Our Oscars Recap: The Good, The Bad, The Awkward, The Shutout, and the No-Show

It took 3hrs and 40mins to get to the end of what was a night of historic, surprising, touching, funny, and awkward moments. There was even a tie last night. The highlights for Amy and T.J.: Michael B's win, an incredible In Memoriam segment that included Barbara Streisand, a "Golden" performance, and a winner's no-show.

Speaker 1: Yes it was a three hour I think rough forty two minutes something like that. But yes, this sucker went long. Did it feel like it to you?

Speaker 2: And look, we were talking about how long so many of these best picture movies were. They managed to be longer than any of the longest movies that we actually had to labor through, if you think about it in that way.

Speaker 1: So I guess it makes sense that the show honoring really long movies would be a really long show. Yep. But yes, they started at seven, so with the idea that all we're going to end up all being in bed a little early but still they went until ten forty five. Some of this had to do with Rose. Last night was a promotional night. Everybody was getting it in and part of it was Bachelorette. I guess a part of the schedule they were squeezing in. But it was a very promo field night.

Speaker 1: Oh my god, there's so many devil Ware's, Prada is coming out, the Grogu movie is coming out, Bachelorette is coming out. What else was promoted?

Speaker 1: So let's get through what actually happened at the We're gonna get through each of these things. But these were some of the highlights. There was a Bridesmaid's reunion on stage everybody loved but then didn't. The end memoriam was special. Last night, Misty Copeland did her thing. People were getting played off rather rudely during some of their speeches. Diane Warren lost again. We had a tie last night. Lionel Ritchie is taking Black Don't Crack to a whole new level. Michael B. Jordan, Congratulations. Wasn't a lot of politics in the ceremony last night. We never heard Trump's name mentioned once, even though Trump definitely was mentioned. And the Oscars finally had some fun when an animated Movies song finally played. Was that not the Yes, the most fun of the night. Yes.

Speaker 1: It woke up the audience, did it not? They had the little Life It's so whatnot in their hand. That was a cool moment. But yes, we started three hours and forty minutes. What do you do they? This is always an issue and a question every year how long does this show need to be robes?

Speaker 2: They have too many awards, That's just what it boils down to. We're there for like four or five of them and then all the ones in between. Not to take away from any of the phenomenal work that goes on behind the scenes, but there are just way too many awards and it just drags the showdown.

Speaker 1: That's the point. They say they want to recognize more. They want more to get that national attention, to be a part of the broadcast. That I can certainly respect. I don't know how you shorten the show of it. It's every single year. You and I've covered this for a long time, and every single year it's the same thing.

Speaker 1: So it went three hours and forty minutes. The highlights, at least of the awards have to do with the movies that want So here's your list, movies by wins and robes. This kind of is right, but kind of some surprises.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I will say there wasn't one movie that took off and swept everything. It was fairly spread out, so one battle after another. Obviously one Best Picture, which was The Big Big Fish, but they took home six Oscars, and Sinners took home four, and.

Speaker 2: Look, we were rooting for them to get Best Picture, but they did get four. That was the second most of any other movie that night. And Frankenstein actually did really well with three oscars, and K Pop Demon Hunters with two really.

Speaker 1: It's amazing after all that K Pop demon Hunters ends up with two wins, which is better than most of the Oscar nominated movies ended up doing. Last night of Note, Marty Supreme talked about a lot. Timothy Chalomay talked about a lot for good reasons and some negative ones here lately, not the night they were hoping.

Speaker 2: For, Not the night they were hoping for because they were shut out, zero wins and some common thrown his way without really saying anything. It was visual.

Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and do this now. I don't think I give Conan a Bryan credit. He mentioned it at the top without being mean. I think Conan and now the Golden Globes Nicki Glazer, yes, have found a way to go after them in a playful joking. Obviously it's jokes, but not mean manner.

Speaker 1: I do believe was a previously planned performance. She was a part of that big cultural African cultural performance for sinners, and she came out in the end and was a part. I think it was planned early. I did see it was announced early before his thing became a big deal. But Rolles, he is Misty Copeland the most famous ballerina. It's the only one, probably most Americans can name.

Speaker 1: Sitting thirty forty feet from Timothy Shallomey, who just said her, her skill, her talent, her art is dying and it's not worth people's time and something we don't care about. Yes, sitting that clothed, that was tough. That was tension, but she didn't look. Nobody pointed and made a big hubbub about it, but you could feel it in the room. And then the movie ends up not winning a damn thing.

