The Kimmel Controversy Escalates: FCC Will Reportedly Challenge ABC Station Broadcast Licenses

It’s widely believed this is in direct retaliation for Jimmy Kimmel’s late night joke saying Melania Trump was glowing like an “expectant widow.” White House spokesman Steven Cheung went so far as to post on X that Kimmel is a “sh*t human being” who should be shunned for the rest of his life.

I believe Jane Fonda and George Clooney have been shouting it from the rooftops, but that's not surprising. I believe they did the last time around as well, So I know that they have been two very vocal voices on the other side of things, which I don't know.

Speaker 3: Yes, And the concern is that when you have the chairman of the FCC, and this is not the first time he has threatened to revoke or review broadcast licenses based on programming that the Trump administration doesn't like. And so the concern is here that if if ABC or Disney were to suddenly punish Kimmel because of the threat of something like this, that now you're basically, on the largest scale and in a very public way, threatening and very much so discouraging any sort of programming or content that's anything against the Trump administration or anything that the Trump administration doesn't like, which is concerning on its face, don't even need to explain that. But certainly this would also potentially be unlawful. It's certainly unprecedented. I've never heard of an FCC chairman when they're upset about content, going after the content providers and threatening to revoke licenses because they've said something that upset the president. That's deeply concerning and it should concern everyone if that is in fact what's going on, that there is a punitive arm out there trying to restrict content. This is a big First Amendment issue. Now talking about first Amendment, this would be a huge First Amendment issue.

But I don't think there's any question that he has gotten us and our politics and our discourse to this point. I don't know if Gavin Newsom was dropping F bombs via x before he started mixing it up with Trump. I don't know if Pritzker they're in Illinois, was talking the way he used to talk. I don't know if the mayor of Minneapolis was dropping f bombs during press conferences before Ice came to town. I don't know, but I don't remember that being the case.

Speaker 3: But on public comments about controversial topics, I had never before, truly this administration heard on a regular basis folks just dropping F bombs and using terrible language, name calling to describe political rivals or people who don't think like you do. And by the way, I am not saying in any way, shape or form that it excuses. Oh well they started it, so yeah, of course we're going to do it. But unfortunately it grabs headlines. And because we have such a click bait society, if you can say something that commands a headline and then that news and I use that loosely organization can get extra clicks therefore more money. Then yeah, you're incentivized to report it, and you're incentivized to say it because now your name's boldfaced, your name is attached to a story, and people know who you are, and they'll they're either for you or against you, but at least they know you and they feel something about you, which is half the battle when it comes to being re elected or being viewed, watched, read, whatever. This is all a game, and sadly we all lose as a civilization.

And look, it's just it's awful. And now there are real consequences. We have seen the financial of the legal consequences, tying up our courts with NonStop litigation and big, huge payouts to avoid paying lawyers. Even more, this is where we are, and what's being done.

I'm not anymore. I used to be shocked when the President called a female reporter piggy. Not any more. This is this is this just Tuesday? Maybe this is just what we do now in this s Gudrmy.

Speaker 3: And look, we still haven't heard anything officially from Rending car. This is all being reported but by several reputable news organizations that this is set to happen later today. But look, with all of this hanging in the balance, Jimmy Kimmel's back on the air again tonight, so we shall see what he decides to do with this growing controversy, because let's just be honest, this helps his ratings as well. His ratings improve. The base is engaged on the right, and frankly, the base is engaged on the left. So they may all be thinking everybody wins, except for the human element of it all. I think we all lose. But we see where it's coming from. I'm just afraid to know where it's going.
