Vacationing California Couple Tries To Save Man As He’s Attacked By A Crocodile

Vacationing California Couple Tries To Save Man As He’s Attacked By A Crocodile

A California couple vacationing in Puerto Vallarta leapt into action after hearing a man screaming in the ocean in front of their resort. The tourists jumped into a kayak to try and save the 28-year-old who was being attacked by a crocodile, but the creature eventually pulled him underwater. The man’s body wasn’t found until the following morning, but in meantime, the couple says they were shocked to see the beach remain open and families swimming in the same waters where the attack happened hours earlier.

Speaker 1: Hey, there're folks.

00:00:02
Speaker 2: It is Monday, June twenty ninth, and a crocodile attack on a very popular Mexican resort town where a lot of Americans like to spend vacation. And now we're hearing about a twenty eight year old man being killed and what's being described as a horrific scene on this speech. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ.

00:00:27
Speaker 1: Rowlds.

00:00:27
Speaker 2: We've got a lot to worry about on vacation that people be concerned about.

00:00:30
Speaker 1: And frankly, when you go to Mexico, there.

00:00:32
Speaker 2: Are certain warnings that you are get, you do get about violence and whatnot.

00:00:37
Speaker 1: This ain't one I'm used to hearing.

00:00:38
Speaker 3: No, and we have been to this speech multiple times. I have swum in the ocean. I'm not sure that you. You're not a big ocean guy, so worry about sharks. But yes, that's my concern. I'm worried about sharks. And then when we recently left Portoviarta the following week there was cartel violence. So yes, there are always some concerns when you go to certain parts of the world. But never, in my wildest imagination would I have been worried while swimming in the Pacific Ocean or just even wading into the ocean, that a crocodile could attack me. But a California couple, I mean, this is an unbelievable story. And it was a heroic effort by this couple to try and save this man. Unfortunately they got there too late.

00:01:25
Speaker 2: So, folks, this is a place Puerto Areta. Some of you listening might have plans to go there now.

00:01:31
Speaker 1: Now.

00:01:31
Speaker 2: Of course, as you just mentioned Rogues, it did fall off a little bit with tourism after the cartel violence earlier this year.

00:01:37
Speaker 1: But this is.

00:01:38
Speaker 2: An incredibly popular place, and in particular among Americans. A lot of folks have been there along these pristine beaches. You got great you got great food.

00:01:48
Speaker 3: Oh it's your favorite food in the world. This beach a tour we take every time we go.

00:01:53
Speaker 2: It might be my favorite between this and Rome. Seriously, this might be my favorite places to go strictly to eat. So a lot of people are from Plans are being made, people that surely have vacations going there now and already robes. Anybody booking was a little hesitant because of the violence several months ago and now this.

00:02:09
Speaker 3: Yeah, you might feel like a lot. This is a big cruise ship destination too, so a lot of cruise ships will go into port at Port of Iarta, and folks might, maybe even with concern about cartel violence etca, just kind of stay along the beach, stay along the resort area, don't really go anywhere beyond that, and so you feel like you might be safe. But to hear what happened right in front of the Marriotte Port of Iarta resort and SPA, man, I have to tell you this has given me pause about going into the waters, especially in that area.

00:02:40
Speaker 2: So I guess first things first, this is not out off the beaten paths core. They actually do have sanctuaries. They do have places is that people go there to see crocodiles, not on the beach. So this is so they're known to be in Mexico, be around the Gulf area, but not bes in this particular area that we're talking about.

00:03:02
Speaker 1: So we start with Robes. This was six o'clock, six thirty at night.

00:03:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, right around sunset, sure.

00:03:09
Speaker 2: But around that time, that's the time at night. More so, robes is when they tell you not to be out in the water and not to be messing around in areas where their crocodiles. But from what I could tell, it wasn't pitch black out just yet.

00:03:20
Speaker 3: Oh no, this is you know, the time of day around the Caribbean areas, you have daylight probably until like seven seven thirty. So yeah, it was still it was dusk, but that does tend to be feeding time for sharks and apparently for crocodiles as well as well. But Jamie Yetter and her fiance Chris Berry, they were there for her daughter's high school graduation. Isn't this bizarre. We've been telling awful stories about families going on vacations for celebrating graduations. This is just that time of year. And so yes, they were there celebrating her daughter's high school graduation. They're there at the pool area. They said they had just finished an evening walk right along that Bury Beach and they jumped in the pool and they heard a man screaming and they thought he was caught in a riptide. They're like, this guy must be stuck in a riptide. We're both really strong swimmers. They're from southern California, so they jumped out of the pool to go try and help good on them.

