Oscar-Winning Actor Accused By Multiple Women Of Sexual Misconduct When They Were Teens

A total of 10 women are publicly accusing actor Jared Leto of sexual misconduct when they were teenagers. The BBC has a new documentary out today called Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret where the women describe several disturbing incidents, including one who claims he had sex with her in California when she was just 17, which is below the age of consent. Leto denies the women’s allegations, saying he has never sexually assaulted anyone in his life.”

Speaker 1: Hey, folks, it is Wednesday, July twenty ninth, and Oscar winning actor Jared Leto has been accused by not one, not two, not three, not four, but ten women of various acts of misconduct, some of them rising to a criminal level, and some of them involve teenagers. Welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ. Ropes. He's had some allegations around him over several years of his career. The BBC has now come out with a documentary and WHOA.

00:00:32
Speaker 2: Yes, these are some very shocking and as you point out, yes, criminal allegations against a very prominent actor who, yes, has had some allegations in the past, but never like this, not this detailed, not by this many women, and they all tell a similar tale.

00:00:51
Speaker 3: There is a similar pattern.

00:00:52
Speaker 2: And yes, most of the women who are now in their thirties or forties were teenagers they say at the time.

00:00:59
Speaker 1: And in particular what we're talking about here, at least Robes, we should speak on the four women have come forward and the allegations that rise to criminal conduct. These four were the ages of nineteen seventeen, seventeen and sixteen. We'll get into that a little more, but Robes, there are ten women in this new documentary, at least nine of them, I believe the BBC says, are telling their stories for the first time. But aside from the criminal stuff they we'll talk to, there are various allegations of different types of inappropriate behavior, but they all seem robes to be kind of in line with a consistent story.

00:01:36
Speaker 2: Yes, and that is when you start to really pay attention, because it's not just an outlier or one woman, or someone filing a civil lawsuit or trying to get money from the actor. A lot of times we'll hear actors defend themselves and say it's a money grab. This does not appear to be the case. They spoke to the BBC. Their documentary is out today correct July twenty ninth, and it's called Jared Leto Hollywood's Dark Secret. Yes, I wanted to get that out because that is their point that, yes, we haven't maybe publicly heard these stories, but there are plenty of women who say this was absolutely a known dark secret among a certain segment of the population there in Hollywood. Yeah.

00:02:20
Speaker 1: I don't know how to describe broke the allegation's previous allegations, but Hollywood's Dark Secret there is this. I don't know Rope's kind of a narrative that this is something that's understood about him that he likes younger. That's not younger women. No, no, no, no, no no. He's fifty four, Okay, as youthful and good looking and pretty as you could even say. He looks with the long hair, he looks like he looks he reads much younger than fifty four. Okay, fine, we're talking seventeen and eighteen and whatnot with his grown man all the allegations Ropes, I think he was between thirty and forty four.

00:02:58
Speaker 3: That's what they say.

00:02:59
Speaker 1: They took.

00:03:00
Speaker 2: Yes, So the age gap was significant when you're talking about a grown man in his thirties and forties going after According to these women, girls who couldn't even drink or vote in a lot of cases and in a couple of cases were not legally able to give their consent. And that is where the potential for a crime, or at least a criminal act in terms of it being a dark secret.

00:03:23
Speaker 3: Did you read this? I thought this was so interesting.

00:03:25
Speaker 2: A year ago, an La DJ posted something on her Facebook that basically said, you're not really in La until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage in a kilt and a snow hat, so almost making light of the fact that he was just this kind of creepy, lecherous type of dude that everyone knew to stay away from because of how he behaved, how he moved.

00:03:47
Speaker 3: As the young folks say, it was.

00:03:50
Speaker 1: Understood that he was a creep. Yeah, is the storyline where again, this guy is not facing a single charge? Am I correct? That faced a single charge? Ours never been convicted of a damn thing at this point. This is an innocent man. These stories robes are always difficult, and how do you balance he is so Yes, if you separate robes, forget rumor and social media and anything else. You have women coming forward and showing their faces talking about what happened to them. That is a real story. And when it involves someone of his stature robes, this is beyond a tabloid headline.

00:04:29
Speaker 2: Absolutely, And the BBC says, and they make it very clear that in this documentary, in order to put this documentary together, they talked about just how well sourced it was that they corroborated these women's stories with emails and texts talking to their friends, their family members. They said that they saw text messages that some of these women kept, some of the creepy exchanges. The sixteen year old in particular, talked about a sexually explicit text that she received and then a subsequent ask for an NDA to be signed to which she never did.

