00:00:19.199 --> 00:00:27.359
Hi everyone, welcome to the latest episode, the first episode of My Career Labs Podcast.
00:00:27.519 --> 00:00:29.440
I'm your host, Emmy Akiniemi.
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:41.200
And this week I want to talk about something that I've noticed has become quite the topic I get stopped when people talk to me about careers, and it's why most careers stall.
00:00:41.359 --> 00:00:43.280
Now, I'm going to go off on a bit of a tangent.
00:00:43.439 --> 00:00:46.399
Before I start, I want to encourage you with one piece of truth.
00:00:46.560 --> 00:00:48.159
Your career is a seed.
00:00:48.240 --> 00:00:56.560
And when I say your career is a seed, what I mean is first and foremost, is that your career is not something you have to look at in silo.
00:00:57.039 --> 00:00:59.759
You have to look at your career as one long continuum.
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.719
So for a lot of us, we look at our careers and we think, I can't wait to leave this company.
00:01:04.879 --> 00:01:06.879
I can't wait to stop this thing I'm doing.
00:01:06.959 --> 00:01:09.120
I can't wait to move on to the next gig.
00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:14.959
But the truth is that you have to start looking at wherever you are as the seed for your next big step.
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:18.480
There's a popular scene I like saying it's bloom where you're planted.
00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:22.400
And it's wherever you find yourself at any given point in time.
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:28.959
You just have to find a way to roll with the punches and take something from it to make you develop.
00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:30.560
You've got to do two things.
00:01:30.799 --> 00:01:38.000
It's not easy, and I'm not telling you there's a simple way, but number one, find a way, if you don't like it, to not be bitter.
00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:41.280
Because if you hold that bitterness with you, you take it to the next place.
00:01:41.439 --> 00:01:44.000
And it's just poison you don't need in your system.
00:01:44.239 --> 00:01:48.239
Number two is find something you can hold on to that you can learn.
00:01:48.400 --> 00:01:56.560
Even if at best you learn how to be resilient, how to deal with tough managers, how to deal with colleagues that are toxic.
00:01:56.799 --> 00:02:02.799
Even if that's the one thing you learn, make sure you think about what you've learned and how you can apply it.
00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:06.480
It's not enough to just say, Well, I learned how to not be toxic.
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:17.520
You have to learn the steps you took so you can build a little step you can apply, a little plan so that the next time you see toxicity, for example, you know the steps to take.
00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:20.879
So it's not enough to just go through it and say, I came out the other side.
00:02:21.039 --> 00:02:23.039
Take something tangible you can learn.
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:25.120
So back to the topic of today.
00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:31.680
We're going to be talking about why careers stall and why hard work is not the problem.
00:02:31.919 --> 00:02:39.840
You see, the reason why I say that is because for a lot of us, we think sometimes when our career is not going the way we want or it's stalling, I just have to work harder.
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:44.879
But the truth is, at this stage in your careers, for most of us, it's not about hard work.
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:45.840
We've worked hard.
00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:46.879
You've worked hard.
00:02:47.039 --> 00:02:50.960
So someone telling you to work harder is not the answer you're looking for.
00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:52.000
It just isn't.
00:02:52.159 --> 00:03:05.680
What you are looking for is steps, plans, and just a way to rethink the situation so that you can start to press on your career and sort of like just give it that boost it needs.
00:03:05.919 --> 00:03:08.479
So that's what we'll be talking about in this episode.
00:03:08.560 --> 00:03:10.319
And I'm super excited to talk about that.
00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:19.599
It's a big thing that when I meet people, a lot of people just, especially when you get to a certain age or point in your career, you're thinking, I've just had enough of this.
00:03:19.759 --> 00:03:21.439
My career's come to a halt.
00:03:21.599 --> 00:03:24.639
I need a new career, I need to do something different.
00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:30.879
And all of these different things are ways of saying sort of the same thing in a different way.
00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:32.240
So, what are we gonna do?
00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:44.240
Let's talk, let's break that down a bit, dig into it, and kind of figure out some nice little tips, steps that we can take to help us break out of this sort of cycle of mindsets.
00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:44.719
Okay?
00:03:45.120 --> 00:03:46.560
So we'll be doing that now.
00:03:46.719 --> 00:03:48.240
And um, yeah, let's do that.
00:03:48.479 --> 00:03:53.680
So if you're listening, there's a good chance that on paper, right, things look fine.
00:03:53.840 --> 00:03:59.759
Things are going smoothly, things are going in a way that you just feel like, yeah, I'm good.
00:03:59.919 --> 00:04:01.520
I know what I'm doing at work.
00:04:01.759 --> 00:04:04.960
But internally, something doesn't just sit right.