00:04:20
Speaker 1: Yeah, really good on them.

00:04:21
Speaker 2: I guess they just reacted in the moment, but yeah, good on them to try to do what they did. And this is where in a lot of ways robes this becomes. You know, he jumped in the water and try to save a guy and they didn't exactly know what he needed to be saved from.

00:04:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, they thought it was a rip current. So he goes in there and he says he actually waded in there to about wasty water. I wonder if he would have done that if he had known there was a crocodile in there. And he tried to throw him a life preserver, but he said he saw him flailing and he was like, what is going on? So he grabs a kayak and tries to go out to get him, but he said they didn't have oars. I mean, can you imagine You're just in a panic and they're looking for anything they can find on the beach to try and help this guy. So they grab a kayak that the resort just had sitting out there, and they couldn't find the oars, so they were scrambling and this is what he said, Oh, this is his exact They spoke to a local news station. Afterwards, the crocodile had him by the thigh and he would turn and the size of this crocodile, I mean, his head was as long as my entire torso his tail was thicker than my legs. And he was just turning him, turning him, taking him under. You see that, you hear about That's what these animals do. They twist and they disorient their prey. And then he said he went down, and then at that point he stayed down. So this California guy in this kayak is over the top. I mean, that's brave as hell of this crocodile with this man. But he said the water was murky, you couldn't even see a foot down, and just describes how traumatizing that was to try and go save this guy and to realize that he could not do anything.

00:06:01
Speaker 2: No, but again it goes to me, I don't know when it hit him that he was out there trying to save a guy and that maybe he himself, the rescuer, was in danger because you run out there, like you said, he's waiting in the water. He put his feet, he put his he got knee deep, he got.

00:06:18
Speaker 3: Who knows how deep, it said he was waist deep.

00:06:20
Speaker 2: To try to help, and then with the kayak. But he's running out there, Rope, trying to save a guy, not realizing initially what the trouble was. And to think, how how do you react differently if you've known this powerful predator is out there doing whatever it's doing to this guy.

00:06:35
Speaker 1: Just and again.

00:06:36
Speaker 2: So at this point you can argue, Rope, this is happening in broad daylight.

00:06:39
Speaker 3: Yeah here, absolutely, absolutely, And look they talked about the couple, and this is one of the reasons why they're speaking out now. They said, yeah, they went back and looked there. There was a sign on the beach and I'm trying to remember if we saw any signs while we were out there. I don't remember seeing any, but you can see it. They've got it up. It has little images of a so they warned about jellyfish, stingrays and crocodiles is on there too. But the couple said, yeah, we saw the signs, but the way the images were just proportionate to one another, it looked like an iguana. So they said they thought they were warning people beachgoers about iguanas.

00:07:18
Speaker 1: I've never seen iguana warning.

00:07:19
Speaker 3: First of all, right, but they thought it was weird. But they just they said, we never it did not look like a crocodile, like we had no idea crocodiles were in that ocean. And they made a big point to say they were so deeply concerned because the next morning, they said, they assumed the beach would be closed, there'd be crime seem taped, there'd be, you know, something to warn folks about, and what had just happened. They said, Nope, the next day beach open, families swimming in the ocean in the exact area where the attack happened. And here's a quote for them. They didn't tell us we shouldn't go swimming. Even the next morning I went down to the ocean. I assumed the beach would be closed. The beach wasn't closed. There were no swimming signs. That seems alarming and disturbing.

00:08:08
Speaker 2: I mean, if we have it in there, But the Marriot is standing by their safety protocols and how they also let the public know whether or not they should or shouldn't swim, and whether or not there's wildlife they need to be concerned about.

00:08:24
Speaker 1: They said, they followed there. They did what they were supposed to do.

00:08:27
Speaker 2: That's a legal statement, sure, because you don't want to get sued later. But they say they did what they're supposed to do. I don't know what the law requires them to do that. Maybe the law needs to be changed about the requirements about the postings and whatnot. But you just don't hear this often, and maybe you won't hear about this again in our lifetimes.

00:08:44
Speaker 1: But it's happened now.