00:05:03
Speaker 1: Okay, let's start with that. We were going to go through each of them. Let's start there with the sixteen year old. Are the is your understanding robes in this story? Did they ever interact? Did they ever were they ever in the same spot, were they ever in the same room, did they ever actually meet? But they talked about phone calls and text messages and emails and explicit stuff that he was sending towards a sixteen year old. But I didn't have a full understanding of if the relationship moved beyond that. But to your point about the NDA, that suggests that he knew he was doing something it shouldn't have been.

00:05:34
Speaker 2: Correct and he knew that when you send those types of exchanges in writing in a text message, they will be verifiable and maybe not. And this is exactly what happened. Maybe she didn't run out and tell the world that year or five years. But maybe when those women, who at the time were girls I'm sorry, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen nineteen, when they get a little older, when they become more mature, maybe when they got to Jared Leto's age, they realized, what the hell.

00:06:02
Speaker 3: Happened to me? That was not okay.

00:06:04
Speaker 2: When you're young and impressionable and naive, you might try to explain it away. But when you get to a certain age and you look back and you reflect, and you recognize how old he was and how young they were, and how wrong that was. Look, she knew not to sign the NDA, and she was able, and she held onto it. She held onto it. She had it to show the BBC. I think that's very interesting. But no, it wasn't clear whether or not anything physical occurred between them. It was the way I read it, the way I understood it, was that he was constantly propositioning her, a sixteen year old, a sixteen year old to come back to his room to have sex with him.

00:06:38
Speaker 1: Okay, And that was the teenager he was allegedly grooming. Another involved an assault involving a woman in a hotel room when she was seventeen years old. This was the run one Robes, I didn't understand how this all came about and how they ended up together. But he invited her over to a hotel, a CD briming motel, Yeah motel, Yeah, how she described it. But they didn't have sex. He kissed her, but she still describes it as certainly sexually inappropriate. And yes, this might have risen to the criminal level as well.

00:07:12
Speaker 3: Uh, that's right. Her name, well, she's now in her forties.

00:07:15
Speaker 2: They went by names, they didn't actually give their real names, but she went by the name Isabelle. That was the woman who's now in her forties, who was seventeen at the time. But she said she pulled away from him and told him she wanted to leave, and so he put on a towel and eventually let her out of the room. But she was wildly uncomfortable as he was kissing her and apparently used her hand to masturbate himself, that is what she says, and.

00:07:41
Speaker 1: That would constitute a sexual assault, absolutely absolutely constitute. So the other seventeen year old and Robes, this one's interesting as well because of where this took place.

00:07:52
Speaker 3: That's right. She went by the name Clara for the documentary.

00:07:55
Speaker 2: But she told the BBC that she had sex with Jared Letto when she was set seventeen years old and he was thirty four, and it happened in California. And I don't know why this detail was so gross to me, but she said it happened while her friend was waiting for her in another room. I guess the point being is it didn't sound like it was something she wanted to do or something she was into. It sounded just really gross and awful and a tough position for a young girl. I mean, he was twice her age at that point, and so yes, in the state of California, that is too young to give consent.

00:08:32
Speaker 1: That would constitute statutory rape. So right there, that allegation rises to a criminal level, period point blank. Rose, I don't know they changed the rules out there. What are the statute of limitations on fifty four? Now? That was twenty years ago? Twenty years ago, So again, do you do we know? I can't think it's how fen.

00:08:55
Speaker 3: I know things changed after me too.

00:08:56
Speaker 2: They certainly changed after Harvey Weinstein had opened up the door for some folks who go after him criminally because of that, And there are some states where there is no statue deliberate limitations for certain crimes.

00:09:08
Speaker 3: This could be among them. We can check that out.

00:09:09
Speaker 2: But I thought one of the creepy, creepy, creepy parts of this is Clara said that when they were having sex, he wanted her to call him daddy and he wanted her to pretend like she was a little girl or my little girl. That speaks to a whole other level, Babe that says that sounds like pedophilia turns him on. That's what that sounds like.

