Wrong Number Pt 4: He'd Go Dim Forever Just to Set Me Free
Fated mates. Werewolf pack. Declaration. Happy ending. The severance is at moonrise, in the same clearing, and Sadie has dressed it herself, because she cannot help it. At three in the morning on the floor of a hallway, with a cup of coffee he left...
The severance is at moonrise, in the same clearing, and Sadie has dressed it herself, because she cannot help it. At three in the morning on the floor of a hallway, with a cup of coffee he left her while she was leaving him, she finally reads the pack's oldest line the way she reads a contract, and finds the clause four hundred years of wolves have missed. But knowing the truth is still being handed something. And Sadie is done being handed things.

03 Hello and welcome to Romance Weekly. This series is titled Wrong Number. Wrong Number Here is what nobody tells you about planning your own heartbreak. You are very good at it, because you have had practice. And that is the saddest part.
45 I planned the severance the way I plan everything, flawlessly, through six days I do not remember well. Cal kept his distance, because I had asked him to, because he always did what I asked, which was the whole problem, and had somehow become the whole heartbreak. The pack moved around me with the careful quiet you use around a woman dismantling her own life on purpose. And the moon got fuller, and my beautiful binder got thicker. And the night before, I could not sleep. So I went down to the kitchen, at 3am, and there was coffee outside my door on the way. Perfect temperature. No note. Even now.
29 Even while I was leaving him, he was still not pulling on the bond. still just quietly making it a little easier to be me. I sat on the floor of the hallway with the coffee, and I finally let myself do the math I had been refusing. The bond only binds where it's meant to. That was the line that broke me. But I am a person who reads contracts for a living, who finds the buried claws that ruins the client's day. And I had been reading that one sentence like a scared woman instead of like a professional. So at 3am, on the floor, with his coffee going cold in my hands, I finally read it straight.
11 Odette. Six months engaged. Both of them willing, sensible, doing everything right. Both of them quietly counting on the ceremony to do the falling for them. And the bond had slept the entire time. It did not fire for the couple who were relying on it. It refused the two people who wanted it to choose for them. And then it fired. It fired. catastrophically undeniably on the one woman in that clearing who did not believe in it who would sooner chew off her own arm than let a magic pick her husband who was standing at the back actively furiously against her own religion and her own history falling for a man she was trying with her whole heart to hate that was when i understood i had it backwards the whole pack had it backwards 400 years of them the bond is not destiny It does not choose for you, and it does not bind where it's meant to, in the lazy way they all believe, the way my ex meant it, the feeling without the choosing way. It can only catch, it has only ever caught, where a real choice is already burning on its own, unassisted, with no fairy tale propping it up. Every fated couple in their sacred records leaned on the legend and let the story do their loving for them. which is exactly why so many of those famous Bonds were quiet and dutiful and half asleep. A cat in the sun. Mine looked like a misfire for one reason. I was the only person
44 in that clearing who refused to let anything choose for me. So I was the only one, actually, unbearably, choosing. My resistance was not the Bond failing. My resistance was the Bond working. It was the realist one they had seen in generations, Precisely because it was the only one. Nobody, not the universe, not the ceremony, not even me, had been allowed to fake. I had the whole truth, sitting on a hallway floor at 3am with a cold cup of perfect coffee. And I want to tell you the truth is what saved us. It is not. This is the part I am proudest of in my entire life. Because I stood up. And I realized that if I marched into that severance and announced, stop, the bond is real, the universe was right, I choose him because it turns out it was meant to be. Then I would just be doing the exact thing I have hated since I was 26, one more time, in a nicer dress. I would be letting a revelation choose for me.
50 I would be a woman at an altar calling a feeling destiny because someone handed me a reason. Being handed the truth is still being handed something, and I was so completely done being handed things. So I did not stop the severance because I found out the bond was real. I stopped it because I wanted to, which is a different thing, which is the only thing that has ever, in the history of the world, actually mattered. The severance was at moonrise, in the clearing, the same clearing, and I had dressed it myself, because I could not help it, and it was beautiful, and the whole pack came to watch the human walk away. The old officiant raised his hands.
43 Lenora stood with her jaw set like a woman doing a hard, correct thing. Cal stood across from me in the gold-going silver light, dim already somehow, braced to lose the one bond of his life and go quiet forever, and never once tell me it hurt. The officiant started the words. No, I said. Three hundred wolves can go very still. It is like a forest realizing you are there. Every head turned, and this time, I did not feel like a deer in the middle of them. I felt like the only person present who knew what she was doing, which, given that I had staged this exact clearing twice now, was technically true.
