Bill Cartwright: The Business Mindset of Professional Sports

Bill Cartwright shares the lessons he learned as he navigated a passion for basketball and turned it into a lifelong career. Listen in as Bill reveals key pieces of advice for college players who are looking to plan for the future, develop their skills, and how to treat professional sports like a job. Bill also shares how he dealt with the pressure of being the nation’s number one high school recruit and how he had to shift his mindset in order to find a professional path after college.

Bill Cartwright is a retired professional basketball player and coach who is a 5X NBA Champion, winning 3 championships as a Chicago Bulls player and 2 championships as a member of the Chicago Bulls coaching staff. Bill was drafted in the 1st round of the 1979 NBA Draft (as the 3rd overall pick) by the New York Knicks and he played in the NBA for 16 seasons with the New York Knicks, the Chicago Bulls, and the Seattle Supersonics. Post his NBA career, Bill served in numerous coaching positions, being an assistant coach and head coach with the Chicago Bulls, and also an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets and the Phoenix Suns, among other coaching positions. Currently, Bill is the Director of University Initiatives for the University of San Francisco.