00:04:05.360 --> 00:04:08.479
You're busy, yet you don't feel like you're moving forward.
00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:12.719
You're working hard, yet it feels like your progress is vague.
00:04:12.879 --> 00:04:16.160
You're not unhappy, but it's not enough to panic.
00:04:16.399 --> 00:04:20.720
So you feel unfulfilled, yet you feel settled.
00:04:20.879 --> 00:04:23.439
So the question you're kind of asking is, is this it?
00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:29.360
So you're not kind of saying it out loud, but you're kind of thinking to yourself, is this all that is?
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:34.000
So it's not dramatic, it's not anything, it's just present.
00:04:34.160 --> 00:04:37.759
You just have that vibe that kind of goes, is this all my career is?
00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:43.360
So if this resonates with you, this episode is an episode I absolutely want to listen to.
00:04:44.319 --> 00:04:46.720
Before we go further, I want to be clear about something.
00:04:47.040 --> 00:04:52.000
Hesitation at this stage of your career is not a weakness.
00:04:52.160 --> 00:04:56.480
If you feel like you're feeling unfulfilled, it's not a weakness.
00:04:56.639 --> 00:05:01.279
In fact, I would give you all the credit to say it's a sign of awareness.
00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:08.480
When you get to a point in your career, 30s, 40s, early 50s, the truth is the stakes are different.
00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:18.879
You have responsibilities, you have a reputation that you've worked hard to build, you have a life that depends on your success, your income, your decisions.
00:05:19.120 --> 00:05:26.720
So if you're cautious about making big, drastic steps, that doesn't mean you lack courage.
00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:28.560
It means you're very self-aware.
00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:33.360
It means you're responsible, it means you're conscious of the impact of decisions.
00:05:33.519 --> 00:05:36.240
And it kind of means you're thinking like an adult.
00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:38.959
So the problem isn't hesitation.
00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:41.759
The problem is being stuck in hesitation.
00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:43.279
And I'll say that again.
00:05:43.519 --> 00:05:49.199
The problem isn't that you're hesitating, it's that you're stuck in hesitation and without clarity.
00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:53.759
You're just on pause in one place and you haven't got that clarity around where you're gonna go.
00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:58.560
So the thing that usually happens when these kinds of things happen is self-blame.
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:05.120
We start to tell ourselves, maybe I've lost my edge, or maybe I should be just grateful for where I am after all.
00:06:05.600 --> 00:06:08.240
They brought me in and they let me do X, Y, Z.
00:06:08.560 --> 00:06:10.160
They let me be a success.
00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:13.439
Or you sometimes even think maybe this is as good as it gets.
00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:18.560
But in my work coaching people, I rarely see people who are lost, like who are actually lost.
00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:20.720
I just see people who are unclear.
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:32.240
You're still functioning, you're still high performing, you're still delivering against all your objectives, the things they need you to do as a consultant, as a worker, as in whatever you do.
00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:36.480
You just haven't articulated what you want to be known for.
00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:41.040
Because if you know what you want to be known for, that kind of gives you purpose.
00:06:41.199 --> 00:06:42.720
That gives you your branding.
00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:44.959
That tells you what you exist for.
00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:54.399
And the moment you have that clarity around what you exist for, it just makes everything else fall away because you kind of know why you do what you do and where you're going to where you're going.
00:06:54.639 --> 00:07:00.480
And being known for something, people think of it a lot in the sense of, but I'm not a business.
00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:01.839
You kind of are, right?
00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:04.959
Femi, akami, plc, right?
00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:08.240
Joe Thomas, PLC or Limited.
00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:24.720
You are a one-man business that needs to get revenue to pay your bills and pay your taxes and increase your revenue stream or increase your income so that you can do more and and um and then pay your bills and impact community, impact society.
00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:39.279
So you might not be a business that employs people, but you are a business in the sense that you need to continue to improve your skills, improve your ability, have clarity, have focus, increase your revenue regularly, and just continue to stay relevant.
00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:45.839
Back to the point, a lot of us sometimes what we're missing is what do we want to be known for?
00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:48.800
What direction do we want to put our efforts to?
00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:54.879
And in doing this, making that decision around what are the trade-offs we consciously want to make.
00:07:55.040 --> 00:07:57.680
And I want to quickly bring it back to trade-offs.
00:07:57.759 --> 00:08:00.800
I was speaking to my young coach, because we all have to have coaches, right?
00:08:00.959 --> 00:08:09.360
And one of the things he said was he was quoting Bruce Lee and Brucey about Bruce Lee saying he doesn't fear the man who can do 10 different kicks.
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:12.639
He fears the man who could do one kick 10,000 times.
00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:22.639
Or basically, the person who can have a one skill or one thing they're known for and they nail it down completely is a person that has clarity and will go places.
