UPDATE: Nolan Wells Official Autopsy Complete, An Arrest Is Made, As Family Reviews Distress Call

There are some significant developments in the search for answers in the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. First, the medical examiner has completed Wells’ autopsy, but the results will not be released until a grand jury reviews the findings along with the rest of the evidence in the case. Second, an arrest has been made following death threats against a local judge whose son was on the boat with Nolan. Meantime, Wells’ family has secured an audio expert to listen to a distress call made by Nolan’s friends about their sinking boat after wild conspiracy theories continue to grow online about what passengers may be saying in the background of the call.

Speaker 1: Hey, the folks, it is Friday, July thirty first, and the official state autopsy on Nolan Wells is complete, but we don't know when we'll know the results. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. Several updates in this headline making I guess controversial and heated story about the death of eighteen year old Nolan Wells and Rold This is going to not sit right with a lot of people. Aren't we waiting to find out how he died? They now know, but they won't tell us yet.

00:00:35
Speaker 2: Yes, and that is just beyond frustrating to not just people who are interested in the case, but to Nolan's family. They don't even get to know at this point what the Medical Examiner's office has determined or what conclusions it came to based on this autopsy that was done on July seventh. It's been a while, and look, with so many and wild theories and conspiracy theories floating around out there, wouldn't it be in the public's interest for the State of Mississippi to at least release cause of death.

00:01:15
Speaker 1: Two things. One said, they know how he died and they're just not telling us yet. I guess it is possible we need to reserve room that maybe this autopsy has come back undetermined. Maybe it has come back and they can't figure out exactly how he died either, that is a possibility. The other thing, Robes. I'm sure if there are investigators, police officers, anybody listening to us, anybody who works in a prosecutor's office anywhere, any DA to hear us, say, why won't they just tell us? They're probably saying, because we have to protect the integrity of our investigation right now, and the grand jury needs to hear this first. Idiots, right, I mean, I get, but we have seen as well Robes cases where they they do make a decision that this is of such public interest that we need to make an exception.

00:02:00
Speaker 3: Yes.

00:02:00
Speaker 2: I think the most recent obvious example is the case of David and Celestrievus Hernandez. We did not even get not a cause of death. We didn't even get it ruled a homicide. Even though her remains were found in a car dismembered, we still actually did not get official word from the Medical Examiner's office, from the DA, from police that she was murdered. It took months for them to even say that much.

00:02:29
Speaker 1: That tells you a lot in the case that high profile having to do with the celebrity having to do with a teenage girl's death and all those salacious details they held on to that Robes they wouldn't even say she was murdered, even though a dismembered body was found, obviously, right. That is how seriously they take it and how close to the vest they have to keep some of this stuff. I do Robes want to leave them room for that, and they have to protect the investigation. But we've also seen Robes. Folks need to know now, yes, because it's wild out there online, it's heated, it's ugly, and it could get dangerous.

00:03:07
Speaker 2: And that is exactly where I was headed to next, because yes, we can point out the investigation and the process that went on with the David Anthony Burke investigation, but in this case with Nolan Wells, with so many wild theories out there on top of the fact, and we'll get into this, how many people are getting death threats. There was even an arrest made yesterday in connection to death threats being made to varying parties here involved in this investigation.

00:03:37
Speaker 3: This is dangerous.

00:03:39
Speaker 2: This is like a powder keg and if we can just get some information something to at least give folks an idea of where this investigation is headed, it could potentially be a public safety service announcement almost at some point, because look, if, for the way we understand it, if the autopsy results are now going to be given to a Mississippi grand jury, who is then going to decide if anyone should be charged in Nolan's death, how long does that process take? Because the DA says all evidence, including the autopsy results, will stay out of the public until and after a grand jury reviews it.

00:04:23
Speaker 1: I mean that we don't have the timeline. I mean, how soon are they going to convene. We're not supposed to even know when grand juries are happening.

00:04:29
Speaker 3: That's true. They're all done in secret probes.

00:04:31
Speaker 1: We have no idea. That is just I know, I get it, and I want to respect and give them room for what they're doing. They but this is this is tough, and it doesn't help. What's most important. What is important robes.

00:04:45
Speaker 3: To find out what happened and to find out the truth of what happened.

00:04:48
Speaker 1: But we have to let the public have some confidence in the results, whatever they may be right now. This is very difficult for a late person for it. No matter how closely you are paying attention, this ropes. Wait a minute, you're telling me you possibly know how he died. That's the whole public debate and why people are fired up, and you're not going to tell us until win. That's hard to sit with, baby.

00:05:11
Speaker 2: It is especially given that this announcement comes about a week after the family did their own independent autopsy, and a lot of hope was pinned on the fact that maybe this independent forensic examiner would be able to shed some light into what happened to Nolan Wells. But unfortunately, because of the original autopsy done by the state medical examiner, there were missing body parts, missing organs, namely his throat, his lungs, his stomach, all the things that this independent forensic examiner would need to be able to look at to determine whether or not he died by drowning, if he suffered, if he was alive when he went into the water, if he had already died by the time he went into the water. How could he possibly determine any of those things without those crucial body parts.

