We Dare You to Make It Through This Weekend's New Horror Movie

RSS Feed The sixth film in the notoriously dark and gory franchise is the most intense, grisly and gory one yet. We weren’t sure the movie could live up to all the hype, but it certainly did, and even surpassed our expectations. However, speaking of expectations, the film has not lived up to what producers were hoping, falling far short in its opening weekend. Perhaps, it’s just too scary, too violent and too much for most movie-goers… don’t judge us for highly recommending this flick to people with iron stomachs.

And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and DJ. An episode we did not plan to record, but we have reacted so strongly Robes, and it's rare that we react this type of way to a horror movie. Speaker 2: It was a little flip where my heart went into like a like a tech of CARDI like a it was thumping, and I actually started to freak out a little bit because I haven't felt that in more than a decade since my heart surgery. And it was just a brief, like twenty second thing. But I swear this movie brought it off.

Speaker 1: Okay, And apologies to the cast, the crew, to the director of Sebastian Vanischek, because that is not a ringing endorsement. No, people are no, no, no, hey, go see this movie. You might you might have heart trouble. Okay for some, that might be thrilling.

Speaker 1: We'll just take a beat. But that does make the point. Robes. Anybody that's followed us even a little bit anywhere in our careers knows we are ginormous horror movie fans. We deep dive it. We're not just the Halloween, We're not just the big Ones. No, no, no, we deep dive it on horror movies. We love all kinds, and we were excited this is a big one. But so it takes a lot to make our stomachs turn yes and get uncomfortable in such a way that we would we would only recommend this to certain people.

Speaker 2: Yes, because actually one of my first takeaways was that was an unbelievable movie like I've never seen before yet. It was so violent, it was so sadistic, it was so gory. I said to you, will people judge us and think we have like some deviant I don't know space in our brains, because who could like a movie like that?

Speaker 2: I enjoyed the thrill and intensity of the movie, while at the same time I know it sounds weird, but I enjoyed that that feeling of dread and fear and disgusted all those things in a safe space. I appreciate a movie who can make me feel something in a safe environment that I would never.

Speaker 1: It always makes sense to me that there's a limit to your Your fear will only go so far right right, And this is I was trying to give you some thought. Robes. This movie is relentless. There's a point in every horror movie Robes that it becomes daytime. Something happens to where I don't know, maybe a pastor comes in. Something happens to where you know, you can get a little break to go. Nothing's gonna jump out, there's nothing to be as frayed up for a moment. This Robes. That dinner scene I'm talking about was that half thirty minutes in. Maybe maybe I'm saying I'm feeling the last hour and a half you are under assault.

Speaker 2: Way initially, maybe after watching Friday the Thirteenth for the first time when I was in second grade. All those fears were basically reignited and then taken to a whole new level at the beginning of this evil Dead, awesome open It was they, you know what they have nailed the last three I believe they have nailed the opening scene, and you know that it's more is coming until they actually put up the evil Dead for the time. Have they gotten to the title yet? No, was the answer, So we knew more was coming. And then yet there was a brief respite of plot storytelling, but.

Speaker 1: But not much that was that was early. Once you got past the funeral, right what broke? They unleash on the audience and you never get a break. You can never exhale and go Okay, nothing's coming. Every moment you knew something could be coming, another thrill could be coming a scare, and the tension roll they build up in some moments. Whoever an Oscar I am? I am pushing for an oscar for whoever did the sound editing on this.

Speaker 3: Day movie goodness and some of the visuals.

Speaker 2: The way the camera was positioned with certain scenes where all hell is literally breaking loose and you're just trained on the final girl and the camera's pulling back but all this violence is happening around her, next to her, above her, and it's just it was so cool the way they shot those scenes. So it's, yes, the gore is there, but the storytelling's there, but just the way they try to take it to another level they succeeded. I saw things I've never seen before. I've seen gore I never knew I needed to see before and probably never need to see again. But still it the ability for them to be able to shock us the way they did, I have to just absolutely give a slow clap of appreciation on that.

Speaker 1: But see how we're talking about it, Robes. There was art and beauty in this cinematography. There was all kinds of art and beauty in the sound and how they put this thing together. It was cool to see. We see a bunch of horror movies. We saw some stuff that jumped out of us, and I want to see what else this director does because of it. This movie, if you're not familiar, this is a six movie horror franchise. It started in the early eighties. Robed is kind of the little movie they could and it has a cult following. It is not like the big Halloween franchises. It didn't make all that money, not the Friday thirteenth, it's not the conjuring, not that, but it has, when you say, Robes, a cult following. In the past two in the franchise have made what fifty seven and sixty plus million at the box office, So they're going to keep making it.

Speaker 2: Yes, and look, the first couple are campy as hell. Camp Yes, camp like to the point where you're laughing while you're watching. And I will say, I love how they have continued to give a nod to those original campy flips with some moments like that. In between we said there was no relief, There really wasn't any relief from the action, but there were moments within the dread the horror of the Gore where there were some hilarious, deliberate comedic relief moments. They didn't last long, but god you needed them. Supplied to us by a grandma who is a part of this family that's now under assault. And then just some of the they had some hilariously timed construction noises, so they gave they gave us some moments of comedic relief, which goes back to the very early beginnings in this franchise.

