Serena Williams Makes Major Announcement; Credits GLP-1s For Her Comeback

44-year-old tennis legend Serena Williams is getting back on the grass! Williams announced today she will be returning to tennis one week from today on June 8th at the HSBC Championships in London, considered a warm up to Wimbledon. She will be playing doubles with partner 19-year-old Victoria Mboko from Canada. Williams credits GLP-1 weight loss drugs for allowing her comeback, saying losing the weight, eased the joint pain that forced her to stop playing competitively four years ago.

Speaker 1: Hey, the folks, it is Monday, June first, and I don't know a whole lot about GLP ones, for they right now my favorite drug out there on the market, because from what I'm told, it made it possible for one of my favorite athletes of all time to come out of retirement. And with that, welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. Serena's back. Serena is back, and she in large part credits these drugs.

00:00:33
Speaker 2: She does. She and this is amazing news. By the way, Serena is forty four years old. She has an eight year old and a two year old, and she is serving because this is so inspirational for women everywhere, because, yeah, especially when it comes to athletic endeavors, most women are considered too old to compete once you get into your thirties and forties. She's forty four and look, obviously she's the goat.

00:01:01
Speaker 1: I mean, rom's come on you the things you mentioned, motherhood, business, right, Uh, she's a wife, right, all these things you mentioned that are supposed to get in the way of being.

00:01:13
Speaker 3: Excellent, correct, right, distracting.

00:01:16
Speaker 1: Your profession robes. I love you, obviously, Serena is one of those in my Lifetime who was must see TV. It doesn't matter who she's playing. If I hear she's playing, I'm going to stop what I'm doing and watch ropes. Just as let's just go from the sports saying perspective for a moment from me. This is wonderful news.

00:01:37
Speaker 3: And it's so cool.

00:01:38
Speaker 2: We're sitting here watching the French Open, and we've been watching the French Open, and so it's just fun as tennis is playing throughout our home to get this news. And by the way, this is happening almost immediately, and we'll get into the whole GLP one thing because it is fascinating why she says she's able to come back.

00:01:57
Speaker 3: Next week June eighth, she is.

00:02:00
Speaker 2: Going to be at the HSBC Championships at Queen's Club. She's playing on grass, something she loves. She was invited on a doubles wild card and her partner, I don't you know, I don't know a lot about tennis, but Canada's Victoria Momboco.

00:02:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not familiar with it. That's called nineteen.

00:02:19
Speaker 2: She said she grew up idolizing. Of course she obviously idolizing Serena William So it's reel for her to be playing now side by side.

00:02:28
Speaker 1: That that's unbelievable. And this tournament, like where does this come from? This is not just some little side show. This is I didn't realize. I wasn't familiar with it. It was a it's a prestigious tournament in London. Actually that is a precursor to Wimbledon.

00:02:43
Speaker 2: It's called the warm up to Wimbledon. So yes, that is the next question. Will she be entering more of these competitions on wild card?

00:02:53
Speaker 3: Like who knows how it all works out.

00:02:54
Speaker 2: But I actually went back to revisit just the power of Serena and what she's accomplished already. By the way, she has not competed in four years. She retired, or say I should say she stepped away in twenty twenty two to have another baby, which she did, and she described joint pain. She said it was joint pain that really stopped her from competing at the level she was at. And we're talking about a woman who had twenty three major titles, seventy three career singles titles, four Olympic gold medals, fourteen major doubles with her sister, and she's the only player to record a career Golden Slam in both singles and doubles. So yes, this is exciting that she's coming back.

00:03:37
Speaker 1: Because she's the greatest to ever pick up a tennis rack. Correct, don't talk to me about Novak Djokovic. I know he has twenty He's sitting on twenty four right now.

00:03:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, she needs one more to tie hand.

00:03:47
Speaker 1: And what's the lady's name? I keep Margaret who has twenty four as well, but she didn't do it in the open era.

00:03:53
Speaker 3: Correct.

00:03:54
Speaker 1: Serena Williams is the greatest to ever pick up a tennis racket, and she's about to do again next week.

