Trump Lies To The World (But For Good Reason This Time)

Trump Lies To The World (But For Good Reason This Time)

We are just learning about a secret operation that took place in front of the world: President Trump boarded Air Force One in Turkey last month, but immediately sneaked out the side entrance and onto a catering truck. That truck promptly whisked him away to a military jet, leaving the press corps and members of his staff thinking they were flying back with the President, unaware he was on an entirely different plane. This was all arranged amid Iranian threats to the President’s life, and given Turkey’s proximity to Iran, it was deemed the safest way back. We wonder how those journalists feel now that they know they were used as decoys.

Speaker 1: Hey there, everybody. It is Tuesday, August eleventh, and we are just learning that President Trump pulled a fast one, literally, something that most of us have never seen, something that the world didn't see, and in fact, journalists didn't even realize had happened. Who were on Air Force One, I say, with him, or so they thought. And with that, everyone, welcome to this episode of Amy and DJ. This is this is like a scene out of a movie, out of Mission Impossible. Even you were.

00:00:36
Speaker 2: Saying, um, this is extraordinary. You said the president pulled a fast win when we started here. That can mean anything. But this is one I give him credit for. I applaud him for, I applaud the Secret Service for. And this is one where I say, do what you gotta do. It's okay that we did not know for a while where the President of the United States was in the world because he didn't want us to know and intentionally fooled the world for security reasons. It's just extraordinary. And yes, as a fan of James bond Flick's spy movies, everything that Tom Cruise has ever done in Mission Impossible, yes, this was kind of cool.

00:01:17
Speaker 1: Uh. Yes, I believe. The Washington Post called it an elaborate ruse. And look, I think most Americans can understand why, perhaps in moments, something like this would be necessary when it involves the President of the United States and threats against his life. But I wonder how the journalists and some of the White House staff members who were on that plane, who believed the President was on that plane, who are now learning that they were actually on a decoy plane, and that that plane that they were on was deemed so unsafe that the President had to protect to get on it and secretly leave it to get on a different way.

00:02:05
Speaker 3: Okay, we put it that way. It was so unsafe.

00:02:08
Speaker 2: Now, I'm sure they didn't put these people on a plane that they thought was a high probability of being shot down. However, the fact that they wanted to pull the President off of it means there was an increased probability of some kind. And if that's even a fraction of a fraction, yes, I would as a person on that plane, like, yeah, I'm just a sitting duck for y'all.

00:02:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm literally a living, breathing decoy for the President of the United States. And I didn't agree to be. I didn't know I was they said, shoot it this one instead of the one he's actually on.

00:02:47
Speaker 2: That parts extraordinary, and I'm sure there'll be some reporters giving some accounts of how they.

00:02:53
Speaker 3: Feel about it.

00:02:53
Speaker 1: Yes, after the fact, that's crazy. If you knew about it at that moment, I'd be getting my butt off that plane immediately. That's just the truth.

00:03:02
Speaker 2: Well, they've made some announcements on my plan about mechanical failures or they're checking something out, and I wanted to.

00:03:08
Speaker 3: Get off exactly.

00:03:09
Speaker 1: So, yes, how did how and when did this all take place? This was back on July eighth, that NATO summit with world leaders. You may remember it was the night after US forces renewed strikes against Iran. And I laugh when I say that, because that is pretty much well, there's a lot of different nights where that could have been. It's hard to keep track of all the times we've stopped and started striking Iran, But this was an exceptional moment where the ceasefire was basically over, the talks had completely deteriorated, and the US began air strikes. And so yes, there were increased threats against the President's life. Who was overseas in Turkey for that NATO summit, so we all were told, and it all seemed a bit fishy that the President was going to be flying from Turkey to the UK and eventually to the United States on the old Air Force one, not the new one that the country of Qatar had gifted him. No, that plane, according to the President, was going to England without him and without the press scorps because he was going to let some troops to it. That never really.

00:04:15
Speaker 2: Felt right, this whole story, from the jump, the fact that he was flying the plane or none of this. None of it made sense, and the President was giving public statements that didn't make a whole lot of sense. We're piecing it together now and it is starting to make sense that there was so much he could say. But he flew on this new plane. They send it away, so robes were thinking, or the story was, and he was upset about New York Times and others during reporting that that plane that the Qataris had given wasn't up to speed in terms of security, and everybody, well, why in the world would you let him fly on a plane if it didn't have all the bells and whistles up the other plane. That didn't make sense. Really you're just sending the plane away to like a show and tell to some troops.

