Police Couple Talks Trauma Critical Incidents Peer Support. Police officers and other first responders often face the harsh reality of critical incidents in the line of duty, leaving indelible marks on their lives and relationships. Cathy and Javier Bustos, a resilient couple with over 45 years of combined law enforcement experience, know this all too well.

Their journey, portrayed in the eye-opening documentary "Officer Involved," sheds light on the challenges and traumas encountered by those dedicated to protecting and serving. Cathy and Javier, now retired law enforcement officers, weathered numerous critical incidents throughout their careers, both individually and as a united front. One pivotal moment etched in their memories occurred on August 18th, 2010, when they faced the heart-wrenching loss of a fellow officer and friend in a line-of-duty death at Cathy's police department in Cedar Park, TX.

The following month, on September 25th, 2010, Javier found himself in the throes of an Officer Involved Shooting in Austin, TX, further compounding the trauma. The couple was thrust into an unfamiliar world, grappling with the aftermath of these critical incidents and forced to adapt to what they termed the "new normal."

Recognizing the importance of seeking help in the aftermath of such traumatic events, Cathy and Javier emphasize the outdated notion of stoically "shaking it off." Drawing from their four decades of collective experience, they've made it their mission to aid other first responders and their families in navigating the pervasive stress that accompanies critical incidents.

In candid conversations, Cathy and Javi share the coping mechanisms that proved instrumental in their personal healing and in fortifying their relationship. They stress the significance of early intervention and support for first responders, debunking the myth that toughness requires silence. The "new normal" doesn't have to be faced alone, and their insights offer a beacon of hope for those grappling with the aftermath of critical incidents.

As "That Peer Support Couple," Cathy and Javier Bustos are passionate advocates for the well-being of law enforcement officers and other first responders. Their dedication extends beyond their own experiences, as they strive to impart invaluable lessons and support to those navigating the complex intersection of life, careers, and recovery in the demanding world of first response.