00:05:56
Speaker 1: That was bizarre, like you don't have what you need to do your work, roges us. The first question, did he drown? Did he drown? How do you find that out water in the lungs? Where are his lungs? They're with the first autopsy group, so the second group can't even examine that. That doesn't make any sense.

00:06:17
Speaker 2: No, And the only thing we really got out of that was that there was some red discoloration on the back of his head. Who knows, like, could he have slipped and fallen, hit his head on a boat and quietly slipped under and gotten taken away by the currents. Sure, that's a theory, but without knowing how this examiner could have looked at his different body parts to know exactly when, how where he died. That autopsy was never going to result in answers.

00:06:45
Speaker 1: It was on how we were getting prepared for the results of something that there was no chance we didn't know that ahead of time. Right, you're not going to get an answer. His brain's not there, his lungs aren't there. All the vital organs are gone, So what are we doing? So they clearly showed Okay, there were no abrasions, there were no breaks, There was no right I guess they could some things out, but roam's the lungs. You can't come out if the autopsy and just say, hey, guys, his lungs were filled with water. We believe this was a drowning. Well, I'm saying just the public trust right now is lacking and because of things like this. Just don't tell us that the autopsy's done. Tell us they're just still working.

00:07:31
Speaker 2: Tell us that the investigation is ongoing, and don't give us the detail we know, but you don't get to Yes, that is I think what's pretty tough. So the Wells family, Nolan's family held a press conference yesterday and the first thing that his mother did was plead once again with the public for more information. They did say they were getting about one hundred calls a day, so people are calling in tips or.

00:07:53
Speaker 3: What they know.

00:07:54
Speaker 2: But this was also something that was pretty sad and actually in line with what we're hearing in other headlines. We heard directly from Ben Krump, the family attorney, who said that sick people have been targeting Well's mom with negative reviews.

00:08:11
Speaker 3: Online for her and her workplace.

00:08:14
Speaker 2: She's a nurse who works at a hospital and they are going on to I don't even know where you go to review someone's professionalism or your experience with them at work, and they're just blasting her and it's just disgusting. And they also said she's receiving threatening messages, emails, texts, phone calls, and just harassing mail in the regular old male So all of these just the thought that people take the time to harass a victim's mom. Whether he accidentally drowned or he was the recipient of some sort of violence, it doesn't matter. This woman is grieving for her son, and all she is doing is asking for answers. I haven't heard her or seen her point the finger at end anyone.

00:09:01
Speaker 1: I'm confused why she is harassable, Like, what has she done that upset anybody?

00:09:06
Speaker 3: Ask questions about how her son died?

00:09:09
Speaker 1: Huh?

00:09:10
Speaker 3: And question Mississippi authorities that perhaps she doesn't trust their investigation.

00:09:17
Speaker 1: That's a lot of stuff you can question. Direct all of that to Ben Crump if you want to. I just don't understand why anybody would go after this mom. I don't care what she stands up. She's earned the right. She has a dead child. Just give that lady a bray. I don't I don't understand that I'm trying to remember what she's done that could have been deemed offensive by somebody.

00:09:35
Speaker 2: I don't think of I can't think of one thing personally, Like you said, if you had any ill will towards her attorney, that's a whole other set of issues.

00:09:43
Speaker 1: But not saying that you should what I'm just saying, I'm not here that I would go, Okay, they don't.

00:09:47
Speaker 2: Said some things that I could see and kissed people off. But Nolan Well's mom has been nothing but loving and kind and forgiving. And it's fair. It's fair to ask how your son died. It's fair to ask what happened? How did no one see him? How did There are a lot of unanswered questions that I frankly believe she does deserve the answer to. So that's outrageous to me that she would be targeted in any way, shape or form. And yet there's another mom who also has been threatened, and this has resulted in an arrest. On Thursday, a twenty seven year old man from California was arrested because authorities say he sent specific death threats to a Mississippi judge whose son was on the boat with Nolan Wells, and so these threats were specific. They warned of a bomb, a package that was being sent and promised blood and violence. So the language was direct, specific and exactly towards this Mississippi judge. So that man has been arrested. So isn't that crazy. In the disappearance of Nolan Wells, the only arrest that's made so far are not the disappearance but the death, the mysterious death of Nolan Wells. The only arrest so far is a man who threatened to judge whose son was on the boat.

00:11:05
Speaker 3: That's where we are.

00:11:07
Speaker 1: Well, we need answers because this is you get the wrong or I say, I was about to say the right, but just the wrong scenario on the wrong day with the wrong people in the wrong mood. And Robes, this too could just set things off. Were praying to the quieter angels, if you will, Robes. We're trying to wait for answers. But this is one of those. This is the process. We get it, we understand, and Robes, we can respect. We know this, but it's tough.

00:11:34
Speaker 2: Look to imagine that some of Nolan's friends did not attend his funeral service, his memorial service because of the death threats. Many of them have had to disable and their family members their social media accounts. They are literally in hiding because of the death threats. I mean, so you're talking about Nolan's family, friends and their family of Nolan, and it's it's out of control. And that's why this need for clarification and for transparency is actually.

