67. "Music Is Its Own Consciousness" — Danny Beissel on 25 Years of Rock
Danny Beissel got signed to Warner Music Group at 34, watched his rock band Fosterchild burn bright and fizzle out, and rebuilt himself in Laguna Beach: sober, meditating every morning, and writing the most personal record of his life.
The Philly-born rock vocalist behind Fosterchild, the American Vinyl All Star Band, and now Featherborn joins Julian for a long-overdue conversation about writing anthemic songs that stay intimate, why licensing music is the new radio, and the phrase that changed how he moves through everything: you have a better grip with a loose hand. Danny opens up about recording at Nashville's Blackbird Studio with the late Charlie Colin and Scott Underwood of Train, four years of sobriety, and why the human aspect of live music is the one thing AI will never touch.
IN THIS CONVERSATION, WE GET INTO:
- Recording Featherborn at Nashville's Blackbird Studio with members of Train
- Why anthemic rock songs still need to feel intimate, and how to write them
- Licensing music as the new path in for rock artists in the streaming era
- The one life lesson from 25+ years in music: a better grip with a loose hand
- Getting sober, becoming a man of his word, and what he'd tell his 20-year-old self

I'm doing work. I'm a work in progress. And, you know, I'm not laying around all day or in a bar
Danny Beissel:all day. I'm, I'm doing what I, you, all you can do is what you can do. And once you do that,
Danny Beissel:I believe that the universe comes in and, you know, I, every morning I wake up, I'm like,
Danny Beissel:where do you want me? I'm on this wave. Send me that way, man. As soon as I started doing that,
Danny Beissel:it's like, you know, we can't control anything, man.
Julian Jones:they say you shouldn't meet your heroes but i couldn't resist the next guest on love's music
Julian Jones:is danny bisel local rock legend lead singer of the band foster child huge songs in the early 2000s
Julian Jones:after a brief hiatus and a couple other musical projects danny bisel is back with his new project
Julian Jones:featherborn available on all streaming platforms so with no further ado my friend my collaborator
Julian Jones:one of my personal heroes, Danny Bisel. We don't have a ton of FaceTime with each other,
Julian Jones:but you've been in like very important parts of my life, like scattered throughout the last 20
Julian Jones:years. So this is like huge that I have like a long form interview with you today.
Danny Beissel:Dude, I was grateful. Thank you for reaching out, man. I often think about you and I've been watching
Danny Beissel:what you've been doing and kudos for that, man. It's really great. And like I said earlier,
Danny Beissel:it's important to get to always talk music and stuff like that.
Julian Jones:For those of you who don't know, Danny and I have a few songs together, one of which being
Julian Jones:music books, the other being Pastor Mike on two of my older projects.
Julian Jones:We're not here talking about my projects.
Julian Jones:Let's talk about the recent stuff, man.
Julian Jones:Featherborn is a really cool project.
Julian Jones:There are so many iterations of you and you do them all at such a high level.
Julian Jones:But this most recent iteration feels like such an accurate snapshot of who you are today, both sonically, vocally, creatively.
Julian Jones:Can you tell me exactly what Featherborn is?
Julian Jones:That's your brainchild, your kind of like singer-songwriter project with your backing band?
Danny Beissel:Yeah, so Featherborn started really pre-pandemic, like 2018.
Danny Beissel:We made the record in Nashville.
Danny Beissel:I was down there with my friend Charlie and Scott.
Danny Beissel:got Underwood and Charlie Colleen.
Danny Beissel:Charlie's no longer with us.
Danny Beissel:So we went down there.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, I just had some songs and we went down.
Danny Beissel:We had a friend from out here who sent us down there
Danny Beissel:to Blackbird Studio in Nashville.
Danny Beissel:And we went down to do like an EP, like four songs.
Danny Beissel:And it's just the energy and the vibe
Danny Beissel:was really cooking down there.
Danny Beissel:So the guy's like, hey man, you got any more songs?
Danny Beissel:Stay down.
Danny Beissel:So we did.
Danny Beissel:And we actually wrote a couple down there,
Danny Beissel:which became Featherborn One,
Danny Beissel:which is about 10 songs.
Danny Beissel:We did a cover of Stay With Me on it.
Danny Beissel:And then the pandemic hit,
Danny Beissel:and we kind of had the album done,
Danny Beissel:and I released one of the songs from it.
Danny Beissel:And the pandemic, I didn't know what to do.
Danny Beissel:Now I should have released the whole album,
Danny Beissel:but in my mind, it's like you've got to tour the album.
Julian Jones:Anyway, so fast forward it.
Danny Beissel:We waited.
Danny Beissel:So actually, my friend Charlie passed, and we were doing a celebration of life.
Danny Beissel:And Scott produced the record, and he's the drummer for Featherborn.
Danny Beissel:And at his celebration of life, we were playing some of the songs from Train,
Danny Beissel:and we were doing his life journey.
Danny Beissel:So we did a couple of his bands, and Featherborn being one of them for Charlie.
Danny Beissel:And I don't know.
Danny Beissel:We all started looking at each other after it.
Danny Beissel:And then the end of 23, we decided to put it together.
Danny Beissel:So we got two other members, Curtis Mathewson,
Danny Beissel:who actually was producer of the first Train album,
Danny Beissel:and James Hamilton, a buddy of Curtis's from out here.
Danny Beissel:And then we finally formed Featherborn.
Danny Beissel:And we've been rocking it for about a year and a half
Danny Beissel:as this is the band, Featherborn.
Danny Beissel:So that's where we're at now.
Julian Jones:it's really cool I was trying to explain the sound
Julian Jones:but it's like everyone ever hear
Julian Jones:something and it's I want
Julian Jones:to try to like define it with what the sound
Julian Jones:is and there's things that I think I hear influence
Julian Jones:but at the end of the day it's really
Julian Jones:just like no
Julian Jones:nonsense rock music
Julian Jones:you know
Julian Jones:it's just it's there's a classic rock sound
Julian Jones:there's a leaning
Julian Jones:towards are you familiar with the band Rival Sons
Danny Beissel:yeah
Julian Jones:they're like a California band that sounds like a southern rock band
Danny Beissel:yeah they're cute i actually cover i think i cover one of their songs oh no that's the heathens
Danny Beissel:yeah a friend of mine i play with this violin player named emily v out here and she's
Danny Beissel:pretty friends with them i know a couple people are friends with those guys and i'd listen to
Julian Jones:them i love their sound i know it's like southern rock california it's pretty cool yeah yeah it's a
Julian Jones:southern rock by way of malibu yeah exactly that's great but yeah man but uh southern malibu
Julian Jones:Yeah. Well, the way you write songs, you write anthemic songs that are still intimate,
Julian Jones:which is really hard to do. I feel like when somebody's really peeling back the layers of
Julian Jones:their heart, I'm thinking, okay, guy on a stool with an acoustic guitar, just cutting himself
Julian Jones:open. And then when I think anthemic songs, I think, we will, we, you know, but you write,
Julian Jones:you have the intimacy on that, but the production is so big, they feel like anthemic songs.
Julian Jones:I can see 50,000 people in a field singing
Julian Jones:lighters in the air. I can
Julian Jones:see it.
Julian Jones:Where it was. Huge song.
Julian Jones:Am I getting the song right? There she was. I'm sorry.
Danny Beissel:Oh, there she was. Yeah.
Danny Beissel:The thing about that whole thing
Danny Beissel:was you nodded on the head. When I came
Danny Beissel:up with
Danny Beissel:those songs, six
Danny Beissel:off the record I brought in just from
Danny Beissel:me and the acoustics.
Danny Beissel:After
Danny Beissel:Foster Child, I did a deep dive into
Danny Beissel:I mean, I always wrote from my truth and everything, but Featherborne 1 was just songs that I had, just a product of growing up listening to the music. I never really deemed myself as a songwriter to that point, but it was just like I just opened up and did it. So they did come from the heart. So I appreciate you saying that.
Danny Beissel:And when I went to Nashville with Scott and Charlie, I mean, that production is really, and Blackbird Studio, that production was them.
Danny Beissel:They really sprinkled some magic on those songs that I really give them such credit for.
Danny Beissel:It was really amazing what they did to them.
Danny Beissel:I'm so grateful that the album turned out.
Danny Beissel:And I really appreciate you saying that because that's what I was aiming for.
Julian Jones:Here's a decent parallel. The same accessibility
Julian Jones:of a...
Julian Jones:Oh, it's like an oasis, right? You know they're
Julian Jones:writing songs for crowds of 50,000
Julian Jones:people.
