THE ONE WHO CAME BACK — Part 2: For One Breath, His Eyes Didn't Catch the Firelight.

THE ONE WHO CAME BACK — Part 2: For One Breath, His Eyes Didn't Catch the Firelight.

She doesn't ask how. She gets him warm with her hands, reading him scar by scar like a page — and the checking becomes something else, the way it always did with them.There is a particular devastation in being touched by someone who already knows every part of you. No learning the map. His hands know the map.

By morning the town knows, and the town can't decide. Some weep and call it a miracle. Some cross the street, because there is something in people that knows what is allowed, and a man three years drowned walking in the sun is not allowed. Only Wes says it out loud. Wes was in the water that night. Wes is the one who came back.

And underneath the joy, the seams begin to show. Jonah cannot remember their first summer. He remembers that he is supposed to remember it. And the bowl that mended itself has a new crack running across the gold.

Part 2 of 4.

00:00:03.770 --> 00:00:16.789
Hello and welcome to Romance Weekly. This is The One

2
00:00:16.859 --> 00:00:23.469
Who Came Back. Episode 2, Reunion. The One Who Came.

3
00:00:24.789 --> 00:00:39.780
Back I got him warm, the way I get everything warm,

4
00:00:40.299 --> 00:00:44.640
with my hands. I stripped the soaked clothes off him

5
00:00:44.679 --> 00:00:47.039
in the back room by the kiln and I wrapped

6
00:00:47.079 --> 00:00:49.640
him in every blanket I owned and I built the

7
00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:52.560
fire up until the shop was an oven and the

8
00:00:52.579 --> 00:00:54.920
whole time my hands would not stop moving over him.

9
00:00:56.420 --> 00:00:59.950
His shoulders, his jaw, the long scar on his forearm

10
00:00:59.979 --> 00:01:03.719
from a chisel that slipped when he was nineteen. as

11
00:01:03.780 --> 00:01:06.219
if I could confirm him by touch, as if my

12
00:01:06.280 --> 00:01:10.189
hands would believe what my eyes could not. And he

13
00:01:10.250 --> 00:01:13.469
let me. He sat there shaking and let me put

14
00:01:13.510 --> 00:01:15.790
my hands all over him and read him like a page.

15
00:01:16.769 --> 00:01:18.709
And when I got to the scar, he made a sound,

16
00:01:19.310 --> 00:01:24.219
half a laugh and half a sob, and said, It's me, Mara.

17
00:01:24.700 --> 00:01:29.180
It's me. You can stop checking. But I could not

18
00:01:29.239 --> 00:01:32.609
stop checking, and I did not stop. and somewhere the

19
00:01:32.629 --> 00:01:35.950
checking became something else, the way it does, the way

20
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.400
it always did with us. My hands slowed, his breath

21
00:01:40.459 --> 00:01:43.239
changed under them, and when I finally looked up from

22
00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:45.579
his body to his face, he was already looking at me.

23
00:01:47.280 --> 00:01:49.420
And there was three years of drowning in that look,

24
00:01:49.959 --> 00:01:51.920
and three years of standing at the edge of the

25
00:01:51.969 --> 00:01:54.629
water in the dark, and neither of us said anything

26
00:01:54.689 --> 00:01:58.030
at all, because there was nothing left in the world

27
00:01:58.069 --> 00:02:01.890
that needed saying. I will not give you all of it,

28
00:02:02.469 --> 00:02:04.590
some of it is mine, but I will tell you

29
00:02:04.989 --> 00:02:07.530
that there is a particular devastation in being touched by

30
00:02:07.609 --> 00:02:10.629
someone who already knows every part of you, who does

31
00:02:10.689 --> 00:02:15.479
not have to learn, who remembers. There was no shyness

32
00:02:15.539 --> 00:02:20.060
in it, no first-time carefulness, no learning the map. His

33
00:02:20.120 --> 00:02:22.780
hands knew the map. They went where they had always