Speaker 1: They were few and far between and had them. I didn't trust them, and they're just trying to give me the smile for a second. Then they're gonna scare the hell out of me. This movie is relentless in the action. This for me, gore is went and so there was some gore in there. It didn't go overboard to the gore. I'm I don't know why that didn't stand out. We stood out to me ropes. There was extreme violence. Yeah, there was a lot of beating up and constant throwing bodies around, and that was violent like a lot.

Speaker 1: Yeah, that girl went through it, and even if she was allowed, she would have led out by the time somebody found it because she suffered one last wound. But yeah, final it was not survivable. Good point, so all this were talking about it actually wrote is doing for a horror movie, certainly one of this level of violence and gore to be getting the critics scores is getting on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience score that says.

Speaker 2: It does so Rotten Tomatoes right now, seventy one percent from the critics, that's huge, eighty two percent from the audience score. Look, if I would, if I were to rate this, I would have absolutely given it in the nineties, like a ninety maybe even a ninety two, ninety three percent, because I thought it was that good. I thought the acting was amazing, I thought the script was great. And look, if you can get me to I would say, it's fair to say you can correct me if I'm wrong. I spend at least thirty percent of the movie with my hands over my face. Obviously I peeked out with my eyes, but I just felt safer watching it that way.

Speaker 1: The point of an I'm not you look, if I gotta sit through this, we do this together, baby, come on, we threw this together. And I never did that thing there were moments wrote I was so in awe of what they were doing. I was smiling, like, I'm just this is unbelievable that this is happening. That opening sequence, I wanted to stand up and cheer at one moment that you know I'm talking about, like wow, And it was the simplest, least gory scary moment maybe of the movie.

Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, when we finally see and they brought the woman back from the most recent evil dead rise, So the demon who has possessed this particular body, she shows back up and honestly, it is the creepiest, like you feel like your entire skin like tingling from head to toe. I would describe this as we love roller coasters, I think obviously, I think a lot of people who like horror movies probably like roller coasters. It's the thrill seekers in all of us. But I would liken this to being on space Mountain and you're just constantly going upside down and then you're getting turned. You don't know what's coming, but you know it's gonna be bad, or it's gonna be it's gonna be thrilling. I guess maybe, but that's how I felt didn't know what was coming, but I knew what was coming was going to be terrifying.

Speaker 1: There's an oscar for you. All are familiar. The whole franchise goes around, what is the Book of the dead. You read from Demon's come Back and start wreaking hell. That is the most simplified way to put it, but that's the basis of the franchise. Every movie, essentially, some one stupidly reads from this book of the dead that they find in a basement, and all hell breaks loose. People turn into demons, and these demons recall kinds of gory hell. Now, this particular movie robes this is we want to let you know at least how they describe. This is the synopsis of Evil Dead Burn, which is the sixth in the franchise.

There are some movie that just you know, the Killer will jump out and scary. They're jump scares, and that's one thing. Even Poltergeist roes that creeps you out a little bit. It's nothing on the level of this type of thing. What I don't really know, Babe. We have been looking forward to it and we're gonna run out and see this movie, and sure enough we did.

Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, you have to be in the right mood, you have to be in the right mindset. Obviously you have to be okay with Gore. But I do think I couldn't watch this kind of movie often, so if I can keep it to like maybe once or twice a year, there's a moment where you're like, Okay, I'm ready for it. I know what I'm getting. And it's just this idea of taking things to another level and just being in awe of their ability to do so.

But there are two moments, and I know the ones you're talking about that thought went long and that I thought, okay this one now you're just trying to stick me out. Yeah, it was. Speaker 1: It is it. That was a man that was tough. I can't believe I was missing Keita and zach and in this piece. But here's the critic consensus on this, at least on right Tomato, saying that Sebastian Vanachek spills guts with glory and the latest installment of Evil Dead featuring the meanest, nastiest and ickiest chapter that is sure to leave fans with a wicked, satisfying burn for more. Damn. That's what the crew is.

Speaker 1: And the director here is a young cat, Sebastian Vanichek, but he's really not a big name necessarily only has one other feature film to his name. This is his second one. It's not we should tell you doing great at the box office right now. It's coming in pretty well below expectations, going to have a weekend opening around fourteen million dollars. Didn't have a big budget, but still that was hoping to do better than that. But stay here. When we come back, we're going to reel off some of the headlines. There have been reviews that are coming in which are hilarious. Also some critics, we'll give you some of their best lines that we have seen about this movie that we love and I actually think some people might hate there. All right, we continue here on this unexpected episode Fami and DJ. We have had such a reaction to a horror movie, not just that we love it. It was just an experience evil dead burn Robes was an experience for me in the movie theater of I don't know how exhausted you could have been and tired after a long week and going into the movie theater. I don't know how you could fall asleep in the theater no and not be anything but on edge. It did feel like Robes a roller coaster that you get on the ride. It starts in the first twenty thirty minutes of that first tic tick where you're going up to the top, and then then you're just dropping for the next hour and half.

