#26 A Whole Being Approach

In this episode, Arnold Beekes challenges the mechanistic way we're taught to see ourselves — as a collection of separate parts that doctors and schools treat individually, rather than as a genuinely interconnected whole. He introduces his framework, which he calls MESPAS-X, covering seven layers: Mental (thoughts and beliefs), Emotional (signals from the body pointing to unmet needs), Spiritual (our energy and sense of interconnectedness as electromagnetic beings), Physical (sleep, nutrition, exercise, and the visible tip of the iceberg — our words and actions), Environmental (the two-way relationship between our surroundings and our behavior, including Benjamin Hardy's point that no amount of willpower overcomes the wrong environment), Social (drawing on the 80-year Harvard Study of Adult Development, which found health and happiness come down to good relationships, not wealth or fame), and finally the "X" — the magical, mythical, and metaphysical layer, representing everything science still can't explain, illustrated by the striking fact that humans can only perceive roughly 0.0035% of the electromagnetic spectrum. Arnold's core argument is that working on just one layer barely moves the needle — someone eating perfectly healthy but stuck in a toxic relationship will still feel lousy — so real change means addressing every layer, consistently, over time. The episode closes with a story of everyday beauty: Clint Brower, who watched his father and countless other American farmers develop Parkinson's disease after decades of pesticide spraying, and who left a tech career to build Greenfield Robotics — a fleet of autonomous, herbicide-free robots that slice weeds with precision instead.

Ep 26 Between the Ears - Whole being

Welcome, I'm Arnold Beekes and I enable you to have a better life between the ears because your inner state creates your outer reality. Today's topic is a whole being approach. It's crucial when we are working on our brains and brain fitness and brain excellence is that we understand ourselves as whole beings rather than as mechanistical beings because that is what is taught at school, biology and other classes and that's what our doctors are doing.

They see us as mechanistic beings where we consist of various parts and yes these parts collaborate but we can solve any problem by looking at the part, replace the part or give some medicine to the part and then everything else is correct. Well, that is not how we function. We are whole beings and I use many different layers to explain to us what is a whole being consist of it and I use an acronym and it's called MESPAS-X and the M for a MESPAS is mental, the E is emotional, the S is spiritual, the P is physical, the E is environmental, the S is social and the X is magical.

So let's start with the mental layer. That's the layer where most of us are most familiar with that are mainly our thoughts and beliefs. That's the mental part.

Well, we put too much emphasis there and thoughts are moving and racing through our brain most of the day. So we're very familiar with that. Emotional layer, I've been discussing and I will discuss further how important it is to listen to our emotions and not to suppress them.

So emotional layer are signals, signals of our body. Well, signals come from our body but it's not necessarily about our body. They could signal something different.

Needs, the needs which we have but needs which are not met. The physical, yes, I'm not talking about your physical side of your body but it's like that is what we see. The top of the iceberg is like the words we use, the actions which we take.

And of course, yes, how do we take care of our body in terms of sleep, nutrition, exercise. The spiritual layer is basically our energy, our feeling of interconnectedness. It's, we are basically electromagnetic beings.

So the energy which we radiate is from the fact that we are vibrating a frequency, an energy and that's what we are and not just parts of a machine. The environment also has a huge impact on us. Environments influence neural processing which then shapes behavior and your behavior can also give a feedback to the environment.

So it works two ways. A man called Benjamin Hardy said, no matter how much internal resolve you have, you will fail to change your life if you don't change your environment. And an example which people use and I like it's a good example.

For instance, if you want to stop drinking alcohol, don't rent the room above a bar. It sounds very simple, but all of the time we do that, we try to get relationships with toxic people or abusive people. I mean, people tend to repeat it all over again.

And so be really sure in which environment you are. I know a couple of men, not women in this case, but doesn't mean it's not that they are not doing it, but who put on the radio as background noise in their homes. The moment they get out of bed and then they turn off the radio when they get to bed, but they don't listen to the music or they don't listen to someone talking on the radio.

The radio is their background noise to block hearing their own inner voice. So your environment layer is also very important. The social layer, well, it covers other people.

And it's very, very important because other people have a big, if not the huge impact on our health and happiness. There's this famous Harvard study of adult development. This is an 80 year study that says that health and happiness are not about wealth, fame, or working harder.

They are about good relationships. And as Robert Greene says, rather the secret is that all of us to some degree are in pain. It's a pain that we don't discuss or even understand.

And the source of this pain is other people. So that's the social part. Mespers X. What is the X? A big X. I put a big X. That is magic.

That's mythical. That's mysterious. That's metaphysical.

That's everything outside of the things which we think we know. And it is pretty clear to us. And we think that it's only a tiny portion.

How wrong are we? It's basically everything is flipped. In the Kabbalah, it's mentioned that 99% of reality is unseen and unheard. 99%.

So that means we only understand 1%. If you look at our visual capabilities, it's that humans can only see 0.0035% of the electromagnetic spectrum. And yet many people are convinced that they can perceive with their eyes and that what they can see with their eyes represent the totality of reality.

But we're effectively blind to 99.9965% of the electromagnetic universe. So there is much, much more which we don't see literally. Which we don't see as a matter of speech.

It's like we don't understand. We don't know what's going on. Even things like aliens or something like that.

Non-human intelligence. There's now a big project in the US called Disclosure. It's a project from Trump.

And it's called Disclosure where they are preparing people to let us understand that human beings are not the only beings in our universe. But it shows that still it confirms that there is so much more outside of our seeing, knowing and understanding which impacts us, you and I. So it's crucial this whole being approach and that we start working on every layer. Not only on one layer because everything interacts.

So if you do one layer, it basically has very, very little influence. We need to address every layer. The mental, the emotional, the physical, the spiritual, the environmental, the social and the magical.

So you need to put in, like I mentioned earlier, the everydayness. So spend every day a holistic effort over a longer period of time. Address each of those things.

Not every day, but don't say I'm only going to eat healthy and then I will be great. No, you won't. There are people who eat very healthy but are in a toxic relationship and they feel lousy all the time.

So you need to work on all these layers. Everyday beauty. We conclude each session with some examples of everyday beauty.

Because beauty and especially moral beauty, kindness, courage and compassion has a very positive influence on your inner state. There's a man called Clint Brower who grew up on his family farm in Kansas in the US. And his dad had sprayed the same chemicals every American farmer sprays.

But what was the consequence? Years later, his father got Parkinson's. And by the way, it's not only Clint's father. Many, many farmers as young as in their 40s and 50s are now diagnosed with Parkinson's because of the spraying of all these chemicals.

So what Clint did, he walked away from a tech career to build a different way. Today he has a company called Greenfield Robotics that runs a patented fleet of autonomous bots that slice weeds with centimeter precision, day or night, free of herbicides. Please remember, we need your uniqueness.

Be a better maker for yourself, for others, for the world.