34
00:02:22.840 --> 00:02:27.259
gone and did what they had always done. They found

35
00:02:27.300 --> 00:02:29.659
the place at the base of my spine that undoes me,

36
00:02:30.240 --> 00:02:33.099
and the hollow under my jaw, and the old certain

37
00:02:33.180 --> 00:02:37.330
hunger in them. And my body answered, before my mind

38
00:02:37.389 --> 00:02:40.569
could catch up, arching into hands I had wept over,

39
00:02:41.330 --> 00:02:43.629
hands I had grieved as lost forever to the cold,

40
00:02:44.129 --> 00:02:48.449
and here they were, warm and sure and home. I

41
00:02:48.490 --> 00:02:51.060
had spent three years touching my own skin in the dark,

42
00:02:51.460 --> 00:02:54.939
and calling it his out of memory. Memory is nothing

43
00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:58.800
next to this. I dragged him down to me on

44
00:02:58.819 --> 00:03:01.330
the blankets, and there was a sound that came out

45
00:03:01.389 --> 00:03:03.770
of my own throat that I had not made in

46
00:03:03.849 --> 00:03:06.689
three years, that I had thought was buried with him,

47
00:03:07.169 --> 00:03:10.550
and hearing it come out of me, undid me worse

48
00:03:10.590 --> 00:03:14.849
than anything his hands were doing. Three years of grief

49
00:03:14.930 --> 00:03:17.469
came apart all at once into something that was almost

50
00:03:17.530 --> 00:03:21.449
grief still, so close to it, that same total flood,

51
00:03:22.129 --> 00:03:27.340
only turned now toward the living. I had mourned this

52
00:03:27.419 --> 00:03:30.620
body inch by inch, Now I got it back, inch

53
00:03:30.680 --> 00:03:34.430
by inch, and I took it back, greedy and weeping

54
00:03:34.909 --> 00:03:38.610
and half laughing, the past igniting so hot and so

55
00:03:38.689 --> 00:03:41.550
fast there was no room in it for a single question.

56
00:03:43.289 --> 00:03:44.969
We did not make it out of the back room.

57
00:03:45.810 --> 00:03:48.050
We came together on the blankets by the kiln with

58
00:03:48.090 --> 00:03:51.110
the fire roaring and the fog pressed white against the

59
00:03:51.150 --> 00:03:55.069
black windows. And it was not gentle, and it was

60
00:03:55.110 --> 00:03:58.550
not slow, and it was the most alive I had felt.

61
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:03.099
since the day the water took him. My name in

62
00:04:03.139 --> 00:04:07.199
his mouth, his weight I had grieved. The particular way,

63
00:04:07.300 --> 00:04:10.699
he said, please, that I had forgotten I remembered, until

64
00:04:10.740 --> 00:04:13.300
I heard it again and my whole chest broke open.

65
00:04:13.900 --> 00:04:14.599
I got him back.

66
00:04:16.319 --> 00:04:18.639
That night I got all of him back, and I

67
00:04:18.699 --> 00:04:20.750
held on like the tide was in the room trying

68
00:04:20.769 --> 00:04:23.589
to take him again, because some animal part of me

69
00:04:23.629 --> 00:04:26.829
knew that it was. Here is the thing I did

70
00:04:26.870 --> 00:04:30.220
not let myself notice until later. going back over it

71
00:04:30.279 --> 00:04:32.100
the way you go back over a thing you cannot

72
00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:36.160
stop touching. There was a moment, at the very height

73
00:04:36.199 --> 00:04:40.000
of it, when his eyes were on mine, close, and

74
00:04:40.019 --> 00:04:42.560
for the space of one breath they did not catch

75
00:04:42.610 --> 00:04:46.490
the firelight. Everything in that room was gold, with the kiln,

76
00:04:46.930 --> 00:04:50.769
my skin, his skin, the sweat on us, everything lit,

77
00:04:51.790 --> 00:04:54.170
and his eyes for one breath were flat and dark

78
00:04:54.250 --> 00:04:57.990
and reflected nothing, two holes where the fire should have shone.