00:08:22.800 --> 00:08:24.319
Now, let me pause here.
00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:28.160
I'm not saying you cannot have a side hustle and many things you do.
00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:29.199
These are all true.
00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:32.559
But at your core, you have to have your North Star, your shining light.
00:08:32.639 --> 00:08:35.120
The thing that you know, this is just what I do.
00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:36.080
This is what I do.
00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:46.399
I have a friend who does a lot of investments into properties, and he has everything else he does around the edges, but he will tell you, I am a property person, and this guides him.
00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:48.639
All his decisions kind of guide towards that.
00:08:48.720 --> 00:08:54.559
And he knows that whatever steps he's making in his career, in his life, it's all building towards that.
00:08:54.639 --> 00:08:56.159
And it gives him clarity.
00:08:56.399 --> 00:09:03.840
So for some of you, you might say, I'm just someone who loves to make help businesses look after their money because that's what I do.
00:09:03.919 --> 00:09:05.200
And you're an accountant.
00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:06.480
Again, clarity.
00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:10.000
Once you have that clarity, you know that you just want to do that and do it well.
00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:13.519
And you stop getting distracted by all the things by the side.
00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:17.120
So it's about having clarity about who you are and those trade-offs.
00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:24.080
So if you don't have those trade-offs, if you don't have that clarity, every option feels risky because you feel like you have to do everything.
00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:27.120
And if you don't do one, then you're giving up on the other.
00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:29.519
And the one you're doing, everything just feels risky.
00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:32.960
So, and then every opportunity feels like a distraction.
00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:37.840
Every decision feels like it's heavier than it should be when it should be no big deal.
00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:40.080
It's just another decision you're making in your plans.
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:48.960
So that's not confusion, that's just lack of definition, lack of what exactly who you are, where you're trying to go.
00:09:49.039 --> 00:11:10.100
So what we have to think about is really is what is it that we want to do?
00:11:10.259 --> 00:11:13.299
And here's the part most people don't hear enough.
00:11:13.460 --> 00:11:15.379
It's not a personal failure.
00:11:15.539 --> 00:11:22.340
And I'm saying this to you again: it's not a personal failure that you don't have that clarity of who you are or where you're trying to go.
00:11:22.580 --> 00:11:24.419
It's just a phase in your career.
00:11:24.580 --> 00:11:29.700
Most career advice we grow up with always assume that your career goes in a straight line.
00:11:29.779 --> 00:11:31.620
You just get promotion, promotion, promotion.
00:11:31.779 --> 00:11:38.340
Or you assume that rules will not change, or that there was a very clear way to get from where you were to where you want to go.
00:11:38.580 --> 00:11:41.139
But I have news for you, and it's not great news.
00:11:41.299 --> 00:11:45.379
The world has changed with generational shifts, high technology.
00:11:45.539 --> 00:11:49.620
What you thought was a clear, simple career is not the way it is anymore.
00:11:49.860 --> 00:11:55.220
The world has changed, the world has changed dramatically, and the rules did not change.
00:11:55.379 --> 00:11:57.139
So we're kind of left in this middle place.
00:11:57.299 --> 00:12:07.940
So you're trying to navigate a non-layerlinear, volatile, fast-changing landscape using all the old assumptions, using that outdated map.
00:12:08.019 --> 00:12:11.700
And of course, things feel harder just because of this.
00:12:11.860 --> 00:12:14.419
So hard work used to be the medicine for this.
00:12:14.580 --> 00:12:17.460
People tell you just work harder, keep grinding, keep grinding.
00:12:17.620 --> 00:12:22.179
But truth is, today is hard work without direction just create fatigue.
00:12:22.340 --> 00:12:23.539
And I'll give you an example.
00:12:23.700 --> 00:12:33.139
I work with some people who tell you they won't use AI, it's not what it's, it's not it, it you can't you can't use it, etc., etc.
00:12:33.460 --> 00:12:38.019
And I use it for some things and I am outpacing them with output.
00:12:38.179 --> 00:12:39.220
And I'm working hard.
00:12:39.379 --> 00:12:43.220
But it just means that I'm working hard in using AI, example, for example, as a tool.
00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:47.379
And I'm putting out 10 times the amount of products they put out.
00:12:47.539 --> 00:12:48.500
Am I not working hard?
00:12:48.659 --> 00:12:49.620
Are they not working hard?
00:12:49.779 --> 00:12:51.139
But who's got the more output?
00:12:51.299 --> 00:12:52.019
And guess what?
00:12:52.179 --> 00:12:54.659
They'll feel fatigue before I feel fatigue.
00:12:54.980 --> 00:12:57.620
So the point is, hard work is not enough.
