Stolen Manolos, Hottie Detectives, and a Charlotte Makeout! (S3 E17 "What Goes Around Comes Around")

Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Kristen Davis, and I want to know are you a Charlotte? Hi? Everybody, welcome to are You a Charlotte? We are looking at season three, episode seventeen, so it's three seventeen. What Goes Around Comes Around? Air date October eighth, two thousand. This is a great, great episode and I have many things to confess about it. One is that I always thought that the episode where Carrie loses Aiden's dog and goes through running through the village, I thought that was called What Goes Around Comes Around? But no, in fact I was wrong. This episode is called what Goes Around Comes Around and is equally as good. I have to say, maybe not quite as good. It might not unseat that episode is my all time favorite, but it's a very very good episode. It was written by Darren Starr, directed by Alan Colter. This is the episode where Carrie is held up at gunpoint in Soho basically looking for West Broadway, which is really funny and a little bit weird, and she loses her baguette and her Manolo Blonnis and her ring in her watch and then a very handsome detective comes and then Miranda ends up dating him Meanwhile, Samantha ends up having a little dalliance with someone named Sam Jones, which is also very interesting. And then also Charlotte is in Connecticut with the mcdougles. Now, honestly, I remembered almost none of this, so it was really really interesting for me to watch it. I don't know if we're just so tired by this point in the season that I can't remember anything, but it was like watching the whole thing for the first time and very highly enjoyable. And I did laugh out loud a few times, so that was really fun. So it starts with all of us out to lunch at an actual restaurant, not the coffee shop, and I am wearing a purple dulcha and gabana dress and my nails are painted purple. And this is what I do remember this season. This episode, Sarah, Jeska and I were on the corner. I don't know if we were trying to get to the restaurant. We were like out in the world on a corner, hiding kind of behind a pole for some reason, maybe from paparazzi, I have no idea. She looks down at my nails and she says, your nails are purple, and you know, I am a Southern girl at heart, right, So I thought, like I'm wearing this purple dress, I should paint my nails to match. So I painted my nails kind of a grape color, which you see me waving my hands around at the coffee shop. You know, questionable, definitely questionable, I would say, but whatever, that's what I did. I also remember being in Connecticut. I think we were in Connecticut filming this stuff with the mcdougalls, and Kyle had his little dog with them, and you know how I love little dogs, so I remember that. But I also did not remember the storyline at all for Charlot, which we'll get to where I literally kiss a gardener, which I thought had been a dream. I did not remember that I actually did this in the storyline of the show. It's all very interesting and slightly sad, but we'll get to that in a second. So we're all at lunch at an actual restaurant and Natasha walks in with a very beautiful friend and glares at Carrie with a very like seething, seething glare, and Carrie's very like thrown off and feels like she feels very guilty that someone would hate her this much in New York, which you know, is kind of sweet in a way, but it does make sense that Bigg's wife would not be a particular fan of Carrie's. So then after lunch, Carrie's all still so thrown off that she's south of Houston and she gets robbed looking for West Broadway, which is kind of funny and much more like something that would happen to Kristen than what happen to Carrie. So they take her shoes and the guy knows that they're called Manolo blind, which is kind of hysterical. And she's barefoot, and she's very, very concerned about her feet and that she's going to get trickonosis. That the word trickonosis, I think, And later Miranda says to her, no, you'll only get that from pork, which I thought was a pretty funny man in a moment I think made me laugh out loud. But she's very concerned about running down the street, and she runs into a nail salon, I believe, which is why then she has on these slippers. She calls the detective. I think it's a nail salon, and she has like nail salon, slippers on, and then she calls Miranda also and it's all very charming and funny. So when they the detective comes Detective Stevens is his name. He's this very handsome detective. He's very professional, and Miranda comes in and he immediately like kind of you know, makes googly eyes at Miranda and says something about how she has to help him read the Miranda rights to the robber if he catches them, which is pretty funny. And then Carrie. They're just fully ignoring Carrie. So Carrie does the sort of things like standing on her tippy toe to try to get their attention because she's not wearing her heels, which I thought was so charming and such a Sara Jessica thing to do, Very very charming. But back to the Carry storyline, because this is actually really interesting and kind of the thing that I think is interesting about the storyline is that she's somewhat passive in this particular storyline. It's not Carrie out there doing things. She's definitely thinking about things. She's thinking about Karma. The big questions that she has when she's writing are about Karma and is Karma out to get her because of her