79
00:04:59.230 --> 00:05:01.750
and the smell of deep cold water rose up over

80
00:05:01.790 --> 00:05:05.560
the wood smoke, and then it was gone. And he

81
00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:11.040
was Jonah again, gasping my name, warm, here. I told

82
00:05:11.079 --> 00:05:14.279
myself it was nothing. I told myself a great many

83
00:05:14.360 --> 00:05:18.189
things that first night. I was so happy. You have

84
00:05:18.230 --> 00:05:21.769
to understand how happy I was. I would have told

85
00:05:21.810 --> 00:05:26.670
myself the sky was green. The town found out by morning.

86
00:05:27.310 --> 00:05:30.170
the way a small town finds out everything, and the

87
00:05:30.209 --> 00:05:32.709
town did not know what to do with it. Some

88
00:05:32.750 --> 00:05:36.050
of them called it a miracle. Old Ruth from the

89
00:05:36.089 --> 00:05:39.329
chandlery wept in my doorway and said God had given

90
00:05:39.379 --> 00:05:42.360
him back, that she had prayed for it, that the

91
00:05:42.420 --> 00:05:46.579
sea returns what it is meant to return. Others crossed

92
00:05:46.620 --> 00:05:50.160
the street. Others looked at Jonah walking the harbour road

93
00:05:50.220 --> 00:05:55.480
in borrowed clothes, alive and warm and laughing, and went pale,

94
00:05:56.050 --> 00:05:58.970
and would not meet his eyes, because there is something

95
00:05:59.029 --> 00:06:03.079
in people that knows, underneath, what is allowed and what

96
00:06:03.139 --> 00:06:07.240
is not. And a man three years drowned walking in

97
00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:10.199
the sun is not allowed. I saw them feel it.

98
00:06:10.920 --> 00:06:11.680
I did not care.

99
00:06:12.699 --> 00:06:13.480
Let them feel it.

100
00:06:15.279 --> 00:06:17.810
I had my hand in his hand, and his hand

101
00:06:17.850 --> 00:06:20.629
was warm. There were things I could have let myself

102
00:06:20.730 --> 00:06:24.629
notice if I had wanted to. The dogs would not

103
00:06:24.670 --> 00:06:28.060
go near him, they set up a low steady whine

104
00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:31.490
and backed away with their ears flat, every one of them,

105
00:06:32.189 --> 00:06:37.029
even old blind Sunday, who loves the whole world. The

106
00:06:37.069 --> 00:06:39.670
fog seemed to lean toward him on the harbour road,

107
00:06:40.189 --> 00:06:43.269
to follow a step behind him like a slow grey animal.

108
00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:47.839
Birds went quiet when he passed under them, and the

109
00:06:47.899 --> 00:06:50.819
harbour itself, on the mornings he walked down to look

110
00:06:50.860 --> 00:06:53.959
at the boats he used to build, went strangely flat

111
00:06:54.050 --> 00:06:58.879
and still. the water lying too calm, as if it

112
00:06:58.899 --> 00:07:03.360
were holding its breath, or listening, or waiting for something

113
00:07:03.420 --> 00:07:06.339
it had lent out to be returned. I saw all

114
00:07:06.360 --> 00:07:09.199
of it. I filed all of it away under the

115
00:07:09.250 --> 00:07:12.790
great roaring fact that he was home. Joy is its

116
00:07:12.870 --> 00:07:15.790
own kind of fog. You cannot see the shapes in

117
00:07:15.850 --> 00:07:21.709
it either. Only Wes said it out loud. Jonah's brother

118
00:07:21.829 --> 00:07:24.269
came to the shop on the second day, and he

119
00:07:24.329 --> 00:07:27.220
stood in the doorway, and would not come in, and

120
00:07:27.259 --> 00:07:29.800
he looked at Jonah across the room, the way you

121
00:07:29.819 --> 00:07:33.050
look at a stranger wearing your brother's coat. Wes had

122
00:07:33.079 --> 00:07:35.850
been in the water that night too. Wes was the

123
00:07:35.930 --> 00:07:38.209
one who came back three years ago, the one who

124
00:07:38.250 --> 00:07:40.930
buried the empty box, the one who had not been

125
00:07:40.990 --> 00:07:44.430
entirely right since, who drank and did not sleep, and

126
00:07:44.470 --> 00:07:47.689
had a way of stopping mid-sentence and staring at the harbour.