Speaker 2: And that goes on throughout, even past the credits. By the way, so you do go see this movie a heads up to you stick around past the credits. There is a wonderful scene that is worth waiting for. So just it's what I love when movies do this, and you always say, hey, the big clue is obviously if they don't turn up the house lights, there's almost certainly more to come. And that is absolutely the case in this movie, So don't miss that because one of the stars of the show makes a return. It's quite fun. But I will say to what you were talking about, the NonStop like, I actually felt like I went to a like a class, like a workout class, because my muscles were tense the entire time.

But if you like horror movies, if you like to be pushed beyond your comfort zone, this is the movie for you if you like it to be you know, think about the conjuring. It's scary, it's awesome, but no one actually dies like people have died before to allow for the story, the ghost story to be told. But if you think about it, no one is actually other than someone explaining a ghost's death. Previously, you don't have the gore and the death. This one is the opposite.

And I do think that there should be a disclaimer, so to speak, because yes, and please know, we are not suggesting if you don't like gory movies, if you don't like Texas Chainsaw Massacre like that, kind of film. Do not go see this movie under something circumstances. Next One says Evil Dead fans might have mixed reactions to this lean and very mean spirited addition to this franchise. The gory kills, creepy tone, and striking cinematography are standouts. However, the movie falls back on typical horror cliches towards the end, which, honestly, I don't mind.

Have they gotten to the title yet? No, was the answer, So we knew more was coming. And then yet there was a brief respite of plot storytelling, but.

You can never exhale and go Okay, nothing's coming. Every moment you knew something could be coming, another thrill could be coming a scare, and the tension roll they build up in some moments. Speaker 2: The way the camera was positioned with certain scenes where all hell is literally breaking loose and you're just trained on the final girl and the camera's pulling back but all this violence is happening around her, next to her, above her, and it's just it was so cool the way they shot those scenes. So it's, yes, the gore is there, but the storytelling's there, but just the way they try to take it to another level they succeeded. I saw things I've never seen before. I've seen gore I never knew I needed to see before and probably never need to see again. But still it the ability for them to be able to shock us the way they did, I have to just absolutely give a slow clap of appreciation on that.

It was cool to see. We see a bunch of horror movies. We saw some stuff that jumped out of us, and I want to see what else this director does because of it. This movie, if you're not familiar, this is a six movie horror franchise. It started in the early eighties. Robed is kind of the little movie they could and it has a cult following. It is not like the big Halloween franchises. It didn't make all that money, not the Friday thirteenth, it's not the conjuring, not that, but it has, when you say, Robes, a cult following. In the past two in the franchise have made what fifty seven and sixty plus million at the box office, So they're going to keep making it.

Speaker 2: Yes, and look, the first couple are campy as hell. Camp Yes, camp like to the point where you're laughing while you're watching. And I will say, I love how they have continued to give a nod to those original campy flips with some moments like that. In between we said there was no relief, There really wasn't any relief from the action, but there were moments within the dread the horror of the Gore where there were some hilarious, deliberate comedic relief moments. They didn't last long, but god you needed them. Supplied to us by a grandma who is a part of this family that's now under assault. And then just some of the they had some hilariously timed construction noises, so they gave they gave us some moments of comedic relief, which goes back to the very early beginnings in this franchise.

I thought the acting was amazing, I thought the script was great. And look, if you can get me to I would say, it's fair to say you can correct me if I'm wrong. I spend at least thirty percent of the movie with my hands over my face. Obviously I peeked out with my eyes, but I just felt safer watching it that way.

I would describe this as we love roller coasters, I think obviously, I think a lot of people who like horror movies probably like roller coasters. It's the thrill seekers in all of us. But I would liken this to being on space Mountain and you're just constantly going upside down and then you're getting turned. You don't know what's coming, but you know it's gonna be bad, or it's gonna be it's gonna be thrilling. I guess maybe, but that's how I felt didn't know what was coming, but I knew what was coming was going to be terrifying.

Every movie, essentially, some one stupidly reads from this book of the dead that they find in a basement, and all hell breaks loose. People turn into demons, and these demons recall kinds of gory hell. Now, this particular movie robes this is we want to let you know at least how they describe. This is the synopsis of Evil Dead Burn, which is the sixth in the franchise.

Didn't have a big budget, but still that was hoping to do better than that. But stay here. When we come back, we're going to reel off some of the headlines. There have been reviews that are coming in which are hilarious. Also some critics, we'll give you some of their best lines that we have seen about this movie that we love and I actually think some people might hate there. All right, we continue here on this unexpected episode Fami and DJ. We have had such a reaction to a horror movie, not just that we love it. It was just an experience evil dead burn Robes was an experience for me in the movie theater of I don't know how exhausted you could have been and tired after a long week and going into the movie theater. I don't know how you could fall asleep in the theater no and not be anything but on edge. It did feel like Robes a roller coaster that you get on the ride. It starts in the first twenty thirty minutes of that first tic tick where you're going up to the top, and then then you're just dropping for the next hour and half.

There is a wonderful scene that is worth waiting for. And that is absolutely the case in this movie, So don't miss that because one of the stars of the show makes a return. It's quite fun.