00:04:02
Speaker 3: Next week, and that's so cool. So yes, she says.

00:04:05
Speaker 2: It's gop ones and you've seen her all over the TV.

00:04:10
Speaker 3: She is paid.

00:04:12
Speaker 2: I guess she's sponsored by Roe for the weight loss that she says. The side effect, other than just looking great and feeling great, was that it completely eased her joint pain. That pain she was talking about, that pain that she said has prevented her from competing at the level she wants to compete at. She said, losing the weight, the joint paint went away.

00:04:32
Speaker 1: That was just a matter of just carrying that weight. Look she was never considered a I mean on the tour, but t no, Right.

00:04:38
Speaker 3: She's got powerhouse.

00:04:40
Speaker 1: She's a powerhouse, a strong woman, She's stick and everybody knows that. That's fine. She's already always competed like that. To stop competing to have two babies.

00:04:50
Speaker 3: Right, that's incredible.

00:04:51
Speaker 2: To think that she is now in literally one week from today, going to be back on the court.

00:04:57
Speaker 3: That is remarkable.

00:04:57
Speaker 2: We should mention her hubby, Alexis Ohaney, and he is a Row investor.

00:05:01
Speaker 3: He's on the board of Row.

00:05:03
Speaker 2: So obviously it's good for her family business so to speak. To give credit to the GLP ones, to Row, specifically for the weight loss that is, the joint paint that allowed her to come back. This is all a real win win for GLP ones and for Row for sure, and for Serena.

00:05:22
Speaker 1: Fine, I'm not suggesting, I hope nobody is that the family really needs to work.

00:05:29
Speaker 3: They're they're doing well.

00:05:30
Speaker 1: Yes, they're doing I get that, and that's fine and that is worth noting. But yes, Robes, it is worth noting. It's worse and okay to pay attention to what if she on this biggest stage is able to show able to display able to credit. Yes, she's not saying directly right, we're not making that argument that it put her in some better shape or she has some advantage. But row it helped her get the weight off. That makes it now possible. What else can people look at that and say, Wow, I can do this thing. If I just was able to do this thing get the weight off, this is going to be a huge advertisement.

00:06:09
Speaker 2: Extra weight causes, yes, all sorts of issues, including joint pain. So yes, that's pretty cool. Now we should mention you. You kind of treaded along this area. I didn't realize. But the World Anti Doping Agency is actually monitoring This is according to the New York Times the Athletic. They said, right now that agency is monitoring whether GLP ones could be, should be will eventually be classified as performance enhancing. They haven't determined that yet, but it is something they are looking at right now.

00:06:39
Speaker 1: Because it's new. We just don't know. We don't know at this point, so it's being monitored. But at this point it doesn't seem I haven't seen anywhere. And a suggestion that it no enhances your performance, but what if it gives you a leg up? Because I am able to lose weight at a clip that you aren't, but hey, these are available to YouTube.

00:07:01
Speaker 2: Yes, I mean yes, and this is really it just comes down to being more physically fit. So yeah, you know, it seems like right now, obviously it's perfectly fine to do this. And you know what, we can't not point out how fun and how cool and how awesome that Nike ed was that Serena used to make her announcement on X. It was so clever, it was I loved this out. If you haven't seen it, go on to X Serena's account, she puts the ad up there. But basically it just has good news travels fast. She's trying to play tennis and you can hear her phone, which is over on the side of the court.

00:07:39
Speaker 3: Bing bing being with messages and it starts ringing and ringing and ringing. Well done, and she just says, I gotta change my number.

00:07:47
Speaker 2: But it's cute. Good news travels fast. It was ready to go right after the announcement was made. It already has two point one million views as of this recording, and it just got put up a few hours ago.

00:07:57
Speaker 1: Nike knows what they're doing on the with icons and he's havingments. They nailed this pretty much every time.

00:08:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, they were ready to go.

