thinks he's saving them. He genuinely believes Scientology transformed his life, and he wants everyone he admires to experience that same transformation. According to another unnamed source quoted by Shooter, Tom thinks William and Catherine are extraordinary people. He believes Scientology could offer them something valuable, but he also understands the enormous influence they have. Having royalty associated with Scientology would be a tremendous coup. Prince Harry reportedly believes Prince William is deliberately cultivating relationships with Hollywood celebrities to undermine him.

08 An unnamed source tells Closer that William enjoys meeting celebrities despite not spending nearly as much time in California as Harry. William hasn't spent the time in California the way Harry has, but that doesn't mean he can't cultivate relationships with showbiz types. William isn't claiming these stars are his best friends, but the relationships are genuine. Harry is convinced his brother wants to infiltrate the same Hollywood circles that he and Meghan have been trying to establish themselves in so that he can make life uncomfortable for them. Prince William's relaxed appearance on The Graham Norton Show has prompted royal commentators to suggest that he is developing the approachable public image once associated with Harry. During a YouTube discussion, one commentator described William as Such a relatable guy, with the panel suggesting that he now seemed like the brother people could imagine joining for a beer. Mike Tindall reportedly tried to bring William and Harry together by inviting them to dinner or drinks, hoping an informal meeting might help repair the relationship. Writing in Woman and Home, Royal Editor Emily Andrews said, It came to naught, and Mike recently made a quip about a long time ago when Harry was fun, perhaps implying how he feels about the Duke now. William and Prince George enjoyed a father-son trip to Barcelona to watch their beloved Aston Villa take on the Spanish giants in the Champions League. Before kick-off, William and George were presented with the Barcelona jerseys by the club's president, Joan Laporta. Unfortunately for the Royal Villa supporters, the evening did not go according to plan. William and George were photographed looking increasingly

39 frustrated as the team struggled against the Spanish side. Kate is reportedly worried that King Charles and Prince William are putting too much pressure on Prince George as they prepare him for his future role as king. According to Closer, the Prince of Wales wants her 13-year-old son to understand his royal responsibilities, but is concerned that preparations for his future could come at the expense of his childhood. An unnamed source told Closer, Kate has been counting the days until George is back from school, she misses him terribly, and can't wait to welcome him home and spoil him. But according to the report, William sees the school break as an opportunity to spend more time preparing George for his eventual responsibilities. One source claimed, William's very keen to use his time with his son to really dig into some important preparations. He's been gradually teaching George about his future role for years. But now that King Charles is handing more responsibility to William, there's a bigger sense of urgency to it all. The report suggests that Kate and William may have different priorities when it comes to balancing George's royal education with William and Kate release photographs of their children on their own terms to help protect them from the press attention William experienced growing up, according to royal author Ingrid Seward. Writing in her book, Catherine and Diana, Seward describes an arrangement intended to give the public opportunities to see George, Charlotte and Louis while preserving their privacy between appearances. In return for photographers allowing the children a measure of privacy, the Waleses have ensured that images of George,

10 Charlotte and Louis are released on a regular, predictable basis, but always on their terms, and always when and how Catherine chooses to showcase them. Catherine controls the lens herself, or whatever professional she might allow. The resultant photographs are her way of presenting the children as she wants them to be seen, unthreatened by the circus that once engulfed their father. Seward also sees a purpose in the relaxed clothes and informal settings chosen for some royal family pictures. Rather than presenting the children solely through formal royal occasions, those photographs offer what she calls a reminder that these are small children, not public property. Actor Will Mellor has recalled Prince William stepping in to stop a nightclub fight after someone allegedly knocked him off his crutches. Speaking on the Happy Place podcast... The two pints of lager and a packet of crisps. Starr said he had initially been reluctant to go out because he was injured and taking medication, but eventually accepted a friend's invitation. Mellor said, I was in there having a good night and Prince William was in there. He just happened to be in there and I went for a wee and Prince William was stood next to me and he went, all right, well, and I went, oh, he knows my name. It was like madness.

22 Two pints fan. Anyway, the night went on, and I had a few more drinks, and I went, I'm going to the dance floor on me crutches. I was throwing a few shapes, and there were quite a few what I call upper-class posh people in there all dancing, and they thought it was funny to shoulder barge me off my crutches and laugh at me, basically. Melisande reacted by confronting one of the men, only to discover that William was attempting to pull him away, and I didn't find that funny, so once I got up, I dived onto this lad, and he's on the floor, and I'm fighting with this lad on the floor, and then I've got these hands on my shoulders picking me up, and I'm sort of doing what I'm doing, and then I hear this person go, leave it, Will, he's not worth it, and it was Prince William. According to Mellor, William kept his hands on his shoulders and tried to calm him down.

03 He was looking at me in the eye, going, leave it, Will, he's not worth it, and I'm going, he's knocked me off my crutches, and I'm going mad. Mellor said the Prince's security team then intervened and removed the two men involved. And then I'm going, tell them, William, it's not my fault, they pushed me over. Anyway, they're carrying me out, and I'm still shouting, William, tell them it wasn't my fault, and he's going, It's all right, don't worry about it. The funny thing is I go home and my mate calls me and goes, I'll never forget seeing Prince William with his hands on your shoulders going, Leave it, Will. It's not worth it. Like he was one of your mates. More Palace in just a moment. Actress Sally Lindsay, best known for playing Shelley Unwin on Coronation Street, described the Prince of Wales as lovely after meeting him during her investiture ceremony. Lindsay spoke to Woman magazine about the experience and revealed that William surprised her with his knowledge of her career. She said, The Prince of Wales was lovely.

56 He knew exactly who I was and what I'd done. He asked me when I left Coronation Street. I said, 21 years ago. And he replied, Oh God, I feel so old. I joked, you feel old? It was a special day. Lindsay appeared on Coronation Street between 2001 and 2006 and has since starred in the Madame Blanc mysteries and still open all hours. She received her MBE in recognition of her contributions to the entertainment industry. But the actress revealed that when the official letter announcing her honour arrived shortly before Christmas last year, she initially feared she was being taken to court over a parking ticket. She explained, Before it arrived... I'd been going back and forth about a parking fine. I'd paid for my parking, but they thought I hadn't and it was all about the principal.

42 So when the letter arrived, it was dead official with a stamp on the front. And my first thought was, oh God, they are taking me to court. They've dropped the parking fine now because we had the evidence, but that is what my first thought was. I was in shock. This was out of my comfort zone. And I thought, what have I done? But then you think, oh, well, I've been doing it for 30 years. And so I think I've got it. The actress also praises the staff at Windsor Castle and dedicated her award to Working Class Performers. who she says remain underrepresented in the entertainment industry. This evening, the King, Queen and other family members will attend the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. This year's festival-themed Places of Remembrance will explore the personal significance of locations associated with those who have died. It will also share accounts from people who served in Bosnia, the Gulf War and the Iraq War, drawing on letters sent home to loved ones. And there you have it.