00:08:45
Speaker 3: Well, you know what, this reminds me of a little bit that situation in Disney those many years ago where you just had these two kids, and I remember I had Ava and Anelie's playing in this playground a year or two before this, where a crocodile just came up out of one of those swampy areas and took that little I think he was two years old, right in front of his family and took them a while to find the body. Now, the body of this man was recovered the following morning, and the good news is the crocodile was also captured. But my goodness, did you see that they have video and images of this crocodile when they found it on the beach with its jaw open. Did you see that image?

00:09:28
Speaker 2: It looks like a crocodile. They're all terrifying. There's some things. There are just some things. Ropes you cannot mess on. This is one of the scariest when you hear about the bite force they.

00:09:38
Speaker 1: Talk about with these things. Rose.

00:09:41
Speaker 2: These are monsters, now, the beautiful natural of nature monsters, but they are terrifying in every There's never been a cute movie made about a real crocodile.

00:09:51
Speaker 1: There's not. You can't cute these things up. They are terrifying.

00:09:55
Speaker 3: And powerful and aggressive.

00:09:58
Speaker 2: You can do if you get they say, if it gets its mouth, ohon, you're not getting loose unless it decides to let you loose. That's just the horror of that robes that attack. You think about sharks, I mean, I don't.

00:10:12
Speaker 1: Know what's worse.

00:10:14
Speaker 3: Oh, Mike, I'm telling you right now, and I know this is probably not the correct reaction, but I was already scared of sharks. Now thinking crocodiles are swimming in the ocean, that to me is just a no go for me now, especially in that part of the world. But when we come back, we will tell you the official response from Marriott and remind you I didn't realize this. This is not the first crocodile attack in the ocean. Right outside of Portavarta. Just a few years ago, two Americans nearly escaped. I mean they did escape with their lives, barely escape with their lives in almost the exact same area. Welcome back everyone to this episode of Amy and TJ. I know a lot of people are either on summer vacation, getting ready to go to vacation, maybe still trying to plan that last minute get away. A lot of folks, of course head to the beaches and Porta Iarta one of the best, most beautiful, fun beaches we've ever gone to in the world. Literally one of our favorite places in the world, I think is a fair statement.

00:11:27
Speaker 2: And don't know when we'll get a chance to go back. We were there when violence broke out, and now any consideration or getting past that or feeling better about it now this happens.

00:11:38
Speaker 1: I don't know.

00:11:40
Speaker 2: They are rare, and I know a lot of people go on vacation and I'm not odd like I am and don't like to get in the water along the.

00:11:48
Speaker 1: Beach, but it is priority for a lot of people.

00:11:51
Speaker 3: I get hot, I don't want to go swim in the ocean. I love the way it feels. But if I'm thinking, I don't have to just worry about sharks and jellyfish and sting rays. Now I gotta worry about crops.

00:12:00
Speaker 1: Are Infinity Pool is available?

00:12:02
Speaker 3: Exactly? I'm all about the pool now. No, So this look, and an expert say, this particular area, yes, as you pointed out before the break, is known for crocodiles. They have mangrove areas, habitats that you would expect to find a crocodile in and maybe be on the lookout for. And there are tours to go look at and see and witness these frightening creatures. But they say the urbanization of the area has just this. We hear this story all the time, forced the crocodiles out of their natural habitats. They just don't have enough area to feed and to flourish. So, yes, now crocodiles are in the ocean. And look, this is the exact same site where another crocodile attack occurred. This was in twenty twenty two. It was two tourists from Colorado, two men. One of the men suffered bites to his legs, his arm, his abdomen, his chest, and the only reason why he survived is because his friend jumped into the water to pull him out of the jaws of this crocodile. He also suffered a wound to his hand, so he got but thank god he had somebody right there with him to literally get him away from this crocodile.

00:13:15
Speaker 2: Somebody that cared enough for him to jump into action.

00:13:18
Speaker 3: And was there in time. I mean, this this happens quickly.

00:13:22
Speaker 1: That's that is it.

00:13:24
Speaker 2: Hats off to that brave one who I mean, maybe you don't even think about it, but I if.

00:13:30
Speaker 3: You love someone you just don't think. You jump in and you try to say so. That's why I just think what happened with this California couple. Maybe he didn't know. It seems like he didn't know what he was jumping into. But that is dangerous business going to try and rescue someone.

00:13:44
Speaker 2: I can tell you won't get into the water ever again in Port of Oar.

00:13:47
Speaker 3: I will not.