Julian Jones:They're accessible, but they're
Julian Jones:very accessible songs, but there's something
Julian Jones:intimate about them. You know what I mean?
Julian Jones:You can see somebody covering an oasis song
Julian Jones:just by themselves in a dirty bar.
Julian Jones:But it's so accessible
Julian Jones:it'll resonate with somebody in Canada,
Julian Jones:Florida, Australia,
Julian Jones:Paris.
Julian Jones:They just resonate globally.
Danny Beissel:I think the whole thing through that, man, is I think when it resonates like that, it's something that they carved out from like the truth and deep within all.
Danny Beissel:Because when that when you tap into that, it's a very powerful thing that's going to work in a simple bar.
Danny Beissel:It's going to work in a giant stadium.
Danny Beissel:And plus, they're great writers.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:The bros.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, right.
Julian Jones:Well, isn't that the goal, right?
Julian Jones:Like you're making the people that I think do really well,
Julian Jones:at least recently are the people that continue to make accessible and are not
Julian Jones:accessible.
Julian Jones:They make experimental music that happens to be accessible as opposed to going
Julian Jones:in through like the hit factory and being like, all right,
Julian Jones:I'm going to write songs in the same,
Julian Jones:in the same chords that everybody else is going to be your dance party song.
Julian Jones:It's like,
Julian Jones:I feel like now people are doing weird stuff and it's like landing in my news
Julian Jones:feed and being like, Oh, this is cool.
Danny Beissel:You know?
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:And I think the whole, you know, it's like,
Danny Beissel:I was listening to Rick Rubin a bit ago and looking through his book and he said some brilliant
Danny Beissel:things, which I agree with is like, and sometimes it gets misinterpreted. Like you don't write for
Danny Beissel:the audience and you can't, you got to write for yourself. And like the truth of, you know,
Danny Beissel:I try to get as close, you know, the truth as I can, whatever that is in me and hope it resonates.
Danny Beissel:But at the same time, I got to be like, like right now this new album we're writing. It's like,
Danny Beissel:I'm getting a little more atmospheric, like in a sense of not like so much radio head,
Danny Beissel:but like kind of leaning towards a place because I want to like, you know, I've been doing a lot
Danny Beissel:of rock and roll. I'm a rock and roller, but I want to like, I want to change it up. And what
Danny Beissel:instruments are new today? You know, so I could keep my, I could keep my honesty as a songwriter,
Danny Beissel:but I can still tap into like sounds that are new and interesting. And that's kind of like what I'm
Danny Beissel:starting to dive in now and so you know that's the fun of it like if the song gets me high
Danny Beissel:and it's like moves me that's that's truly the only way i can like and if i deliver it vulnerable
Danny Beissel:you know through truth it's like if it resonates with people that's when you got something that's
Julian Jones:like well art's not just the playing it's it's the execution but also the taste what makes us
Julian Jones:good artists isn't the ability to say g sharp a b flat it's the ability to be like oh it's we have
Julian Jones:taste that other people don't have some people get a perfect spiral like we hear things that other
Julian Jones:people don't you know like yes we take a blank we take empty air and we put certain sounds into it
Julian Jones:that we know is cool but other people don't know the difference between uh a whistle and a bass drum
Danny Beissel:yeah well that's that's the cool part about it and then you're just like you know like um
Danny Beissel:and within that we keep it simple yes so it's easy for people to grab on to but uh that is a
Danny Beissel:cool thing it's a that's been one of the coolest things for me really um doing a lot of gigs
Danny Beissel:and playing the featherborn album and you know and doing we've been playing some of our new songs
Danny Beissel:but doing some especially out here you know i'm not from here i'm from philly i've been out here a
Danny Beissel:couple years and the more we play and i'm looking at someone like resonate with like whether it's
Danny Beissel:blush or there she was or something and then i'll see them like saying the words and i'm like wow
Danny Beissel:and then i'm like and then you hear what it means to them like that's the coolest thing for me it's
Danny Beissel:like what they think it means and it's the coolest thing for me when i hear someone else's song and i
Danny Beissel:have my interpretation of it and um so that's like uh that that that's a cool feeling man is the way
Danny Beissel:you're right because we're we're making this song like this and we have this whole life around it
Danny Beissel:As soon as we take it and we give it away, it's out in the ether.
Danny Beissel:Right.
Danny Beissel:It's not ours anymore.
Danny Beissel:It's not ours anymore.
Danny Beissel:It's ours.
Danny Beissel:You know, it's like, but that's the beautiful part about it.
Danny Beissel:You're just sending vibrations out.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:Hopefully good ones.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:Hopefully good ones, right?
Julian Jones:As somebody who's been making music, quality music for quarter century plus, can you still
Julian Jones:listen to music objectively?
Julian Jones:Like I just put on a cool song.
Julian Jones:Are you always in like creator artist mode?
Julian Jones:Can you still be deeply moved by secular music?
Danny Beissel:You know, it's funny, man.
Danny Beissel:It's funny I ask that, Jules.
Danny Beissel:I've been writing for the last, I guess the last year since we've put Featherborn, this version together.
Danny Beissel:So I'm always caught up in listening to the stuff I put down.
Danny Beissel:But I try to listen to new music, too, just because I think that's important.
Danny Beissel:But it's kind of interesting.
Danny Beissel:It's funny because, say, last year, I mean, I've listened to the David Bowie since I was probably, I don't know, 10 years old or since I could hear because my older brothers had the record.
Danny Beissel:But a year or so ago, it hit me in a different way where I did this deep dive into early Bowie and songs that I knew, but I'm like, I was so getting this nostalgia high.
Danny Beissel:It took me that long for this deeper window to open into it.
Danny Beissel:And that was like a year and a half ago.
Danny Beissel:And right now, I just put the guitar down.
Danny Beissel:I'm going through this crazy Radiohead phase.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:Like I'm doing this deep, you know, I've been listening to Radiohead.
Danny Beissel:I know they've been out there, but I just, so for me, it's like certain music hits me
Danny Beissel:at different times.
Danny Beissel:So meanwhile, I'm like going down this Radiohead rabbit hole.
Danny Beissel:I'm still keeping my pulse on some new music because, you know, it's kind of like if something
Danny Beissel:hits me and it hits me hard like that i have to follow it because i feel like the universe is
Danny Beissel:telling me something yeah like if i'm going down this rabbit hole and i'm like oh my god and i'm
Danny Beissel:getting this nostalgia high off this music that's been around for a while or some you know sometimes
Danny Beissel:it'll be someone will play me a new song and i'll hit me like who is this band i'll do a deep dive
Danny Beissel:so right now it's like i'm just like this open thing and when the vibration from one band comes
Danny Beissel:in that either hits me the way where I'm attracted
Danny Beissel:to it. I hope that made sense.
Julian Jones:No, no, it does.
Julian Jones:There's something to be said for
Julian Jones:posturing. I'll give you an example.
Julian Jones:I remember, I saw this band live
Julian Jones:just because they were at every festival. They were always
Julian Jones:playing in the middle of the day.
Julian Jones:I just saw them a bunch of times.
Julian Jones:This was Death Cab, right? Death Cab for
Julian Jones:Cutie, Vancouver.
Julian Jones:I saw them maybe three times
Julian Jones:and then one day I saw them in
Julian Jones:2015.
Julian Jones:Sun is setting. I heard
Julian Jones:Atlanticism, he was like hearing the band for the first time.
Julian Jones:And I was like, I'm telling you, dude, it's the coolest thing.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:It's like you weren't ready for it when you first heard it.
Danny Beissel:You know, it's something.
Danny Beissel:I mean, I don't know what it is.
Danny Beissel:I just enjoy when it happens.
Danny Beissel:And it's like, it's like this nostalgia high, just like I'm in like this dreamland.
Danny Beissel:Like I shut my door and I'm just, just learning the tunes.
Danny Beissel:And I don't, I don't, I just let it happen because I think it's like, it's letting me
Danny Beissel:know that I should be.
Danny Beissel:That's what I said about like, you know, it's affecting,
Danny Beissel:we're writing a couple of new songs and,
Danny Beissel:and it's affecting me in that sense where I'm thinking like, well,
Danny Beissel:let me think about that.
Danny Beissel:Let me stay on that.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Atmospheric vibe for a minute.
Danny Beissel:And that's the fun, man.
Danny Beissel:Cause we're just creating great, you know, we're creating music.