23 I'm sorry, I said. to the officiant, to Lenora, to the pack, and then only to Cal, walking to him across the clearing I had dressed for my own goodbye, past the moonflowers I had chosen, under the arch I had built for a wedding that misfired and a severance that would not happen. I run these. I have run 216 of these. I have spent my whole life standing just off to the side, timing other people's forever. and never once believing a single word of it, because I thought choosing and being chosen were opposites. I thought if you got handed a fate, you were erased, so I chose no one. I built the most beautiful doors in the world, and I stood in front of every one of them, and I never walked through. Sadie, Cal said, wrecked, hoping, not letting himself hope. You would have gone dim for the rest of a very long life, rather than pull on me one time, I said. You left me coffee while I was leaving you. You never once made me stay.
32 And that, you enormous, infuriating, patient man, is the only reason I get to do this next part, and have it mean anything at all. I reached him. I took his huge, careful hand in both of mine, the hand that had shaken mine on the worst day of his life. and apologized on behalf of the entire sky. I found out the truth last night. I found out the bond is real, that it only catches where you're already choosing, that this was never a spell doing my feeling for me, and I need you to hear that I do not care. I'm not staying because I found out it's real. I'm not staying because the universe was right. I could not care less what the universe thinks. I'm staying because I want you. I choose you. Out loud, on the record, in front of everyone, with no magic and no meant to be, and no fate to blame it on. Just me, deciding, the hard way, with both hands. My voice went somewhere it has never gone in 300 ceremonies. That's my vow.
39 I have written 300 of them for other people. This is the first one I have ever meant, and I mean it because I chose it, not because it was meant. And Cal Thorne who had been a passenger his entire long, careful life, the dutiful son, the arranged match, the good boy who did what he was told right up until the night the universe told him to lose me, finally, for the first time, chose something back. He looked at his mother. He looked at the officiant, at 400 years of the way things are done. And then he looked back at me and said, I'm not severing it. I don't care what it costs. I would have paid anything to set her free, and I'll pay anything to keep her.
25 And here is the part you all forgot. Both of those are mine to choose. He turned then to the table, to the whole seated line of them, to Osric, and he did the one thing I had told him a month ago he could not do. He said my name at his own table where every one of them could hear it. Her name is Sadie. She is not an embarrassment to this line. She is the best thing that has ever happened to it. And the next person who calls her a stain in my house answers to me. His voice was not gentle now, not the golden retriever murmur. It was the air, finally standing up in the one room he had always sat down in. Then it softened, all at once, only for me. The golden retriever's smile broke across his face, the one I had crossed a whole disaster to deserve. Turns out the wrong number was the only one that ever rang true. That was terrible, I told him. That was a genuinely terrible line. You're crying.
27 I'm aware of what I'm doing, thank you. The pack did not know whether to howl or applaud, so they did both, which is a genuinely alarming sound, and Cass, at the back, screamed. Lenora looked at the two of us for a long moment, and then at the bond that had refused to sever, blazing now, wide awake. and something in her formidable face gave way, and she said, 400 years of records, and it turns out we never understood the thing at all. It only catches where you're already choosing, I said. You just have to be the kind of stubborn that won't let it choose for you. Then it makes sense it found you, she said, which from a werewolf, I have learned, is a blessing. The clearing came apart into the good kind of chaos after that.
17 Cass was sobbing and laughing at once, and telling a nearby aunt, who she had known for four days, the entire story of our friendship. Odette hugged me, hard and murmured, thank you, genuinely. I was terrified he'd talk himself into marrying me out of duty, and we'd both have been polite forever, which is the most tragic sentence I have ever heard delivered with that much relief. Bly asked, at top volume, whether this meant I lived here now, and when Cal said yes, the boy howled, just launched a joyful howl straight up at the moon, and the whole pack caught it and answered. 300 voices going up into the silver dark, and I stood in the middle of a sound that should have terrified me and felt, for the first time in my adult life, that a great many people were extremely glad I had decided to stay.
12 I did not plan that moment. I could not have. It was the first event of my life. I did not run. And it was the best one I have ever been to. We did not get married that night, for the record. We are taking it slow, which is a hilarious thing to say about a woman who is soul-bonded to a werewolf, but there it is. The bond is real, and I still do not believe in destiny. And it turns out those two things sit together just fine, because I have decided the bond is not destiny, it is just proof. A receipt for a choice I make new every single morning when I wake up in a house full of people who can hear my heart, and hear it decide, again, freely, to stay. I am planning a wedding, finally, that I believe in. It is small, it is at moonrise, because apparently I am that person now.
09 The florist is doing moonflowers, which open on cue, which I have stopped arguing with. I have hired a dove wrangler I trust, and timed nothing, not one single tear, because for the first time in 217 weddings, I do not need to manufacture the moment. I already know it is real. I chose it. It is mine. Thank you for listening to Wrong Number. May you refuse to let anything choose for you, right up until the moment you choose it yourself. And may your wrong number be the only one that ever rings true.