Speaker 1: I didn't like that for him, Well you do, but he he said it. He put himself in that position. Conan's joke at the top was that there were threats right to the Oscars and the threat of attack from the ballet and opera community.

Speaker 1: I give him that one. But Conan thoughts on his opening. I thought it started really strong because he started with the theme of a movie a lot of people loved, and remember because of the promotion with the kids, the opening worked.

Speaker 2: It was it was adorable and and yes it was a horror movie that he was taking on. But of course, I think even if you haven't seen the movie Weapons, I would imagine through promos, you've seen the images of the kids with their arms down at a like a like a triangle running. So he he had a gaggle of kids running through all the different areas and then actually it continued live on to the stage, which was really fun.

Speaker 1: I thought it was an excellent opening, taking that movie in particular that was popular, and I thought that was fun. Him dressed as Amy Madigan's character hilarious. Yeah, that was all good. However, his jokes around. You've been looking at more reviews than I have. What's the assessment of Conan's performance last year?

Speaker 1: Conan though, it's difficult because he set the bar himself for last year ropes. I was like, wow, they found it, they got their host. This year, it felt maybe they were trying to be a little safe and I didn't even found it that silly. It just I don't know a lot of it. We'll get into some of the bits, but some of his jokes at the top, he did his name. He didn't mention we said nobody mentioned Trump. But he had a line in which he said, it's great to see all this modesty and genuine humility. It was a nod, not wing. The audience got it and understood.

Speaker 1: It started off with a bang. They always do the best supporting actress first in the broadcast, and I guess they know what they're doing. For some reason, it always delivers a nice moment. This was cool.

Speaker 1: Okay, so that's how the night started. It started with a bang. We continue on, like we said, Look, Kate Pop Demon Hunters. No surprise, they got Best Animated Feature. I think Zystopia two was its only really its strong competition. But when they got up, one of the people accepting the award for Best Animated Features, said so sorry it took so long for someone one that looked like us to be up here speaking to little Korean boys and girls.

Speaker 1: There was some moments like that. But perhaps when they won for Best Song, I know, the guy got played off.

Speaker 2: So the lead singer got to say some beautiful It was very emotional. She was moving and then yes, a uh, I was like a young man came forward to try to say something, and he as soon as he started talking, the music just took off and it was it was embarrassing.

Speaker 1: But then everybody felt how bad it was in the room, and then the music stopped so to allow him to play again. We had several moments that people got played off. It always feels rude. What do you do? Robes, what you do?

I saw a few possible reasons why online he might not have been there last night, among them that he could be in Ukraine. But but I thought Kieran Culkin did a great job.

Okay, So but he was sitting next to Kate Hudson and Sigourney Weaver tried to play this thing off and it just I was like, please make it stop. It was awkward, It was too planned and canned. That's what you can tell when these things are Now, I have to do the bit that the Academy told me I had to do, and it just even amazing actors sometimes can't pull up.

And then Bill Palm and his son were up there that that was very un.

But Anna Wintour, the Miranda Priest League character played by Meryl Streeve is a depiction many say of Anna Wintour, so it was cute to have them together. And of course Anna win Tour played the snooty biace that people think she is.

But Jimmy Kimmel was there also last night the moment, I guess robes the biggest one was Best Actor. I'm not sure who the front runners were, but after Michael B. Jordan won the Screen Actors Gil Award that's essentially the one voted on by actors, a lot of people started paying a lot more attention to Wait a minute, this might be a closer race than he had. He might have a bigger shot than people that give him credit for so far.

Speaker 1: The voting was done, done, Voney's done. It made people feel relieved. Last night. Well wow, I'm glad we didn't give him that oscar. But it was a weird night for Timothy Challamey. It just was. But hey, forget that this was Michael Jordan. They had him sitting in the best seat.

That was the first thing out of his mouth when an oscar was handed to him, and he made a cool, strong speech of historic I mean recognizing the history and those that came before him. Honestly, we both love Princess Bride so much, like it is absolutely one of our favorite movies, and to just hear that music that we love so much play, it was so beautiful to honor Rob Reiner and to have Billy Crystal do it. Buddy, we had some fun storm in the castle. Oh my god, this is gonna make me cry right now.