00:09:37
Speaker 1: And where do we go robes with a woman telling her story, telling her truth, and details like that come out about somebody that could just ruin, ruin you and ruin a career, what do you do with an allegation someone's come out and says something this serious about a public figure. This is criminal behavior. Forget if it's a public figure, this is just criminal behavior. We would want that person caught and off the streets. What do you do, robes in talking about this and all the stuff being out and the whole Look, BBC does some good work. This is not just tabloid. This is not just some British tabloids. Now they do some legit work. So let's get that out there. But Robes, this is sourced and resourced reporting.

00:10:21
Speaker 2: It is indeed, and it does sound like because I did look it up, that her story is a cautionary tale, but it won't be able to be criminally prosecuted because in California, yes, right now, there is no criminal statute of limitations for rape. But it had to have happened after January first, twenty seventeen. These specific incidents that the BBC is reporting on they say took place from it was two thousand and two to twenty sixteen, I believe, so literally the next year, if one of these allegations, or if one of these alleged incidents I should say happened the following year, there would be no statute of limitations. But if it happened before twenty seventeen, there is only a six year limit.

00:11:05
Speaker 1: So we're talking sexual assaults that happened after twenty seventeen in California. Now don't have a statue to that. Correct, You can come back and prosecute, correct, in twenty thirty years down the road, wasn't it? It was New York that gave what was it a moratorium like a year or something that you can get them in in this year.

00:11:26
Speaker 2: And that's what happened to Diddy bunch of Yeah, that's what happened.

00:11:29
Speaker 3: To Sean Dinny Combs.

00:11:30
Speaker 2: All of a sudden, women said, Hey, you know what, you lifted it for a year. I'm going to come in and tell you what happened to me twenty years ago, twenty five years ago. And look, I never quite understood that in the sense that if it's illegal now, why not retroactively have it apply to any case?

00:11:48
Speaker 3: Why just do it from a certain period on? Is it just too much?

00:11:52
Speaker 2: Is it too overwhelming the potential of having that many women come forward and tell their stories. I don't know, but that does seem odd that this particular documentary goes from two thousand and two to twenty sixteen and turns out I.

00:12:08
Speaker 3: Don't know if he was aware of that. I mean, that would be really crazy.

00:12:12
Speaker 2: It couldn't have just it must just be coincidence that these alleged incidents happened during a period of time where the statute of limitations is it applies, you.

00:12:21
Speaker 1: Know, and you know, they looked that it is what a weird thing to think she's finally coming forward and finally telling the story and you look at the calendar and say, oh, you missed it by a few months. Kind of a thing. That's that's too bad. But stay here, folks, we did hear from Jared Leto. He did put out a statement in response to these allegations. We will let you hear every single word of it. Also, we will remind you just how big of a deal and how big of a star this dude is.

00:12:56
Speaker 3: Welcome back everyone.

00:12:57
Speaker 2: As we discussed these new allegations, four new women have stepped forward, but a total of ten women spoke to the BBC in their new documentary out now, Jared Leto Hollywood's Dark Secret. Well, as you might imagine, Jared Letto did release a statement to defend himself, and he categorically denies all of these women's accounts of what they say happened to them.

00:13:23
Speaker 3: Here's what he said.

00:13:24
Speaker 2: He said, I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.

00:13:33
Speaker 1: I mean, what more do you say, short, sweet to the point, it's all a lie? I mean, is there more to it to say than that he's saying? All ten of these women are lying. All four of these women are lying. All four of these women who are teenagers, they're lying.

00:13:47
Speaker 2: I mean, what now, Look, and the question is is this just gross? Is this just icky? Now that it appears like it can't be criminally none of these accounts can be criminally prosecuted as long as they took place during that period of time.

00:14:02
Speaker 3: But look, I thought this was really interesting. One of the women said this.

00:14:05
Speaker 2: There is no well adjusted man in his thirties who was going to look at a teenager and think she would be a great partner. I mean, I think at the very least, the takeaway from this is it was inappropriate. It was it's concerning, and certainly if the women had been able to speak up at that time, it would have been criminal. But this is absolutely devastating to him as an actor. This is devastating to his credibility and to his ability to work. I would imagine who would want to hire Jared Leto. I don't care how great of an actor he is with these allegations and this many allegations hanging over his head, regardless of whether or not they constitute a crime, No hire him.

00:14:47
Speaker 1: No matter how good of an actor. He's kind of great. This dude is highly and has been for a long time, really highly regarded and highly regarded. Robes. Yes, he has an eye Oscar. Do you remember him in Dallas Buyers?