00:04:56
Speaker 3: That didn't make any sense. So none of it made sense.

00:05:00
Speaker 1: It made sense, but we actually had no idea what was really going on. What we all saw, what the world saw, was President Trump boarding after we hear this, heard this bizarre explanation as to why he was getting on the old Air Force one. But we see him boarding the plane. He's in front of the television cameras, he's waving. He gets on the plane. Okay, and now just for your visual, the journalists who board the plane with him and some White House staff they enter through a different door. They enter through the back of the plane, towards the back of the plane. So while we see the President get on the plane, what we didn't realize was happening is that on the other side there is another door and a catering truck had pulled up. And you've seen it probably if you've boarded a plane or you've seen other planes. They actually, through hydraulics, lift up this catering cart to get food and drinks onto the plane. Well, according to the Washing Post, according to their sources, he then literally just goes whoop right out the other door into that catering cart, is lowered down and then gets whisked away to another military jet. All the wild journalists are boarding the plane through the back, and some White House staff thinking the President has already been on the plane or is on the plane. It just seems like a normal, operating, standard flight.

00:06:31
Speaker 2: Bactly, we've seen this one hundred times, hundreds of times. The US president goes up the steps when he's on a foreign trip, he turns, he waves, he disappears into the plane, and that's it. We see him back at the White House hours later. That's what happened here for all the world, that's what happened, But behind the scenes is not what happened. Again, we all just assumed it was being reported where he was, what his movements were.

00:06:57
Speaker 3: He was wheels up, he was on.

00:06:58
Speaker 2: Air Force one, and he was not. They intentionally lied to the world for safety reasons. And this is just a rare one of these cases. And folks, you all have seen this before. Anybody's bordered a plane. You're first getting on and the flight attendant greets you right up there in that front little galley and sometimes that other door cross the way is open and you can see them loading in food. Yep, the president stepped off into that thing. Wild to think about it, he did that.

00:07:24
Speaker 1: So yeah, he's being whisked away to this other smaller military plane where apparently Pete Hegseth Also he gets up and publicly boards this plane to make it look like it's a legitimate flight that the Secretary of Defense or the Secretary of War is boarding. But all the while Trump's already on there. He's been secretly he already boarded it, and now Hegseeth goes up and the two of them go on this plane together. Meantime, regular Air Force one is taking off, and this is a note. The journalists were told to close their window shades. Okay, and this will come back to be important later, but that, I guess is in standard. But they were all they noted in the pool, in the press pool that they were all asked to lower their window shades. So here's the interesting thing. So we see it take off. We think the president's on board. He's on a different plane. It's still unclear at this point. You haven't seen this, have you. How he then reboarded Air Force one without anyone knowing. After landing in the UK and then deplaned as if he had been a board Air Force One the entire time.

00:08:34
Speaker 2: I'm trying to saw this somewhere. Did we see him once he got to the UK?

00:08:40
Speaker 1: Yes, we saw him exit Air Force one. So they must have before they were able.

00:08:46
Speaker 3: They must have.

00:08:46
Speaker 1: Brought another catering. Oh yeah, he trucked back up, loaded him up the same way they loaded him off. And now he exits the plane as if he had been on that plane the entire time.

00:08:57
Speaker 3: No reason to think any differently. That was really really cool.

00:09:00
Speaker 1: There was nothing to see here. No one knew anything. But then the President shared a plane on the new Air Force One back home to the United States, and he's with those members of the media who all thought he had been on that plane with them prior, and he then starts taking questions about the security threat against his life. He doesn't talk about or acknowledge in any way, shape or form, this massive rust they've just pulled off. But a journalist asked him, Hey, why did we all have to lower our shades when we took off? This is what the President said. Now, it's very interesting given what we know, he said, because you're probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleeze bags that we have to deal with. He said, I'm he has threats against him all the time, but he said that he is number one on Iran's list. Here's the part that really stood out to me. He said this to the journalist. But if I go, you go right, perhaps someday you want to change professions. That has so much more weight to it now that we know he wasn't even board that plane and those journalists were on a decoy plane that at least Secret Service thought was dangerous enough that the President needed to be removed from that plane.