Danny Beissel:So it's kind of like,
Danny Beissel:we have to be open to whatever's coming in new or old, you know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:So it's like,
Julian Jones:there's something to be, it's like the value of stillness,
Julian Jones:the value to be open to not just being like,
Julian Jones:you know, the hammer and the nail.
Julian Jones:Sometimes you just got to like sit still and just kind of like let it happen.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:It's like all, all, all that is in there. Yeah.
Julian Jones:It's one of my favorite things about myself.
Julian Jones:The fact that I can still be like deeply affected by like new artists,
Julian Jones:you know, do you think you'd be jaded? Everything was down derivative.
Julian Jones:For instance,
Julian Jones:I think the last artist that just like got their hook in me.
Julian Jones:Are you familiar with Joy Oda-Lacoon?
Julian Jones:No.
Julian Jones:A folk, folk artist, a black woman.
Julian Jones:I believe she's from Nashville, but moved.
Julian Jones:Absolutely incredible.
Julian Jones:I listened to her album on the way to my parents.
Julian Jones:And it was like a spiritual experience.
Julian Jones:It was unbelievable.
Julian Jones:The point I'm trying to make is you can still be effective.
Julian Jones:What I think people don't realize is unless you're making music for 15 and 16-year-olds
Julian Jones:and you're their first artist, we're out here as artists almost trying to get market share
Julian Jones:from people who already have a favorite artist.
Julian Jones:So you have these new artists that are coming in and are saying, okay, this is the dozen artists you listen to.
Julian Jones:I have to take one of their spots.
Julian Jones:So I guess the question is, what does it take for an artist to really connect with somebody?
Julian Jones:Like the artists that you've seen that just popped up and just resonated with large groups of people.
Julian Jones:What do you think they have that you'd be able to impart to younger artists in terms of perspective?
Julian Jones:Like, this is what you have to do to gain favor in this community or to gain impact in this community.
Danny Beissel:You know, I'd say right off the bat, you know, don't write for that community.
Danny Beissel:As we said earlier, like, you got to find your truth, write your vibe.
Danny Beissel:And it's not like being selfish.
Danny Beissel:It's being artistic.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:You can't write for somebody else.
Danny Beissel:So find your vibe, find your sound, really.
Danny Beissel:And be honest with it.
Danny Beissel:And to get in the community, I mean, now it's so different.
Danny Beissel:You could literally now, you could go and find your favorite artists and kind of like on the streaming platforms and jump onto like playlists and stuff like that.
Danny Beissel:But everything costs money.
Danny Beissel:So right now to try to break into it, like I keep saying, and I'm doing the same thing.
Danny Beissel:I'm such a, like, even the way I write and play is like very just old school rock and roll, but I'm always looking for a new sound.
Danny Beissel:You know, I can only write what I know and what, and what my feel is, but I can grab new sounds.
Danny Beissel:So if you're listening to these, if you're, you're trying to find your way through, if you have like, I love these artists, they turn me on, you know, figure out their, and if you feel like, find out what you sound like.
Danny Beissel:Right.
Danny Beissel:And like find artists that you think you compliment with, like you, that you, um, you match with a little bit in yourself and go, go on there, you know what I mean? Try to find a playlist with them on it or something like that. But you know, it's, it's, uh, it's an interesting time because we're all trying to navigate through this, this, uh, digital world of music. It's kind of like, you got to find how to navigate through what you're trying to get.
Danny Beissel:for me you know I uh I left Philadelphia I moved out here and I you know I got this new record well
Danny Beissel:it's not new now but when I had featherworn one and I'm trying to like how do I get in and I was
Danny Beissel:doing that I was getting on some playlist but it's like it wasn't really I felt like I was paying
Danny Beissel:money like greasing the DJ old school you know and uh for me you know I I had uh blush was put in a
Danny Beissel:like a rom-com and and i saw a little movement on it you know it wasn't it went straight to dvd and
Danny Beissel:all but i was like hmm so it kind of like licensing yeah that's what i'm that's why i moved out here
Danny Beissel:try to license some music and that's what i'm working when i go in to record now it's a it's
Danny Beissel:a licensing licensing deal because um you know the only way i could feel to break through quicker than
Danny Beissel:the old school record label radio, which kind of really doesn't exist anymore, is getting
Danny Beissel:placed in a commercial or movies or something like that.
Danny Beissel:Now, that's a big jump.
Danny Beissel:I mean, if I was 20 years old and in a band, just go, man.
Danny Beissel:That hasn't changed.
Danny Beissel:Get in the van.
Danny Beissel:Go.
Danny Beissel:You got to play.
Danny Beissel:I can't stress playing out live is so important right now for young bands.
Danny Beissel:play play play play play like shut and rehearse be like yeah be as best because you're you got to
Danny Beissel:remember you're up against so much right out there right now and there's so much more out there because
Danny Beissel:now everybody can jump on and put on their video which is cool man you know everybody's got a voice
Danny Beissel:in a sense and i would also say a really cool thing would be you know if you're trying to break
Danny Beissel:into this vibe like you know there's so many like you could go on and be like you know is there a
Danny Beissel:group that loves this band you tap into that hey man i gotta when you check out my record i mean as
Danny Beissel:much as like the digital era is like oh my god how am i going to navigate through this there's always
Danny Beissel:a negative and positive to everything so the negative being like a guy like me i'm like well
Danny Beissel:wait a minute we get signed and we get radio and that's you know that that that's not around anymore
Danny Beissel:so and so it's kind of like i have to navigate the digital era so i landed on licensing but
Danny Beissel:because I have some records out there that you know possibly hopefully can can do that for me
Danny Beissel:like I say play live because you're not getting a lot of that and and and be the best that you can
Danny Beissel:at your craft because you know a lot of times there's a lot of uh you know you know I think
Danny Beissel:now you can literally play live and have like a tuner on your microphone yeah and you know that's
Danny Beissel:fine i guess for whoever wants to do that but like the one thing you'll never get away from is the
Danny Beissel:human experience music is feeling it's vibration it it's a it's like its own consciousness sometimes
Danny Beissel:and you can't get away from that live and ai will never do it'll never recreate that human aspect
Danny Beissel:so it's kind of like you know i wish i had something to say to say you know do this and
Danny Beissel:that and that and that it's just not there right now you kind of just you got to do it because you
Danny Beissel:love it you got to write from your heart and you got to just you got to play you got to be active
Danny Beissel:you know you can be active on the you know the uh you know and these young kids now they know
Danny Beissel:the computer so much better than like yeah and it's like so with that you you also need that
Danny Beissel:the live aspect get in the van go see the your cities and you know yeah when i was in philly i
Danny Beissel:played philly and then i played the tri-state area and i got lucky and we got signed and then
Danny Beissel:we did the country there's nothing in the world like that and then you're just meeting people so
Danny Beissel:like being an internet mogul and all that's fine having music on that that's great too but you you
Danny Beissel:know if you have both then you really got it so i guess my answer that question in a in a in a
Danny Beissel:roundabout way is um to break into that find out you know like you said like you know break into
Danny Beissel:those kind of bands that you love and that and what's happening would be like find out who's
Danny Beissel:listening to them and that's the power we have on you know on the internet you could be like
Danny Beissel:what algorithms and all that like there the data is there so it's like you know come at it this way
Danny Beissel:opposed to this way like hey you know instagram has somebody playing music hey check out my record
Danny Beissel:you know check out my song or or tiktok tiktok's probably the better one that's like
Julian Jones:I guess. Yeah, I think, I don't know.
Danny Beissel:I mean, I'm not that
Danny Beissel:dabbing on which one to do, but
Danny Beissel:somebody keeps saying TikTok is actually
Julian Jones:one of the better ones. Yeah, it's all
Julian Jones:amazed to me. Yeah.
Julian Jones:Foster Child was like, I mean, you
Julian Jones:guys had a seat at the table, right?
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:It was like a super group with Octane
Julian Jones:and you, basically, it was the two guys
Julian Jones:from... Yeah.
Julian Jones:Brian from Octane and yourself
Julian Jones:at LEED. I met Brian
Danny Beissel:down to South Street in Philly back in like,
Danny Beissel:I think it was around 2003 or 2004 when I met Brian.
Danny Beissel:And, you know, Octane.
Danny Beissel:So obviously I loved Octane, Philly,
Danny Beissel:a massive band in Philly, actually all around that area.
Danny Beissel:I don't know if they toured or they did shows with Fuel.
Danny Beissel:So the drummer of Fuel, Kevin Miller,
Danny Beissel:became friends with Brian Quinn.