affair with Big, which I think is a really valid question. I don't think that karma really works in that immediate of a way, but I do think it's a valid thing to be asking yourself when you have done something that isn't necessarily good to other people. Right, So she is questioning these things, but also she's slightly passive in terms of like, she's at this restaurant having lunch with us, Natasha walks in, which then kind of like spurs her to be thinking about this. Then she's walking dow the street, she gets robbed, which spurs her to think about, am I getting robbed because I have bad karma? Then Samantha's storyline, she gets pulled into Samantha's storyline. It's interesting and that she's not really driving her storyline, but towards the end of the show she does drive her storyline and that she pursues Samantha Sorry. She pursues Natasha to be able to apologize to her, which I think is fantastic and has been a long time coming. And I had totally forgotten about all of this, so it was really interesting for me to watch. So she's the Samantha storyline is also really funny and interesting. She's in her apartment and she starts getting all these calls from these guys about how they're all going to be coming to her party, and she doesn't know what party they're talking about. So eventually she questions one and he gives her the address and it's near Washington Square Park, so she thinks, oh, they're very rich. Whoever's having this party, This Sam Jones that is having this party is very rich. No, it turns out they live in an NYA dorm which is hysterically I don't remember any of it. And this incredible actor named Jacob Pitts plays Sam Jones and apparently he was twenty one when he filmed this. We need to find this guy, Jacob Pitts or anyone who knows him. We need to find him to be on the podcast. He's really funny. He's got a Southern accent. I don't know why. It's not part of the part of the character, but he's got a Southern accent. And he's supposed to be playing like a really young kid who's a virgin who's going to n YU. And Sam and Carrie are Samantha Jones and Carrie walk into this like basically frat type party at NYU, which is fully embarrassing, and Carrie says to her like, you can't tell anyone that we did this, which you know, she has the right the right attitude about it all. And at one point then Samantha says something like somehow they figure out that this guy's a virgin, which is also funny. And then Samantha says to Carrie, you know, maybe I should should, you know, give him a good first experience. It's the good first experience that I never had, which is kind of adorable. And then Carrie says, well, that would be statutory rape because the character is supposed to be seventeen. So it's all very very interesting but also kind of I mean, you could see both sides of it, right, because this guy ends up pursuing our Samantha, right like, she walks away, which I think is the right thing to do, and then he pursues her and they eventually, you know, she gives him the first experience that she never had, and it's very humorously shot. I mean, Alan Coulter is so clever and creative, and this guy is so funny as the other Sam Jones like I mean, it's pretty clever. It's obviously like the best thing that ever happened to him, and it's very athletic and like crazy looking in a good way. And then he tells her at the end of it that he's in love with her, and then she says bye bye and makes him leave, and then he he just trips all the way out. And this is in the olden days where you have to leave voicemail and you can't text someone. So he leaves her like thirty five voicemails about how he's obsessed with her and he can't live without her, and she's got to call him. It's really important. It's so sad. You know, we've all been there, I guess. But then he shows up at her door screaming, I love you, Sam Jones, which is also his name, which is pretty funny. Back to Carrie for a second. So we're with Carrie. She is, you know, mulling over her karma and what bad karma she has created by cheating with Big when he's married to Natasha. I mean, you know, I think that's I think that's a question you should ask yourself if you are having an affair with a married person. Because it's obviously not a good idea to be doing that, but you know, stuff happens. People are complicated. I get it. So she's you know, down there, down there, and so she gets robbed. She calls the detective. He's adorable. He arrives. Then they go to the party. She tells Samantha says, I have a piece of information about Big and Natasha, which is kind of insane that Samantha has not told her this, but he she knows. Samantha lets carry know that Big left Natasha. Sorry, Natasha left Big, and that she's back working at Ralph Lauren. And then Carrie looks really sad and feels like she is responsible for breaking up the marriage, and Samantha says, no, you're not, because it probably would have happened anyway, which I also kind of think Samantha's right. So then they leave the dorm party and a guy, these young guys are running down the stairway and they bump into Carrie and she falls down the stairs, and she thinks it's karma, because remember when Natasha finds her in their apartment and Natasha falls down the stairs and breaks her tooth. So then it makes Carrie decide that she's going to find Natasha and apologize to her. So she calls her OFLF Lauren, and the receptionist says she's in a meeting, and Carrie says, I'll hold and then the reception says, you're going