127
00:07:49.430 --> 00:07:52.269
Wes looked at his brother returned from the dead, and

128
00:07:52.290 --> 00:07:55.100
there was no joy in his face at all, Only

129
00:07:55.149 --> 00:07:59.060
a kind of horror, and something worse than horror. Something

130
00:07:59.100 --> 00:08:03.699
that looked, if I am honest, like guilt. That's not him,

131
00:08:04.379 --> 00:08:07.170
Wes said to me low, when Jonah stepped into the back.

132
00:08:07.819 --> 00:08:12.189
His voice was shaking. Mara, whatever that is, that is

133
00:08:12.250 --> 00:08:12.850
not my brother.

134
00:08:14.050 --> 00:08:14.550
I was there.

135
00:08:15.350 --> 00:08:18.029
I know what the water does. Nothing comes back from

136
00:08:18.069 --> 00:08:18.649
where he went.

137
00:08:19.189 --> 00:08:19.540
Nothing.

138
00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:24.660
He grabbed my arm. Let him go. Whatever you did,

139
00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:27.579
whatever you've been doing down at that cove every night,

140
00:08:28.040 --> 00:08:31.949
and don't tell me you haven't, everybody's seen you. Let

141
00:08:31.990 --> 00:08:36.009
him go before it finishes, before what finishes. He looked

142
00:08:36.029 --> 00:08:37.730
at me like he could not believe I was making

143
00:08:37.769 --> 00:08:40.350
him say it, like the not knowing was a mercy

144
00:08:40.409 --> 00:08:43.470
he envied me. There's a reason the sea doesn't give

145
00:08:43.490 --> 00:08:47.059
them back, Mara. There's a reason I have spent three

146
00:08:47.100 --> 00:08:50.960
years learning it, the hard way, alone, and you are

147
00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:54.059
about to learn it too. and by the time you

148
00:08:54.100 --> 00:08:56.700
understand what he is, it'll have its hooks in both

149
00:08:56.740 --> 00:09:00.139
of you. His eyes were red and wet, and there

150
00:09:00.179 --> 00:09:02.750
was that other thing swimming in them, the thing I

151
00:09:02.789 --> 00:09:06.570
would not name for another two episodes. The guilt that

152
00:09:06.590 --> 00:09:09.710
was eating him from the inside, the same way something

153
00:09:09.750 --> 00:09:13.809
was about to start eating me. You always fix things.

154
00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:17.879
Everybody brings you the broken thing, and you make it beautiful.

155
00:09:18.620 --> 00:09:22.100
But some things, Mara, some things you are supposed to

156
00:09:22.139 --> 00:09:25.200
let stay broken. some things you are supposed to let

157
00:09:25.240 --> 00:09:29.570
go under. Before what finishes? He would not answer, but

158
00:09:29.610 --> 00:09:32.309
Jonah came back in then, and Wes let go of

159
00:09:32.370 --> 00:09:35.909
my arm and left without another word, and I watched

160
00:09:35.950 --> 00:09:38.700
the brothers look at each other across my shop, and

161
00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:42.360
it was not a reunion. It was two men who

162
00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:45.220
each knew something the other did not, and neither one

163
00:09:45.240 --> 00:09:55.169
would say it. That night Jonah could not remember our

164
00:09:55.230 --> 00:09:59.049
first summer. I mentioned the bonfire on the point, the

165
00:09:59.129 --> 00:10:02.389
one where he first came. me, and he smiled and

166
00:10:02.450 --> 00:10:05.889
agreed and said the right things, and it was wrong.