Danny Beissel:And those guys were always talking about jamming.
Danny Beissel:And I met Brian and we started, you know,
Danny Beissel:hanging out and writing and, you know,
Danny Beissel:Like I was never, you know, I just, I really became a songwriter with Brian.
Danny Beissel:You know, I messed around with it before that, but Brian really opened that up in me.
Danny Beissel:Cause I was new to music.
Danny Beissel:I was, you know, I became a musician in my early twenties.
Danny Beissel:So Kevin left fuel and him and Brian started jamming.
Danny Beissel:And Brian's like, Hey man, I know the singer.
Danny Beissel:And I know this bass player who is Eric Lenhart from Jersey.
Danny Beissel:And we got, we went to Kevin's, got in a room and start playing.
Danny Beissel:And that was it.
Danny Beissel:That was awesome.
Danny Beissel:That was a killer.
Danny Beissel:That was so fun that I was able to do that four-piece rock and roll band.
Danny Beissel:I mean, that was such a rock band.
Julian Jones:Dude, that's another thing.
Julian Jones:I remember write-ups about Foster Child.
Julian Jones:It was like this commoditization of music was happening.
Julian Jones:The boy band thing was starting to die.
Julian Jones:Now it's kind of like these dance pop records.
Julian Jones:Hip-hop is like commercial hip-hop.
Julian Jones:And they're like, here's a band that is just all attitude.
Julian Jones:That's how they wrote about you guys.
Julian Jones:And I was like, yeah, that tracks.
Julian Jones:four bad dudes
Julian Jones:with killer songs
Julian Jones:that are going to smack you in the mouth
Danny Beissel:for a sec.
Danny Beissel:And drink whiskey with you.
Julian Jones:Yes, and drink whiskey.
Julian Jones:That's actually how we met.
Julian Jones:Yeah, yeah, I know.
Julian Jones:Do you remember, was it the gig
Julian Jones:at
Julian Jones:the Roosevelt Boulevard place
Julian Jones:or was it Whiskey Tango? You guys played a gig and then we
Julian Jones:hung and that's how I met you.
Julian Jones:I think it was
Danny Beissel:Tango. I mean, we played
Danny Beissel:both of those places but i remember hanging with you at whiskey tango because i remember
Danny Beissel:you did an event there and i jumped up with you and i think we were saying like this is where we
Danny Beissel:met yeah i think you were there with brian lee i think yeah yeah yeah so to tango and i think
Danny Beissel:that's where we met bro yeah that's so funny that was a great spot yeah man well here's here's a
Julian Jones:funny moment i don't even know if you remember it i don't i forget where we at the night before
Julian Jones:but I was living on Sylvania Avenue
Julian Jones:and I think you had family in Glenside
Julian Jones:and Brian wasn't even with me.
Julian Jones:At this point, me and you were already cool.
Julian Jones:We had a song together
Julian Jones:and we were doing something
Julian Jones:and then we just went back to the house
Julian Jones:and my roommates, we were all a little bit wild.
Julian Jones:There's maybe six or seven of us.
Julian Jones:Like the house was like rocking around 1.30 to o'clock.
Julian Jones:You come knocking at the door.
Julian Jones:I'm like, oh, it's Danny.
Julian Jones:This is my dad.
Julian Jones:My roommates haven't met you before.
Julian Jones:So you come in, you sit down on a beanbag.
Julian Jones:You played like six songs
Julian Jones:and I was like, hey man,
Julian Jones:you want to drink anything?
Julian Jones:You're like,
Julian Jones:I think I'm going to get out of here.
Julian Jones:You literally came over
Julian Jones:like six songs
Julian Jones:at 10 o'clock in the morning
Julian Jones:and left.
Julian Jones:And everybody was like,
Julian Jones:did that just happen?
Danny Beissel:They're like,
Danny Beissel:do we dream that?
Danny Beissel:I had to get it out
Danny Beissel:at two in the morning
Danny Beissel:and I had to be on a beanbag
Danny Beissel:at your place.
Danny Beissel:I'm like,
Danny Beissel:I don't even know
Danny Beissel:who remembers this.
Julian Jones:It was after real.
Julian Jones:Like in the morning,
Julian Jones:like in the morning.
Julian Jones:There was a skinny blonde guy
Julian Jones:that came up by
Julian Jones:and played by a blanky dude
Danny Beissel:that stopped by
Danny Beissel:to Saturday.
Julian Jones:think about it from my roommate's perspective
Danny Beissel:you're like here's a guy with a guitar
Danny Beissel:and I was like oh that's my buddy
Danny Beissel:you know what I do remember
Danny Beissel:that I don't know where the hell I mean I'm sure I was
Danny Beissel:you know
Danny Beissel:I was had a couple
Danny Beissel:yeah
Danny Beissel:it was in 2000
Danny Beissel:that's cool man
Danny Beissel:yeah
Danny Beissel:sometimes you just gotta stop by your boy's house
Danny Beissel:and just whip a guitar out and start jamming
Danny Beissel:and rolling
Julian Jones:as a matter of fact I think
Julian Jones:my wife was actually at the house then like we weren't we weren't dating or dating theater at
Julian Jones:the time but i think she was actually there and had that memory too it was like we have this like
Julian Jones:memory from like with like with like danny bison yeah that's awesome yeah i'm wondering what i can
Julian Jones:play you had a couple staples um when i used to see you do covers with uh brian clay you would play
Julian Jones:Hallelujah
Julian Jones:you would play
Julian Jones:what's
Julian Jones:the song from Reservoir Dog
Julian Jones:Ryan would sing lead on that one
Julian Jones:you would sing Karma Police
Julian Jones:and it was like my favorite
Julian Jones:I think I liked your cover better than the original
Danny Beissel:that's funny see I was doing
Julian Jones:Radiohead back then it's just hitting me now
Julian Jones:I saw that set
Julian Jones:that I'm talking about at Kildare's
Julian Jones:you remember you used to play Kildare's on South Street
Julian Jones:I love Kildare's
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:The Killed Heirs on South Street?
Julian Jones:Yeah, there's one.
Julian Jones:It's almost, it's not quite front.
Julian Jones:It might be, it might've been second,
Julian Jones:but I know it's almost towards Ben Landon.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:No, it was Head House Square.
Julian Jones:Really?
Danny Beissel:It wasn't Killed Heirs?
Danny Beissel:Yeah, yeah.
Danny Beissel:It was right across from where
Danny Beissel:Boys the Men did that video.
Danny Beissel:Remember, they're walking under the pillars.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, it's Head House Square.
Danny Beissel:It was Killed Heirs.
Danny Beissel:I used to love playing there.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, Brian and I used to play there all the time.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, man.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Then it was called Get Happy.
Danny Beissel:Remember that?
Danny Beissel:I know it was called that.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Or Get Happy or something happy.
Danny Beissel:I think it was Get Happy.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:We're going to Get Happy.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:It was called Some Dude Bought It.
Danny Beissel:And it was kind of cool.
Julian Jones:It was really played there.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:It was kind of fizzled out.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:Marketing genius there.
Julian Jones:Sounds rolled off the tongue.
Julian Jones:For sure, right?
Julian Jones:In a quarter century of making music, what is the most valuable lesson you learned?
Julian Jones:About music or just life?
Danny Beissel:Life, art, people?
Danny Beissel:Well, I guess you have a better grip with a loose hand.
Danny Beissel:That's how I can sum that up.
Danny Beissel:The minute I stopped trying to, I need this piece to move over here and this piece to move over here.
Danny Beissel:Then all of a sudden I'm like this.
Danny Beissel:I just went, you got a better grip with a loose hand.
Danny Beissel:You got to kind of just like, that which grows simpler always grows better.
Danny Beissel:And as soon as I did that and I just gave it over to the universe, as long as I show up, I'm doing work.
Danny Beissel:I'm a work in progress and, you know, I'm not laying around all day or in a bar all day.
Danny Beissel:I'm, I'm doing what I, you, all you can do is what you can do.
Danny Beissel:And once you do that, I believe that the universe comes in and, you know, I, every morning I
Danny Beissel:wake up, I'm like, where do you want me?
Danny Beissel:I'm on this wave.
Danny Beissel:Send me that way, man.
Danny Beissel:As soon as I started doing that, Jules, it's like, you know, we can't control anything,
Danny Beissel:man.
Danny Beissel:All we can do is be on a high vibration, which means like, you know, what's a low vibration?
Danny Beissel:Like anger and frustration, like high vibration.
Danny Beissel:Like it's all good, man.