00:10:11
Speaker 2: It was it stood out at the time, and the president does this. He started talking a little bit during that trip, and on more than one occasion, making little comments about them wanting to kill him, that they were after him, that they run in he's number one on the list. That was a couple of days there where he was mentioning this a lot and that comment. And you can tell that the president and sometimes I think he just can't help himself, like I know something you don't know. Oh yeah, he just eats some of that up sometimes and sometimes it scares the hell out of you. He said, you don't even know about the stuff I know about in these briefings. I'm like, holy hell, dude, that it felt that way, you know, yeah, you know that he just in the way and the tone and the way he was handling at the time, it seemed like something was up. The BS answers he was given, which we knew were bs at the time, just couldn't prove it about. Yeah, I just want take a.

00:11:01
Speaker 3: Tour of the plane, check it out. All this was madness. I have no problem at all.

00:11:06
Speaker 2: And I don't think he's getting criticism for how he did this and pulled it off. But this is necessary to protect the president.

00:11:12
Speaker 3: Do what you gotta do.

00:11:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess it's just one of those things though, when you have the president posting on his truth social posts or truth social site that he's making a point to say he's taking the old Air Force one for quote old time sake, deliberately not telling the truth on his truth social and I understand the reasoning behind needing to keep it secret, but it just seemed unnecessary for him to even like publicly say something that wasn't true.

00:11:44
Speaker 3: Oh, it was part of the ruse.

00:11:46
Speaker 2: Now, this is look a lot of people just listened to what you said and say, hey, he says stuff is not true all the time. At least this time there was a legitimate national security reason to say it. I got new problem with him gumping on truth social and making the Iranians think, and more so that he's on that plane now that makes them a bigger target, my fellow journalists. I don't like that necessarily, but it all worked out. They did what they had to do. This is just and it reminds you of the times that we are in, how serious things are. And yes it's different. He doesn't have to do this in the US, but Rhodes he was thirteen hundred miles from Tehran. The president isn't usually in theater that close to a war zone that often do what.

00:12:26
Speaker 3: You gotta do.

00:12:27
Speaker 1: I wonder, now that this story is out, if he'll just because to your point how much he loves maybe even in this moment, to say, gotcha, we pulled one. You know, we were able to basically fool not just the Iranians but the world.

00:12:43
Speaker 3: Haha.

00:12:44
Speaker 1: I wonder if he'll make statements about this today now that it's out.

00:12:47
Speaker 3: They'll probably beg him not to.

00:12:51
Speaker 2: I think so far the White House was just referring back to a previous statement from Oh, I've got it that says misdirection or whatever. They so, I don't think they should say much. I think they're going to say much. I think he might not be able to help himself, but say something.

00:13:04
Speaker 3: But what are you supposed to do?

00:13:05
Speaker 2: Roues, we're negotiating with the country that's trying to kill the president. They think they're actively I guess that's nothing new. But you've got to sit across a table from people who are actively trying to kill the president. And what does that do for negotiations?

00:13:20
Speaker 1: Yes, it requires some mission impossible tactics apparently. So when we come back, we will tell you what the official White House response was and go back to one other time where we actually know there was an Air Force one decoy and really the only modern moment where we didn't know in this country where our president was welcome back to everyone, to Amy and TJ. We have the official White House response to this new reporting, and yes, avoid really directly addressing it, but here is what Stephen Chung had to say to the Washington Post. The new Air Force One is a state of the art aircraft that has been fitted with high level security protocols that ensure the safety of the president and his staff. As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats.

00:14:27
Speaker 2: That makes sense, and leave it at that does leave it at that Secret Service gives no damn about these things. What was a joke he was telling recently that there were giving him some update about some new security or some fancy new technology or something, and he said, wow, that's that's crazy. You should make sure we tell everybody don't talk about this. And they said, no, mister President, we're telling you to keep it secret. That's one of these things.

00:14:52
Speaker 3: I don't know.

00:14:52
Speaker 2: He can help himself, but this is one of those cases robes where they're number one priority. That's nothing else to do but keep that man healthy and alive.

00:15:02
Speaker 3: Yes, that's it.

00:15:03
Speaker 1: They have one job.