to hold forever, and then Carrie goes, well, I guess I'll hold forever, which is kind of funny, and then she very cannivingly finds out where Natasha is having lunch and she shows up, and she shows up in the door newspaper dress, which is of course incredible and incredible dress worn to an incredible scene. And I think Molly and I talked about this that they knew, like in the costume department they would know, oh, we have this scene coming up in this season. We've got to have something amazing to wear to it, so they would kind of like hold things out for that. Now. I've had a lengthy texting chain today with Molly about this der newspaper dress because it was unclear if there was one Deer newspaper dress or two, because Carrie wears it in this season season three, and then she also wears it again in the second movie. So we were trying to figure out is it the exact same dress or is it slightly different because when we see it in the season three episode, you can't see John Galliano's face as clearly on the skirt as you can see it in the film. And then Jenna Ortega wore the dress to one of her film premieres last summer, which we discussed when we were on the press tour for and just like that, and you can very clearly see John Galliano. So we were not sure if maybe there was more than one dress, and if there was more than one dress, did we return it to Dior and then we had to get a second one for the film, or was it in Sir Jessica's warehouse or what. So we're still not one hundred percent sure, But what Mollie tells me is that it is in fact one dress and that she got it from this collector who still has it in Manhattan. And you can go on first DIBs. If you happen to have two hundred and forty five thousand dollars that she would like to buy the newspaper dress with, you could have it. I don't know who would have that amount of money to buy a dress with, but if you did, you could do that, and that is actually who Molly got the dress from. She believes both times. So I'm waiting to hear back from Sara Jessica because maybe they're too But we think now that there's only one, which I think means that it was just the sample and that it wasn't made in terms of sometimes designers will have a sample that they'll make for the fashion show, but they won't make it for the stores. You know, they won't make a whole bunch of them in different sizes for the stores. So that's pretty interesting, I think. Anyway, they have this incredible scene where Carrie comes to apologize to Natasha, and it's really good what she says to her. She basically goes Carrie goes through a long list of all of the things that she's sorry for, cheating on, big, ruining their marriage, all of the things, and then Natasha has a long list back that she says that she's sorry for. I didn't remember any of this, and it really still kind of strikes me as odd, and I'm not sure if it's it just strikes me as odd that she has this long list and in it she says, I'm very sorry that after much painful dental surgery, this tooth is still a different color than this tooth, and she says, I'm sorry you felt the need to come down here. Now. Not only have you ruined my marriage, you've ruined my lunch. I guess that's just what I had to say. It's also sad, So it made me very happy that we have Natasha come back in a jest like that, because it just seems like a really sad way to end with Natasha, because apparently we never see her again, which I think is pretty tragic, and I would have loved to have more Natasha. Then Carrie realizes that this chain of events has put Natasha on the singles market again, which she seems also sad about. And then she realizes at the very end of the show when she is walking down the street and possibly the most beautiful shot ever on our entire show, done by Alan Coulter, of her walking down the street on a long lens with the cars in front of her in the door dress and the wind is just blowing her hair back and the most perfect way ever, and she's thinking about how out there somewhere Big is alone again, and you just feel kind of like a pit in your stomach at the end of that show. At least that's what I felt, because of course it's not over, and I it's like sad because on the one hand, you feel like there's so much more for Carrie, but then on the other hand, she's kind of locked in this thing. You know. It's interesting, it's interesting to rewatch because I have all kinds of feelings obviously when I'm watching this, But I also feel like we didn't even know how good that show was when we were filming it. That's what I think. Like I remember at the time people would be really into it, but like when you're on something that's kind of a hit, you feel like, you know, it's core. People are into it, it's fun, it's enjoyable. But when I watch it back, it's like really good. I mean, I'm just like kind of amazed sometimes, like it's incredible, and you know, our writing is so good, and our directing is so good, and the way they filmed us is so good. It's like, who we really had it like going on and we're just so lucky. We're just so incredibly lucky. Okay, now we go to Charlotte Charlotte's storyline, which Charlotte is really really not so lucky. That's my main thing that I came away from. I don't really remember any of this, you guys know because you've been listening. When Kyle came on, he talks about the scene kind of the most interesting scene that we have in this episode where he's playing tennis and the makeup artist covered in baby oil, which is quite a