Okay, and I have a lot of melancholy when I think about this, and I'm dying because you guys were so young when you wrote this. So we have to discuss all of the things. And it aired on August fourth, two thousand and two. Wow, I know, right, it's crazy.

Speaker 1: Right is crazy, but here we are. While here we are, it's all good because we're doing great, right, We're doing great. It's all good. And I have so many thoughts about the subject matter now as opposed to.

Speaker 1: Yeah. And this was directed by John David Coles, which I literally do not remember whoever directed this John David Colets very lovely, but I remember so much about Atlantic City but not being.

Speaker 3: It's interesting, right, well, my memory, and I realized this was our third the third script. We wrote the first script of our second season on Sex and the City, and I realized, much like giving birth, I felt like our first berth was my mother with myself and it was like, obviously we worked very hard and we learned so much and all that, but it was a relatively easy berth. And then our next berth was change of address, and that was harder. We had less time to write it. We had a bigger rewrite after the table read. So that felt like our second birth was.

Speaker 3: Nobody told me that labor gets worse with your second delivery. But interesting, I didn't know, but anyway I did not is for our third script, slash birth. It was hard.

Speaker 2: This for me most I think this was the maybe of all the scripts we wrote for the show, it was the most kind of academic at the time, especially exercise, because it was a very uh and this the origin of it, I know, very I remember very clearly came from Michael.

Speaker 5: He had a vision about but this idea of the idea of old ladies and end of you know.

Speaker 2: If it's not your you know, your your husband, your life partner, it's these women, it's like your female friends.

Speaker 4: He had this very gut feeling about.

Speaker 2: And it felt like a fascinating exercise and an interesting idea to play around with. But as we began trying to actually write it, it just it was difficult because the more sort of theoretical the idea, the harder it is to dramatize and to actually see illustrated.

Speaker 3: Sure, yeah, I have to confess, and I've already confessed this so like it's it's like Michael's heard me tell the story. But sitting in the writer's room beginning season three, we're looking up at the whiteboard, and I think we've talked on this podcast and other people have is like we had a big whiteboard and you would first it was just like brainstorming. You put up ideas, things that made us laugh, stories dates, bad dates people had. But then once you get closer and closer to mapping out the season, we would put up you know, episode one, two, three, and like anything we knew about the episode. So episode three, he was like, that'll be an Atlantic City, and I decided, for whatever reason, I was like, well, we're not writing that. Like I just was like we had such these like very emotional connections to my mother and myself. I'm to change of address. So I guess I decided, like that's somebody else's story.

Speaker 2: And we did have we did have connections to Atlantic City, Like my family had a house there for most of my life. Not in Atlantic City, but in a town a few miles away from it.

Speaker 1: Did you ever see when we went on Oprah which must have been I don't know if it was during the show or for the end of the show, and she asked us, all the four of us are there, and she asked us who was the cheapest, and Cynthia was.

Speaker 3: You know, But it's a mindset, it is, It really is. And I know some people change when they are more comfortable later in life, but like.

Speaker 3: But the other thing I realized about this episode that was both dark. It was a dark episode, yes say it, and I think it reminded me how hard it was. We decided coming back to that season season five that first of all, it was a dark time. We had just had September eleventh, Carrie was alone. We very intentionally, we didn't want to come back and just do like guy of the Week, like wanted her to really be alone. And it turns out not just like in life, is that hard and for some people very dark, but as a raid it was very hard for sure, like give her a drive, because we didn't want it to be surrounded, you know, targeted at a man. But what I liked in the darkness of it was it's it was a rare episode where the reality of how hard it is to get your friends altogether I forgot.

Speaker 3: The picture that she's like, it's been so long since we have a picture of the four of us, man runner in the episode, I'd forgotten that she just wants to get a picture of the four of them, which is so listen, just the.

Speaker 1: It's so ahead of its time, right, like in so many ways. I mean, I feel like the conversations that we're having within the show are very much cultural conversations. Now you know about aging because obviously the population has aged, right, and you know single women who are choosing to be single, but then also their friends are so much more important, right. It has that all of that in it, and she's saying, we have to honor this, we have to put energy into it, like that little clip where she talks to Miranda on the bus and she's like, we have to you know, you have to commit and like, you know, take.

Speaker 1: It's like incredibly pressing to the cultural shift towards honoring our friendships, especially as we're getting older in life, Like it's amazing.

Speaker 2: This was an episode where watching it again and I wonder how I felt. I wonder how much I felt this at the time that we wrote and shot it. But like, this is one of the more needy Carrie as a needy friend than I've ever seen her before.

Speaker 2: It's I was very much on Miranda's side on the bus with the New Yorker magazine as a mom and like picturing hers, I had forgotten the whole baby Josie Doe with Steve me too, And I mean she she had had me going at the door when she answered the door and said, oh, I'm sorry, I can't go.

And I have to say, there are so many things I know we've talked, yes, yes, go back and do differently now than we are moms, But that was the one thing that is exactly true. Like, first of all that whole like it's I thought you were going to not kill the baby on the weekends, and Red felt every day when the kids were a little like, oh yeah, this thing alive.

But I think it's because because I'm a single mother would show as she but there is Steve, but whatever, But like you have the guilt at the same time, So I don't think I would have been openly hot diggity dog do you know what I mean? And I have a weird thing and I don't know if you guys ever feel this where like to get out of the house is really hard, right, like like they want things and you can't give them. But once more and I'm like, yeah, yeah, the choir, Yes, but I have to get some distance before I can actually feel decent about it, you know what I mean?

I mean I also was torn in the whole Charlotte carry scene later in the bar, where you know, poor Charlotte has been like like she's had a rough time obviously, but then also like you know, she feels all uncomfortable about her age, which no one seems to share with her, which is interesting, and then she just wants a male attention, which she's like, yes, not that terrible for her. You know, Carrie's like Kelly.

