Traveling Sober
In my episode titled “Sober Travel that Actually Works with Teresa Bergen,” Teresa and I explored practical tips and tricks from her book, Sober Travel Handbook: Navigating the World Alcohol-Free.
Something that continues to help me is remembering not only how bad things got, but visualizing how I will feel once the drink wears off—both physically and emotionally. Our brains have a beautiful, built-in protection mechanism that tries to block out difficult memories. As lovely as that is, it can sometimes be detrimental when you are in recovery. In those moments, I recommend having someone you can call for support—someone who can remind you of how far you have come.
Life does not have to be boring because you’re a non-drinker; it just takes a little more planning and patience with yourself. Think of how good you will feel making it through that vacation or business trip completely sober. Who knows? You might even find someone else who is also a non-drinker, and you can support each other along the way.
Warmly,
Cat