00:15:04
Speaker 2: Whatever you got to do, give and we have to take him in an ice cream cream truck across Manhattan to keep him safe. We'll do it. I just this is just it's cool. We don't get these kinds of reminders. I guess roads of the seriousness. Sometimes the man has been shot at for God's sake, But still this feels like another one of those reminders of just what the stakes are and just how volatile and dangers of a world we're living in.

00:15:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, and at a reminder that the organization that is tasked to protect him has a word in front of its name, secret Secret Service. So maybe none of us should be surprised. I was surprised to learn that this doesn't happen very often, at least as far as we know. Maybe we should point that out as well. But in recent history. They pointed to President Clinton when he visited Pakistan, but all the way back in two thousand, but we knew about it immediately afterwards because he disembarked from a plain white jet that was following Air Force one, so they didn't know it while they were in flight, the reporters, no one else. But when they landed, President Clinton didn't walk out of Air Force one. They didn't do this elaborate ruse where they made it look like he was on Air Force one. They actually just said, yeah, he actually wasn't in that plane when he was visiting Pakistan. And then look they say that there were other times according to high level officials, but we would never know that. It's just never going to be known, and it's probably best. But the only other moment, I'm sure you can guess where there was a period of time that we can say we did not know where our president was, can you I'm sure you can probably guess when that was.

00:16:43
Speaker 2: I'm trying to remember how many hours it was that we did not know where Bush was and we didn't need to know where he was flying around and everybody was trying to figure out what was going on, and they were to how much under attack were we at the time?

00:16:56
Speaker 3: How many hours you remember how I don't know how.

00:16:58
Speaker 1: They said the first few hours after the initial attacks took place. And look, obviously it took a couple hours for all the series of attacks to take place in well in Pennsylvania, Washington, d c. And of course here in New York City, but they didn't reveal his location. Eventually, they did tell us that he had been taken to a military facility in Nebraska. But there were hours and hours, I don't know how long do you have it that they did not know where President Bush was and he and look, that's a good thing we're all okay with that, I think, and look to your point, we're all okay with the fact that Secret Service needs to do what they need to do to protect the president of the United States. I just I feel for those journalists. I imagine what that must be like now learning after the fact that you were actually I don't want to say potentially collateral damage. But you know what, in terms of keeping this country safe, keeping our president safe, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. That's a little frightening.

00:18:05
Speaker 3: And they shined up.

00:18:06
Speaker 2: They did, they signed up, and there have been times where they were with the president. I means over the years. I remember stories of the Air Force. One happened to take off a certain way out of.

00:18:16
Speaker 3: Baghdad.

00:18:17
Speaker 2: Wasn't it like they had to almost shoot straight up like a rocket and taken off and getting up and down out of that they've done and row. If you're that close to the president, there's some risks. You understand, there's some risk involved. I don't know what they need to sign off on, or any of them are that upset about it. We get it. I would just be curious. I don't think anyone would recklessly if they knew or had very strong evidence that a missile was going to be fired at that plane, they would not have let everybody get on that plane.

00:18:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, I just I refer back to the president's own words to the journalists when he got back on a plane with them moments later.

00:18:55
Speaker 3: If I go, you go look close.

00:18:57
Speaker 2: The guy died in Pennsylvania. It was a firefighter. I found the fire Somebody was shooting at the president, right if you are in his vicinity, people are targeting this guy. Oh so this far for the course. But this is a fascinating story of what they had to pull off. And how you wrote how many assassination attempts I mean, like real, yeah, nug just there's always threats out there. There were real efforts being.

00:19:23
Speaker 1: Made, legitimate and specific, and look it is. It is fascinating and I would use the word impressive. I'm impressed by what they were able to pull off in front of the world, in front of journalists, in front of members of their own staff, all of them were in the dark about what was actually happening.

00:19:43
Speaker 2: It is amazing that he is the most maybe the most famous man in the world. Cameras on him NonStop, and he was able to avoid them and y'all didn't know where he was. That is just cool. What was the other plane as the military was see a third?

00:20:01
Speaker 3: Does that?

00:20:02
Speaker 2: I think it happens automatically, Babe, that that plane became.

00:20:06
Speaker 1: Air Force one without anyone knowing.

00:20:08
Speaker 3: Every plane he's on has that call sign. That's just cool.

00:20:12
Speaker 1: Stuff, all right. And with that everyone, we always appreciate you listening to us. I'm made robot alongside TJ. Holmes. We'll talk soon