00:08:04
Speaker 2: They knew about this surprise announcement that all of us were shocked and excited about to read. But you know what's so cool, This is the latest in a series of female athletes who we love to root for, who are moms who are at least in their forties and beyond coming back to the sports they love. Will tell you why Serena might just be the latest and hopefully there'll be more to come. Women, it's not over when you turn forty. Welcome back everybody to this exciting edition of Amy and TJ where we just got to hear, or watch and see all the different ways Serena Williams let the world know she's coming back, and it's happening exactly one week from today.

00:08:55
Speaker 3: You'll be watching.

00:08:56
Speaker 1: Without a doubt, it doesn't matter where you stop everything to see her play. And I'm kind of excited to see her play with this nineteen year old kid. That's kind of cool just to see that that's history as well. I mean, how many when did Serena win her first Grand Slam. This kid might not even even been born, but.

00:09:13
Speaker 3: That's entirely possible, So.

00:09:15
Speaker 1: That part's cool, But this is who could you name at this point who's in there for who could come out of her town? I don't know, d Wade, not necessarily the same thing I was in basketball. You know who I'm talking about doing any wait, sorry about that, Tom Brady, Let's go. She's kind of iconic, and he's probably at an age still in shape. This would be cool to see him. That's the only thing I can think you saying bolts, but older guys aren't known as being the faster sprinters. I'm trying to think of what icon could do this and she's been removed from the game for four years. September right, twenty two years. Kids match two kids? Four years.

00:09:53
Speaker 2: That does a number on your body, and that is you aren't the same.

00:09:57
Speaker 3: That is just the truth. You are not the same after the first one, maybe the second one. No way, any argument.

00:10:04
Speaker 1: Can you be better?

00:10:06
Speaker 3: You could play with more heart, you could play with more passion.

00:10:08
Speaker 2: Maybe you could be playing for something different which would create more of a I don't know, a force behind what you're doing.

00:10:16
Speaker 1: Well, there's no argument that after you have two kids, you are physically superior to what you were before you had those kids.

00:10:21
Speaker 3: You're not you're physically inferior. You said superior, So there's no argument.

00:10:27
Speaker 2: Oh oh no, no, no, no, yes, you know what.

00:10:32
Speaker 3: I would love it if it were true.

00:10:33
Speaker 2: But I just I can speak from personal experience, and I'm a fairly like not competitively, but I am an athletic person, and it was harder, especially after the second one.

00:10:44
Speaker 3: So it's it's just.

00:10:46
Speaker 2: Really inspirational to see what you can do if you put your mind to it.

00:10:49
Speaker 3: And she joins this year, Alison Felix.

00:10:53
Speaker 2: We were shouting this from the rootop too, because we love this woman. She's forty years old. She's just announced that she's to make a comeback to competitive track and field at forty. She wants to qualify for the twenty twenty eight Olympic Games in her hometown of la and if she makes the team, she will be forty two years old.

00:11:13
Speaker 3: How about that?

00:11:14
Speaker 1: Yeah, sprinters don't sprint.

00:11:16
Speaker 2: You were just mentioning Usain Bold. So I was thinking, Alison Felix is giving it a go.

00:11:21
Speaker 1: And I can't remember what they said she would be I no, no, she would be the oldest to make the team. They just don't have sprinters this all. It just does not happen.

00:11:28
Speaker 3: Because you're just not as fast.

00:11:31
Speaker 1: But it's cool to see her going for it. Now. The folks we're talking about making comebacks are all time greats, so they were already a little ahead of the pack, So even if they lost a step or two, they're probably maybe still a step or two above the average player these days.

00:11:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, and she's got kids about the same age as Serena. She's got a daughter that was born in twenty eighteen, so that would make her almost eight.

00:11:55
Speaker 3: I think she's seven, almost eight.

00:11:56
Speaker 2: And then she has a little guy born on April tenth, twenty twenty four, so he's just two. So literally she and Serena have almost kids almost exactly the same ages.

00:12:08
Speaker 3: That is so cool to see and to hear.