167
00:10:06.590 --> 00:10:09.549
All of it was slightly wrong, like a mend laid

168
00:10:09.610 --> 00:10:12.809
by someone working from a photograph of the break instead

169
00:10:12.850 --> 00:10:16.090
of the break itself. He did not remember the bonfire.

170
00:10:17.549 --> 00:10:20.080
He remembered that he was supposed to remember it, and

171
00:10:20.100 --> 00:10:24.179
when I pressed, gently, frightened, he went still the way

172
00:10:24.220 --> 00:10:26.879
still water goes, and for a moment the cold came

173
00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:29.250
up in the room and the deep water smell with it,

174
00:10:29.850 --> 00:10:32.450
and he said, in a voice that was almost his

175
00:10:32.529 --> 00:10:36.070
and not quite, some of it didn't come back with me, Mara.

176
00:10:36.750 --> 00:10:40.190
I left pieces out there, in the current. He looked

177
00:10:40.230 --> 00:10:43.289
at his own hands, turning them over, as if he

178
00:10:43.330 --> 00:10:46.370
were not entirely sure they were his. But you can

179
00:10:46.409 --> 00:10:50.379
help me, can't you? You're so good at putting things

180
00:10:50.409 --> 00:10:52.519
back together, Mara. It was the way he said it

181
00:10:52.600 --> 00:10:58.080
that frightened me more than the forgetting. Not sad, not lost, expectant.

182
00:10:59.590 --> 00:11:01.830
As if it were understood between us that mending him

183
00:11:02.210 --> 00:11:05.629
was the arrangement, the terms, the reason he had been

184
00:11:05.669 --> 00:11:09.649
allowed to come. As if something had promised him, out

185
00:11:09.690 --> 00:11:11.970
there in the current, that there would be a woman

186
00:11:12.029 --> 00:11:15.049
on this end who could not stop mending, who would

187
00:11:15.090 --> 00:11:18.429
fill whatever was missing without asking what she was filling

188
00:11:18.470 --> 00:11:22.639
it with. And that was true. That was exactly what

189
00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:25.960
I was. I had proven it every night for three

190
00:11:26.019 --> 00:11:29.590
years on a bowl. I lay awake beside him a

191
00:11:29.629 --> 00:11:32.750
long time after he slept. He did not sleep the

192
00:11:32.769 --> 00:11:36.309
way the living sleep. He lay too still, and he

193
00:11:36.350 --> 00:11:39.490
did not always seem to breathe. And once, in the

194
00:11:39.529 --> 00:11:41.879
deep middle of the night, I put my hand on

195
00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:45.120
his chest to feel his heart, and there was a long,

196
00:11:45.179 --> 00:11:48.480
long pause before I found it, longer than a heart

197
00:11:48.519 --> 00:11:51.259
should pause. as if it had to remember it was

198
00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:55.019
supposed to beat, and then remembered. Because I was there,

199
00:11:55.620 --> 00:11:58.490
because I was touching him, because I wanted it to.

200
00:12:00.009 --> 00:12:02.629
On the shelf above the bench, the bowl I had

201
00:12:02.669 --> 00:12:05.990
watched mend itself sat whole in the dark, and as

202
00:12:06.049 --> 00:12:09.529
he spoke, I saw a new hairline crack open across

203
00:12:09.590 --> 00:12:13.980
the gold, thin as a hair, and I understood, without

204
00:12:14.029 --> 00:12:17.000
wanting to, that the two things were the same thing,

205
00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:20.690
that he was the bowl, that something in me had

206
00:12:20.750 --> 00:12:23.700
been mending him for three years, and that the mend

207
00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:26.960
was not finished, and that the unfinished places were where

208
00:12:26.980 --> 00:12:27.789
the cold got in.
