Today’s episode discusses how personal passion and a great business idea led to a spot on Oprah's Favorite Things list while raising awareness of diversity among our young ones.
Our guest, Matthew Goins, created Puzzle Huddle in January 2018 with his wife’s support. Since childhood, Matthew has always had an itch for crafts, building things, and putting things together, so this comes naturally to him.
Frustrated with the need for more diverse images shown on commercially-produced puzzles, the family began creating unique ethnic-themed puzzle designs.
Matthew began by printing images from the internet and hand-cutting puzzles at home with scissors. A few dozen roughly cut puzzles later, he started looking for commercial printers to manufacture puzzles with images he commissioned from industry-leading artists. Puzzle Huddle is now proud to offer puzzles that showcase inclusive images that children and others will love.
Matthew shares the challenges of turning an idea into a family business and growing it from the dining table and boxes in hallways to a warehouse with multiple vendors. A robust social media presence helps busy parents and teachers raise kids through the rapidly evolving challenges of COVID.
‘’We are creating products that consider varied skin color, nationality, ethnicity, and cultures. There are many different ways the human body takes shape and form that we want to honor and respect. We try to offer products that support some of these different characteristics and broaden the concept of diversity that shows up in the human experience.‘’
Walking us through his journey, Mathew explains the jump between developing a craft that fills a passion and a full-time job that fills a market need and ultimately landed him a featured spot in the 2020 Oprah's Favorite Things list.