scene, but also like so sad, so incredibly sad to watch. Bra had forgotten about everything leading up to this. So basically, we're in Connecticut with the mcdougalls, who are a very sad, sad bunch, really sad sad bunch, and we're up there and they're all in their preppy, preppy lives, and we hear from Carrie over the voiceover that Trey has given up and that he's not even really trying to improve our sex life, which is really sad. And they're all sitting around having their cocktail hour, which apparently goes from five until the last persons standing, Carrie tells us in this voiceover, which is also really sad. And then Charlotte sees this handsome, handsome gardener, which I thought was all a dream, but apparently no. She goes, she sees this gardener, She flirts with the gardener, She kisses the gardener, who literally is like the best gardener you might have ever seen in your entire life. He makes up with the gardener, and her sister in law sees her and tells the whole family, and no one looks that upset, and Bunny says, now you're really a McDougall, which if that doesn't send chills down your spine, I don't know what is. So then Charlotte has kind of an important scene with Trey at the tennis court where she basically says, you know, I'm really sorry I kissed the gardener, and he goes, well, you know, we're together and these things are going to happen, which is really sad. Charlotte looks really sad, and then she says, when we get back to the city, I think we should separate for a while, and he says, alrighty, And then you see me in some poker dot pants that I think I still own, coming back to her old apartment because I only sublet it. So that was smart on Charlotte's part, But the rest of it is really tragic, and the fact that she's not just crying hysterically I don't understand. Let's just say that this is one of those times where I'm thinking, did I really do that storyline? Well, I'm not sure, but I guess because no one else is feeling anything, it's hard for Charlotte to have her feelings. I don't really know, but I need to happen. See what happens next week, because now I'm now I'm confused. Now I'm a little confused about Charlotte and Trey because I know it's not over over, but anyway, really interesting, all right, So then Miranda's storyline is really, really enjoyable. She ends up dating the incredibly cute Detective Stevens, but she thinks right away from when she meets him that he is out of her league, she says, so when he comes over to pick her up, it's very clear that he just really really likes her, right, but her own insecurity is getting the way, which is so sad and so relatable. So he comes to pick her up and she is in her bedroom trying to change her clothes and calls Carrie, saying that she's been in her bedroom for twenty minutes trying to change her clothes because she doesn't know what to wear because he's way out of her league, and then he's going to think she's crazy. So she ends up drinking a lot to try to help her own insecurities, which is kind of sad to watch, and he's just really nice to her. They kiss passionately after their first date and he says he'll call her and he leaves. Then they go out again, and this is interesting. So they're at the restaurant, he's just fully focused on her, talking to her very sweetly, and she's looking around the room and thinking that every single woman is looking at him because he's so handsome. And then the waitress shows up and kind of inappropriately flirts with him, doesn't really even look at Miranda, which you know, I've been through that. It's weird. And then they end up going back to her apartment and she's very drunk. What you don't see is the storyline that they had planned, which was that she was going to be so incredibly drunk that while having sex with the cute detective, she was going to be kind of on top of him, straddling him, and she was going to throw up all over him, which they filmed, and I remember a lot of discussion about the filming and that they had this whole rig with the chunky Campbell's soup and that it was pretty disgusting. And then they decide when they watch it that is just too much, that they can't do this to Miranda, and so they change it and they have her doing this really funny thing that's now a very meme, very popular meme, where she's walking down the hall, her hair is all crazy, she's really hungover, and she makes it down the hall to her side table by the door, and there's a note from the detective saying that she should go to AA, which is sad, but you know, also very very relatable, and I guess it's good that they didn't show her throwing up on him. I mean, it's also kind of funny. I don't know. I feel like I have an image of it in my mind, but I don't know where that image came from. I don't know if it was just because I heard it described so much by everybody, or if it just was like so clearly described on the page in the writing that I have a clear image in my mind, or maybe I saw the dailies. I'm not sure, but I have it living in my mind, but it's not in the finished episode, that's for sure. And it's funny, really funny to think about it and talk about it and hear Tim's memories of it, so I thank him for that so that I don't feel like I'm totally insane that I remember that. Anyway, I think everyone has really good storylines in this episode. I really enjoyed watching it. I don't remember hardly any of it, so it was really like a a very fresh, fresh episode from you to watch, and it made me happy that it was so good.