00:15:02
Speaker 2: He was unbelievable in that movie. He was, Yes, he was fantastic Dallas Buyer's Club.

00:15:09
Speaker 1: He picked up that Oscar and he has robes. He has had a great career. I think, isn't he a method actor? One of those guys.

00:15:15
Speaker 3: He's one of those guys.

00:15:16
Speaker 1: They're intense robes, They're intense, and he takes his craft so seriously and it comes across in his movies. I don't remember Requiem for a Dream. Apparently that was a major starring role. Got a lot of credit for that. Obviously, I would be into the Suicide Squad where he played the Joker opposite what's the name Harley Quinn? What's the young lady? The actress to play Barbie?

00:15:40
Speaker 3: Oh, now that you've put me on, Margot Robbie.

00:15:42
Speaker 1: Yes, he was. He played the Joker to her Harley quinident.

00:15:47
Speaker 2: Weird though, doesn't it feel like most people who play the Joker just they go through it like it's It almost is as if that role stays with folks.

00:15:58
Speaker 1: You gotta have some some darkness, because the whole role is to be dark with a smile in your face. I mean, I don't know Robes, you d I get what you're saying. You make a good point. He was in House of Gucci. You remember that one?

00:16:10
Speaker 2: Yes, Okay, Fight Club, that's got to be one of your favorites.

00:16:13
Speaker 1: Like, I don't remember. I haven't seen that movie in a long time.

00:16:15
Speaker 3: In a while, I don't remember him in that one Panic Room.

00:16:18
Speaker 1: I don't remember I saw that one.

00:16:19
Speaker 2: Yes, that's what Jodie Foster. I mean, Look, he is staring alongside some of the greatest Hollywood actors of all time. And yes, as an Oscar winner himself, he was in good company. But he was among the elite. Did you see Tron? Ares you like that stuff?

00:16:34
Speaker 1: You know? He led that movie it but didn't do great but still it was a big blockbuster. And but he was in the other one. I wanted to see the Summer still haven't seen. He plays skeletor Baby in The New Master of the Universe, and I wanted to go see it. We didn't.

00:16:50
Speaker 3: But yes, I didn't realize that's one of his most recent roles.

00:16:54
Speaker 1: Yes, but it fits you tell me he's playing Skeletor. I go, oh, yeah, that makes sense. He just has some kind of there's a dark beauty to him in some way. There's just there's He played the other Morbius, he played this vampire, this doctor who turned into a vampires. Still the same kinds of characters. But the dude's a hell of an actor. Where he does he go from here? What happens from here? Who knows? But right now they're a hell of an allegations against a really well known and a really well accomplished Hollywood actor.

00:17:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, and it will be interesting because not only is he a Hollywood actor, he's also a musician. He he actually is set to tour Europe and the UK next year with his thirty seconds to mars Band.

00:17:33
Speaker 3: I mean the road now, Yes, he's on tour right now.

00:17:36
Speaker 1: I didn't realize how serious of a musician he was.

00:17:39
Speaker 2: I didn't either, And now seeing that he's on tour while these allegations are going on, while this documentary comes out, I can't imagine what that's going to do to ticket sales to folks coming to see him perform.

00:17:52
Speaker 3: Who knows.

00:17:53
Speaker 2: In this weird world, it could it could create more interest. You never know, But obviously I think does he have to see anything more than that one sentence? Does he just move on.

00:18:05
Speaker 1: Deny it at all? And then what I mean is he still going to get work? I guess that's the only thing. If these can't face criminal charges, the risk now is to his career.

00:18:16
Speaker 2: That But I'm also wondering if someone behaves that way and operates that way, do they just stop. In twenty sixteen and for the last ten years, he hasn't behaved in that manner. He's changed his ways because I would think a documentary like this, it's out today, oftentimes you see more allegations and more women coming forward, and if any more women come forward within a from twenty seventeen on, we could be talking about criminal charges. Right.

00:18:42
Speaker 1: We say that all the time, and I assure you some of these women were encouraged and they came for it because they saw another woman do so. So Robes, That's how it goes. We might wake up tomorrow and we have another episode and we're here talking about Jared Leto again. But folks, we always appreciate you spending a little time with us. Just want to hop on and give you this pretty significant entertainment to update, but we appreciate you spending time with us on t J on behalf of my dear Emmy roll Park. We'll talk to
