Prince Harry Reveals Depression, Panic Attacks and His 10-Day Rule for Meghan and the Kids

Prince Harry is opening up about some of the darkest periods of his life, including depression, panic attacks and the complicated grief he experienced following Princess Diana’s death.
In a new MasterClass conversation, Harry reveals that he tries never to spend more than ten days away from Meghan Markle and their children, Archie and Lilibet. He also describes experiencing a dramatic emotional crash after moving to Canada, when the stress and adrenaline that had driven him for years suddenly disappeared. Harry says he slipped into depression for approximately two weeks and struggled to function.

Harry also discusses the panic attacks he experienced before royal engagements, explaining how something as simple as putting on a shirt and tie could leave him feeling suffocated. He reveals that therapy helped him process Diana’s death, that he keeps a photograph of his mother nearby and that he still looks to her for guidance.

But the MasterClass appearance has sparked criticism, with reports confirming Harry was paid to participate. Some critics accuse him of profiting from his mother’s death, although the amount he received has not been disclosed.

Meanwhile, Meghan has been spotted having tea with Malala Yousafzai at Claridge’s in London, wearing an outfit and accessories valued by the Daily Mail at approximately $37,000.
There are also new questions about Meghan’s As Ever business. According to Similarweb estimates reported by Newsweek, visits to the brand’s website dropped approximately 22 percent in September. An As Ever spokesperson says the decline reflects normal fluctuations between product launches rather than a problem with the business.

Plus, social media critics are accusing Meghan of copying Princess Diana’s style in her latest holiday promotional photographs.

0:03 Kalaroga Shark Media. Hello and welcome to Palace Intrigue. I am your host, Mark Francis. Prince Harry says he tries to spend no more than 10 days away from Meghan and their children, describing that limit as central to balancing family life with his work. Speaking in the new Masterclass, Redefining Grief, Building Resilience Through Loss, Harry said, The biggest factor for me is the energy and the joy and happiness that I get being with my family, especially our kids, and the joy and happiness I get being on the ground for my work. The key to finding the joy and happiness balance is no more than 10 days away from my wife and kids. This is balancing my work and the purpose behind that as well as being a dad and a husband and the sort of multi-identity elements coming together. In the same conversation, Harry described struggling after moving to Canada with Megan and Archie in late 2019.

1:00 Being in Canada, away from this stressful environment where presumably my body was just pumped full of adrenaline within two or three days, I experienced this adrenaline crash, something that I'd never experienced before. He said he felt he needed stress in order to get the adrenaline to make my brain function because I became useless around the house. I actually slipped into depression for about two weeks and I felt like I couldn't function without adrenaline. Harry also described feeling that happiness would somehow betray his mother. I'd spent so long emotionally numb to a large extent because I felt disloyal and guilty for the possibility of being happy and joyful without her. I felt like I had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb in order to prove to her that I missed her. He said he had forgotten Diana's laugh. A therapist suggested using her perfume, which helped him unlock everything that had been locked previously. The reality is what I discovered was actually she just wanted me to be happy, he said. Harry says royal engagements once caused him panic attacks before he had even arrived, with getting dressed becoming part of the ordeal.

2:08 There was a time where public engagements just created absolute panic right from beginning to end. The panic was having to put my suit, jacket and tie on and suddenly feel suffocated. The panic was going from A to B, getting out of the car in front of all the cameras and the clicks. I started to realize that I had become seriously depleted when just putting a simple dress shirt on. The tightening of the collar literally felt like I was suffocating and I would be experiencing panic attacks just in the car on the way to work. The biggest anxiety that was created for me was the fear of sweating. It was the fear of people seeing me looking disheveled and me not being able to explain to them in one short sentence what's actually going on. Harry described a military service as the perfect distraction from grief.

2:53 After returning from his second Afghanistan tour in 2013, he began withdrawing from friends. I would be much more comfortable sitting at home watching friends, he said. He recalled seeking help from several GPs before finding a therapist who helped him understand what he was experiencing. One of the greatest things that I got from my therapy was permission to grieve. I learned more about myself in two or three sessions than I had done in 20 years. Harry also revealed that he keeps a photograph of Diana close and thinks about her pretty much every night and then most mornings. Harry also revealed that he keeps a photograph of Diana close and thinks about her pretty much every night and then most mornings. Looking at it, he said... I do.

3:36 I find myself looking at her and wondering what is she thinking about what I'm doing right now. At difficult moments, he asks, Hi, I need some help here. Guide me in the right way. The conversation also included his support for research into psychedelic-assisted therapy, particularly for veterans. Psychedelic-assisted therapy is no longer a fringe idea or thought. It's really becoming, I think, mainstream, he said. The conversation was filmed in California this summer before the Sussexes Return to Britain, Harry describes himself as a student of grief. He is also facing criticism for accepting payment to discuss his grief over Princess Diana's death in that new masterclass. Radar Online reports that journalist Tom Sykes and Harry's office confirmed he was paid for the appearance. His fee has not been disclosed.

4:26 The article cites unnamed industry sources claiming some celebrity deals can include $ 100, 000 up front and a share of royalties. Those figures have not been confirmed as Harry's terms. Some social media users accused him of cashing in on his mother's death. More Palace in just a moment. Before we get back to Palace, just a quick note from me. Megan has met Malala Yousafzai for tea at Claridge's in her first reported London sighting since returning to Britain. The Duchess and the Nobel Peace Prize winner were seen in the hotel's foyer and reading room on October 7th. Footage posted by another diner showed them sitting opposite one another engaged in conversation. It was a chance for a catch-up between friends, a source told People. Meghan and Harry previously joined Malala for a virtual discussion marking the International Day of the Girl in October of 2020.

6:06 Meghan's outfit for tea with Malala has drawn criticism online after the Daily Mail valued her clothing and accessories at approximately $ 37, 000. The Duchess wore a camel-tove coat over a cashmere sweater from CEO with cream Ralph Laurence satin trousers. She paired them with Saint Laurent loafers, a black Chanel handbag, and a diamond and emerald necklace by Logan Hollowell. The estimated total includes the jewelry and accessories rather than clothing alone. Some social media users questioned the expensive look, with one calling it a disaster. Visits to Meghan Markle's As Ever website fell by about 22% in September, ahead of the brand's holiday collection launch. Similar web estimates reported by Newsweek put September traffic at around 141,000 visits, down from roughly 182,000 in August. Weekly visits also declined from about 41,000 early in September to 24,000 in its final full week. And as Ever spokesperson described the movement as the normal ebb and flow of a consumer brand, product drops in PR create predictable spikes in engagement. They said, adding that they wouldn't read too much into a single period. The figures measure website visits rather than purchases, as ever has not released sales figures. August's final full week brought an estimated 71,000 visits, the site's strongest weekly total since January. The spokesperson predicted another significant spike around the advent calendar launch, calling that pattern consistent with how consumer marketing and e-commerce typically work.

7:38 Megan has supported the launch with a social media campaign telling followers... As I pinch myself looking at how this brand has grown, she feels very proud and grateful. Some social media users are accusing Meghan of Diana cosplay. The holiday campaign shows Meghan in an all-black outfit, her hair in a sleek ponytail, wearing a gold watch and a gold bangle. One commenter wrote, The deliberate mirroring of Diana's iconic shoots has crossed from weird to completely bizarre. And there you have it.