Danny Beissel:And warmth.
Danny Beissel:Not to sound like a guru, but like in a sense, like as soon as I shot it, stop trying to put a square in a circle hole and just let it flow.
Danny Beissel:And that goes with everything, dude, my writing and my everyday life.
Danny Beissel:So I guess I'd say you have a better grip with a loose hand.
Danny Beissel:I love that.
Julian Jones:I love that.
Julian Jones:If you could have the knowledge you have today and implant yourself at any point in your career,
Julian Jones:almost like time-acuse style, with the knowledge you have now,
Julian Jones:where would you implant yourself and what would you do different?
Danny Beissel:Oh, man, what a quest.
Danny Beissel:That's something I probably think about twice a week.
Danny Beissel:I was pretty green in my 20s.
Danny Beissel:I didn't know a lot.
Danny Beissel:So I would plant myself in my 20s.
Danny Beissel:Look, my journey is my journey.
Danny Beissel:I'm happy I wouldn't change anything.
Danny Beissel:But if we could do that, I'd probably go back to my 20s.
Danny Beissel:And knowing what I know now, I would look at things a lot different.
Danny Beissel:I would protect my voice a lot more.
Danny Beissel:sometimes when you're 20, I could be out for three nights
Danny Beissel:partying and still sing the highest notes of all time.
Danny Beissel:But I just didn't know.
Danny Beissel:I was just greening at it.
Danny Beissel:I would go back in my 20s
Danny Beissel:and I would start digging in
Danny Beissel:and I would become...
Danny Beissel:I guess I would be more of an original artist early on
Danny Beissel:because I became an original artist.
Danny Beissel:probably, I mean, I got signed
Danny Beissel:I was 34
Julian Jones:that's actually pretty impressive
Danny Beissel:yeah, I mean, I was pretty late
Danny Beissel:in a career, but it was like
Danny Beissel:I remember being like, if I'm 35, I'm
Danny Beissel:switching the route
Danny Beissel:I got signed at 34, so it was like
Danny Beissel:thanks to the guys, because you know
Danny Beissel:when we started Foster Child, it was like
Danny Beissel:we were fanatic, you show me a fanatic
Danny Beissel:I'll show you success, like we were fanatical
Danny Beissel:we were like up Kevin's
Danny Beissel:but you know, we were practicing all day
Danny Beissel:me and Brian were going home and
Danny Beissel:and right until four in the morning and then going back to kevin's we were like
Danny Beissel:so it was like yeah that's because you know it's what you put in is what you get out man it's like
Danny Beissel:it's an important thing and i and i give a lot of credit to the guys you know foster child brian
Danny Beissel:and like because i was so aloof you know so it was like um just getting in there and
Danny Beissel:just getting your getting your sound tight you know like even a gig we were doing in featherboard
Danny Beissel:that's so important
Danny Beissel:and that's
Danny Beissel:that's something
Danny Beissel:I would tell my young self
Danny Beissel:that I know now
Danny Beissel:is like
Danny Beissel:behind the scenes
Danny Beissel:do the work
Danny Beissel:because when you're on stage
Danny Beissel:you don't have to think about that
Danny Beissel:if you did all the work
Danny Beissel:you need practice
Danny Beissel:and all that stuff
Danny Beissel:so when you're coming out on stage
Danny Beissel:you don't have to think about anything
Danny Beissel:but just
Danny Beissel:relaxing
Danny Beissel:and just
Danny Beissel:and just letting it flow through you
Danny Beissel:and come out
Danny Beissel:and knowing all that stuff's there
Danny Beissel:the lyrics are there
Danny Beissel:your beats are there
Danny Beissel:your timing's there
Danny Beissel:you know when they come in
Danny Beissel:when you know
Danny Beissel:all that
Danny Beissel:that stuff that shouldn't come out
Danny Beissel:in a performance.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:I remember
Julian Jones:we saw you open
Julian Jones:for Cross Freed
Julian Jones:and Buck Perry
Julian Jones:and you couldn't tell
Julian Jones:who the headliner was.
Julian Jones:Intensity never dropped off.
Julian Jones:Like you guys,
Julian Jones:I think you guys were first,
Julian Jones:obviously.
Julian Jones:It was like,
Julian Jones:it was like I was watching
Julian Jones:like,
Julian Jones:I'm like,
Julian Jones:oh,
Julian Jones:that's my,
Julian Jones:that's a star,
Julian Jones:but it's my board.
Julian Jones:That's,
Julian Jones:oh,
Julian Jones:that's,
Julian Jones:no,
Julian Jones:I'm like,
Julian Jones:I'm watching it happen.
Julian Jones:You know what I mean?
Julian Jones:Croc Rock?
Julian Jones:In Allentown.
Julian Jones:Yeah,
Julian Jones:yeah.
Julian Jones:Crocodile Rock in Allentown?
Julian Jones:You remember that night?
Danny Beissel:Yeah, I do.
Danny Beissel:You guys are incredible.
Danny Beissel:Thanks, man.
Julian Jones:That was a fun one.
Julian Jones:Yeah, I'm like,
Danny Beissel:it's a great band, dude.
Danny Beissel:4pm, man.
Danny Beissel:Just Brian and Eric.
Danny Beissel:It was kind of interesting
Danny Beissel:because now I'm,
Danny Beissel:the way I write's like,
Danny Beissel:finding all these sub-melodies
Danny Beissel:and everything,
Danny Beissel:and the way they went at it,
Danny Beissel:it was like Brian would have a riff,
Danny Beissel:and Eric would double it,
Danny Beissel:and it was just this wall of like,
Danny Beissel:just,
Danny Beissel:gah,
Danny Beissel:coming at you.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:It was a rad band, man.
Julian Jones:And it's funny how perception changes because you can look at that band and you're going to be like, oh, this is like a throwback to like Guns N' Roses and 90s stuff.
Julian Jones:And then in hindsight, you're like, oh, no, you were kind of doing the stuff that Youngblood's doing now, you know, like in terms of like screaming, scratching wood stuff and like the high energy, like rock is like anthemic stuff.
Julian Jones:So it's timing.
Danny Beissel:Man, it's so cyclical.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, man.
Danny Beissel:Youngblood, that's right.
Danny Beissel:He is doing all that, man.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Julian Jones:I was like, look at this guy. I'm like,
Julian Jones:don't look at my boy Danny though.
Julian Jones:Well, thanks.
Julian Jones:A young boy could run.
Julian Jones:Yeah.
Julian Jones:Speaking of that,
Julian Jones:so when you see somebody,
Julian Jones:the same way I was seeing your performances
Julian Jones:and other people alike, and I'm like,
Julian Jones:some people just have it. Obviously, it's hard
Julian Jones:work, and you have to have great songs.
Julian Jones:You have to have some kind of aptitude and work ethic.
Julian Jones:Some people just have it.
Danny Beissel:In your opinion,
Danny Beissel:what does it get?
Danny Beissel:I don't know if it looks like anything.
Danny Beissel:I think it's more feel.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:Like for me, whatever that is, you know, I don't think anybody knows, oh, it's this, this and that.
Danny Beissel:Right.
Danny Beissel:It's just, and it all, to me, it comes from when someone's very expressing their truth.
Danny Beissel:Like that's what gets you.
Danny Beissel:Even if you're seeing an artist and they only have 10 seconds of complete relaxation and their true self comes out because they're nervous, that's all it takes sometimes.
Danny Beissel:Like, oh, shit.
Danny Beissel:It's like a window to their soul.
Danny Beissel:And the only thing you have to offer is the thing that's uniquely you.
Danny Beissel:So there's no facade.
Danny Beissel:So whatever it is, I believe it means that person is being honest.
Danny Beissel:and you're getting the trueness of them.
Danny Beissel:And then they, you know, and it's not,
Danny Beissel:usually it's not one thing.
Danny Beissel:It's how they sound, you know,
Danny Beissel:their voice comes out and their movement
Danny Beissel:and what they're not doing.
Danny Beissel:You got to remember that.
Danny Beissel:It's not all about what you're doing.
Danny Beissel:Sometimes it's when you're not doing anything,
Danny Beissel:when you know the power of silence,
Danny Beissel:the power of not playing at that moment
Danny Beissel:and letting it breathe.
Danny Beissel:It's trusting.
Danny Beissel:trust in the moment sometimes the moment's not a note or a voice and i think all of that
Danny Beissel:and you know for me it's like if i see that i'm like whoa but it really comes down to the person's
Danny Beissel:vibration i guess like you either vibrate vibrate with them or you don't
Danny Beissel:and you got someone like well take like elvis presley i mean like
Danny Beissel:wow you know one of the biggest artists of our time and it's like what was that and i remember
Danny Beissel:I mean, my first thing I ever did was called the Elvis experience.