Yeah, And I think looking back, yeah, we could say she was probably depressed. I mean, she is presenting as someone who's depressed. I'm not not I don't have a yeah therapist, right right, right, but she's like really struggling right that way. And I think we also juxtapose that with we had all just found out Sarah Jessica was pregnant and.

Speaker 3: I think we that was also a seismic shift for the show, the cast, and I think it I think the episode probably reflects that feeling. It was both she's alone as a character, she was alone and feeling terrified.

Speaker 2: And I think and I think maybe maybe we were so leaser focused on figuring out what her actual internal growth was that maybe she we sort of ran out of the real estate for her to sort of take in for friends as well to say, well, and you you really are you know, you've come a long way even in that episode, you can't you come a long way?

Speaker 1: Charlotte does for sure, which I'd also kind of forgotten about, you know what I mean, Like I had remembered that dress because that dress lives on on the you know Internet. But what I remember about it was feeling very stressed, you know, and like a lot of do you remember like the drama about what that dress would be like? Because I say, oh, I've gone to the shop in the casino.

Okay, guys, I'm going to say that it is Charlotte in that crazy pink dress that she supposedly gets from the gift shop at the casino, partly because all I feel when I watch it is anxiety because I am taken back to filming that scene in SloMo where they pan up my body and just feeling like I wanted to die. But I can say, since it lives on in Instagram and whatever, you know, that look great and I should have relaxed. And it's nice to have those kind of weird moments on film where you're dressing in a way that you would never normally dress. So I'm just gonna I'm just gonna give it to Charlotte this week. It's a Hondai hot take, celebrating iconic moments, bold moves, and unforgettable style, just like Hyundai.

So there was a lot of conversation because it was it also needed to be tacky, right, because we've said, oh, she's gone to the shop in the casino, and Carrie says something about, no, that's for women who run out of money and need to you know, trade sexual favorite.

But I have too much back there to put a mic back back there and not see it, especially back then, like nowadays they're smaller, but back then they were not that tiny. So it was like a whole drama. Right, So I'm kind of clutching that string on my shoulder because I don't want my mic to fall off basically, right, I know it's a whole drama. I also I couldn't put the the mic would normally be on our chest, right, but everything was so for it to me, so I literally think it's like right here on my shoulder, do you know what I mean? It was a whole crazy thing. And I just remember feeling like it was just going to fall off me, Like I did not feel like I was just you know what I mean, Like it fell so uncomfortable, so uncomfortable. Also, I feel uncomfortable with people looking at me like that, right, But the whole point was the slow mow entrance in them to be all shocked, and I just remember being just like I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die, but I did sign you know you hold it off. Thank you.

Speaker 3: The other thing I remember that was so stressful about shooting in that casino, and just one understands we had we had a very tiny window that they would let us shoot. I remember we had to get there at like five am. It was something insane because we could only shoot till like three or four pm. It was a very short day for time. But the day that we shot where when the guy says to Miranda that whole thing, yes, fat ass, we had to get that shot. We were so close to the wire we were it was we're about to have to leave, kicked out out and we had to figure out a way to shoot that in as few shots as possible. And I remember, and this was long before I directed, but I felt like like this is all on my shoulders, Like I was so stressed out, and I was like John, who actually directed it.

Speaker 3: We only have like twelve minutes left, Like I was having a toe. I was completely cool as a cucumber. It was like fine, it's fine, We're gonna do this.

So on a certain level, you know that. And the way to get the scene done is not to go to the stress place because you got to stay in the energy of the scene.

We couldn't bring our craft services in or hetering in, and I just remember going to that depressing like corporate whatever room it was, and having turkey deli meat sandwiches for like every meal.

Speaker 1: My god, I just remember. I think I blocked that out a week, like where how what was it? Probably probably five days? Yeah, interesting because it felt like so long because we would be in the dark casino like in the show when we go out onto the trolley, I'm like, oh, thank god, like and I think that was how we felt. Though I also think that was shot in the wee hours, not at sunset. I don't know for sure, because I know you talk about it like the pink sky, pink sky.

And then our next berth was change of address, and that was harder. We had less time to write it. We had a bigger rewrite after the table read. So that felt like our second birth was.

You put up ideas, things that made us laugh, stories dates, bad dates people had. But then once you get closer and closer to mapping out the season, we would put up you know, episode one, two, three, and like anything we knew about the episode. So episode three, he was like, that'll be an Atlantic City, and I decided, for whatever reason, I was like, well, we're not writing that. Like I just was like we had such these like very emotional connections to my mother and myself. I'm to change of address. So I guess I decided, like that's somebody else's story.

But what I liked in the darkness of it was it's it was a rare episode where the reality of how hard it is to get your friends altogether I forgot.

And I think as an actor, you know, we all when you're trying to get parts, you had to lie. You had to be a two years within the year that the part was supposed to be, right, so you could be two years younger or two years older, but you couldn't be outside of that because they were so literal and they're casting right, and no one would check back in the day, I mean, right, and then I remember we used to be very annoyed. They would always people or whoever magazine would always put if they were doing an article on you, kristin thirty seven, kristin thirty whatever. It was, why like did you do that to the men? No? Right, And at a certain point I think they stopped, or there was this pressure to get people to try to stop, but I don't feel like it's ever really stopped, you know what I'm saying. There was also the wonderful thing of our show of saying like, no, we're trying in some ways to rewrite these things, you know. And that's part of the reason I think our show has the life that it has is because we're saying, like, have you ever seen the things on Instagram about like don't worry? You're just in the second season of Sex and the City, you know, don't worry, you know, And they'll show different clips of like what Carrie's Charles, It's.