00:12:05
Speaker 3: In the matter of public safety.

00:12:08
Speaker 1: That's good to point out. We're talking about Nolan Wells family and how important it is for the family and the supporters to get answers, robes. Those other kids need them, they wanted to, they need. This is almost for them to be exonerated. If somebody was up to something and did wrong involved in all this, hopefully they find that out, but there is a chance this was some awful accident that needs to get out there that they need that these folks are they're being accused of being killers. They begin accused of being racists and killers. So there is value for everyone to get this information out and for the public to believe what they hear.

00:12:46
Speaker 3: Absolutely.

00:12:47
Speaker 2: And so when we come back, we're going to talk about more of what Nolan Wells family is doing. They are conducting an independent investigation outside of what the state of Mississippi is doing, and they had some pretty big headlines in their press conference yesterday. Will tell you what's being done next.

00:13:04
Speaker 3: And and and.

00:13:12
Speaker 2: Welcome back everyone to Amy and TJ. We are talking about several updates in the Nolan Wells investigation. And we heard from the family yesterday, Ben Kromp, along with his parents, several others. They are giving the latest information that they have that they've received.

00:13:28
Speaker 3: And look, we're not going to get.

00:13:29
Speaker 2: Into it or play into so many of these wild conspiracy theories that are going on right now about this distress call that was released. The friends of Nolan who were on that boat that he arrived in they ended up leaving early because they had a distress call that was made public, kind of like what you hear nine one one calls. And some people are trying to claim that they've enhanced the audio and they've heard other things in the background, but the reality is, look, this is a call where they are just telling an emergency a service that they're bilge pump, stop working, we're sinking. Can y'all please come, And so they were asking for help. Now Ben Crump said that they have now in their possession the full original audio recording of that distress call, and they have now retained audio engineering experts to review the call. So anyone who thinks they heard something or they saw something, or they even maybe possibly listen to something that was doctor the family says they are on it and they have an expert that is going to look into it. So I guess maybe that can hopefully put some of this to rest, that they will release what their expert found.

00:14:38
Speaker 1: Look, it's amazing what they can do technology these days. We've seen in a bunch of trials before they bring in these audio experts. They can enhance this and that, and you can hear things in the background you can't normally hear with the naked ear. Sure, if they think there's something on there, I would love to hear it, But it is too bad right now. Robes people aren't. They see something online and then they reposted with their comment and correct just spread like wildfire, and so much of this stuff is absolutely false.

00:15:07
Speaker 3: Correct and you just this is another example.

00:15:10
Speaker 2: You cannot believe now even what you see or even what you hear, because the technology is so incredible now that you can we all know you can doctor anything these days. So we should all just wait to hear what the Wells family's expert says that they found and at least take that into a different type of context and what's online right now. The other headline, the family says they're consulting with oceanic engineering experts to understand tides and whether the impact that could have had on Well where on where Well's body was found. If that makes sense, they can maybe backtrack it to figure out where he entered the water versus where he ended up there on that beach, So that will be interesting. And they also recently issued subpoenas to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Life, three six S, Snapchat, and TikTok. They want data from Well's account. Remember the family said they thought that someone they had had the phone for a while, the friends that maybe someone had deleted photos, videos, messages. So they are now subpoenaing the social media accounts attached to their son to see if they can get any data that might have been deleted. Huh so if he sent something on Snapchat? Power?

00:16:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, who has that subpoena power to require I thought only a government agency or official would have the power to subpoena and say, you need to hand this over, and I guess I usually meta and all those companies are usually pretty good about working with families and when they are crimes or whatnot, Why wouldn't they want to give that information up. I mean, it seemed like they could just ask for it.

00:16:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, just maybe who knows if this is like an outward like an independent investigation, if they're doing this in conjunction with the police, and certainly obviously the only issue.

00:16:59
Speaker 3: Would be privacy issues.

00:17:00
Speaker 2: But I think all of these social media companies know what's at stake here with this case. This is not this is a very familiar investigation to just about everybody in this country. And then they're also asking the other thing that they mentioned is they want prosecutors to bring in outside experts to examine the cell phones of all of Well's friends who were on the boat and went to the island with him. So those are that's the steps they're taking in their independent investigation.

00:17:28
Speaker 1: All right, as long as it keeps this thing moving forward. But the key to this is in the possession of the medical examiner, and we can't see it. I mean that medical examiner, Good god, what does he know it's medical examiners. We've seen you mentioned the Forbit case. I mean, he's out there, that medical examiner that please let me release the results of my autopsy.

00:17:48
Speaker 2: He probably was so sick of getting call after call after call after call from members of the media. And I'm sure that is almost certainly the case as well in Mississippi. So look, again a lot of developments and this is an active investigation. We will keep our eye on this situation, but just wanted to bring you the very latest developments in the Nolan Wells investigation. And with that, everyone, we always appreciate you listening to us. I'm Amy Roboch alongside TJ.

00:18:13
Speaker 3: Holmes. We'll talk soon.