Danny Beissel:I did a rockabilly thing.
Danny Beissel:I had short hair and moving my legs and shit.
Danny Beissel:And it kind of like through his voice, I found mine.
Danny Beissel:I was almost doing Elvis as a characterization, trying to find out what is it that makes this
Danny Beissel:guy like, why is he's driving everybody crazy?
Danny Beissel:What is it?
Danny Beissel:And through like, as like an actor's perspective, it was humility.
Danny Beissel:He was truly humble.
Danny Beissel:He would make fun of them.
Danny Beissel:He was truly humble and people couldn't fathom it.
Danny Beissel:I mean, that's what I came up with, anybody.
Danny Beissel:So it's kind of like not taking yourself too serious.
Danny Beissel:I mean, look at Youngblood.
Danny Beissel:He's this dude.
Danny Beissel:You can't not look at that guy and be excited
Danny Beissel:because he's just having a good time
Danny Beissel:because he takes the stage like,
Danny Beissel:oh my God, what's happening?
Danny Beissel:It's the first time it's happening
Danny Beissel:and the last time it's happening.
Danny Beissel:And it's the best.
Danny Beissel:I always say that to everybody, like if you're on stage like this, that's what people are going to feel.
Danny Beissel:If you're like this and that, then they're like, they want to leave.
Danny Beissel:You never let them see you sweat.
Danny Beissel:It's always positive.
Danny Beissel:And like, and that's why that guy's shining because like, you never see it.
Danny Beissel:He's just always like, you know, every time I, I, I seen the guy on TV or something, I don't know a lot about him, but I'm like, ah, that guy's got like a, there's something about that guy.
Danny Beissel:And it's like what you're saying, it, whatever it is.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:And I think it's a combination of things.
Danny Beissel:To be quite honest, I think it could be a God-given thing maybe.
Danny Beissel:I don't know.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:And it's kind of like, but I think it all boils down to find it if you have it or not.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:It's still got to come out of relaxation, truth, and honesty, and sincerity.
Danny Beissel:Absolutely.
Julian Jones:Absolutely. It's almost like, I remember
Julian Jones:seeing
Julian Jones:Post Malone, to kind of add to your point.
Julian Jones:And I'm listening, and I'm looking at his catalog
Julian Jones:and I'm in like the Wells Fargo Center at this point.
Julian Jones:Now he's like the guy. He was having a huge
Julian Jones:year. And
Julian Jones:you're looking at it, I'm like, this is so huge.
Julian Jones:This is so fun. It doesn't make sense.
Julian Jones:And he got on stage like, it doesn't make
Julian Jones:sense to me either, man. This is a ball.
Julian Jones:Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know.
Julian Jones:Yeah, man. And he was
Julian Jones:like a genuine everyman.
Julian Jones:And I think there's something about it
Julian Jones:that has to do with alignment.
Julian Jones:When you talk about truth and you talk about vibration,
Julian Jones:when somebody is aligned,
Julian Jones:the sound, the energy, the aesthetic,
Julian Jones:all just kind of marries itself.
Julian Jones:And this, you said, attitude of humility.
Julian Jones:This is who I am.
Julian Jones:And now I'm going to blow all of your minds
Julian Jones:in a form of service to you guys.
Julian Jones:Make sure we all have an excellent job.
Julian Jones:And something about being able to do that well
Julian Jones:is like, oh, we're in the presence of something special.
Danny Beissel:Well, it's like you're telling them you're not alone.
Danny Beissel:You know, it could be as simple as that.
Danny Beissel:When you're making someone feel like, oh my God, he gets me.
Danny Beissel:You know, whatever that is.
Danny Beissel:Once you unlock that through, like a good writer will do that lyrically
Danny Beissel:or, you know, I mean, God, talk and bring up Radiohead again.
Danny Beissel:I mean, I can't wrap my head around some of their melodies
Danny Beissel:are just out of this world.
Danny Beissel:And I think,
Danny Beissel:see, I'm a melody guy.
Danny Beissel:Like the last thing I get is the lyric.
Danny Beissel:You know, some people hear the lyrics immediately.
Danny Beissel:To me, the melody hits me
Danny Beissel:and I'm like, oh.
Danny Beissel:And then eventually I figure out what he's saying
Danny Beissel:or she's saying, whatever it is.
Danny Beissel:And, you know, everybody's different.
Julian Jones:Here's the thing, man.
Julian Jones:Do you even have an Achilles heel?
Julian Jones:You know, like I've seen you do like
Julian Jones:half a dozen things
Julian Jones:at the highest level you can do them.
Julian Jones:Is there something that you just wish
Danny Beissel:better or feel you'd like to refine yeah you know i could be a better player i i'd say for me
Danny Beissel:yeah i think i could dig into the guitar a little more get the piano know the piano a little more i
Danny Beissel:mean i've been i've been pretty strict on my vocals like you know taking care of them and
Danny Beissel:i'm a i'm a crazy person about my pitch so i'm like i'm so focused on that before shows because
Danny Beissel:i sing with different bands so it's kind of like if i'm singing with american vinyl it's like
Danny Beissel:I have to approach that differently
Danny Beissel:because I'm singing the highest
Danny Beissel:of my octaves
Danny Beissel:doing the Boston and all that stuff.
Danny Beissel:So it's like,
Danny Beissel:I'm always concentrating on my voice.
Danny Beissel:So I'd like to, you know,
Danny Beissel:dig in to be a, you know,
Danny Beissel:better musician to speak.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, the harmony work on
Julian Jones:Featherborn versus Foster Child
Julian Jones:was like a very welcome difference.
Julian Jones:You know?
Danny Beissel:Yeah, that was Charlie, man.
Julian Jones:Yeah, yeah.
Danny Beissel:He's, I did some harmonies,
Danny Beissel:but like,
Danny Beissel:You know, I got to really give it to those guys what they did to those songs.
Danny Beissel:Like it was, you know, you know, you basically had like trains, rhythm section, having Scott and Charlie and just because, you know, it's not that I've been in a, I only did really Foster Child before that, before Featherborn.
Danny Beissel:And I think I did, I did the, yeah, so I basically just did Foster Child.
Danny Beissel:I was only in the studio for that.
Danny Beissel:maybe when we did Calling All Angels with Carly Simon,
Danny Beissel:that was the other thing, but that was only one song.
Danny Beissel:And then when I did Featherborn, it was such an educational...
Danny Beissel:I left that recording a different songwriter, a different player.
Danny Beissel:It really opened me up.
Danny Beissel:Because I'm always like a sponge in those situations.
Danny Beissel:I know I don't know.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:I'm always willing.
Danny Beissel:I just want to learn and learn and learn and learn.
Danny Beissel:That was just being at Blackbird with John McBride, engineering, and Scott and Charlie,
Danny Beissel:and the musicians that we use, man.
Danny Beissel:It was such a mind-blowing experience.
Julian Jones:Really special experience.
Julian Jones:It is cool, man.
Julian Jones:In terms of having a four-circle moment, when you're a kid, you always dream about doing
Julian Jones:the music thing, and you have this short list of things you always dreamed about, and then
Julian Jones:you start doing it, and you're like, oh, that was on that list of things I dreamed about
Julian Jones:when I was a kid.
Julian Jones:I actually got to do it.
Julian Jones:Do you have anything like that?
Julian Jones:Something you always dreamed about?
Julian Jones:And you're like, oh my God, I actually just had to do that.
Julian Jones:I experienced it.
Danny Beissel:I'll tell you what, man.
Danny Beissel:And I say this all the time.
Danny Beissel:And it's like, I remember the first daydream that ever came true for me.
Danny Beissel:And I was on a bus in Philly coming from Arnold Ockarty and Alany.
Danny Beissel:I was on the K bus, I think it was called, SEPTA.
Danny Beissel:And I remember daydreaming.
Danny Beissel:And this is the first time because I wasn't really,
Danny Beissel:I didn't know what I wanted to do until like,
Danny Beissel:But I remember daydreaming, being on a stage or something and singing.
Danny Beissel:And I remember the first time it happened, I'm like, oh my God, is that a dream come true?
Danny Beissel:You know, like a daydream.
Danny Beissel:So then I looked at it like, you know, that's a very special moment.
Danny Beissel:So yes, I daydream all the time.