00:13:48
Speaker 2: I don't know if I'll react like that guy.

00:13:51
Speaker 1: You would, crocodile.

00:13:52
Speaker 3: You would absolutely do it. I know you would. You can say you might not.

00:13:57
Speaker 1: I don't know, man, that's crocodile. We had some good times together.

00:14:03
Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, this is just a absolute nightmare. But let me give you the official statement from the Marriotte and to your point, this is very legal. Yeah. Yes, the safety and security of our guests and associates are our top priority at the Marriotte Porta Iarta. We have appropriate signage as well as night patrolling and red flags to indicate caution in the area and all were and are properly in place. The resource said that it does review its plans and procedures often. It says it works closely with the appropriate authorities on an ongoing basis, and our staff is trained in how to respond to safety matters appropriately. We extend our thoughts to the individual and their loved ones during this difficult time and are providing appropriate support in line with our policies. Look, I see that, I hear that. But what this California couple is describing does not sound like they had folks training or trained folks there ready to respond to something when it happens. And yes, they may just have scheduled patrols and unfortunately the patrol wasn't going on at the time of the attack.

00:15:13
Speaker 1: You said scheduled what night time was?

00:15:15
Speaker 3: Yeah, they said, They said that they have night patrolling and red flags to indicate caution in the area. So it sounds like they're claiming they had a red flag up, and we did see the signs. I've seen them online. But look, okay, they've got the signage up if they had a red flag up, but they certainly weren't stopping people from swimming, and they certainly perhaps weren't aware that this particular animal was so close to shore.

00:15:41
Speaker 2: Well, I assume rooms that many people the next day maybe not even heard about it. Of course didn't know what was going on. Do you want to know that? Sure, you want to know that, But when do you get back to swimming? When do you get back to everything being open and everybody just understanding this was a a.

00:15:59
Speaker 1: Rarity, right, an anomaly in it? All?

00:16:03
Speaker 2: Fine, we know you have to go on at some point, do you have to go on the next day?

00:16:06
Speaker 3: Correct? And would you how comfortable would you feel allowing your children to swim in the ocean and saying you didn't know? Like there should have been an announcement, a letter put underneath every person's door who was staying at that resort. This is what happened last night. Swim at your own risk.

00:16:26
Speaker 2: Robes, you're everybody, very famous scene in Jaws on the dock where the woman comes who's just lost a son, slaps the sheriff said, you knew, and you left these You knew that there was something out there that Robes, to your point, is a very good question that takes more than just forty eight hours to figure out. They should have just shut it down. Let's figure this out. Well, I would have felt more comfortable.

00:16:49
Speaker 3: I would have too.

00:16:50
Speaker 2: They obviously are supposed to know what they're doing, Robes, and if they say there's no danger, I'm supposed to take them at their word. But god dang, can we get it twenty four hours just to feel it out.

00:16:58
Speaker 3: I believe that was the point for these folks, that they were just They said they were shocked. Their jaws were dropped when they saw families swimming in the water hours after this crocodile attack, and before the crocodile had been captured.

00:17:13
Speaker 2: Any kid, you not even yours, if you see a kid swimming after what they just saw the night before. Now, to see a kid swimming in that water, I'm sure they were pissed.

00:17:21
Speaker 3: Ye. And look and this couple said they are traumatized for life. I mean, you cannot unsee that, you cannot unhear those screams. And certainly they were the ones who went into the water to try and help, but obviously there were plenty of people who witnessed this horror. And just to think about the folks who didn't, who just unknowingly went to the beach the next morning saying, isn't this beautiful? Because it is a gorgeous beach and the water is inviting, there are whales. This is just a gorgeous part of the world. I hate that it's something like this another another reason to maybe choose another beach or another area when you hear these types of stories. And that's probably why the look the resorts and their very well aware that they're struggling right now. They've just given recent headlines.

00:18:03
Speaker 2: They're numbers out there that showed they took pretty significant hits after the violence in February, there was Yeah, so March April, that comes up in what spring break times an hour in the summer seat, they took a hit.

00:18:16
Speaker 3: Now you've got a fatal crocodile attack in the ocean along one of the most popular beaches in the world. It's something to take note of for shore but we always appreciate you listening to us. Every one. I'm Amy Roeboch alongside t J.

00:18:29
Speaker 2: Holmes.

00:18:30
Speaker 3: We'll talk to you soon.