Speaker 1: It was special and it was appropriate, and Billy Crystal nailed it and he spoke as a guy who's lost a best friend. It was kind of awesome and it wrote literally folks came over to me, stood behind the cow to put our arms wrapped and clutched me and cried as you watch that particular segment. But then Rachel McAdams, I forgot bro We like, not just lost actors, lost Yanne, absolute legends. So it was nice to have Rachel McAdams up.

Speaker 2: There these Oh she did such a beautiful job honoring Diane Keaton and what a beautiful picture they had of Diana there. But you talk about my two favorite movies like Princess Bride and Baby Boom, which they didn't mention. I was upset about, but that's my favorite.

Speaker 1: And this was a long immemorial. I mean, these are getting longer, I believe, but this was If they do it like this every year, love it. Obviously some names left off, Eric Dame McSteamy of course, who've just passed recently. Malcolm Jamal Warner was not in there, and James Vanderbeek. Now those names stand out because they were very much a part of the pop culture in a lot of ways, but they weren't movie stars. They weren't didn't have huge contributions to movies, and so they were left out. People will take issue with that always, but that's just how we've seen it go.

Speaker 2: Yeah, people will say, well, there are more television stars. That's for the Emmys, that's for another award show. But certainly it seemed glaring just given how big of a name each of those men were, and certainly their debts were all very tragic. They all died young, so I think that's probably another reason why people thought they should have been included.

Speaker 1: Piece of history. We have to mention best achievement in cinematography went to a woman for the first time last night. She was a cinematographer on CENTERUS Autumn Durral Archipal. She had a very very cool speech last night, but that's history that should be noted. A woman one for best achievement in cinematographer for the first time ever, and the biggest moment of the night, I have to say Ropes is Lionel Ritchie putting the world on notice. Black does not ever ever crack.

But yes, they started at seven, so with the idea that all we're going to end up all being in bed a little early but still they went until ten forty five. Some of this had to do with Rose. Last night was a promotional night. Everybody was getting it in and part of it was Bachelorette. I guess a part of the schedule they were squeezing in. But it was a very promo field night.

There was a Bridesmaid's reunion on stage everybody loved but then didn't. The end memoriam was special. Last night, Misty Copeland did her thing. People were getting played off rather rudely during some of their speeches. Diane Warren lost again. We had a tie last night. Lionel Ritchie is taking Black Don't Crack to a whole new level. Michael B. Jordan, Congratulations. Wasn't a lot of politics in the ceremony last night. We never heard Trump's name mentioned once, even though Trump definitely was mentioned. And the Oscars finally had some fun when an animated Movies song finally played. Was that not the Yes, the most fun of the night. Yes.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I will say there wasn't one movie that took off and swept everything. It was fairly spread out, so one battle after another. Obviously one Best Picture, which was The Big Big Fish, but they took home six Oscars, and Sinners took home four, and.

Speaker 2: Look, we were rooting for them to get Best Picture, but they did get four. That was the second most of any other movie that night. And Frankenstein actually did really well with three oscars, and K Pop Demon Hunters with two really.

Speaker 1: It's amazing after all that K Pop demon Hunters ends up with two wins, which is better than most of the Oscar nominated movies ended up doing. Last night of Note, Marty Supreme talked about a lot. Timothy Chalomay talked about a lot for good reasons and some negative ones here lately, not the night they were hoping.

And then the movie ends up not winning a damn thing.

But of course, I think even if you haven't seen the movie Weapons, I would imagine through promos, you've seen the images of the kids with their arms down at a like a like a triangle running. So he he had a gaggle of kids running through all the different areas and then actually it continued live on to the stage, which was really fun.

We'll get into some of the bits, but some of his jokes at the top, he did his name. He didn't mention we said nobody mentioned Trump. But he had a line in which he said, it's great to see all this modesty and genuine humility. It was a nod, not wing. The audience got it and understood.

I think Zystopia two was its only really its strong competition. But when they got up, one of the people accepting the award for Best Animated Features, said so sorry it took so long for someone one that looked like us to be up here speaking to little Korean boys and girls.

Now those names stand out because they were very much a part of the pop culture in a lot of ways, but they weren't movie stars. They weren't didn't have huge contributions to movies, and so they were left out. People will take issue with that always, but that's just how we've seen it go.

But certainly it seemed glaring just given how big of a name each of those men were, and certainly their debts were all very tragic.