Danny Beissel:I do it now, right?
Danny Beissel:Because it's kind of like I have a super objective and all these other objectives to get there.
Danny Beissel:So like right now, I'll picture like I try to manifest things and I'll just, I do it all the time.
Danny Beissel:I'm still like a little kid, like, oh my God, daydream doing that, whatever that is.
Danny Beissel:And I believe as soon as we daydream it, we could go towards it.
Danny Beissel:Because as soon as I made one come real, I mean, do that equation.
Danny Beissel:If I can make a simple daydream real that I did as a kid on a bus, I daydreamed something
Danny Beissel:that actually happened.
Danny Beissel:I was like, oh, that's cool.
Danny Beissel:How far can I take this?
Danny Beissel:So yeah, I'm still
Danny Beissel:kid, you know, I don't think
Danny Beissel:as an artist we should ever lose that kid-like
Julian Jones:mentality. That like child-like
Danny Beissel:wonder. Yeah, imagination
Danny Beissel:is the most powerful thing. Absolutely, man.
Danny Beissel:Absolutely. A musician, an actor,
Danny Beissel:any, any, anybody.
Danny Beissel:You know, any human
Danny Beissel:can get out. Like a carpenter has to imagine
Danny Beissel:a house, you know, and once he
Danny Beissel:builds that, it's got to be just the feeling of
Danny Beissel:me writing a song. Right.
Julian Jones:It almost like validates your
Julian Jones:belief, right? I always thought it was like the cheesiest thing
Julian Jones:people like believe in yourself.
Julian Jones:I was like, well, don't believe in yourself.
Julian Jones:Go out there and, you know, establish proof
Julian Jones:and do the steps and do the thing.
Julian Jones:But I was like, that's so corny.
Julian Jones:And then I'm like, now as I'm older,
Julian Jones:it kind of almost takes on like a new form.
Julian Jones:It's like, no, it's believe in yourself.
Julian Jones:It's like, use the proof to learn how to trust your gut
Julian Jones:and your instincts and your taste,
Julian Jones:like we were talking about before,
Julian Jones:because your instincts are usually right.
Julian Jones:And that's what I meant by believe in yourself.
Julian Jones:Like when I say something broad, like believe in yourself,
Julian Jones:What does that, how do you personalize that in your world?
Danny Beissel:I didn't believe myself a long time.
Danny Beissel:No, I mean, that's a whole nother thing, but it's like to personalize that is, is, is trust your instinct.
Danny Beissel:You said it, you nailed it.
Danny Beissel:They're your instincts.
Danny Beissel:You know, I always say, if your intuition says, don't walk across the street, don't walk across the street.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:I mean, the thing that got me through life to this point where I'm at is my instincts because I trusted them.
Danny Beissel:And I think that's all we have at the end of the day.
Danny Beissel:And, you know, your instincts are everything, but we have to, they're just not like, you know, it all comes to living your truth and trying to be as honest that that sharpens your instincts, sharpens them up.
Danny Beissel:Because we went on a dolem, you know, if I'm out five day binge, my instincts ain't really sharp or probably not even really my instincts at that point.
Danny Beissel:So it's kind of like, I love that you said that because that's such an important thing.
Danny Beissel:The only thing we have is what we are and our instincts.
Danny Beissel:And sometimes they might be wrong, but at least we followed our instinct.
Danny Beissel:By the end of the day, I could be like, well, I instinctively thought that and I followed it.
Danny Beissel:And I could sleep at night if I did that.
Danny Beissel:Sit in this guessing game, like, which, they pull this lever.
Julian Jones:Exactly.
Julian Jones:I think it's the courage to move forward without certainty.
Julian Jones:I mean, it aren't,
Julian Jones:certainty is a luxury, man.
Julian Jones:You go up on a show, I don't know how it's going to happen.
Julian Jones:I've been doing all the stuff we can do.
Julian Jones:We don't know how this crowd is going to go, this menu, this album,
Julian Jones:this song. We think it's great, but
Julian Jones:you really don't know. And I think that
Julian Jones:believing in yourself is like,
Julian Jones:all right, we're going to figure it out. We have about 55%
Julian Jones:of the data. We'd like to have 100.
Julian Jones:We're going to move forward.
Danny Beissel:Well, dude, it's like, I'll wake up
Danny Beissel:and I wake up and I'm like, okay,
Danny Beissel:today's an improvisation. What's my
Danny Beissel:objective? You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:And it's like, now I have my, and everything else is just life.
Danny Beissel:And you just got to react to it.
Danny Beissel:So it's like, you got to keep it sharp.
Danny Beissel:And go back to that statement I said about better grip with a loose hand, too.
Danny Beissel:It's like, don't, you know, some people can get so in their heads.
Danny Beissel:It's like, you've really got to give it, like, the magic is to give it, give some over, you know,
Danny Beissel:just almost say, give it over to God or give it over to the universe, whatever floats your boat.
Danny Beissel:But you can't, as humans, man, as soon as we get like this, it's wrong.
Danny Beissel:It's not going to be right if we're tensed up in a low vibration.
Danny Beissel:You know, it's like, and I found, you know, I'm saying that because I'm living it.
Danny Beissel:You know, lucky enough, I'm able to live out here in Laguna Beach, California.
Danny Beissel:And living that way is like, it's such a peaceful, I have such a peace because of that.
Danny Beissel:I'm not, you know, look, man, I'm a work in progress.
Danny Beissel:I'm still going, you know, I'm still a little kid trying to make it, you know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:In a sense, you know, like, but what is life?
Danny Beissel:But just, you know, sometimes I got to remind myself that the journey is it.
Danny Beissel:Don't get so like, because then all of a sudden, like all this life, like two weeks went by
Danny Beissel:and you're like this opposed to like, yeah, whatever, you know, I'm going that direction.
Danny Beissel:I'm doing my best.
Danny Beissel:I'm doing, you know, somehow I'm still out here and I guess I'm supposed to be out here.
Danny Beissel:Ain't that a nicer way to just.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:it could all end tomorrow, man.
Danny Beissel:I don't know.
Danny Beissel:So it's kind of like,
Danny Beissel:yeah, don't take yourself too seriously.
Danny Beissel:Like you said,
Danny Beissel:and I think that's a brilliant thing you said.
Danny Beissel:Yeah, man.
Julian Jones:Well, what's the,
Julian Jones:what's the next question is a two-parter.
Julian Jones:Practically speaking, right?
Julian Jones:Your best and worst at it.
Julian Jones:What's something you do
Julian Jones:that helps you stay aligned,
Julian Jones:focused, centered,
Julian Jones:and then something that you have that's like,
Julian Jones:oh man, I wish I could kick this havoc, man,
Julian Jones:but I just can't.
Danny Beissel:It's such a guilty pleasure.
Danny Beissel:I like it.
Danny Beissel:I have so many of those.
Danny Beissel:No, not that many.
Danny Beissel:The good thing that really centers me and helps me in everyday life is I wake up and meditate.
Danny Beissel:So that's been a literal game changer.
Danny Beissel:That's for me, though.
Danny Beissel:I can only speak to myself.
Danny Beissel:That's a great habit that I've been doing.
Danny Beissel:I do that.
Danny Beissel:I have a bunch of habits throughout the day that I do, but that's my number one.
Danny Beissel:Because I wake up with a racy head, man.
Danny Beissel:Oh my God, I'm late.
Danny Beissel:For what?
Danny Beissel:I'm not late for anything.
Danny Beissel:You know what I mean?
Danny Beissel:But it's just that head I wake up with.
Danny Beissel:So I meditate a lot.
Danny Beissel:A bad habit that I still have that I'm trying to fix is procrastination.
Danny Beissel:I procrastinate a lot.
Danny Beissel:You and me, brother.
Danny Beissel:You and me, brother.
Danny Beissel:It's like, you know, I push things off.
Danny Beissel:I'm not as bad as I used to be.
Danny Beissel:I'm cleaning that up a little bit.
Danny Beissel:but it's, like,
Danny Beissel:it's such a stupid thing to do.
Danny Beissel:It's, like,
Danny Beissel:you know,
Danny Beissel:and when I don't do it,
Danny Beissel:like,
Danny Beissel:when I get up
Danny Beissel:and I text something
Danny Beissel:and it's gone,
Danny Beissel:it's, like,
Danny Beissel:oh, my God.
Danny Beissel:It's, like,
Danny Beissel:the universe is right,
Danny Beissel:you know,
Danny Beissel:and it's such a simple thing.