00:12:10
Speaker 2: And then look, I should mention Lindsay Vonn because I know it didn't end well, but this is a woman who in her forties said I'm coming back at forty one. She got that knee replacement. In fact, I saw an article comparing Serena Williams taking the GLP ones allowing her to be competitive with no more joint pain. To Lindsay Vaughn getting a knee replacement surgery, like these are things you do that allow you to overcome or have something that just age and just wear and tear sometimes takes on the body. So obviously we know that ended in a horrific, devastating crash where she actually shattered her knee and has compartment syndrome. And still she's talking about after she has what a year long at least recovery, she's still saying she is considering coming back even after that.

00:13:02
Speaker 1: And Serena would never commit fully to being done with the sport. She's had a chance over the years to shut this down. She never would.

00:13:12
Speaker 2: You know what's funny, And you know, just recently, like the last six months ago, the rumor started because she actually had to what do you have to do? Everyone saw her name in the doping pool six months ago and I think she did an interview with the Today show she had and she was just cutely sidestepping it, and even one time on Act she said, y'all, come on, don't take this seriously.

00:13:38
Speaker 1: They know see that's okay. I got no problem with that. But we've been reading these te leaves. So she had to give us a heads up with this anti doping pool. You are required by the Tennis Association. You have to submit your name, which means you are putting yourself in the pool for drug testing, which means they can show up to your house at any point they want to in that time and take a drug test. So to put yourself into that stress of no matter where you are in the world, you can come drug test. To me, you don't do that unless you're serious about possibly playing again. So we've been seeing the signs and she could have shut this down and this, Wow, Robes. She was just a Super Bowl halftime performer a year ago.

00:14:23
Speaker 3: Right exactly.

00:14:24
Speaker 2: Look at how how far she's going now, So that I mean, this is fun. This is exciting, and I love that she waited until the last minute. It actually makes it so fun, like, oh my god, in exactly one week from today, we're gonna see her play.

00:14:36
Speaker 3: We don't have to wait for it. It's top of mind.

00:14:38
Speaker 1: It's smart because it's not some weeks and weeks or a month plus of build up and she has to keep answering questions like wait, wait she's coming back, Oh hell, she's playing tomorrow. It's I love how this played out robes. What does this do? What if she comes back? And how big of an advertisement for for these drugs here and there be?

00:14:58
Speaker 2: This is huge because look, obviously women, these GLP ones are sweeping through Hollywood, and some people have complained about just how thin some stars are getting, that women who shouldn't be on these are on them to be like uber thin. So obviously people can take things too far. But to see this give women, especially athletic women, an opportunity to be, you know, to be not maybe as great as they were, but good enough to be at a level. I just think about it for anybody after having after giving birth, after just having years, to be able to shed some pounds, to get that extra boost, to be able to whatever it is you do, play tennis or you know, run races or climb mountains, but just to give you that edge. This is the best kind of advertising. You can't even buy this kind of advertising. It's so good.

00:15:50
Speaker 1: We will be watching, We absolutely will be watching. Congratulations to Serena. This is just cool. And no matter what or this is, I guess, I guess a good step ropes. I hear so much about gop one's and it's how people want to look how they want to appear. And that's fine, and that's about health to a certain degree. I am hearing about a GOP one now that is helping a woman continue something she loves. It's not just about vanity, and it's okay. And I think you're healthier the less weight you have.

00:16:22
Speaker 3: Of course, sure for.

00:16:23
Speaker 1: Robes, this is like one of the first high profile stories I've seen to where I'm rooting for a GOP one because it literally relieved and made possible for an elite athlete to get back on the court. Oh, that's kind of cool to I never thought about it like that.

00:16:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, I can already see the ads now. They're probably ready to go.

00:16:45
Speaker 1: They have them. You want to make your comeback?

00:16:47
Speaker 4: Join row now, it writes itself, It writes itself. All right, everybody, I'm sure you'll be rooting Serena on along with us next week.

00:16:57
Speaker 2: But until then, thank you so much for listening to us. I made robot alongside TJ.

00:17:02
Speaker 3: Holmes. We will talk to you soon.

00:17:04
Speaker 4: M