00:12:57.860 --> 00:13:04.259
Effort is no longer the differentiator, especially when some people have tools that can duplicate your effort, and it's like that.
00:13:04.500 --> 00:13:06.340
So, what is the differentiator?
00:13:06.500 --> 00:13:09.299
The first thing is I want to introduce perspective.
00:13:09.460 --> 00:13:18.179
One of the patterns I see repeatedly is this when you're inside your own career, everything feels it's just tunnel vision.
00:13:18.259 --> 00:13:24.740
Everything feels complex, it feels emotional, and from the outside, patterns are much easier to spot.
00:13:24.899 --> 00:13:27.779
So that's why sometimes you almost need to take a step back.
00:13:28.100 --> 00:13:36.100
It's not because someone is smarter than you, it's just because you are so much in the detail, you can't see what's going on with your career.
00:13:36.259 --> 00:13:44.179
But someone who's outside can see your career and see that, Femi, you're making progress, you're doing good things, but I just feel like I'm in quicksand, I'm stuck.
00:13:44.340 --> 00:13:49.139
And a simple way of thinking about it is that you can't read the label from inside of a bottle.
00:13:49.220 --> 00:13:52.659
If you're inside the catch-up bottle, you can't read the label because you're in the middle of it.
00:13:52.820 --> 00:14:00.580
And this is why clarity often doesn't come from thinking harder, it comes from stepping back and looking at your situation through a different lens.
00:14:00.820 --> 00:14:10.259
So it's not about being told what to do, but it's about being able to see what you're currently too close to and to see it in a way that allows you to just go.
00:14:10.419 --> 00:14:12.100
So here's the thing to think about.
00:14:12.259 --> 00:14:17.460
I want you to live today knowing that clarity isn't about knowing your next job title.
00:14:17.620 --> 00:14:18.740
That's not what it's about.
00:14:18.899 --> 00:14:21.299
It's not about knowing, oh, this is what my next job is.
00:14:21.460 --> 00:14:23.940
It's about knowing what you're optimizing for.
00:14:24.179 --> 00:14:26.340
It's about knowing what you're building to.
00:14:26.500 --> 00:14:39.299
And when that gets clearer, decisions get lighter, efforts become more strategic, how you spend your money, where you develop yourself, the meetings you go to, the things you let go, your effort becomes more strategic.
00:14:39.379 --> 00:14:43.940
And then your confidence just follows naturally because you kind of know where you're going on your own path.
00:14:44.100 --> 00:14:48.259
But without clarity, even smart people, you start to spin.
00:14:48.419 --> 00:14:49.860
You really start to spin.
00:14:50.019 --> 00:14:52.820
So instead of asking yourself, what should I do next?
00:14:52.980 --> 00:14:54.740
I want you to sit with this question.
00:14:54.980 --> 00:15:05.060
If nothing changed externally for the next 12 months, what would need to change internally for me to feel proud of myself and my career?
00:15:05.220 --> 00:15:06.259
I'll say that again.
00:15:06.500 --> 00:15:23.379
If nothing changed externally for the next 12 months, same job, same business, same hustle, same people you work with, if nothing changed for the next 12 months, what would need to change internally internally inside you to make you feel proud of where you are today?
00:15:23.539 --> 00:15:24.659
We're not talking action yet.
00:15:24.740 --> 00:15:26.019
I just want you to reflect on that.
00:15:26.179 --> 00:15:28.259
Over the next few weeks, you're going to be unpacking this.
00:15:28.419 --> 00:15:33.220
No action required, no decisions to make, just being brutally honest with yourself.
00:15:33.379 --> 00:15:35.299
That's the ask for this week.
00:15:35.460 --> 00:15:40.419
Think about what needs to change internally for the next 12 months for you to be proud of your career.
00:15:40.659 --> 00:15:46.179
If this episode has put words into something you've been feeling quietly, that's not an accident.
00:15:46.340 --> 00:15:52.980
It's something a lot of us are going through at this time of change and we feel kind of uncertain about where we're going to.
00:15:53.220 --> 00:16:01.379
Because moments like this, when questions surface but answers aren't obvious, are usually when clarity, work matters the most.
00:16:01.539 --> 00:16:08.580
It's not because you're broken, you are not broken, you are not lost, but because you're ready to think more deliberately.
00:16:08.740 --> 00:16:13.779
It just means life and your career has given you a signal to start to think more intentionally.
00:16:13.940 --> 00:16:20.820
So next week we'll go deeper into this idea and talk about why you're not lost at all and you're just a bit unclear.
00:16:20.980 --> 00:16:27.299
And when that and what that means for how you move forward, because you've got to be strategic about how you move.
00:16:27.460 --> 00:16:28.820
And that's what I want you to do.
00:16:28.980 --> 00:16:33.460