Danny Beissel:But listen, man,
Danny Beissel:that's,
Danny Beissel:you know,
Danny Beissel:we all lived a lot of life
Danny Beissel:and, you know,
Danny Beissel:there's things.
Danny Beissel:It's, like,
Danny Beissel:I don't get frustrated
Danny Beissel:when I don't do it
Danny Beissel:because
Danny Beissel:I'm just, like,
Danny Beissel:because at least I caught it.
Danny Beissel:Like,
Danny Beissel:hey, man,
Danny Beissel:I did that again.
Danny Beissel:So again, I'll tell you what, the statement of being a work in progress has been the best thing I say to myself.
Danny Beissel:Like, relax, Annie, you're a work in progress.
Danny Beissel:Are you going that way or are you going that way?
Danny Beissel:So I always try to keep going that way.
Danny Beissel:So I guess to answer your question, man, it would be like just the meditation that just quiets my mind.
Danny Beissel:Just for like 20 minutes in the morning, man.
Danny Beissel:And then it's just a calmer day for me.
Danny Beissel:And that's a good version of me when I'm at, you know, not that I have walking around anxiety ridden.
Danny Beissel:I don't have that, but I have a head that thinks a lot.
Danny Beissel:I guess we all do.
Danny Beissel:Nice.
Danny Beissel:And yeah, procrastination, dude, it's been around day one for me, but I cleaned it up
Danny Beissel:a bit.
Danny Beissel:But that's a thing that I'm trying to, I've been chipping away at and it's been a lot
Danny Beissel:better.
Julian Jones:Well, there's something you said a couple of times and I haven't addressed it yet.
Julian Jones:You always talk about, I'm a work in progress and I'm getting there.
Julian Jones:Did it take you a while to be able to extend yourself to that grace or have you always had
Julian Jones:healthy relationship with shame and vulnerability and being able to be like,
Julian Jones:oh, I made a mistake. I'm not going to sit and dwell. Or did you
Julian Jones:learn to do that later in life? You can extend yourself in grace and be like, look,
Julian Jones:I'm not going to get it all right, but I'm working with it. Well, for me,
Danny Beissel:and I don't mind saying this, I'm an alcoholic.
Danny Beissel:Before I got sober, I wasn't
Danny Beissel:thinking the best about myself and all
Danny Beissel:that stuff so it's a little different for me to answer that so like the last four years have been
Danny Beissel:you know fixing that part of myself getting it was a good run but you know I had to put the drink
Danny Beissel:down and um that cleaned a lot up for me so that's like but thank you when I was when I was out there
Danny Beissel:on the party and stuff like that I just wasn't thinking right and um I I wasn't aware I was a
Danny Beissel:work in progress but i wasn't working towards the light side of things you know so yeah you know i
Danny Beissel:was just i was kind of lost in a lot of those years as we are and i give i give credit to a lot of
Danny Beissel:people in my life like the you know brian brian was a big part of my life they gave me a direction
Danny Beissel:in a positive way shout out brian lee changed my life yeah brian lee brian quinn you know like
Danny Beissel:like quinn he just you know like i was just like this so i got lucky to when i attached to someone
Danny Beissel:that like was a driving force in a good direction i got lucky with that you know with them you know
Danny Beissel:musically and everything else but yeah you know had to clean all that up which i did and and right
Danny Beissel:now like i feel it's kind of funny it's like i you know feel like it's a whole new life for me but
Danny Beissel:you know so a work in progress meaning like you know the things that you know how do we learn by
Danny Beissel:you know for me i did the things the wrong way enough that i learned that they were wrong
Danny Beissel:So like right now, a work in progress, meaning like trying to be the best version of myself,
Danny Beissel:try not to procrastinate, try to show up, try to be, you know, man of my word and all
Danny Beissel:that good stuff.
Danny Beissel:And that's all we can really do.
Danny Beissel:It's all I can really do as a person.
Danny Beissel:And the journey has been absolutely amazing.
Danny Beissel:And it's been filled with ups and downs, but that's life.
Julian Jones:Yeah, absolutely, man.
Danny Beissel:Well, speaking about it now, what are something you're proud of that has nothing to do with
Danny Beissel:music?
Danny Beissel:Besides music, it's just being, you know, not to sound like a weirdo, but like being, I'm proud of where I'm at and where I'm at in my headspace and being a man of my word and showing up.
Danny Beissel:And, you know, I was a pretty sick guy out there for a long time running around with a drink and, you know, and it's a progressive thing.
Danny Beissel:it was a progressive thing so you know i was letting people down people that were
Danny Beissel:that were trying to help me and and i didn't mean to i was just sick so i guess the main thing i'd
Danny Beissel:be proud of is that um i became a man of my word for anybody who listened to this interview um
Julian Jones:how do we stay plugged in how do we connect with people more importantly how can we support you
Danny Beissel:man and kind of advance the movement number one be the best version of yourself because when you do
Danny Beissel:that it helps everything and we need to put more positive energy into this world of ours the
Danny Beissel:negative is on the rise so but to support me i mean i guess listen to you know if listen listen
Danny Beissel:to featherborn and if you like it keep listening and if you don't that's okay it's not everybody's
Danny Beissel:flavor but like like right now it'd be like you know i'm just trying to get the music out there
Danny Beissel:and it's a hard thing to do in a sense,
Danny Beissel:but I'm not going to let, you know,
Danny Beissel:it's like we talked about earlier, Joel.
Danny Beissel:Like, I'm trying to navigate through this new way
Danny Beissel:of the digital era.
Danny Beissel:Like, I landed on, you know,
Danny Beissel:I'm going to try to license some music.
Danny Beissel:And so, you know, just, you know,
Danny Beissel:I guess listen to my music.
Danny Beissel:And if it affects you,
Danny Beissel:maybe I don't know how you would let me know about it,
Danny Beissel:but I love hearing about that stuff.
Danny Beissel:And I love when someone tells me something.
Danny Beissel:Because it means something to me.
Danny Beissel:I mean, you would feel the same way if someone comes up to you about one of your songs.
Danny Beissel:It's like, wow.
Danny Beissel:For sure.
Danny Beissel:100%.
Danny Beissel:It's a great feeling.
Danny Beissel:So we're all just trying to put a little bit of good vibrations out there in the atmosphere.
Danny Beissel:So yeah, check me out.
Danny Beissel:I'm on streaming platforms.
Danny Beissel:Stay tuned for some new music coming out.
Danny Beissel:possible movie.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:Yeah.
Danny Beissel:I might be doing some,
Danny Beissel:get back.
Danny Beissel:I was like,
Danny Beissel:I started before I was a musician.
Danny Beissel:I started acting in Philly under this guy,
Danny Beissel:Sydney K,
Danny Beissel:which was like,
Danny Beissel:became more of a mentor in life than actually,
Danny Beissel:you know,
Danny Beissel:I did a couple independent films and stuff like that,
Danny Beissel:but I had this thing that came up now.
Danny Beissel:I was trying to work some music in a movie and I may have some good news
Danny Beissel:coming out soon.
Danny Beissel:So stay tuned.
Danny Beissel:But yeah,
Danny Beissel:just check me out on Instagram.
Danny Beissel:let me know who you are and I'd love to
Danny Beissel:find out who you are.
Danny Beissel:That's sweet, man. Well, dude, I thank you from the bottom of my heart
Julian Jones:just for making time, man. I think your journey
Julian Jones:is there. Thank you, man. Thank you for
Julian Jones:thinking. Yeah, dude, you have
Julian Jones:so much more that's going to come out. I have nothing
Julian Jones:but the highest hopes for you and the highest standards
Julian Jones:because everything you do is
Julian Jones:fantastic. So I love you, brother.
Julian Jones:Thank you so much, man. Dude, I love you too
Danny Beissel:and I'm very grateful that you reached out
Danny Beissel:and asked me to do this, man. I'm a big fan
Danny Beissel:of you as your music
Danny Beissel:as a person.
Danny Beissel:And you're just like,
Danny Beissel:you know,
Danny Beissel:you're a great family man.
Danny Beissel:And I do.
Danny Beissel:I love you, brother.
Danny Beissel:And I appreciate you reaching out, man.
Julian Jones:The rest of you,
Julian Jones:thank you so much for checking out
Julian Jones:Danny Baisel and I.
Julian Jones:I'll make sure you check out
Julian Jones:that Featherborn album.
Julian Jones:Take very good care of yourself.
Julian Jones:And if you like what you've heard here today,
Julian Jones:please tell somebody who loves music.
Julian Jones:Thank you.
